Auto Show moves Across America

Watch as the Motor Trend Auto Show moves across the United States. Keep an eye on your local newspapers, radio and TV for announcements of dates. And don't fail to catch one of these shows. Not only the concept cars are great, but I think you will find that many of the current models are going to turn your head. And I don't mean the girl models! They always turn the head!!

J Mays said in our November 2011 issue that the production 2013 Ford Fusion unveiled at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit would borrow heavily from the Evos concept revealed at Frankfurt last fall. As on the Evos, the large, expressive six-point lower fascia from the Focus and Fiesta has been moved up the nose to become the Fusion/Mondeo's grille, the headlamps are narrow slits that avoid the bug-eye (not to be confused with the Austin-Healey Sprite's) lamps infesting the rest of the midsize segment lately and the fast roofline gives the car an almost four-door coupe' look.

"You're the first to hear this," Samantha Hoyt, Fusion's marketing manager tells Motor Trend. "We will be the first to offer a gas, a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle." The Fusion Energi goes on sale roughly five months after the Fusion and Fusion Hybrid.

Ford says the on-sale date will be late summer, with serious stock getting into dealerships by early fall. The new '13 Honda Accord and Nissan Altima both launch within a few months of the Ford. Chevrolet will have the eAssist '13 Malibu Eco on sale for several months, though you'll have to wait until autumn if you want a non-Eco Malibu with the new 2.5-liter four. By then, we'll know whether Volkswagen's strategy of designing a bigger, specific Passat for North America (and China and South Korea) is successful in the marketplace.

Wow! Its that time again! Time for the best Auto Show in the U.S.A.!

Look here, my friends! Motor Trend's Auto Show! Take a quick trip to Detroit and see some amazing cars. Remember back a few years ago? Remember when there was nothing new, nothing exciting about the show? I sure do. Back then, I wouldn't cross the street to take in the show. I could see more by visiting my local dealerships! Now, I can give up shopping for used car parts and just dream about the new car I am buying. That really doesn't make sense, since Big Red can always use some more car parts!

Here are some excerpts from Motor Trend, telling us some of the features of the new Dodge Dart. Follow the link below to see more on what is featured on Motor Trend's Detroit Car Show.

Dual-tip exhaust pipes and 18-inch "hyper-black" wheels will be available. The Dart's interior features 10 standard airbags and a lot of soft-touch surfaces. Options will include blind-spot and cross-path detection, Nappa leather, a heated steering wheel, a reconfigurable 7-inch gauge cluster, and an 8.4-inch Uconnect touch screen in the center stack. Six-foot-four interior designer Klaus Busse demonstrated he fits comfortably in the rear seat and claims it has more legroom than a Hyundai Sonata.

The standout interior feature is optional "racetrack" lighting surrounding the instrument panel bezel. It has red LEDs, so that's the color you'll get no matter what interior trim you choose. Dodge showed a gray interior buck with Citrus Peel (neon yellow) piping and IP bezel surround.

Vauxhall Vectra, the Flagship of Vauxhall's Fleet

The practicality and comfort of Vauxhall Vectra
For a long time the Vauxhall Vectra was a flagship in Vauxhall’s fleet. It was a family saloon on the one hand, and a motorway workhorse on the next. It became synonymous with the company car, and was a staple part of British motoring for the last ten years after its introduction by Opel in 1988, and surviving in its various forms until 2008.
The Vectra was a solid and comfortable car, built for practicality. The ‘Eagle Eye’ headlights taper beautifully up the bonnet, giving a sporty edge.
The Insignia is a worthy successor to the Vauxhall Vectra and will do well to secure the same kinds of success. It has the presence and prowess to match any executive cruiser and the interior quality mean it may be looking to a higher end of the market than the previous Vauxhall Vectra.

Gas Stations So Long Ago

Mike's Show-N-Shine likes to pass on some good stuff that we have passed on to us.

So take a minute and stroll down memory lane and see what the old gas stations looked like.
I'll tell you now, it is all before my time!!

The place is a Texaco Gasoline Filling Station
(primarily they filled gas tanks)..
But what is that contraption with the ramps?
The mechanism appears to be driven by the cars wheels.
Hydraulic lines go to that can with a raised top.
What could it be? A pump for lubeing a car's under parts?
The little sign does say "Havoline" which was Texaco's brand name
for its oil products.
An early engine dynamometer?
Maybe it's a primitive car wash. I dunno, any guesses?

I guess there was no signage limitations back then.
I count eleven Texaco signs on that station.

Land wasn't at a premium then like it is now.
Note the wide open layout and the nice row of little trees.
This was a Texaco Gasoline Motor Oil Service Station.
The concept had become a "service station", which included more than
just filling your tank. They even filled it FOR you, no "self-service" needed.

Looks like an early "mall".At one location, you could fill up your tank,
get a loan so as to look prosperous with a new suit, and have a meal
while your spark plugs were changed.
Now, you almost will need a loan to fill the tank!

Ford Sales and Service. Look at all those Model T's.

Simplicity itself. No name gas and motor oil for 20 cents a quart, Wow.

Dome Gas. You better try it 'cause "It's Better".
It better be good since they want 23 cents a gallon for it!

Lemans' Tire Shop. Barney Oldfield tires only $9.99 each.
Sounds kind of expensive to me.
Note the water can by the side of the road and the barricades
around the trees.
I guess people just drove up on the sidewalk to get their tires
and the trees were in the way.

Here we have Super Motor Fuel.
I hear Dome Gas is better but this stuff is SUPER.

Note the name of the station "Toot-An-Kum-In". King Tut was big news
in the twenties so why not capitalize on it. This is a really modern looking
station with the full roof and multiple islands of pumps. AMOCO Gas
(still around today) but what does "filtered" mean.
Obviously they consider other gas to be "dirty"

4WD gas is only 20 cents a gallon!

Car Runs On Air Coming Soon

Can you believe it? Yes, a car that runs on compressed air. No kidding. It takes a small bit of electricity to fill up the on board tanks, and then it can go 175 to 225 miles on one charging. Max speed is 60 mph. I can wait a bit for the car to make it to 80. At a cost of only $15,000, it is a bargain. I read that India has one they say will sell for about $8,900. But it is about the size of a pile of dog poop.

It doesn't look too foolish of a car...kind of futurist. But if it can run just on air, think of the possibilities!

At the end of the clip, listen carefully about what the man is saying about adding a compressor to the car (that runs on air,) producing air continuously, and, what is that about a perpetual motion thing? Think about that!

Christmas Time Shopping for Car Parts

It's Christmas Time. Time for some serious shopping for relatives, friends and acquaintances. They all have cars, right?

I am going to give you some pointers. A place to go for the cool stuff. The different things used to fix up a car. Maybe just make it run or perform better...that is a good reason for thinking about buying car parts and accessories.

Something simple. Let's say we want a keyless entry for brother Bob's car. Click the link to find out where to go for keyless entry systems.

Like Driving on Air

Okay, so this picture of an aftermarket air suspension kit isn't exactly the sexiest automotive picture we've ever run. We know. A cherry 1968 Mustang Convertible this ain't, but a product like this can be quite exciting in its own way. It's not how it looks, but what it can do.

Is your car running a bit less smoothly than you would like in a perfect world? Of course, you might say that this isn't a perfect world. We can't argue with that, but why not try and make your personal corner of it as close to perfect as can be? In other words, if the roughness of your ride is bugging you a lot, there's no reason you should consider that an inevitability. If there is a way to make things better in your personal automotive world, why in the world should you not at least investigate purchasing the right aftermarket air suspension products for your car?

Of course, you don't have to purchase a kit. It may simply be a matter of a part or two that could potentially be swapped out, greatly improving your ride. Air bags, air compressors, air gauges, air over shocks, air suspension shocks, and air valves are just a few of the many items you might want to talk to your mechanic about.

Empire Does It Again, For My Dog!

Yes! They cover it all!! I recently received Empire's Deluxe Sta-Put Hammock Seat Cover. This is a washable cover that is quilted and fits any size car. It took five minutes to install and grips the seats like a well worn pair of gloves.

I have been very concerned about letting our little guy (Teddy) sit on the back seat. No, his toenails are not a problem for us, he is so small that I don't think he would puncture the seat. If you have a big dog, this could be a worry. But not with this Seat Cover! I also worried that if I were to stop or corner quickly, he might fall down between the front and back seat and get stuck. Again, he is a little guy. But not to worry with the Empire Seat Cover!

This cover has straps that slip over the front head rest and rear head rest and make a sling type cover. The little guy can't fall between the seats and get trapped! My wife has had Teddy sit on her lap as we travel. That is not very safe...if we were to stop quickly, he would fly into the dash. If we were to hit something and the air bag went off, well, little Teddy would be smashed like a bug.

The first day we went out for a ride after installing the seat cover, we put Teddy into the back seat. He walked over to the window and looked out. Then he walked back to the middle of the seat and laid down. Put his head on the soft material and was ready for his nap!

Empire Car Covers- Auto Wrap, Covering Everything!

This is really great! Mike's Show-N-Shine has a new advertiser and I bet you will love this company.

How many of you have a nice car...antique, classic, new or maybe even a rat rod and need a good quality cover to keep it safe from the elements? No, not one of those $19.95 covers that let water, dirt and dust in, but can really take care of the nasty things that fall, winter and spring might bring to the party. I have had inexpensive covers, medium quality covers but never a super high quality cover. Now I have one of the best! The stitching is quality, the cover itself feels like it would handle a mighty heavy hurricane! All along the bottom of the cover is an elastic strip sewn in with grommets available for easy use.

As I slipped it over my 71 Chevelle, it went on smoothly, covering the car like a glove. There are so many sizes that one must give the type of car so they can match the car to the cover. Don't worry about whether it will fit, just give them the type of car, truck or boat that you have and they will match it up.

Look through their on-line catalog and see what else they make. (Hint: auto, truck, boat, snowmobile,motorcle, ATV, RV, Patio, Tonneau, and even items for Pet Travel. They make it all)

Another product that you guys who have cars and take them to car shows. Have you ever gotten a stone chip while driving to the show? Bugs all over the front of the car? On the mirrors? The Road Wrap is the answer! Simply roll it onto the car (see the demonstration on the site) cut it to shape and you have protection from the elements. No more chips on that beautiful paint just finished last week. Or, in my case, painted 22 years ago and still chip free.....wow.

Howard City, Michigan Harvest Days Car Show

Where the heck is Howard City, Michigan? Well, it is about 50 miles north of Grand Rapids. A small town with a big heart, or so they say.

We have lived up here for five months now. Not actually in Howard City, although that is our mailing address. We live in Croton Township, about 7 miles west of Howard City. Croton is where the Muskegon River flows and there are two electricity making dams. Both hold back the water and create a wonderful playground for the million or so people of West Michigan.

So, if you ever want to find paradise, take a trip to the Newaygo County, Mecosta County, Muskegon County area and you will find thousands of lakes, dozens of rivers and beautiful small villages, cities and towns.

Back to the Howard City Harvest Days Car Show!

It was a warm but slightly overcast day. The people had come to see many outstanding exhibitions in the downtown area. All recently updated and beautified, I might add. The car show was in the park and about 60-70 cars participated.

Here are some of the cars that my wife and I saw. I can never get over the great paint jobs that are mostly done in the owners garage!

The 3rd Annual Mustang Show, presented by AmericanMuscle.com, is set to be one of the year's hottest Mustang-only events! Each year we celebrate our customer appreciation, as 750+ registered Mustangs and close to 2,500 enthusiasts get together for a full day packed with cars, contests, food, awards and more!

This year, we are supporting the Wounded Warrior Project whose mission is “to foster the most successful, well adjusted generation of wounded warriors in this nation’s history.” Due to the generous support of our fans, last year we were able to raise $14,825 for the Homes for our Troops.

Choosing a good used car; Making the right choice

How to pick out a good used car:

Have you thought about purchasing a used car? Each year, across America, millions of people mull over the same thing, and many act on it. Before you plunk down the cash on just any old car, give some thought to what goes into choosing a used car. Considering these points and options, rather than purchasing on impulse and ending up with buyer’s remorse, may save you a lot of heartache. It may be "just" a used car you are buying, but you want it to be a decision you can live with for a long time, one that will also bring pleasure.

Points to Consider:

There are many issues to consider when it comes to determining what to purchase. The decision you make will have an impact on everything from the cost of repairs, and even liability insurance. Start by answering the following questions realistically, which will help you narrow down which direction to go for your car shopping:

- What can you realistically afford to spend on a car? You need to come up with a budget that will not break the bank and force you to sell the car six months later.

- How far are you willing to travel to purchase the car you think is right for you? If your dream car is for sale halfway across the country, are you willing to make the arrangements to get it to you or to go there and get it? If so, that needs to be part of the budget.

- How much can you afford as an ongoing expense for this vehicle? Depending on what you purchase, your expenses may include insurance, maintenance, gas, and possibly even restoration.

- What might your top three choices be? If you could get any three cars, what would they be? This will help you narrow you choices down to the one that really will be a good buy.

Pulling it All Together

Once you have taken the time to answer the questions posed above, you will be well on your way to choosing the right used car for you. At this point, you are ready to start your search. To find more to choose from, be sure to cast a wider net than just in your local area. Even if transport or travel expenses are involved, it may still turn out to be the better buy.

Before even getting your used car, get some quotes on car insurance. Also, check out second hand cars for sale. It might just help you find the right one!

In the end, picking out a good used car will basically come down to what your budget can afford and what your heart desires. Working within those two points, you will also need to keep the ancillary expenses in mind. If you stay within your budget and get a car you love, you will likely never have regrets.

Well, Mike's Show-N-Shine is all moved in to its new location. I have not posted in oh! so long! But I had better get busy! Summer is here and the car shows, show-n-shines, drive-ins....they are here!!

Moving day for Mike's Show-N-Shine

Big changes at the home of the editor/writer/photographer at Mike's Show-N-Shine! After two years of attempting to sell our home here in Jamestown, Michigan, we have a happy buyer! They are getting a very nice home and I am sure they will love the area.

What is happening to Mike's Show-N-Shine? Nothing that will make a change as to what is being written, but we will be taking in some car shows that are not in the area we are used to. We will be moving 60 miles to the north to the community of Newaygo, Michigan and will begin attending shows this summer in that community as well as the others that border this city. Mostly smaller shows, but that is where we have found some of the nicest cars we have ever reviewed.

We are busy packing, boxing up years of "stuff," and deciding what to keep and what to throw away. Mike's Show-N-Shine has been published from this small L shaped desk, sitting in the corner of the office for the past five years. I am not sure of where I will put the new desk, but we will see when we get there. My wife has been working with a company called Wayfair for the past year and we will be purchasing many items from them for the new home.

As a side note, I know that many of our readers face moving their families also. Some are moving because of a job change, some because they want better weather, and some because they are forced to because of financial circumstances. Sometimes you need a long term car rental for use during the move. Sometimes you might be looking for a long term van rental for moving your home goods. Find a good company and you will be comfortable with your rental. Just remember, try to have fun. Make the experience a pleasure instead of a bad memory!

For you, my fine readers, nothing will look or be different in the published word. Just new cars from new areas. So continue to stop in every once in a while and see what is cooking here at Mike's Show-N-Shine!!

Hagerty Classic Car Tour by Luther's Cruisers Car Club

Wow, does time fly or what? I have been anxious to do this article ever since our wonderful visit to the Hagerty Classic Car Insurance Company in Traverse City, Michigan. So much going on with the selling of our house and the purchasing of our new home in Newaygo, Michigan.

So, let's take the trip to Traverse City and see what Hagerty has to offer us!

We started out on a quite clear day, but the roads were anything but clear. Some of the roads were heavily snow covered but we took our convoy up north with no incidents. Stopping for a rest in a small town, we organized ourselves and arrived in Traverse City at the Hagerty garages with great expectations. And we were not disappointed!! We were greeted by Anji and Bev who graciously welcomed us and took us inside to see the first group of classic cars. Once inside, we met Jonathan and Randy who gave us a tour of these cars and explained who owned them and how they got into the Hagerty collection.

This is the main office in downtown Traverse City. This is not where we gathered. Their other location has all the goodies, although the beautiful woodie in the window was something to see!

Jonathan is doing something very unusual. He is determined to drive his Ford Model "A" all winter long. Every day, even in this unusually cold and snowy winter, Jonathan hops into his Model "A" and heads to work. He is truly having a great time, although, I would think on occasion, on those very cold days, he wishes he really had some heat in the car!!

This is the car that Jonathan is driving all winter. Even if it had a heater, it works off the exhaust manifold and blows the heat into the cab....when the car is moving....

Anji tells some stories for us, too. Randy and Jonathan had a bunch of car guys mesmerized by the information given to them about these unique cars.

A quick break for a wonderful lunch. My wife, Janie, couldn't say enough good about the lunch. It was catered by a local restaurant and was delicious! I think we might visit that restaurant next time we take a trip to Traverse City! The Euro Stop Cafe is a place to visit for lunch in Traverse City.

Some of the unique items that are on view in the garage. Motorcycles, motor boat engines and even a vintage popcorn machine! Rare stuff!

This is a car that is driven daily in the summer. It is owned by the daughter. She loves to drive it around town and I bet it gets plenty of looks! What a sharp baby bird!

This Model "A" Ford was actually rebuilt from the ground up by the office employees! Yes, to make sure that the employees who answer the phones when you call actually know something about antique cars, Hagerty invites all of them to lay hands on the cars and help rebuild them. Painting, body work, rebuilding engines, transmissions, gearing...etc...they learn so much that when you say you have a limited slip rear end in your 75 Corvette, they know what you are talking about.

We are gathered around the Darrin. This car is rare. Only a few exist today. The doors slide into the front fender!

A great big thank you to Anji who set this up for us. And to Bev who was very helpful and had plenty to tell us, too. Jonathan is full of knowledge as is Randy. Our thanks to all of you. You treated us very well, and we will never forget your kindness.

CABIN FEVER IN THE GREAT NORTH

During the winter, I get cabin fever just like many of us in the Northern part of the world. The days are dark, the snow is white, the wind blows more, chilling us to the bone. We all dream of nice, sunshiny days.

Since most who read my ramblings on Mike's Show-N-Shine are car lovers, we dream of the car show where our own car shines and might just win the award. Well, again, since I am the dreamer here, I am dreaming of this special show. It is now past the middle of January and I see February coming...a month of only 28 days, and then March, when, close to the end of the month, one might feel some warmer (50ish) days.

Then comes one of my favorite months, April. The daffodils are popping up on the sunny (60ish) days and crocus are peeking their little purple heads up to take a look for summer. The days are warm enough to actually take the cover off Big Red and see its beautiful poppy red paint. I open the door and sit in the seat, looking at the dash, dreaming of when the speedometer will show that he is actually moving down the road. Get the picture?!!

Thinking of the many things to do when spring arrives, I also think about the cheapest auto insurance. I know, in the spring, I must review the insurance on my PT Cruiser and renew it on Big Red. So, that done, I go back to dreaming about the first car show of the season!

Well, it ain't time yet!! Dream on little guy! But, Mike's Show-N-Shine has no lack of pictures of summer and the car shows that pop up all over Western Michigan.

So, since we have another 2-3 months of dreaming before it happens, let's look back at some of the beautiful cars from 4 years ago when Mike's Show-N-Shine first started posting them. I hope you have a good time looking. Before long, we will all be doing the shows!

Insurance for your Family Van

Cheap Van Insurance Policy

We’re all trying to save money in the current economic climate. When you’re looking for a cheap van insurance policy it can be tempting to simply go for the lowest quotation.

But you need to check that your van is covered for all its intended uses. For example, if you’re planning to use the van in your business you’ll need to pay a higher premium than if the van is purely for personal use. Having more than one driver on the policy will probably push the premium up, as will keeping expensive tools or equipment in the van overnight.

So it’s important to get the right cover, even if that does mean a higher premium. And it’s important to give your insurer all the relevant information on your van and what it’s used for. If the insurance company thinks you’ve given false information – or withheld some information – then they almost certainly won’t pay out in the event of a claim.

Are there are any steps you can take to cut the costs of your van insurance? Here are three simple ideas:

Keep your van in a garage overnight, not on the street
Don’t leave any valuable tools or equipment in the van overnight
And if you’re van doesn’t have one, make sure you have an alarm or immobiliser fitted

But once you’ve taken those steps, where can you look for cheap van insurance? Clearly the internet is the main starting for many van owners these days, but all the various options – particularly on the price comparison sites – can be confusing.
