DENNIS TOWNSHIP – The public is invited to take part in free sessions that aim to protect area residents from being financially exploited after a natural disaster, Wednesday, April 22, at the Senior Center, 571 Petersburg Road.

Sessions will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. and will help residents learn how to recognize potentially unscrupulous contractors, as well as a reputable professional.

Work begins to replace Peermont substation

AVALON – Work has begun in the planned replacement of the Peermont substation at 271 61st St. as part of a plan by Atlantic City Electric to upgrade and update the power grid’s infrastructure.

Construction at the site is expected to continue throughout the spring, but is slated to be suspended May 21, prior to the Labor Day weekend. Work will not begin again after the Memorial Day weekend.

Sports, activities slated for area youth in Avalon

AVALON – Area youth are invited to take part in a variety of sports and activities camps offered this year by the borough’s Department of Recreation.

The camps run from early June until Labor Day weekend and include sports and activities programs for all ages.

“Avalon continues to offer the very best selection of sports and activities programs for residents and visitors each and every summer,” said Chuck McDonnell, director of the Department of Recreation.

College fair planned at Middle Township High School

Avalon sets annual Easter egg hunt on athletic fields

AVALON - The public is invited to the borough’s annual Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 4, at the athletic fields between 8th and 12th streets along Ocean and Dune drives.

Children 1 to 4 years old are expected to gather at the 8th Street field; ages 5 to 6 will gather at the 10th Street field; ages 7 to 10 years will gather at the 12th Street field.

One charged in stabbing at Whispering Woods

At 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, the Middle Township Police Department responded to the Green Creek area for a report of a man trespassing through yards.

Sgt. Clint Stocker stopped Larry Crocker, 23 of Green Creek, on Route 47, according to a police report.

There figures to be a lot of parity in area high school softball this season.

The two best teams in the area – Middle Township and Wildwood Catholic – will both still be competitive but have some holes to fill due to graduation losses. Meanwhile, Cape May Tech, Lower Cape May and Wildwood all seem to have a chance to be better than they were last season.

It may seem hard to believe, the way the weather has been around here, but most of the area high school baseball teams are scheduled to begin their regular seasons next week.

Middle Township and Wildwood figure to be the area’s best teams, as both teams bring back some excellent players from last year and feature deep pitching staffs. Cape May Tech, Lower Cape May and Wildwood Catholic will be rebuilding, the latter two under new head coaches.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The public is invited to the annual free Cape May County Park and Zoo Easter Egg Hunt from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, March 28 at the zoo, 707 Route 9 North.

The egg hunt starts at 10 a.m., and the Easter Bunny will pose for pictures with children after the hunt.

Also planned are family activities that include educational displays, crafts and live animal encounters.

Public invited to dance marathon to support county and Haitian ministry

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The public is invited to join Our Lady of the Angels at a “Dance Storm” dance marathon from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, May 16, at Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School, as a fundraiser to benefit youth groups and parish outreach projects in Cape May County and Haiti.

According to a statement from the church, the social justice group at Our Lady of the Angels recently launched its newest Haiti project: a fresh water fish farm to provide a good source of protein to improve the diets and health of poor families.

LCM, Middle excited for lacrosse season

The four area high school boys and girls lacrosse programs each posted winning seasons last spring. The Middle Township girls were the best of the lot, enjoying an undefeated league season and a Cape-Atlantic League championship. The Middle boys won 16 games, the Lower Cape May boys were over .500 and qualified for the state playoffs for the first time and the Lower girls had a more-than-respectable 12-win season.

All four teams have a good chance for more success this spring.

In fact, Lower Cape May’s teams have already experienced some success. Both posted victories over Atlantic City in their season openers on Wednesday, the boys winning 16-0 behind four goals from Pete Tomlin and the girls victorious by 14-1 behind six goals from Ashley Hunt.
