<img class="caption" title="Andrew “Ted” Beck ran about 70 miles to Cape May County earlier this month. A long run for Boston U student Attempt made to run 100 miles in South Jersey By ALEX DAVIS Staff Writer AVALON — Andrew “Ted” Beck planned to run 100 miles to Avalon from Camden County earlier this month. He had bicycled to the shore before. His plan didn’t work out. On his journey, he injured his leg. He made it as far as Woodbine Road, off Route 49. “Even now, I still don't feel like I'm fully recovered,” Beck said. “My IT [Iliotibial band] and hamstring tendon are still tight and it gives me some discomfort to walk.” The Boston University student said he is pleased with his trip but not satisfied. In a few years, Beck said he wants to try again. He’s familiar with the area. Beck said he has been vacationing in Cape May County since he was a toddler. His friend has a beach house in Avalon. On June 8, Beck set his sights on running from Cherry Hill to a friend’s beach house in Avalon, first going to Cooper River in Camden County. Around 55 miles into his trip on June 8, his hamstring became inflamed and hot, but he tried to tough it out. At mile 62, he could hardly lift his leg, dragging his foot for miles, Beck said. He ended his journey at 67 miles, about 15 miles from the shore, he said. Beck ended the run at 11 hours and 40 minutes. Beck had planned to do 100 miles. If not for the side trip to Cooper River in Camden County, he said he probably would have arrived in Avalon after all. “Everyone was really supportive,” he said. To prepare for his journey, he went on rigorous training program. “When I began my training plan, I decided to keep a log of all my workouts to record how the workout went, any injuries or pains I was feeling, and to reflect on my perspective of the day,” Beck said. “I also had the goal of trying to figure out why exactly I wanted to do this — dedicate five months to something that was relatively new to me. And on my last journal entry before the event, I realized I hadn't figured it out. It wasn't that I forgot to think about it — I thought about it almost every day. But, it seems that five months of thinking might not be enough.” Beck said his friends followed him on his trip. “I’m pretty appreciative of what they did,” he said. Even though he didn’t meet his goal on running to Avalon, he said he learned some things. He said that he realizes that he can tackle anything. “I see the value in being in situations where I have to overcome something; where there really is no easy way out,” he said. “It reveals the characteristics that I never knew I had to the man I see in the mirror. I try to impress him every day. I suppose that's why I did it: to see if I could impress myself. Have I? I'm still thinking.” Beck is a mechanical engineering student at Boston University. The 21-year-old will be a senior next school year. He said he aspires to be a filmmaker. He said he has not done any previous long-distance running. Beck plans to get back into rowing at Boston University." alt="Andrew “Ted” Beck ran about 70 miles to Cape May County earlier this month.

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — Area firefighters on June 12 watched as water with a chemical additive was sprayed on a deliberately set fire at the Cape May Court House fire house. The flames were quickly extinguished.

The additive, called Pyrocap B-136, is said to create a safer environment for firefighters and trapped victims, using less water and causing less damage.

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – Township officials have had a change of heart in regard to a sound barrier along the Garden State Parkway, near where traffic lights will be removed.

In September, Middle Township officials recommended that sound barriers not be installed as part of a major Garden State Parkway in Middle Township.

At that time, Mayor Dan Lockwood said sounds barrier weren’t “necessarily a positive part of the project.”

Now, township officials are encouraging the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to reduce noise and to have a barrier put south of Mechanic Street going south to Bennett Road.
