This was also my first outing using my new Nikon D800. I’m really impressed how it handled and I can’t wait to shoot more with it. Let me know how you like Dumbo’s Flight!

The next car on the list of my car photography project is a white Audi TT-RS owned by Matt Welch. This Audi is super fast, coming in with a listed 0-60mph time of 4.1 seconds (per the Audi USA website at the time of posting). With the European dual clutch manual transmission option, and the right driver, I hear this baby will easily get sub-4 second times. This car has a nice turbo sound, and with the all wheel drive, it handles extremely well. Matt is also a part of the DFW Audi Club, and he invited his buddy Shane along, who happens to have a black Audi TT-RS. So we were fortunate to get a pair of sweet looking cars to shoot together.

Lessons Learned from the shoot: Always check your settings before you take a photo. I realized half way through the shoot that I was at ISO1000, and with semi-clear skies and a bright sun, I definitely didn’t need to be. So before any shoot, take a look at each setting to make sure it is where you need it to be set.

My good friend Meredith (follow her on Twitter) came to me earlier this year wanting headshots for a project she was putting together. She wanted something more contemporary than other portraits she’s had done in the past so we met up by the new AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas for some modern backgrounds. Since clouds were scarce that day, we spent time trying to find some trees to diffuse the harsh light. As we were walking around, I saw a reflection of Wyly Theatre from the glass windows of the Opera House and it turned out to be a great concept for a portrait. We also had a good laugh while taking this photo because all of the workers inside of the Opera House were staring at us thinking “Who is this celebrity?” Ok, maybe that wasn’t exactly what they were thinking, but it was funny nonetheless. For the second round of my car photography adventure, I was able to shoot a special edition black BMW Frozen M3 owned by Philip de Bruyn. For those of you not into cars, or BMW’s, the Frozen series features a matte/satin paint scheme, red accent stitching, black GTS wheels, and red brake calipers. There were only 20 of the black Frozen M3′s produced! Needless to say, I felt extremely lucky to be shooting such a rare specimen.

As far as shooting conditions go, there were very few clouds which led to some harsh sunlight at times. As the evening progressed, and the sun was setting, the color turned more golden and really accented the car. I was curious to see how this matte finish would perform with reflections and overall lighting. I was amazed to see how much light it could take. There were a couple of accent pieces in the interior and engine bay that Philip wanted me to take a look at, which turned out really nice. The shot above was the only HDR photo I did in this session, but I think it is my favorite from the set. Please enjoy my set of photos from the BMW Black Frozen M3 photoshoot.

My friend and fellow photographer Thorpe Griner and I decided at the beginning of this year to start a portfolio-building project focused around car photography. I have some connections to people in the DFW Auto Club, so we asked owners if they would have any interest in getting their cars photographed. We were very pleased with the responses, and were excited to see where this could take us. For each shoot, we decided to divide the time and switch roles between shooting and assisting. This plan would allow for one of us to shoot in the twilight hour and the other would shoot at night. By using this approach, we not only are able to provide each owner with a different photographic style, but also a different setting/background. Please enjoy this and upcoming posts on our car photography adventure!

First up is a super stylish black Porsche 911 owned by Mike Blase (huge thanks!). I think our jaws dropped to the ground when we saw (and heard) this beast pull up. I hesitate to call this car gorgeous because I don’t want to emasculate it in any way. If I saw this 911 in my rear view mirror, I’d get out of the way (you’ve been warned)! We had storms leading up to the shoot so we found a parking garage to keep us dry. The garage was so dirty and damp from the storms that I thought the setting screamed for a grungy High Dynamic Range (HDR) feel. I haven’t done much in the way of HDR in my photography, but it’s something I’ve always been interested in trying, so why not now! I shot in 3-exposure (+/- 2 stops) bursts and used Photomatix as my main HDR processing tool. I was really pleased with how these turned out and thought it gave the Porsche 911 some added attitude – as if it didn’t have enough already! Riley and James were along for the ride during Nick and Maggie’s shoot. They also brought Piper along to play with Samson when he wasn’t in the frame. So of course I had them pose a couple times while I wasn’t shooting Nick and Maggie. A very cute couple with a quite ADHD dog. Throwing leaves up in the air while holding a treat in my hand (not easy) was about the only thing that would get Piper to look at the camera. Enjoy!

I had the privilege of shooting a fall/holiday session for two of my best friends this past weekend. Nick and Maggie didn’t have to force smiles or poses at any point in the shoot. Even when I wasn’t shooting, the two of them were still smiling and laughing together. And then there was Samson… This pup has so much energy that he would jump up on benches or walls to follow me as I was shooting. He was actually very well behaved and did a great job at sitting for the shots. He also has one of the biggest smiles I’ve ever seen! We all had a lot of fun that afternoon.

I made a comment on my twitter this week that while editing these photos I had a big smile on my face the entire time. I could feel the emotion of this couple that I saw in person through my own photos, and I hope you can get a sense of what I’m talking about.

Once Mister Heavenly was announced to play 35 Conferette, I new this would be one of the most crowded performances of the weekend since the actor Michael Cera would be playing along on bass guitar. Fighting the crowd in the photo pit was well worth it to get close shots of the actor, but it was also great because I really enjoyed their music. One of my favorite shows at 35 Conferette 2011 was Telegraph Canyon. I love their folk sound and have since seen them again at a free show in Fort Worth. As you can see in photos, I had to really pay attention to the exposure as the daylight disappeared and I had to rely only on stage lighting. When lighting drastically changes like this be sure to keep checking your settings so you don’t end up with a ton of underexposed shots. I recommend you pick up their album on Amazon so you have some music to listen to while your out taking your next set of photos!
