What kind of camera do I need before I can take good pictures?

Just get started!
Many beginning photographer's fall into the trap of thinking they need a professional camera before they can make good pictures.
They wait to work on their photographic skills until they have a camera which they feel is big enough to satisfy their not-yet-known needs and therefore delay any steps they might take towards improvement.
Although a professional quality camera is important if you want more control, you can still practice your basic skills and composition on a cheaper camera.

Point and shoots.

With the continual advance in technology, more and more "pocket cameras" are becoming sufficient for learning on. Most cameras now have control over the exposure and color of a photo. As a result, one can teach himself all the way up to intermediate level by only using their "point and shoot." If you already have a camera, then chances are, you can use it for your first learning steps.

When to advance to an SLR

When you have the basics down and know how to make good pictures with a point and shoot, then you are ready to move on to a more professional camera.

What do I mean by "point and shoot?"

Point and shoot is the name given to any compact camera that doesn't have a removable lens(see the post on SLR's)

Modern point and shoots can have the same amount of control as a professional DSLR.

Point and shoots are mostly automatic, but they usually can be controlled much like any DSLR.

I'm starting a series meant to pull beginning photographers out of the "point and shoot pit."

When I first started photography, I had no clue where to start.
I had no clue about the terminology or official names of equipment and procedures.

What I am intending to do is take what I learned the hard way, and give it to you the easy way!

Along the way I'll be giving reference to videos and sites that really helped me, as well as just basic tips and pointers that helped me get out of my "point and shoot" mode and into true DSLR photography.

Seeing I have nothing else to write about I thought I'd write about my macro lens hack.

All I did was flip my 18-55mm lens around (using a pringles can and a body cover) cut a hole in the back cover, stuck a skylight filter on the back of it and voila! I had an extreme macro lens

The spider has been living in my bedroom for a few weeks now and is a lot smaller than the picture makes him look.
