NASCAR Review Of Tony Stewart At Pocono...

With Tony Stewart, driver of the #14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala, taking the checkered flag last year at the 2.5 mile track at Pocono Pa. It was Tony Stewart's 34th career Sprint Cup win, his first as Driver-Owner with Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) just after leaving Joe Gibbs Racing, where Tony Stewart spent his first 12 years as a NASCAR driver with the #20 Home Depot Chevrolet Impala.

Tony Stewart's first run at Pocono was held on the infield road course back in 1986, where at just 15 years old, Stewart raced a go-kart with the World Karting Association. Returning to Pocono with a 3,400 pound stock car back in June 1999 as a Rookie, with a 6th place finish to follow up with a4th place finish the following. Stewart took his first pole position at Pocono in July 2000. Tony's first win came in June 2003.

With Pocono Raceway being called the Tricky Triangle, with just 3 turns and the least degree of angles at the turns compared to the other tracks. Tony Stewart takes you through a lap at Pocono: “Turn one is probably the easiest of the three – you drive it in kind of deep and then try to float the car through the corner. You go down the backstretch and into the tunnel turn and it’s basically one lane. It’s flat and very line-sensitive. You’ve got to make sure you’re right on your marks every lap when you go through there. Then you’ve got a short chute into turn three. It’s a big, long corner and it too is very line-sensitive. Add the fact that we’ve got a straightaway that’s three-quarters of a mile long after that, and it’s very important that you get through the last corner well. You need to come off the corner quickly so that you’re not bogged down when you start down that long straightaway. Each corner has its challenges, and each one tends to present a different set of circumstances with each lap you make.”

NASCAR's Stewart-Haas Racing Team Takes Pole At The Coca-Cola 600...

Driver of the #39 U.S. Army Chevrolet Impala, Ryan Newman took the pole position for the Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Given that it is Memorial Weekend and Ryan Newman is driving the U.S. Army Chevrolet Impala, it seems that they fit together for this weekend. Making his 309th career Sprint Cup start at the Coca-Cola 600, Newman turned a lap of 28.793 seconds at 187.546 mph on the 1.5-mile oval to take the pole position.

Inaugural NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Junior Johnson is the only driver with as many pole positions as Ryan Newman, but only his first for 2010.

Newman stated “It was a great run for the U.S. Army Chevrolet,” with nine poles in his 19 career Sprint Cup races at Charlotte. It was a good run for us and we’ll see what we can do in the Coca-Cola 600.
“It was a great effort for everybody at Stewart-Haas Racing. It’s Memorial Day weekend and there is no better place for the U.S. Army Chevy to start.”

Co-owner Tony Stewart, driver of the #14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing, will start 26th after turning a lap of 29.296 seconds at 184.326 mph. Stewart was a little loose he held pole position five races ago at Texar Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. Stewart stated “We have all day Saturday to work on it some more, but you still have to build in a lot of adjustability since you start in the heat of the afternoon and then end at night. 600 miles is a long race.”

Of the forty-seven drivers who attempted to qualify for the Coca-Cola 600. Those not making the cut in the 43-car field were Reed Sorenson, Max Papis, David Stremme and Mike Bliss.

With Ryan Newman taking the pole-winning mark, it gave Chevrolet the top spot of all other manufacturers, which was the fourth pole for Stewart-Haas Racing team. Dodge came in second at the hands of Busch, while Toyota was the third-fastest with Truex. Kahne carried the flag for Ford.

The Coca-Cola 600 start at 6 p.m. with some sunlight and will finish under the lights, so track conditions will play a factor for the drivers and crew cheifs and the cars tires and tire presures.

Tony Stewart Comes Up With Another 9th Place Finish In NASCAR Autism Speaks 400 In Dover.

With another top 10 finish, 15th in his 23 career starts at Dover and only his 4th for this season. Tony Stewart driver of the #14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala has not made a top 10 finish since finishing second on March at Bristol (Tenn). At one point Tony Stewart came into the pits in third position, after a four tire change and raised the track bar an eighth of an inch, came back out onto the track in last place of the lead lap. On lap 224 Tony Stewart fell back to 16th place after his #14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala started to act erratically and in fear of being put a lap down. The #14 Office Depot/Old Spice was running was good on entry and exit and only slightly tight in the center of the corner. Crew chief Darian Grubb worked on the car throughout the next three pits stops by making small tire pressure and chassis adjustments. Just before the final 120 laps, a yellow flag (Caution) saved Tony Stewart from going a lap down. Crew chief Grubb brought the #14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet in to pit row to put the car’s setup back to how it had been at the start of the race. With that set-up, Tony Stewart was able to come up the ranks/positions from 15th to 9th. Stewart’s effort at Dover, he gained four spots in the Sprint Cup championship standings, to 14th place.

Teammate Ryan Newman, driver of the #39 U.S. Army Chevrolet Impala, finished 13th. Newman gained one position in the point standings. He’s now one spot ahead of Tony Stewart in 13th place.

NASCAR's Track To Tough To Tame...Darlington Raceway

With another great race on the books. Tony Stewart, driver of the #14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala, did not fare so well once again. From the start of the race, a cool night race, Stewart Chevrolet just could not get to the front, once again he kept falling back lap after lap. With the #14 Old Spice/Office Depot loose coming out of the corners, with wedge adjustments, air pressure and track bar adjustments. Tony Stewart just could not get his #14 to the front and all the changes to the car just made it handle harder on this type of track. The tough egg shape race track, the name says it all "The Track To Tough To Tame". Everyone had their share of the Darlington Raceway stripes, even Four-time Sprint Cup Champion, Jimmy Johnson, driver of the #48 Lowe's Chevrolet Impala was not given any leniency by giving Jimmy Johnson his share of Darlington stripes.

Then on lap 85, Stewart's third scheduled pit stop, Stewart missed his pit box due to clogged traffic on pit road and prevented Stewart to get a good angle into his pit box. The drive thru pit stop, did have one benefit as it put Stewart into the lead when the race restarted on lap 89. Stewart hung on at the restart for five laps before his tires became no match to the other cars with fresher tires. Stewart drops back slowly and maintained a top 10 presence up to lap 100. Having to pit for fuel and fresh tires just 22 laps later, it put Tony Stewart in 28th place. With his car handling to tight, it finally went to too loose on lap 201. The #14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala got his share of the Darlington Stripes, when Stewart spun off turn four. With the previous cosmetics done on a pit stop for scraping the wall earlier, it put Stewart back to the 23rd position and still on the lead lap, with the leaders coming up on him, it didn't take long for Tony Stewart to go down a lap. Stewart's point position also dropped back to 18th position.

Teammate Ryan Newman, driver of the #39 Haas Automation Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing, finished in ninth place. With four top 10 finishes in the last six races, positioning him up two spots to 14th in the championship standings.

To add to the ailing Stewart-Haas Racing team, Two-time Cup Series champion Tony Stewart is losing a sponsor at the end of the season. Old Spice will not renew its sponsorship with Stewart when its current deal expires at the end of the year. Old Spice is the primary sponsor for Stewart's #14 races this season. Office Depot will continue as a co-primary sponsor.

My Tony Stewart's NASCAR Review...

Another great night race. First of all, did Kyle Busch driver of the #18 Toyota Camary M&M have an awesome night or what. Kyle Busch's car was set up just right, whether it be running the high line or low line, his car was just running everyone down and passing them. Tony Stewart driver of the #14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala had different symptoms. Tony Stewart's #14 just kept dropping back lap after lap, his set up was just no where near of what the track requires. Tony came in with a different set up hoping it would work out for this track, but didn't. As for team mate Ryan Newman driver of the #39 Army Medicine Chevrolet Impala, his set up was good enough to get him up to the 9th spot just before the half-way mark of the 400 lap race. There wasn't to much mention of the #14 Office Depot/Old Spice Cheverolet Impala of Tony Stewart, who fell back a lap down by lap 85. When you have a bad set up or ride, there is no mention of how you are doing except for when they start falling back, a caution comes out or when the announcers do the "Driver by Driver" review. A caution flag on lap 155 allowed Tony Stewart to get on of his two down laps back. But constant problems with the #14 Office Depot Chevrolet put him down another lap, crew chief Darian Grubb made a strategy call to bring Stewart to pit road early under green flag conditions. A four-tire stop with a right-rear wedge adjustment on lap 350 put Stewart on the front end of the pit cycle, and if the race stayed green for the final 50 laps, he would gain considerable ground on those who had been running ahead of him.

Tony Stewart stated "We’re just not where we need to be right now,” who is now 15th in the championship standings with 1,160 points, a loss of one position. That puts him 307 markers behind new series leader Kevin Harvick. Teammate Ryan Newman, driver of the #39 Army Medicine Chevrolet, carried the Stewart/Haas Racing team by finishing eighth. With three top-10 finishes for the 2010 season, it allowed Newman to gain two positions in the point standings. He’s now 16th.

NASCAR's Tony Stewart Survived The Big Ones At Talladega

After a busy Talladega Superspeedway, with 8 cautions for 32 laps, 13 drivers out of the race and a garage full of damaged/wrecked cars. Tony Stewart's No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot "Mattahorn" Cheverolet came out strong in the begining laps, leading for just one lap of the 200 laps and was a part of a handful of charges to the front, with some help from Dale Earnhardt Jr pushing, helped put Tony Stewart to second place by lap 180. There were a lot of drafting and pushing from several opponents joining up together to push to the front and get some points for leading a lap.

With the Triple over time and Tony Stewart's No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot Cheverolet loosing momentum after every restart, those three restarts just kept putting him further back and having to fight his way back to the front, or at least close as possible. With Ryan Newman, teammate of Stewart-Haas Racing, driver of the No. 39 Haas Automation/Office Depot Chevrolet, getting involved in the second to last multi car accident, putting him to finished a disappointing 35th.

The finish was nothing to blink at or to get up and get a drink. While Kevin Harvick was pushing Jamie McMaurry for a couple of laps, then on turn-4 comes inside of McMaurry and finishes first with just .011 of a margin from McMaurry. Timing was everything for that to work out for Harvick.

Talladega Superspeedway saw 29 leaders and 88 lead changes, for an all-time NASCAR record. It was also the longest Talladega Superspeedway with 532 miles completed, which was extended 12 laps past the scheduled distance due to three attempts at a green-white-checker finish.

NASCAR's Stewart-Haas Racing Takes A Win At Phoenix...

Tony Stewart finally won another race this past weekend at Phoenix International Raceway, not as the driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet. But as the owner of Stewart/Haas Racing (SHR). Teammate Ryan Newman, the driver of the No. 39 Tornados Chevrolet Impala won his first race at the 1 mile oval, as part of Stewar/Haas Racing.

Tony Stewart finshed 23rd, falling even further back on the Sprint Cup Series points. The season started good for Stewart/Haas Racing, but it has deminished since then, Until now with the win at Phoenix International Raceway.

Taking a chance on a two tires pit stop, after a late caution, which extended the race to three more laps. Even after Jimmy Johnson and Kyle Busch leading the most laps. Newman took the lead from four-time Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon after Gordon spun his tires at the restart, and that's all she wrote.

This was Newman’s 14th career Sprint Cup victory and his first win since the 50th running of the Daytona 500 in 2008, which Newman won. That is a span of 77 races.

Tony Stewart drove his #14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet from 11th place to the lead by lap 23, but only held it for 15 laps around the desert mile. Track conditions changed and that took the air out of Stewart's sail. As night fell, the handling went away on Tony Stewarts' #14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet and left him with a 23rd place finish.

Newman held off the four-time Sprint Cup Champion Jeff Gordon for a .130 seconds to take the win, followed by Jimmi Johnson, Mark Martin and Juan Pablo Montoya. Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer and Joey Logano completed the 10.

With just 7 or 36 races completed, Stewart is ninth in the standings, down one spot. Newman moved up six position to 16th.

Next on schedule is the Samsung Mobile 500 to be held at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. Let's go Smoke 'em Tony.

We all knew that it was not going to take long for the NASCAR Association, are what ever title they give themselves, to change back to the rear spoiler. It was not just the wing that made the cars go airborne, look at the rear of the cars, high ends lets air get in there as well. The only good thing that NASCAR has came up with was the Roof Flaps and of course all the safety devices, especially the Haans device for the neck support.

We all are eager to see the new spoiler on the cars and how they will run on each track. But we all also await a good accident with no injuries of course. The bump and draft is back as well so when it comes to wide open racing the action will begin and the test of the new spoiler will be revealed as to how good it is. Every season, NASCAR officials and CEO's come up with some different rule for that season to see how it works on the tracks and how the drivers like them and will adhear to them. When they took the Bump and Draft away, no one could run up on anyone without making some kind of contact. Now is real racing, time put tighten up those straps, get your last drink before going out on the track and HOLD ON, because you are going for a ride.

The Fueds In NASCAR, When Will It End...

Where did it all start between Kyle Edwards driver of the #99 Aflac Ford Fusion and Brad Keselowski driver of #12 Mopar FLOTV Dodge Charger. Some say it started back at the Aarons 499 Talladega Super speedway when Brad Keselowski moved to the inside when Edwards went high to block him in the final 400 yards of the 188-lap race. Edwards slid back down the track in another attempt to block, but Keselowski already was inside his left-rear quarter panel. Contact between the cars turned Edwards and lifted his rear tires off the pavement. Edwards flew into the path of third-place finisher Ryan Newman’s Chevrolet, and that collision launched Edwards into the fence, Ryan Newman’s wrecked car crossed the finish line 3rd.
It appears that Edwards has crossed the line, and even seemed to realize it after the crash went wrong, during Edwards interview, he was brief in the comments he made to the media, he told NASCAR officials that he got into Keselowski on purpose, but he did not intend to send him flying on the frontstretch into the safety barrier wall on his roof, coming back on all four tires to the inside lane crossing back across traffic coming to rest against the safety barrier wall.
Even after Edwards being 150 laps down at the time of the incident and Keselowski was running a top-five finish.

The retaliation from the Talladega with Keselowski having turned Edwards and sent his car airborne and into the catchfence at Talladega Superspeedway last spring as they both raced for a win. The two drivers started to get together earlier during Sundays Atlanta race when they bumped each other on Lap 41 shoving Edwards into the #20 Home Depot Toyota of Joey Logano, sending both cars to the garage.
But Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition for NASCAR, said the governing body would take its time in examining all the facts before deciding what to do with Edwards, whose No. 99 Roush Fenway Ford was ordered to the garage after wrecking the No. 12 of Keselowski

Another Top-Ten Finish For Stewart...

Now that Tony Stewart had gotten his second top-10 finish with completing the Shelby American NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with a strong seventh place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Tony Stewart’s No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot racing for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) led twice for a total of 7 laps out of the 267 lap race, and that was the only time we heard about Tony Stewart at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Expecting for Tony to come out and take charge of a speedway. Tony stated “We ended up seventh, which is alright, but we always want more”. Considering a ninth finish last Sunday at Fontana, California. Tony Stewart struggled on the restarts and it took a couple of laps to get in with the lead pack.

Tony felt that the No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet Impala was tight in the center of the track’s corners and loose on exit, at times Stewart was at pace with the leader, if not faster. But was not able to catch the leader.

During the quick work of the Old Spice/Office Depot pit crew, with adjusting the chassis, a series of wedge, track bar and tire pressure adjustments, Tony was able to crack a top-five after 90 laps at the 1.5 mile oval. But Stewart was not able to hold a top-five, by lap 108 he fell back to seventh, a spot he would hold for much of the race. Stewart stayed out on two green flags when other teams had to make scheduled pit stops. Tony lead on laps 164-165 and laps 215-219 before he was called in to make his requisite pit stops.
Stewart was holding the fifth-place when a final caution came out on lap 230. Only 11 other drivers were on the lead lap and the call was made to come in for four tires and a splash of gas. Stewart came in on fifth place and came out of pit row, yep you guessed it, seventh for the final 33 laps of the race. But since Stewart having problems with restarts, at the final green flag to the finish, he struggled to get the Old Spice/Office Depot dropped back to ninth in just one lap. Stewart tried using the remainder of the laps to get back what he lost, to get back to at least seventh or a top-10 finish.

Stewart’s SHR teammate, Ryan Newman, finished 18th in his No. 39 Tornados Chevrolet.

Bad Start On NASCAR's First Race For Tony...

After completing the 52nd running of the Daytona 500, Tony finished 22nd. During the whole race Tony was fighting with a tight car, the #14 Office Depot/Old Spice team could not figure out what else they can do to make the car run better, but ran out of time, even with the extended 8 laps due to the yellow flags.

Having ran so good on the Nationwide Series with a win, finishing second at the Gatorade Duel and a 9th place at the Budweiser Shoot out. With all that going for Tony, he and his team just could not tune the #14 Office Depot/Old Spice car to run for a better position.
“It wasn’t very good for us,” said Stewart of his Daytona 500 outing. “We just missed. I’m not sure what we missed, but we’ll figure it out.”

The track did not cooperate any with a chunk of the asphalt came out on turn two, not once, but twice. Bringing out two red flags for a total about of 145 minutes. With all that time, Tony's crew still could not come up with the right decission to make the car handle better. Once the Daytona crews finished with making the patches at turn two, it was a sprint to the finish line. Everyone was runing wide open, sliding, bumping, and not getting loose.

Ryan Newam, Stewarts teammate, got caught up in a accident in lap 194. Newman's car was immobile after the accident, finishing in 34th place.

With 1 of 36 races completed,Tony leaves Daytona 23rd in the championship standings, just 93 points behind McMurray. Newman is 34th in points.

Race 2 of 36 will be held at Fontana Speedway, let's see if Tony has gotten his #14 Office Depot/Old Spice car tuned up for that race.

For the Third time Tony Stewart has won the season-opener of the Nationwide Series. Tony has dominated for the last three years. Tony Stewart drove the #4 Oreo/Ritz Chevrolet Impala for Kevin Harvick Inc., it's his fifth win in the last six years. Tony has fifteen overall victories at Daytona and nine career Nationwide Series win. Tony led for 38 laps of the 120 lap race. He was really loose at the beginning and it worked out to his favor working his way to the top 10.

Tony started the race in the 32nd position of 43. Working his way through positions between pit stops and yellows, the #4 crew finally tweeked the car just to where Tony liked it and was able to come up to the front and hold on to the lead. Tony really did not have any challangers for the lead position. There were a couple laps that came close for Tony to hold the lead, but no one was able to pass or come close to his rear bumper.

Tony was placed in an elite company with his 15th win at Daytona, he joins Cale Yarborough in third-place. Dale Earnhardt Sr., and Bobby Allison have won more races at Daytona than Stewart. Tony is happy with all those wins at Daytona, but he still has not won the main one at Daytona, the NASCAR Sprint Cup opener.

Kraft Set To Go Racing With Stewart-Haas Racing

Kraft has added another chapter to their illustrious motor sports career by joining Stewart-Haas Racing. Kraft Foods’ iconic Oreo cookie and Ritz cracker brands will be part of the Stewart-Haas Racing team, as the team’s official cookie and cracker. Tony Stewart will carry the Ritz branding on the upper chest of his uniform and on the B-post (The break between the Doors and the quarter window) of his No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala, teammate Ryan Newman will carry the Oreo branding on the upper chest of his uniform and also on the B-post of his No. 39 U.S. Army/Tornado/Haas Automation Chevrolet Impala.

Kraft Foods will continue to be an official NASCAR sponsor with Oreo keeping its role as the official cookie of NASCAR and Ritz will remain the official cracker of NASCAR.

In its inaugural year of operation in 2009, Stewart-Haas Racing showed that it was new in name only. Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman combined to win four races – five with the non-point NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway – along with two poles, 14 top-threes, 20 top-fives, 38 top-10s and a total of 628 laps led. They each earned a spot at the coveted berth of the elite Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, and after finishing the year sixth and ninth, respectively, they earned another distinction with the duo being tied for having completed the most laps of all Sprint Cup drivers, as they each finished 99.8 percent of the 10,492 laps available, missing only 24 laps.

Stewart Snares Ninth-Place Finish at Martinsville

Stewart hung on for a ninth-place finish in Sunday’s TUMS Fast Relief 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, a late-race caution diminished his chance for a top-five result.
The No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) earned his 22nd top-10 finish of the season and his 13th top-10 in 22 career Sprint Cup starts at Martinsville.
Crew chief Darian Grubb stated “It was definitely a survival day for us, “We were a lot better taking off on a run at the start of the race. We made the car better all day. About the middle of the race, we had the car really good, but had a bad pit stop that dropped us back in traffic. We had to make up for that and try a little strategy, but it ended up putting us back in the field. We were able to run up into the top-five from there, but late cautions didn’t play out for us. We struggled to hang on to a top-10 in the end.”
A sequence of events in the final 50 laps of the 501-lap race provided a view of the up-and-down day Stewart, Grubb and the entire No. 14 team endured.
After making what would turn out to be his final pit stop on lap 444, Stewart restarted the race in 11th-place on lap 448. From there, the two-time Sprint Cup champion picked off six drivers in front of him and was in fifth position by lap 466.
He fell back to sixth on lap 478 when his teammate, Ryan Newman, slipped past him, but with slightly more than 20 laps remaining, it appeared a top-five could still be in the cards for Stewart.
When the caution came out on lap 485, Stewart and Grubb knew immediately they had a tough decision to make – stay out and maintain the track position or pit for fresh tires. The duo decided to stay out, but unfortunately for them, every car behind them entered pit road, meaning every car behind the No. 14 would have the advantage of more grip and a faster racecar.
Stewart put up a valiant fight against the faster cars chasing him, and he was aided by a late caution from laps 496-499 that ended the race in a green-white-checkered finish.
“Everything didn’t fall precisely the way we needed it to,” Grubb said. “It wasn’t what we wanted. I think we had a good top-five car. We just needed to get the car up in track position and we just didn’t get it when it was all over with.”
Newman, driver of the No. 39 U.S. Army/Haas Chevrolet Impala SS, finished seventh to score his 15th top-10 finish of 2009 and his 8th in 16 career Sprint Cup starts at Martinsville.
The last time both Stewart/Haas cars finished in the top-10 came back in September at Dover (Del.) International Speedway when Stewart finished 9th and Newman placed 10th.
Denny Hamlin beat three-time and reigning Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson under caution to win the TUMS Fast Relief 500 and score his 7th career Sprint Cup victory, his 3rd of the season and his 2nd at Martinsville.
Non-American Florida native Juan Pablo Montoya finished 3rd, while Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon rounded out the top-five.
Both Stewart/Haas Racing drivers are represented in this year’s Chase for the Championship. Stewart protected his fourth in the standings, but is now 192 points behind Chase leader Jimmy Johnson. Newman gained one spot to seventh, 312 points out of first.
With only four races remaining before a champion is crowned following the season finale Nov. 22 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the top-12 drivers competing for the title rank as follows:

Stewart giving credit where credit is Due…

There’s no mistake about it. Tony Stewart said he was going to be partying hard following his Saturday night win in the Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Tony Stewart’s first victory in his own car gave him $1 million. Stewart passed Matt Kenseth with just two laps remaining and won the Sprint All-Star Race.
Stewart stated: “I don’t know if I’ll even be conscious [Sunday],” he said shortly after winning the race and the $1 million that came with it for the first time in his career. “We might set an over/under [bet] and see what time I actually wake up.”
Although this was the his first time winning the All-Star event, it’s not like Stewart has been a stranger to Victory Lane. He entered this season, his 11th in Cup racing, was 33 career victories.
All of those came in points races. And more significantly, all of those came while Stewart was driving a car owned by Joe Gibbs Racing. This was his first win as owner-driver.
Everyone has been surprised with how consistently competitive Stewart has been in his Office Depot No. 14 Chevrolet during the early portion of this season for Stewart-Haas Racing, including Stewart. He said so many times prior to Saturday’s win, when he passed Matt Kenseth’s No. 17 Ford with a lap and a half to go and sailed to a victory that perhaps means more than all the rest.
At the very least, it means more than most of the rest because he did it not only for himself but also for all the loyal employees who now call him boss and for the man who gave him half ownership and nearly complete control over it last year.
That would be Gene Haas, who was serving a prison sentence for a tax evasion conviction. Haas earned an early release just last week and on Saturday attended his first race since then, witnessing first-hand the magical transformation of his race organization that has taken place seemingly overnight under Stewart’s guidance.“There are guys on this team that haven’t been to Victory Lane before,” Stewart said. “That was something I was really looking forward to, getting there and congratulating Gene on his first win, and these guys that have been with the team and have not been in Victory Lane. To see those guys get their first win and be part of it with them was what I was really looking for.
“That means more than a million dollars does to me.“
For good reason, Haas has remained in the background as Stewart has transformed his operation. Stewart admitted that he was nervous when he discovered his mostly silent partner was going to attend Saturday’s All-Star race.
“I wanted him to be proud when he got here — proud of what we’ve done and proud of what he’s been such a huge part of putting together,” Stewart said. “Everybody has given us all the credit for this. But you really have got to give him the credit for taking the gamble and taking the risk to have us come and be a part of this organization, for trusting us to make some pretty big decisions and personnel changes.
“That’s not something that a lot of people in that position are willing to do, to give up control, to let a totally different group of guys come in and all of a sudden start changing things around. But Gene was willing to do that.”
Among the most obvious personnel changes were bringing Stewart and Ryan Newman on board as the two new drivers for the organization. There were many others, hiring of Darian Grubb away from Hendrick Motorsports to be Stewart’s crew chief.
For a while late Saturday night, it looked as if it would be Newman and not Stewart who was going to wheel the first Stewart-Haas car into Victory Lane. But Newman’s No. 39 Chevy got caught up in a three-wide sandwich that also included the No. 18 Toyota of Kyle Busch and the No. 24 Chevy of Jeff Gordon as they battled for the lead with eight laps to go. Newman faded at the end because of the damages his car suffered.
Meanwhile, Grubb kept making the right adjustments at the best of times to Stewart’s car and the No. 14 kept coming.
“Honestly, there wasn’t a corner of the car we didn’t touch,” Grubb said. “We took Tony’s feedback and made adjustments all around — a little bit of tire strategy, track bar, wedge, air pressure … about everything we could do.”
Stewart and Newman were very competitive through the season’s first 11 points races, but were hungering to get to Victory Lane. Doing it in front of Co-Owner Haas made it mean a little more for Stewart.
“He’s been following us every week and knows what the teams have been doing. He knows what happens every day at the race track,” Stewart said. “We just wanted to have a good night for him.”
It turned out to be the best night for the Stewart-Haas Racing team.

Watkins Glen

With race cars zooming down the long, fast frontstretch at the Glen International crest a rise at the start-finish line, and storm downhill toward Turn 1. While the laps add up, the track surface gets more and more slick. With so much of the car’s weight tipped toward the front, the rear tires lock up in a condition drivers call “axle hop.” The result, out-of-control slide past the first turn and into the paved runoff area, and a lost chance at victory if it occurs to the leader late in the race.
It happens to the best of them. In 2007, Jeff Gordon overran Turn 1 at Watkins Glen with two laps go, handing the final lap and win to Tony Stewart. Six years earlier, Dale Jarrett saw a two-second lead disappeared when his car missed the first turn and got stuck in the gravel trap that lurked outside the corner until it was removed in late 2005. On the entire 2.45-mile road course, there’s not a turn more difficult than that big, downhill right-hander that opens every lap.
“It’s tough to hit your marks lap after lap,” Kurt Busch said, “because you’re going downhill, and the car is right on that ragged edge of spinning out each time.”
And now, add the element of double-file restarts. The recent NASCAR rule change placing lead-lap cars beside each other on restarts has led to frantic, almost chaotic action at the end of some races. The rain-delayed event at Pocono Raceway on Monday, where cars banged four-wide after several drivers chose to stay out and pin the leaders back in the field, particularly stoked tempers and frayed nerves.
It also begs the question of what might happen in Sunday’s Cup event at Watkins Glen, where Turn 1 is tough enough for cars running by themselves — much less for multiple drivers cramming the front and leaning on one another for position.
“I think it’s going to be really intense here,” Gordon said.
Yet opinion among drivers is split on exactly how the double-file restarts may be on an already treacherous part of the race track. The removal of the gravel trap, which didn’t just cost cars position but often took them out of the race altogether, clearly increases the margin for error.
With the paved runoff area, Turn 1 is now easily wide enough to accommodate more than one vehicle. Unlike the other Cup road course, Infineon Raceway — where cars are almost forced into a single file — Watkins Glen is wide enough in many places to accommodate side-by-side racing.
“This track is very conducive to having double-file restarts and not getting people in trouble trying to get filed down to one lane,” Stewart said, a four-time winner at Watkins Glen. “So I think it should make it exciting for this weekend. I think this will be a perfect place for it.”
But even with all that room, drivers fighting for the same position can still tangle — as Gordon and Stewart learned in 2000, and Juan Montoya and Kevin Harvick discovered two years ago. Entering Turn 1, drivers don’t need any help. The pavement in that area is rippled from years of cars charging hard into the corner, Gordon said, and drivers rolling over it feel like they’re traversing bumps in the road. Watkins Glen is also a place where competitors have to be aggressive, driving deep into braking zones and trying to get every little bit they can. In Turn 1, some drivers don’t make it.
“Some guys will misjudge the braking and overshoot, and other guys will be more aggressive and take it three-wide and four-wide,” said Gordon, a four time winner. “There’s a lot of crazy stuff that happens down in Turn 1, and I guarantee that if you’re leading the race here this weekend, a caution is the last thing you want to see. I don’t know which lane is going to be the preferred lane either, inside or out, because even though it’s a right-hand turn and you think you would want the inside, if a guy can hold on your outside, then he can carry that momentum off the corner. There are a lot of factors that Turn 1 is going to play at this race this weekend.”
Whether double-file restarts will be one of those factors is yet to be seen, but the odds are good given the impact the rule change has had on recent events. The hairy nature of Monday’s race at Pocono has drivers at Watkins Glen preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best.
“As of late, the last few weeks … as we’re getting more comfortable, it seems as if there are more risks taken on double-file restarts toward the ends of these races,” Busch said. “Some guys, they decided they were going to stay out, they have old tires, they’re banking on the competition running into one another so it creates more yellows. It’s become disturbing, just watching these restarts. Everybody’s running into each other. A car that was good all day long can have trouble getting back through the pack and getting a top-five finish.”
Carl Edwards was equally as emphatic. “Last week was awful,” he said. “… I’m hoping this week, this race goes as it has in the past, [and] there won’t be too many restarts. Those double-file restarts seem to breed more restarts. It could end up being a one- or two-lap sprint race at the end, so that could have a huge impact. I hope it doesn’t, but it could, and we’re prepared for that. I’m prepared for that.”
