Midwest IT Survival / Longer the Project More the Need for Transparency

Mark W. Schumann -
This confidence can lead to senior management getting the impression the project is “under control” and move on to another project for increased scrutiny rather than assigning all kinds of ancillary people to dig into your project to figure out why they don’t have that “under control” feeling.
So true. All that scrutiny, when it is not needed, just skews your priorities and makes it MUCH harder to get the technical work done.

Midwest IT Survival / Senior Management Communication for the Technically Proficient Part 2

jfbauer - Scott, agree completely. I was trying to convey the notion that you need to think in the terms senior management does. I have to check myself because I still find my default approach is to dig into the details, sort out the relevant facts that support a particular decision/recommendation and then repeat those facts. In repeating, I fail to take into account that others didn't do the research and thus those facts don't resonate with them as they do me. I have to force myself to "relate" those facts to the goals and objectives of senior management. Hence, I have to force myself back to those 5 steps I've outlined to make sure my message, in story form, is digestible by my audience. It sure is hard sometimes to break out of the engineering mindset of facts and data and focus on structuring a message that resonates to senior management.

Midwest IT Survival / Senior Management Communication for the Technically Proficient Part 2

Scott Vercuski - Love the "Relate the facts" section. Sounds odd saying it but to me, this is almost better than straight facts. If senior management has a definite and material goal in mind and you develop something akin to what you've written, it makes it much more difficult for senior management to ignore. It's saying "I'm proposing something that YOU'VE made a goal, following YOUR plan, YOUR timeframe, YOUR budget restraints.". It seems much harder to ignore when it's got most (not everything, that .. I've found ... is almost impossible) of what you (as a member of senior management) are looking for. Defending a rejection of a well defined proposal becomes tougher I believe. If most of the goals of the project are accounted for (in a reasonable manner) in the proposal then senior (and executive) management would have a harder time rationalizing a rejection.

Midwest IT Survival / Senior Management Communication for the Technically Proficient Part 1

jfbauer - I wish there was a "google translate" for senior management indeed! I've always struggled with finding that balance between enough technical detail to be credible and convincing while not getting so detailed that the message gets muddied. In my current role I seem to be constantly putting together presentations to get consensus on technical direction/approach and thus my presentation skills are getting stress tested. I got some great feedback recently. I've turned that feedback into a "design spec" in my mind that makes the effort more structured. And you know what technical people tend to prefer: structure over chaos.
