MIDDLETOWNSHIP – The Board of Education is confident that many or all part-time teacher aides and bus attendants would remain employees of the MiddleTownshipSchool District, depending on contract negotiations, said Superintendent Michael Kopakowski.

People have asked the Board of Education to reconsider the privatization proposal where 62 people would lose their jobs.

Environmental Commission tackling ‘green’ projects

MIDDLETOWNSHIP – The Environmental Commission is looking to make MiddleTownship greener.

Members want the township to maintain parks, gardens and landscape areas with an eye toward low-maintenance planting, conserving conservation, reducing surface water runoff and using recycled and compost materials. Township Committee is expected to vote on a policy soon.

Middle Township

Parade starts at 10 a.m. The route runs from Memorial Field on Pacific Avenue, to north on Boyd Street, to Mechanic Street and then left onto Dias Creek Road, finishing at the American Legion Hall on the corner of Hand Avenue and Dias Creek Road. Memorial Day Service begins at about 11 a.m. Free hogs and soda will be served. There will also be a bicycle-decorating contest for children up to 12 years old. Lineup for the parade is 9:15 a.m. To participate in the parade, call the Middle Township Recreation Department at 465-8743.

Ocean City

Memorial Day Service 11 a.m. at the Wall of Honor at Veterans Memorial Park, Fifth and Wesley avenues, Ocean City. Information and plaques on the wall will be updated. There will be speakers, special guests and a wreath presentation. Ocean City lifeguards will set adrift a wreath at sea 9:15 a.m. at the south side of the Music Pier to honor those who have given their lives for our country.

Sea Isle City

Stone Harbor

Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade noon at 96th Street to the beach. During the parade, officials will officially unveil an artifact recovered from the site of the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. Two white horses and bagpipe music will escort the artifact. The parade will proceed east towards the Women’s Civic Club at 96th Street and the beach, where a ceremony will be held. The ceremony will feature comments from Mayor Suzanne Walters and the American Legion. Both a rifle salute will take place and “Taps" will be played. The Stone Harbor Beach Patrol will accept bouquets donated by local organizations and place them at sea. The U.S. Coast Guard will conduct a helicopter flyover at 1 p.m. After the parade, American Legion Post No. 331 will hold its annual open house, at 117th Street and Second Avenue. Atzert has a life-long love of the outdoors

MIDDLETOWNSHIP – Steve Atzert of Cape May Court House spent a lot of his childhood playing in the woods.

So it wasn’t all that unusual for biology to be one of his top interests in high school.

For more than 40 years, he worked in the environmental field. The 67-year-old spent a decade as manager of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge.

Community service makes a comeback with adults on probation

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – Years ago, juveniles who got in trouble with police put in community service hours with the Middle Township Police Department.

They cleaned emergency vehicles and picked up trash from Memorial Field in Cape May Court House. The program ended in the early- to mid-1990s.

In early March, a community service program made a return to the police department but in a different form. The program is for adults who need to put in community service hours.

“They [people on probation] give back to the community by doing this. Basically, it’s a free labor source for us to tap into,” said Patrolman James D’Alonzo, who heads the department’s community service program, and is in his 12th year on the Middle Township Police Department.
