Attempt made to run 100 miles in South Jersey

AVALON — Andrew “Ted” Beck planned to run 100 miles to Avalon from Camden County earlier this month. He had bicycled to the shore before.

His plan didn’t work out. On his journey, he injured his leg. He made it as far as Woodbine Road, off Route 49.

Firefighters get a demonstration of new additive

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — Area firefighters on June 12 watched as water with a chemical additive was sprayed on a deliberately set fire at the Cape May Court House fire house. The flames were quickly extinguished.

The additive, called Pyrocap B-136, is said to create a safer environment for firefighters and trapped victims, using less water and causing less damage.

Middle wants a sound barrier for Parkway work

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – Township officials have had a change of heart in regard to a sound barrier along the Garden State Parkway, near where traffic lights will be removed.

In September, Middle Township officials recommended that sound barriers not be installed as part of a major Garden State Parkway in Middle Township.

At that time, Mayor Dan Lockwood said sounds barrier weren’t “necessarily a positive part of the project.”

Now, township officials are encouraging the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to reduce noise and to have a barrier put south of Mechanic Street going south to Bennett Road.

County museum works on expansion

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — The Cape May County Museum is continuing to expand into an 18th century barn along Route 9 in Middle Township.

Military artifacts and uniforms dating back to the Spanish-American War are planned for display. Already in the barn are Native American artifacts, including arrowheads; an 1800s lens from the Cape May Lighthouse; decoys; and whaling objects.

Child pornography charges filed

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP - Police have charged a 44-year-old Middle Township man with possession and distribution of child pornography.

On June 5, Middle Township Police Department Major Crimes Unit along with the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office executed a search warrant at Presidential Trailer Park in Mayville.

New name for Stone Harbor group

STONE HARBOR — People used to think the Stone Harbor Realty Owners Association was an organization of real estate agents.

That was far from the association’s purpose, so this month members changed the name.

Flag Day celebrated in Stone Harbor

An American flag is being inspected by Ted Ramsey, first vice commander of the Stephen C. Ludlam Post 331 of the American Legion. On Friday, the American Legion, serving Avalon and Stone Harbor, conducted a Flag Day ceremony and installation of new officers of the American Legion Post and its American Legion Auxiliary Unit.

Ground broken on another Habitat home in Middle Township

WHITESBORO — As Amelia English and her family posed for a picture along Sumner Street here on Saturday, a worker in a backhoe behind them was clearing brush and trees.

Later this year, the Cape May Court House woman and her three children will move into a Habitat for Humanity home that will be built on that property in Whitesboro.

Work to begin on another Habitat home in July

Ground was broken on another Habitat for Humanity home in Whitesboro on Saturday morning. Amelia English and her three children will help build the house on Sumner Street. Work is expected to get underway July 13, with completion later this year. The project is being supported by a $62,935 grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, which is a faith-based not-for-profit financial organization.
