I wanted to focus on creating something self-contained, and portable – so as a result, my initial hunt was for a ‘flight case’ to house all of the cool stuff! I searched for quite some time before settling on the Rock Box 2 Utility Case, which is the perfect combination of rigidity and compactness.

The Pi is running a copy of Kali Linux with the default toolset as expected, but also some additional pieces of open source software.

Using eBay as my primary source for parts I went on the hunt for ‘panel mount’ adapters to basically replicate the Raspberry Pi’s ports to the outside of the Rock Box. Thus both reducing the stress placed on the Pi itself but also making it much easier to plug in when moving from site to site.

Although the current iteration is doing its job perfectly, I already have a few upgrades planned… I’d like to reduce the requirement for plugging this into Electric, so a ‘built in’ battery is planned. Also, some of the external USB ports are in use inside the case for various jobs, so a USB hub would enable both to be used similtaniously.

Whats Involved..?

As the Rock Box 2 Utility Case came with the push-out foam, getting it all seated inside the box was pretty straightforward. I did cut some channels out of the underside of the foam for some semblance of cable management and in an attempt to keep everything tidy. I also glued some of the foam to the base at points where I wanted to ‘elevate’ some of the hardware.

The hardest part of the job was cutting the holes in the case to house the panel mount connectors. To make the cutting easier I actually made some templated with my 3D printer… Then enrolled my much more competent dad to actually do the cutting!

Cool! But how much!?

The project budget was £400, which I managed to stay just below – coming in at a cool £372.41

The table below highlights the parts I used, with links to where to get them. Caveats – prices will likely have changed since I started the project, also – the below links may route through affiliate programs this is to help pay for hosting fees.

The table is missing a few things I already had laying around TP-Link TL-WN722N (V1) and a Seagate 2TB hard drive, for storing rainbow tables on.

So whats next?

Although I purchased the LED’s I didn’t really do anything with them during this iteration. so I would like to get those wired up to add a status light at least.

I’ll be ordering a USB battery pack at some stage to make the unit truly standalone.

I’d also like to customise the OS a little more, to make it easier to interact with from the touch screen. Despite the inclusion of the bluetooth keyboard in the box.

There are a wide range of AntiVirus products on the market, ranging from free to pay for applications. Some even with subscriptions. One I generally tend to suggest to my friends and family is Sophos Home which is completely free to use in the home environment.

Lock down your login

Two-factor authentication is a good place to start with securing your online accounts

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an additional layer of protection beyond your password. It significantly decreases the risk of a hacker accessing your online accounts by combining your password (something you know) with a second factor, like your mobile phone (something you have). Many of the world’s largest websites have made 2FA readily available from the security settings of your online accounts, but it’s up to you to turn on this free feature. Two factor all the things

It’s important two protect your online service accounts, perhaps even more so than your own home. Your online accounts can be accessed and potentially ‘attacked’ by millions of people from all around the world, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Unlike your home, they don’t even need to leave the comfort of their ?basement? before ‘having a go’ at breaking into your account.

First things first; you should always use a strong password when setting up accounts online, and never reuse passwords on more than one website. I personally recommend (and use daily) LastPass which can be easily integrated into your daily workflow, using either it’s desktop/mobile app or its web browser plugins.

However, databases are breached and passwords are stolen. These things happen! So it’s best to also secure all of your online accounts using multifactor (also known as two factor, two-step and multistep) authentication. This acts as a second method to double check it is infact the owner of the account who is trying to access the service. This may sound complicated… However…

It’s not as complicated as it may first seem

As multifactor authentication has now become almost the norm for online services, the guys over at Turn On 2FA have made it super simple to search for, and follow instructions on how to enable multifactor authentication on all the sites and services that currently support it.

As a big fan of the Apple Ecosystem, I am very much used to entering my vitals into the Apple Health App. One area which I am not very good at is maintaining my levels of hydration. I have a busy schedule, a stressful job and a whole host of other excuses I can use…

As an Apple Watch and smart scales owner most of my vitals are already automatically pushed to the health app, and although I’ve tried using many hydration tracking apps I often forget to update them. Which is when I decided a ‘smart bottle’ was the way to go. After a little bit of research, I settled on the Ozmo Smart Water Bottle.

Hands-On: Ozmo Smart Water Bottle

I’ve owned the water bottle since July 2018, so I think it’s fair that I make note of my thoughts on the bottle. Overall I am impressed with it, there are some pitfalls and some annoyances, but they don’t bother me enough to dump it and find a replacement.

Design

The overall design of the bottle I think is good, it’s ergonomic and fits well in your hand, it also has a handy carry handle on the top, which unlike some others is fixed in place. I actually like this. The lid on the top of the bottle does a good job of filling the spout to prevent any leakage once full. Which I’ve proved to work perfectly, as I’ve hopped around the house on crutches whilst holding the bottle.

Smarts

The Ozmo iPhone app looks like it was designed for the iPhone 5, and doesn’t scale well at all on newer iPhone models. Definitely not well on my iPhone X. However, I am happy to dismiss this, as that’s not so important to me. What does get tricky sometimes is the keyboard often lays over and doesn’t collapse correctly on some of the screens, which renders the application next to useless at times. It does also seem to have a tendency to crash frequently. Although the Ozmo brand and company look well established with a range of smart hydration tracking products for sale, the iOS app is definitely an afterthought.

Although the Ozmo app leaves a lot to be desired, the measuring of the fluids, your intake and the reminders given by the bottle work well. Inside the bottle is a channel which contains sensors to measure how much fluid you’ve consumed. This is transferred via Bluetooth to the Ozmo app and then from there is synced to the Apple Health app without issue. The bottle is also smart enough to know if you’re drinking a cold or hot drink!

Function

As I am trying to improve my levels of hydration, I generally (more often than not) use the bottle for cold drinks (mainly water), for which the bottle functions perfectly fine delivering everything you’d expect (no leaks). I have on occasion used the bottle to carry hot coffee, and each time I have I’ve been impressed with the length of time the bottle keeps the drink piping hot. So much so that almost the first thing I do when I sit down without is remove the lid to allow it to cool a bit quicker. All in all, I can’t argue with the function at all – it really does what it says on the tin… (or website at least)

Price

When I purchased the Ozmo bottle it was much cheaper then it is now (by at least £10) so I think I’d be reluctant to pay the £45.65 price quoted on amazon currently. Perhaps if/when the bottle is on offer again, I’d be tempted.

On my MacBook I use the GPG Suite in order to keep my sensitive data secure, including data which I upload to the cloud. Encrypting files is something I do frequently, so I put together a small automator folder action to automatically encrypt files dropped into a specific folder.

For this to work, you’ll need the GPG Suite installed, with a private key setup. You’ll also need to adjust the ‘–recipient’ option in the bash code listed below.

Once the file has been encrypted it deletes the unencrypted copy, so be sure to keep your key safe.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM)

This October marks the 15th NCSAM which is co-lead by NCSA & Cyber. As part of my role at my current employer, one of my main focuses is on the business and its staff’s Cybersecurity compliance and awareness. This is also something I am pationate about outside of work. Therefore, I have registered to become a NCSAM Champion.

Whilst acting as an NCSAM Champion, I will be helping to promote their efforts to increase knowledge around the Cybersecurity subject. The following is a description from the Apple website:

1. Power off your Mac
2. Press and hold CMD + R on your Mac keyboard
3. From the Utilities menu, select Terminal
4. Copy and paste or type in the following:

   csrutil disable
   reboot

Once El Capitan has finished booting back up, you should be able to perform your advanced file manipulation without any more operation not permitted messages.

It is worth bearing in mind, if you leave this switched off you’re leaving your Mac vunerable to accidental or malicious system level file changes, which could result in it needing a complete reinstall or worse. So unless you are a confident advanced user, it would be worth repeating the steps above but replacing disable with enable.

Moving Hazard will release on Early Access with a robust feature set, including cutting-edge Unreal Engine 4 graphics, loadout customizations, two player Factions with three classes, four maps, four game modes, and eight unique weapons. In addition, the game will offer more than 30 Player Perks, more than 50 Weapon Mods, matchmaking and lobby services, and a Player Hideout, where players can level up, upgrade and select personalized skills. 

Psyop Games and IllFonic will continue development of Moving Hazard throughout the Early Access process, responding to community feedback to add and tweak major feature additions and other upgrades. The game will enter a full release on Steam later this year.
