Holiday Home Security Tips from Microtimes

2012-12-29T04:12:00.000-08:00

Holiday seasons are most tempting time for burglars to break into your house. Here are few security tips you can follow to make sure your home is safe.

When at home, make sure you always close all your curtains at night as burglars may be tempted by items on display
Its always good idea to install outdoor lighting, as darkness tempt burglars to operate
Think twice when you leave your spare key as it can be found by attentive burglars.
Cancel your newspaper and other subscriptions, if you are out for the long holiday.
Burglars may get the clue that you have expensive items inside your home if they find empty gift boxes from you new computer, DVD player or sound system on the street for garbage. Make sure you break down properly.
If possible, put timer switches on your TV and lights so it looks like you’re at home even when you’re out
When some repairperson knock to enter your home for essential maintenance & repairs always seek for proper identification.
Install a burglar alarm system and make sure it is installed as a visible for possible burglars
If your home has a gas fire be aware that carbon monoxide poisoning is a real risk
Don’t leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like, “You’ve reached the Adam’s…we’re away for the Christmas holiday…please leave a message.” Burglars love to hear that they have plenty of time to break in and completely ransack your home.

Chrome for iOS: Feature rich alternative to Mobile Safari

2012-11-10T10:29:00.000-08:00

Chrome on desktop is one of the arguably best browser on the market today. Lots of user prefer it for speed and simpler interface over other browser. Recently Google has also made made it available for iOS devices.

If you use Chrome in your PC, you are probably aware that you can sign in to chrome and save your history, bookmarks and other information. Now with chrome on iOS, you can sync it to iPhone and iPad too. All you need to do is sign into your Google account in chrome (in iOS device) and you get all the history, bookmarks and even the tabs ready to view. There are some incredible touch features which are really eye-feasting. Once you are sign into your chrome, you can scroll through the tab easily. Just click on the tab icon on top right corner of the window and you will get a stacked view of your tabs. You can then scroll through the tabs or swipe the tab away (right or left) to close it. You can also use 'edge swiping' to go through the different tab. Just swipe your finger from the edge of the screen while you are using chrome.

There is 'Request Desktop site' option which is really handy for viewing full desktop version of the site. Google has tried to bring most of the desktop features into its iOS counterpart. You can type url and search at the same time from the address bar (Omnibox, as Google calls it). You cannot do this in mobile safari. You can also use incognito mode for private browsing. There is also 'restore tab' if your app app crashes somehow. You can also search item on the browser using 'find on page' icon on the setting.

Unfortunately, as many tech blog has mentioned it is comparatively slower than the native browser safari. Due to some app restriction by apple, you cannot get the same speedy and simple chrome experiences as on other platforms. It is also not a default mail client, so if you open a link from your email you will be automatically directed to the safari. But these minor things may not be major issue for normal users. So if you prefer features over speed, Chrome is a nice alternative to safari.

Troubleshooting Winsock Error

2012-11-09T05:55:00.000-08:00

When you remove a malicious software or even spyware or adware, there is a chance your Winshock become corrupted. Winsock basically is a application that determines how two network programmes will communicate with each other. This may eventually lead to internet connection problem. Your device may show that its connected to the internet but may not be actually connected due to the Winsock error. In similar cases, you might try renewing your IP address, but if its about Winsock error, here's how you trouble shoot it.

1. First of all, you need to download following utility from the below link.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
2. Run the utility and click on "Fix" button.

3. Restart your PC
4. Right click on the network icon on the bottom-right corner of the window. Choose Open network connections.
5. Again right click the LAN connections (or Wireless Connection) and click properties.
6. Re-enter the details if necessary.
7. Now check the browser if the internet is working.
8. Best of Luck :)

What is Joomla and what you should know.

2012-11-05T03:27:00.001-08:00

Last month we discussed about different types of website including Content Management System, popularly known as CMS. Today we are going to go ahead and discuss about Joomla. Chances are you have already heard about this term, as this is an widely used CMS all over the world. Joomla is an open source content management system meaning it is completely FREE and is also extremely user friendly.

As you would expect from any CMS, Joomla lets you add, edit and remove content from the website from a password protected interface. It even lets you create multiple users so that more than one user can edit the content at the same time from any part of the world. The beauty of the product is that you don’t have to install any software on your local computer as long as the website has been already created. Login into your joomla administrator account is easy as well. All you need to do is, on your browser window, type your website domain followed by a forward slash and then administrator, and press enter.

You will get a login screen similar as below.

Type in you user name and password and click Log in button. You will be taken to the admin panel from where you can edit your website.

Once you get hang of the tools, you can easily add contents, change design layout and do many other things. The interface is user friendly and there is huge support base if you slip into some problems. The joy of this CMS is you hardly need any expertise in web designing. So, as long as you are familiar with basic computer knowledge, you can easily handle a website. As this is a CMS website, you will also save a lot on website maintenance that you have to pay for developer.

If you want to learn more about Joomla or you want to develop a website, We are ready to help you.
Just drop us a comment below or write to us on info@microtimes.co.uk. We would be really happy to help you.

Image To Text: Descent OCR App
OCR tools comes very handy when we are working with a lot of text that are saved as images. As with any other OCR tools, IMG to Text App is a free iOS app that converts image to text. I have used this app very frequently and I can say that it works incredibly well. I was working on a restaurant website when the client gave me their long menu pages. I was able to scan all the text without any hesitance. Off-course you may need to use inbuilt cropping tool on your iOS device for better results.

The conversion process is very simple. Simply take a picture of a document that you would like to extract the text from (or you can use the gallery instead), and e-mail the image to yourself, co-workers, friends. You will all receive not only the image but a text file that contains the editable text that is extracted from the image. You can also use Evernote instead of email to get your text which is handy if you are a user of Evernote. Just make sure the lighting is sufficient, there are no shadows, and that the image is well focused.

Are you choosing the right website?

2012-10-13T03:44:00.000-07:00

Choosing a website can be a tricky job. There are awful lots of ways to develop a website. It depends solely upon what type of business or needs you have. Sometimes web developers may persuade you to develop a website just because they are easier for them to develop or it may be more profitable for them. so, its very important to know about websites and their purpose.

Static websites

A static website is the simplest form of website, in which the site’s content is delivered without the use of server side processing. Static websites are used principally for brochure sites and can include complex graphics, animations and JavaScript driven features.
The main limitation of static websites is that they cannot provide complex user interactivity because they cannot either gather information from the user or serve content which is dependent on user actions. Large static sites are also time consuming to develop and more difficult to update because changes need to be implemented individually on each page of the site. However, if a business does not require a large website or advanced interactivity, a static site which is developed using XHTML and CSS will provide clean, compact coding and good search engine performance.

Dynamic websites

Dynamic websites rely on server side scripting to provided advanced interactivity and usually use a database to deliver the content for individual pages. A dynamic approach is appropriate for developing large websites with content which is formulaic, for example, catalogues, photograph albums and complex series of data. A dynamic website will be required to allow users to sort and search records, or to restrict access to parts of the website using a log-in procedure.
Generating website pages on the fly, using a database to store and deliver content, is an efficient way of managing a large site, with maintenance and updating generally much easier than for a comparable static site. The disadvantage of dynamic websites is that Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) techniques are more difficult to implement, particularly if the site’s SEO needs are not taken into account at the development stage.

Content managed websites
A content managed website is a further refinement of the database driven dynamic site. The content management system provides a password protected interface through which users can add, edit and remove content from the site. A content management system is particularly useful in the case of large sites which have numerous contributors, some of whom may be working from remote locations.

eCommerce websites
An eCommerce website is a dynamic website which has the functionality to process financial transactions. Most eCommerce websites are built to mimic a bricks and mortar store and use the model of stock pages, shopping basket system and checkout, using a secure online payment system. Many eCommerce sites also include a content management system, so that product details can be added or updated, and some include advanced features such as automated stock control.

Flash websites
Flash is proprietary software developed by Macromedia which is used to generate complex animations. The programme is sophisticated enough for entire websites to be constructed using Flash technology. Flash websites can be visually stunning and provide otherwise unachievable levels of user interactivity. However, it is almost impossible to carry out any meaningful form of SEO on a Flash site and so it should, generally, be avoided.
