Well Non-smoker 2, considering that most drugs are illegal in the state of Vermont, and that they are not allowed on the college campus there shouldn't be much to worry about, should there?

Also, if you have ever seen one of these drills, when public safety is checking rooms they typically peek in, ensure that no one is inside and leave. It's not like they are taking their sweet time trying to bust people. If you have things that are clear violations of college policy in your room, especially in plain site, then perhaps they should be taken away.

You may pay to stay in that room, but you also agree to follow the rules of Middlebury when you move in, so it's not like you didn't know that there is a possibility that someone may check your room. As Ms. Burchard pointed out in the link in her response, the policies for room entry are clearly spelled out in the handbook, and not reading them does not mean that they don't apply to you.

I write in response to the concerns raised in this blog string that Public Safety’s recent fire drills are actually a disguised effort at drug detection. Please be assured that this is not the case. The Department of Public Safety is required by the U.S. Department of Education to conduct fire drills twice a year, and these generally occur in the fall and in the spring. The timing of each specific fire drill exercise is influenced by consideration of the weather, the staffing needs, and the class/event schedules taking place within the residential space.

The unannounced fire drills are intended to simulate the conditions that would occur in an actual emergency and test the response capabilities of the residential community, including our staff and our students. During the fire drills, an officer must enter each student room in order to ensure that occupant(s) have left the building. Occasionally an officer will encounter issues that reflect safety violations, such as taped smoke detectors, tapestries covering ceilings, candles, occupants failing to leave the building or illegal substances. The officers will make sure everyone exits and will continue with the drill noting the location of the problem. Any follow up of these issues would be conducted in accordance with College policy and would not fall under the “emergency entry into room” that exists for the purpose of conducting a drill. For more information on entry to student rooms, please refer to the College Student Handbook: http://www.middlebury.edu/about/handbook/student_policies/residential#Entry.

Finally, the drills are not targeted at any individual or any particular residence hall; we conduct drills in all of the residence halls.

Public Safety appreciates the students’ cooperation with the fire drills. The department also shares with the student body the obligation to maintain a safe college community and a commitment to maintaining high safety standards.

I don't know how to say how amusing I find this blog post without sounding ironic. Just know that I wouldn't have responded if I thought it wasn't clever.

In self-defense, I would disagree that President Liebowitz's participation in my video as dirty campaigning. Though it was not run by Charlie in advance, it was all in good nature. Additionally, my opponent had full and equal opportunity to enlist the support of anyone he could, which he did (see his Ari Fleischer retweet).

What I was saying to the ex-Governor Douglas: "On campus, there are a too many fragmented efforts towards the same end, such as for student funding, and I'd like to see all of those integrated into a single, accessible place (hence the ball). If well done, this can be a strong asset to our community. This can be simply done with the participation of three major groups, the students, administration, and LIS. Boom. Easy."

A link to a photo of the wall you couldn't see, the "fourth wall" as it were: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=181961018592770&set=a.175459199242952.35024.174686812653524&type=1&theater

And finally, please note that despite the color and fun of my campaign, I am truly serious about the issues and action:

I assume you intended it to be a joke, but it rings of the same entitlement that we are trying to protest.

I have spoken with my Middkid about this subject before and will bring it up once again. I would like Virginia to know that we appreciate the tasks that you and your coworkers have to accomplish each day. We appreciate you looking out for our Middkid by providing them with a less instutionalized dining experience. Some do not realize how good they really have it.

This is simply unbelievable. The entitlement of the students to act this way, or perhaps the dated way in which the dining system feeds Middlebury students, or some of each, needs some hard and fast reality checks.

Is there any student leadership around this issue? Will the College need to move to recyclable paper plates, without any real dishware, to make a point to students? Is there no peer pressure to act properly?

I find this so hard to believe --- 1300 lbs of dirty dishes dumped in the recylcing bins since spring break. Again, simply unbelievable and so incredibly disappointing.

Nathan,

You were very correct about everything in the blog, except: the sign read "these racks were full when you came back from spring break"

This is because over our spring break coworkers and I went to recycling and the dorms and recovered over 1,300 pounds of dirty dishes.

Yesterday Wayne our delivery driver went and got all the dirty dorm dishes at recycling. Today, 24 hours later, I went and got another trunk full of dishes.

Something's got to change.

Sorry, it is a bit ambiguous. $3.17 is the amount that our dining staff is allotted per student, per day to feed us. I'm not making a comment about their earnings but rather their thoughtfulness and resourcefulness in managing to give us all we can ask for and more, three times a day, at such a low cost. It takes some creativity and cleverness that I think is underappreciated. Hope this clears things up!
