Marine Debris Cleanup: Bill Zentner removing trash from the South Bridget Cove during the International Coastal Cleanup Day. Many good community citizens helped get rid Juneau beaches along the road system of trash left by irresponsible people. Besides the usual assortment of cups, bottles and cans, items like discarded gloves, tires and even a plastic chair had to be removed.

Forest Bounty

The late summer - early fall forests of Southeast Alaska are bursting with delectables - abundant salmon in clear chilly streams and bushes heavy with blueberry and salmonberry. The less appreciated forest bounty is a great variety of delicious mushrooms scattered around our forests. The true 'shroom hunters come to the same mushroom patches year after year, whose locations are highly guarded and very rarely shared. One of them, Nicola Hillgruber, has been coming to a certain area abound with chanterelles for years. Sauteed with onion and a pinch of minced garlic, and thrown on pasta or eaten with boiled or fried potatoes, chanterelle mushrooms are one of the best additions to a fall dinner plate.
