Who is stalked over and over,

Because that’s how the popular movies define persuasion…

Into a corporate lady,

Who fears to be aggressive for all the right reasons,

As she might be judged as "too bossy" for all the wrong ones…

Into a girl turning to a marriageable age,

And is supposed to leave her job,

Because that’s how she is supposed to be,

A care giver and not a bread earner…

No supernatural power will come for our rescue,

The supernatural is all within,

Recognizing that supernatural is the super power…

विश्वास के पानी से इसको तो घुल ही जाना है ,

हिच्कि का वैसे भी ये किस्सा पुराना है ,

रेलगाड़ी

अब वो बात नहीं रही …
वक़्त के बदलाव में,
जाने कब लोग भी बदल गए ,
इस बात की भनक भी ना लग पाई ,
और बातों की रेलगाड़ी ,
यादों के स्टेशन तक जा पहुँची ....
और अब जब दिल ने मचल कर ,
इस रेलगाड़ी की रफ़्तार थामने को,
इसकी चैन जो खींची है ,
तो ना जाने क्यों बातों में ,
अब वो बात ही नहीं रही …

आज सुबह जब घर से मै निकली ,

तो रास्ते में कई बार मुझे वो मिली …

कभी मेरे घर के सामने वाली झोपड़ी में ,

जानलेवा बीमारी से झुझती देह में …

तो कभी मेरे दफ्तर के बाहर,

घंटों मज़दूरी करती चंद थकी उम्मीदों में ....

कभी सड़कों के सिग्नलों पर भीख मांगती ,

भूखी - सहमी उन आँखों में …

तो कभी रेलवे स्टेशनों के प्लेटफार्म पर ,

सर्दी में ठिठुरती हुई कई मज़बूरियों में ....

कभी बज़ार की चाय की दुकान पर ,

काम करने वाले छोटू के सूने भविष्य में ....

तो कभी बाजू में टेलर की दुकान पर ,

काम करते सलीम चच्चा के बूढ़े कांपते हाथों में …

कभी मेरे गाँव के किसान की आत्महत्या का ,

मातम मानती उसके परिवार की आँसू भरी आँखों में ....

तो कभी बाल विवाह की जज़ीरों में फ़सी ,

मेरे उसी गाँव की बालिका वधु के बिखरे हुए अरमानो में ....

पूँछने पर अपना नाम तो उसने मुझे आज़ादी बताया,

पर ना जाने क्यों पिंजरे में वो मुझे कैद मिली ....

Girja's Eyes

Where ever we go, whatever we achieve, there is always a desire of going back “Home”.

“Home”: The dictionary defines it both as a place of origin as well as the ultimate goal.

But there she is “Girja” for whom only the first dictionary definition of home serves the purpose, because she is not among those who are going to decide her ultimate goal. And hence her ultimate end looks nowhere like home, not even a word near it.

I met Girja two years back, during my trip to “basti” a village in Uttarakhand.

A cool breeze swung through my face as I got out of the bus and it swiped away all the Delhi’s heat that had gotten me pack my bags and head to my massi’s place, Basti.

Basti, synonymous to its name is a gathering of a few families, who live together forming a bigger family. There I came across so many genuine smiles. People had innocent curiosity to know me , who I was as a person, where did I belong to, rather than just interacting to get one or the other work done.

Though the weather was all cold and windly, the people there had a warm and a huge heart. As a few days passed I was always seen among the people sitting at this age old and village’s only tea stall which belonged to Kaka. Kaka, who was a peculiar character, believed in old customs and rituals and was very adamant and tough, but the rest of him was soft.

This stall used to the gossip centre of whole of the basti. There we used to have several debates on the modern style of living, of which I was the only supporter, and the old traditional values.

One such day, while having the daily dose of tea, my eyes just met two very beautiful eyes from inside of kaka’s kitchen, though the glance was momentary, there was a particular gloominess about them. That day though I returned back home but my heart and mind was left in that kitchen only. The whole night I was waiting for the greyness of night to meet the crimson of dawn. And the moment that happened I went for a long walk, thinking about those eyes and there strange gloominess. And then finally with a lot of courage I knocked Kaka’s door. I was really sceptical that in such long discussions he never mentioned his girl who was almost the same age as I was. After knocking the door I prayed for the spite of God. The door opened, kaka after seeing me, rubbed his age old thick glasses and in his very own style, shouted I don’t think we open the shop this early, you may come latter. I explained that I didn’t come for tea, hearing this he shouted back then I don’t think I serve anything other than tea. Maintaining all my cool at the above and gathering all the courage I had from inside, I said “kaka I came here to meet the girl whom I saw last evening in your kitchen, he told she was his daughter and pointed to a small curtained corner of the house and shouted “Girja” “Girja”. A girl came out, very conscious and suspicious of my presence. It seemed as if I was the only person she had seen in months other than kaka. I was not able to understand why kaka was not able to look through his own daughter’s eyes and realise the pain she is trying to hide, that herculean task, she set for herself, but was unaware that, her own eyes were not supporting her in this task, because anyone other than kaka could make out that her heart is deeply grieved. May be kaka was also aware but was adamant enough on his own philosophy over his own daughter’s happiness. Realising that presence of kaka will not at all help me in getting to know the reason of Girja’s grief, I asked kaka, if could go on a walk with Girja. He exchanged his looks with Girja and then with me, and with a bit of reluctance he agreed.

As we went out I tried to be friendly and natural with her. I started with how much I liked the weather and the village and of course the people. She spoke very scarcely, but I kept on trying but it was of no use. Then, I asked her about her friends and the school and that was the point, I broke the wall she had surrounded around herself and she cried, she cried out hard. I held her close to myself and allowed all the grief to let go through crying. She started speaking, “all the things in my life just changed after Maa suffered a stroke and died 2 years ago, I was as close to Maa as I’m far off Baba. Maa used to be a very strong lady and with very high values. She used to fight with Baba, over my rights, my needs and my wishes.

My tenth class final exam were about to come, when she just left me all alone. Baba never supported the education of girls, he was worried about me going alone to Vidya peeth high school which was in kancha, a village next to basti.

I was not even able to come out of the grief of Maa’s death, that Baba, stopped my school, at that time I hardly had my senses and didn’t say a thing. And another week passed and I heard Baba, discussing at the Tea stall, about my marriage. I was just sixteen back then, and Baba decided on my marriage. Where as in school even Masterni- Sahibaa told that this age is to study to become something and I always wanted to be just like her teaching and educating the girls like us who belong to small villages. Even the slightest thought of marriage, started giving goose bumps all over my body. I was very scared, about Baba asking me, actually not asking, just ordering me to get married. I have been very scared of baba all through my life, I was unable to even talk to him properly, it always used to be Maa, who took care of my wishes, who even fought with baba for me. Rejecting on his decision of getting married this early, was just out of question for me to do.

And finally the day came, when he told me that a Man is going to come and see me the next day. I started shivering, he just went out to the tea stall, uttering that “whatever I’m doing is just for your own good”.

And the next day a Man aging around 40 came, I was just shocked that he will be the one, Baba told that he is a very rich Zamindaar. Latter I got to know that he had been married earlier and had two sons from the ex-wife. They decide for my marriage in the end of the year. I stopped thinking of my life as my own, just left the strings in the hands of the world and the society. And they got me married to a person even more than twice my age, and I like a dummy followed all the rituals. They say a girl after marriage leaves one home and decorates another, for me after Maa left me none of the homes served any purpose. And this new home, it was just impossible to manage, my husband and the sons had no attachment to me. I was just like a showpiece and a thing to shed off anger for my husband. He was a chronic drinker and it took his life within 6 months of our marriage and to my shock I had no grief, I was just relieved and came back to baba’s once again. Baba now feels guilty on his decision and blames himself for the worst that happened in my life. I had lost any interest in life.

Then one day I saw you sitting at the tea stall, sharing your views on the social issues which have been pertaining from ages in the small villages like ours. I just started admiring you, I saw you as a young independent girl talking very confidently among the bunch of males about her own views. And all my dreams just came back to my mind for a moment when, yesterday I came at the window to look at you. But my dreams can never be my reality.”

I dropped her back home assuring and we decided to talk to Kaka for starting on her education again, and I assured her that everything will be fine.

Thinking of her aggrieved eyes and the painful story, I thought of so many Girjas living in so many small villages in our country who are just doomed to embrace their destiny without their consent and my heart sank low for all of them,

पर जंजीर तले देख जिसे ना पाई कभी ...

And later we were able to convince Kaka to start on Girja’s education again.

Although this Girja somehow got another chance.

But being on the other side of wall, the question poses on all of us that how many such Girjas we would stand up to save? Sadly enough the question yet remains unanswered, although we call our self an independent Nation since 1947.

Women Role Models at Work

“Woman role model”, a question pops up in my mind along with this word, and the question is Who she actually is? Is she the celebrity we all watch on the big screen and get inspired by her beauty and charisma? Is she the one who has ridden at the top of the ladder in one of the fortune 500 companies? Is she the entrepreneur who has stood up alone to make a successful enterprise and who now stands out high in the crowd? Or Is she the one, who decides to stay back home building a family, who is a mother, who is the creator of a new person, a whole new life?

Well, I believe she resides in all of them. All of them in their own unique way is a role model, she has it all, that we may require to take an inspiration from and be a perfect human being.

But the bitter truth is our Society in general do not like originality, especially in woman, as it looks like defying man's authority for a woman to prefer her own methods to accepting those laid down for the majority.

Whether we believe it or not, it is more or less a male dominated world, we see it everywhere. Be it the glamorous film industry where she is believed to be a show material to be taken along the side of the main protagonist, “the hero”. Be it the corporate world where she is tagged to be fit for only limited jobs, even when she is equally educated and cable as a man is. She is believed to behave in a set way, for e.g. when a man is trying to push the things his way, he is considered assertive, at the same time for a woman it is marked as aggression. Be it the Open market where she is believed to be incompatible, as they say it is a harsh world outside, and while saying so they just forget to consider who made it harsh. Her being a woman is labelled irreconcilable for the in conduciveness created by others.

Marrianne Williamson once said ‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.’ We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? And hence there she is, fighting all odds, at the top notch positions in all kinds of professions. In the past few decades women have taken rapid strides in every field one could imagine. They have persevered in the roughest and most demanding of professions and achieved results which have surprised the whole world.

We have Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawal in the leading roles in the movie, “gulab gang”. We have Nishi Vasudeva recently appointed C&MD of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited. We have Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the famous entrepreneur and C&MD of Biocon Limited, a biotechnology company. And over and above all we have our mothers, the world cannot have a better role model. She inspires us, instils confidence in us, and then when we achieve she prefers sitting back home and giving all the credit of the success to us, despite the fact that we would not have been there in first place, had she not been there.

The world is full of such great success stories of woman role models, and I being the part of the corporate world from last two years, aspire to be one among them. When I joined Bharat Petroleum, I got posted in Operations, and during the initial days I felt as if the world had fallen on my head, my mind had all been primed up that such profile is not meant for me, and the reason being a silly one, I being a girl am not meant to be for a profile like that, and I kind of started hating my job, I felt kind of stuck in a bad place.

But soon I realised that when we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not yet ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. It is all in our hand to decide whether or not to accept our destiny, and I decided to accept it.

And soon I started seeing transformation in myself, I started evolving as a whole new person, who is fearless to take challenges, who is no more wrapped up inside a cocoon, who has now broken the doors of doubt created by her own stereotyped and primed mind.

Now I have realized; it is during the times I am far outside my element that I experience myself the most. That I see and feel who I really am, the most! I think that's what a comet is like, you see, a comet is born in the outer realms of the universe! But it's only when it ventures too close to our sun or to other stars that it releases the blazing "tail" behind it and shoots brazen through the heavens! And meteors become sucked into our atmosphere before they burst like firecrackers and realize that they're shooting stars! That's why I enjoy taking myself out of my own element, my own comfort zone, and hurling myself out into the unknown. Because it's during those scary moments, those unsure steps taken, that I am able to see that I'm like a comet hitting a new atmosphere: suddenly I illuminate magnificently and fire dusts begin to fall off of me! I discover a smile I didn't know I had, I uncover a feeling that I didn't know existed in me... I see myself.

And it all happened because I was there, in a situation, which I felt was not meant to be in first place. It happened only because the world is full of such woman role models, who not only brighten up their own lives, but in the process, that brightness falls all around on the people like us and we also aspire and work hard confidently with a hope of getting there one day.

ये दिल मासूम था,और मासूमियत में ही जीना चाहता है ....

मन के कोने में दबे कई जज़्बात

पर फिर लाचारियत में सिमट कर

मन के उसी कोने में फिर से वो दब जाते हैं ....

सच्चा है ये दिल,

सच ही कहना और सुन्ना चाहता है ....

मगर इतना आसान नही है सच का ये दामन ,

क्योकि सच सुनने की यहाँ किसी को आदत ही नहीं ....

इस असमंजस में फंसा ये दिल ,

बस एक बात भली भाँती जानता है ,

कि तेरा साथ हो तो ये हर परिस्थ्ति

में मुस्कुराना जानता है ....

गर्मियों की छुट्टियाँ

दो महीने की लम्बी छुट्टियाँ ,

दादी और नानी के घर पर बिताती ...

रात को दादी की राजा- रानी की कहानियों में ,

खुद को राजकुमारी मान कर ,

सुबह उठ कर, नानी के संग पूजा की थाली,

फूलों से सजाती और उन के भजनों,

के दो-चार शब्द जो समझ आते,

उन के साथ गुन-गुना कर बड़ी खुश हो जती ...

दादा के संग बजार घुमने जाती,

और पड़ोस के चाचा की दुकान पर बैठे,

लोगो को, राम- राम साहब कह के,

उन से चार टॉफ़ी पा कर ,
अपनी फ्हराक की छोटी-छोटी जेबॆए भर लाती ...

दोपहर को नाना के संग ताश खेलती,

और कागज के गुलाम- बादशाहों की

अनोखी दुनिया में खो कर,

नाना की गोदी के तकिये पर,

सर रख कर सो जाती ...

शाम को चाचा- चाची और मामा-मामी,

वाले दीदी-भईया के संग लुक्का-छुप्पी खेलती,

और सब को भाग- भाग कर पकड़ लेती ...

आज भी खेल तो वही लुक्का-छुप्पी का

चल रहा है, पर गर्मियों की वो छुट्टियाँ ,

खुद ही जाने कहाँ जा कर छुप गई हैं ...

कि मेरे खूब खोजने पर भी,

मुझे वो, मिल ही नहीं,पा रही हैं ...

ODE to the MEMORY LANE

I have a secret friend who lives with me all the time, who takes care, of all the times when I’m sad, of all the times when I feel lonely, of all the times when I’m fighting with a confluence with in my mind.

She sits back patiently taking me back to the times, when expressions flew genuinely, when people meant what they said and you didn’t have to get your mind all juggled up, deciphering the difference between what people said and what they meant.

And at all these times when mind is making a to and fro motion like a pendulum, this friend of mine comes at my rescue, taking me away from this to that world, from ultimate conflux to eternal peace. Even though the life has changed a lot here, still this friend of mine has preserved another life for me, there, in which I was an original version of myself, in which thoughts flew out swiftly and were received with acceptance and genuine criticism.

As the times have changed, life was taken its form, from its imaginary version to the real one, there appears to be a huge conflict between the two.But this friend of mine, presents me with the talking moments, where pure thoughts flew all over the place and I was very much the part of the process. And each talking moment, inspires me to still be the same, as I used to be, even if the world presents the things to be the other way around a lot of times.

Through this writing I want to thank this friend of mine, whose name is “memories” and every single one of my friends, who have made “memories”, the friend of mine so strong that today, it is keeping me strong and making me stronger as the days pass by.

घर से निकली तो थी,
मै दोस्तों कि तलाश में ,

पर इस तलाश में,
मैने बस एक साये को ही पाया है ...

एक साया जो दीखता तो, कही न कही है,

मुझ सा ही ,

पर न जाने क्यों,
मुझ से ही है अनजान

सा कही ...

एक साया जो हर पल,
है तो मेरे साथ ही ,

पर न जाने क्यों मुझ से ही है रूठा

सा कही ...

और मेरा ये मन आज भी,
इसी असमंजस में पड़ा है कि,

ये जो साया है, जो है तो मेरा ही,

जो समाया भी है,
मुझ में ही कही न कही ,

क्या मुझसे,ये रूबरू है भी, या नहीं ...

परछाई

ज़िन्दगी इस कदर बदल जाएगी,

कभी ऐसा मैने सोचा ना था ...

तुम्हारी परछाई ना जाने कब, मेरी अपनी

बन गई मुझे पता भी ना चला ...

और अब तुम्हारी इस परछाई

की छाव में इतनी दूर आ गई हू ,

कि तुम्हारे बिना ये ज़िन्दगी कैसी

हुआ करती थी , ये याद भी नहीं है मुझे ...

तुम्हारे पास ना होते हुए भी ,

तुम्हारा एहसास ही मेरा हमसफ़र

बन जाएगा ,

कभी ऐसा मैने सोचा ना था ...

और अब वक़्त के साथ ,

ये एहसास इतना गेहेरा गया है,

कि मेरा हर ज़िक्र तुम्हारे ज़िक्र,

के बिना अधूरा सा है ...

ज़िन्दगी इस कदर बदल जाएगी,

Drivers and cleaners standing on

the "LORRY"

with their belts on, they look

so "FUNNY"

asking me to check the

long hours and mundane work

घरोंदे की चिड़िया

घरोंदे से बहार निकली उस चिड़िया को,

ना जाने क्यों हर कोई, बस दबोचना ही चाहता है ...

वो पंख पसार के उड़ना चाहे,

तो ना जाने क्यों हर कोई, उसके पंखो को बस काटना ही चाहता है ...

वो आसमान की ऊचाइया छू कर भी, आज़ाद नहीं है ,

उसको ना जाने क्यों हर कोई, बस ये जताना ही चाहता है ...

एक माँ की ममता, एक बिटिया की चंचलता ...

एक बहिन की मुस्कुराहट, एक पत्नी का प्यार ...

सब कुछ भुला कर, जब सड़को पे बड़ी बेरहमी

से उसको घसीटा जाता है ,

उसके तन और मन के जर्जर होने के बाद,

जब उसको सब कुछ भुला देने को कहा जाता है,

तो ना जाने क्यों, इस संसार से मेरा ये मन

उकता सा जाता है ...

घरोंदे से बहार निकली उस चिड़िया को ,

ना जाने क्यों हर कोई बस दबोचना ही चाहता है ...

धूप सुनहरी

छुट्टी का वो दिन और जाड़े की वो दोपहर,

मेरे घर की छत और छत पर बैठी,

मै और मेरी प्यारी सी माँ…

माँ के कोमल आँचल में सिम्मट कर,

बड़ी सहजता से हर दुख को भुला देती,

और आंसू कब मुस्कराहट बन जाते,

पता भी ना चलता था…

हालाकी आज भी छुट्टी का वही दिन है,

वही जाड़े की दोपहर है…

पर माँ का वो कोमल आँचल,

कही दूर सा हो गया है,

भूली बिसरी यादों में कही

खो सा गया है…
