If you only looked at snowpack, 2026 would appear to be a low water year across Utah. But this year is anything but typical! A rare combination of historic low snowpack and emergency reservoir releases is setting up one of the most unusual rafting seasons in the history of the Green and Colorado Rivers. While the surrounding landscape remains dry, the rivers themselves will be flowing stronger than expected.

2026 Utah Water Conditions: Snapshot

As of May 2026, Utah whitewater has two factors that will characterize the entire season:

• Upper Colorado Basin snowpack: ~25–30% of average
• Lake Powell levels: Critically low

The result? Federal officials have ordered a massive release of 660,000 to 1,000,000 acre-feet from Flaming Gorge Reservoir to prevent Lake Powell from reaching “dead pool” status. This will mean more water, longer seasons, and surprisingly consistent flow for certain rivers.

• What to Expect: A “big water” feel all summer. Technical rapids like Upper Disaster and Hell’s Half Mile will lose their rocky, “boney” character and become much more flush and powerful.

Desolation Canyon (Green River)

Deso is usually a gamble in low-snow years. However, the Flaming Gorge release changes everything in 2026! Running this section of river in July and August with flows typically reserved for June is a rare treat.

• Projected Flows: ~3,000–6,000 CFS sustained through summer.
• What to Expect: Remarkably consistent whitewater. The extra volume eliminates the dreaded “rock gardens” at Joe Hutch Canyon and Three Fords, making it ideal for multi-day trips even in the peak heat of summer.

Cataract Canyon (Colorado River)

This is where the story gets wild. Because Lake Powell’s elevation is projected to stay near record lows despite the extra water, the geography of the lower canyon is literally being rewritten. Long-submerged features are re-emerging and changing the character of the river.

• Projected Flows: 5,000–10,000+ CFS
• What to Expect: Big waves and a changing landscape. Rapids like Gypsum Canyon and Dark Canyon may make an appearance, making 2026 a rare opportunity to experience a changing canyon.

Castle Valley (Moab Daily – Colorado River)

• What to Expect: Steady, Class I-II+ rapids. Perfect for families and half-day adventures throughout the entire summer.

Best Time to Raft Utah in 2026

• June: The transition month as emergency releases ramp up.
• July – August: The sweet spot. While other Western rivers are drying up, Utah’s Green River system will be at prime “Fun water” levels.
• September – October: Steady, and Strong. The releases are scheduled through April 2027, ensuring a fantastic late-season window.

Precision and Punch: 116–160 CFS

• Typical Season: Often seen as the river is stabilizing post-runoff, perhaps late July.
• The Experience: The current is noticeably faster than the lowest flows, but the rapids still require sharp, timely paddling. This is a fantastic ‘Goldilocks’ zone for intermediate rafters. The legendary Class IV rapids of the “Beavers” and “Lower Canyon” sections are runnable, offering a substantial punch without the chaotic fury of high water. You’ll drop into big holes with the river briefly disappearing from view, enjoying fast-and-fun hits and splashes that mostly keep the action focused waist-down, ensuring a thrilling yet controllable ride.

The Splash Zone Emerges: 160–250 CFS

• Typical Season: The second half of July.
• The Experience: Here, Clear Creek starts to truly come alive. Beyond the river’s drops, waves begin to form, and the continuous rapids feel more powerful. Splashes start to soak the whole boat, preparing you for the full white water experience. The Lower Canyon becomes a remarkable blend of white water holes that try to swallow the raft and technical maneuvering, where your guide must read the water and execute the line perfectly. Continuous Thrills: 250–350 CFS

• Typical Season: A common flow for late May and early July.

• Typical Season: Typically found during the peak runoff period from mid-June to early July.

The Class IV drops start to clean up, becoming smoother, more powerful descents, while the white water holes begin to show their true bite. Peak Runoff: 501–910 CFS

• Typical Season: Early to mid-June, depending on the snowpack. This is the classic high-water season.
• The Experience: The creek is a roaring, continuous beast at these levels. The Class IV sections are absolutely not for the timid. They require strong, synchronized paddling from the crew to power through massive holes and over standing waves that crash and break right over the bow of the boat. The middle section, which is a tame technical run at low water, now offers big, rolling Class III and IV waves and thrilling hits. The Full Send: 910+ CFS

• Typical Season: This is a rare and epic level, occurring only during exceptional snowpack years or following heavy spring rains.

What’s fascinating is that while the white water holes are visually unnerving—massive, churning features—the speed of the river is so great that it often flushes the boat right through them before they can fully stall the raft. The crew must work in unison, utilizing specialized techniques like prying and draw strokes to navigate the twisted and sliding channels. You might have to walk the raft over exposed shoals and cobble bars to get to the next drop, but the challenge is part of the fun. This is an awesome outdoor adventure in one of Arizona’s most amazing canyons.
• 275 – 400 CFS: At this level, the water exposes numerous rocks, making the navigation a true test of skill. Constricted channels and steep chutes require precise maneuvering to avoid getting stuck. While the pace between rapids slows down, it gives you a chance to truly soak in the towering walls of the canyon, marveling at the clear water as it winds its way through majestic granite, basalt, and sandstone.
• 400 – 600 CFS: Near the end of the season, the river can become quite technical. Class III rapids are still there, but you’ll need to work with your crew to push and bounce the boat to get through the constricted, twisting channels. Surfing opportunities abound at rapids like “Overboard,” and the chance of getting stuck is part of the fun. This level is perfect for those who appreciate the challenge of negotiating a more intricate waterway.
• 600 – 900 CFS: As the water level drops from mid-March to mid-May, the river begins to reveal its technical side. The rapids become more chute-like, requiring paddlers to work together with precision to avoid rocks and getting stuck. Rapids remain solid Class III, with fantastic opportunities to try surfing a wave in the warm water. This is an excellent time to appreciate the beautiful desert oasis and the challenge of a fast, splashy run.
• 900 – 1500 CFS: This is a common flow from March to early May. You’ll find plenty of Class III rapids on all trips, with multi-day adventures still enjoying some Class IV action. The pools between rapids are longer at this level, giving you more time to soak in the incredible scenery of the canyon. You’ll still get plenty of splashes and thrilling hits, but with a bit less intensity than at higher flows. For a more adventurous option at this level, ask about our Premium Boats!
• 1500 – 2500 CFS: From mid-March through early April, you’ll find an awesome balance of thrilling white water and a slightly decreased chance of capsizing. The one-day trip is packed with Class III and III+ action, while multi-day trips still hold exciting Class IV rapids in the lower gorges. The popular “Overboard” rapid becomes particularly exciting at this level, and you’ll enjoy a full day of soaker waves throughout the trip.
• 2500 – 4500 CFS: Typically occurring in mid-March during a big snow year, this level delivers exciting white water and a whole lot of action. You’ll get plenty of big, Class III wave trains and soaker waves that will drench everyone in the raft. On the one-day trip, two of the rapids become solid Class IVs. This is an awesome level for the rapids in White Rock Canyon and a guaranteed day of huge splashes and roller-coaster waves.
• 4500 – 15,000 CFS: This is a rare level, reserved for the most adventurous souls looking for a major adrenaline rush. The river transforms into a beast of huge, drenching waves and long sets of continuous, roaring rapids. At this level, several rapids become a true Class IV, and some even push the limits of IV+. This is not for the timid! You’ll find yourself battling numerous large holes capable of flipping rafts, and on day trips, you might even run the first seven miles twice because crossing Cibecue Creek is too challenging.

For those with personal experience or the desire to go it alone, a stand-up paddleboard is an excellent vessel for exploring the Animas’s peaceful, flatwater stretches. Just like our recommendations for tubing the Animas, we can’t stress enough that the mellow sections are the only suitable option for unguided paddleboarding. These stretches offer a beautiful experience where the gentle current allows you to relax and enjoy the serene environment.

The most recommended and accessible route for a self-guided paddleboard adventure is the stretch from Oxbow Park to the 32nd Street Bridge. This section of the river is characterized by a calm, consistent flow and a few fun, mild ripples. It’s a fantastic choice for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. As you glide along, you’ll pass beautiful riverside homes, lush vegetation, and get an incredible view of the glacially created Animas River Valley.

Some considerations before venturing out on your stand up paddle boarding adventure include:

• River Safety: You must know how to read the water, identify potential hazards like submerged rocks, fallen trees (strainers), and how to perform a self-rescue if you fall off your board.
• Water Levels: We recommend people paddle board on the river only at 2,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) or below. At higher flows, it becomes difficult to paddle upstream even on the flat sections, and the rapids are too large to navigate without professional experience. • Paddling Technique: You need to have a solid grasp of how to paddle effectively, steer the board, and maintain your balance in a variety of conditions, even in the absence of major rapids.
• River Regulations: You are responsible for knowing and adhering to all local rules and regulations, including where to legally put in and take out.

Emergency Preparedness: Have a plan for every contingency. You’ll need to know what to do if you lose your board, get swept downstream, or need assistance. Unlike a guided trip, you don’t have a professional with rescue gear and a plan right by your side.

Inflatable Kayak Rentals:

However, rentals are only recommended for the calmer sections of the river when flowing under 1800 CFS, and only for intermediate paddlers comfortable with self-rescue. The Recommended Kayaking Float (Calm Water)

The calmer stretches of the river, especially from Oxbow Park to the 32nd Street bridge, are perfect for a gentle, scenic float. Use this as your guide to plan your self-guided adventure:

A Critical Warning: The river’s character changes significantly past the 9th Street Bridge as it approaches the Santa Rita Whitewater Park, where Class III rapids like “Smelter” await. It is never recommended to proceed past the 9th Street Bridge in an unguided inflatable kayak if you are a novice or do not have Class III self-rescue experience. These features are challenging and require a high level of skill and experience to navigate successfully.

Kayaking Tips & Tricks for a Rental Adventure

To maximize your rental experience, keep these pro tips in mind:

• Secure Your Gear: Use a dry bag with a clip to secure your phone, keys, and snacks to your boat. The river will try to claim anything loose! Dry bags can be purchased at the Mild to Wild office.
• Wear Appropriate Footwear: Water shoes or sandals with heel straps are essential. Flip-flops will be lost the second you step out of the boat or hit a wave. Wetsuit boots are available for rent for $7/pair. 
• Avoid Cotton: Wear a swimsuit or quick-drying clothing. Cotton stays wet, which can lead to chilling, even on a warm day. Wetsuits and paddle jackets are highly recommended for colder days or high water. Wetsuits are available for rent for $10 each.
• Be Your Own Guide: You must know how to read the river, identify hazards like strainer logs or exposed rocks, and know exactly what to do if you capsize.
• Stay Hydrated: Bring water! A secured water bottle is a must, especially during the peak summer months. Carabiners are available in the gift shop for purchase to secure your water bottle.
• Know the Rules: No open containers of alcohol or glass containers are allowed on the river. Pack out all your trash.
• Yield to Others: Be polite to anglers (move to the opposite side of the river to pass) and yield to downstream boats when necessary.

The good news: it can be concluded that the park will remain open with the support of Moab and Mild to Wild will continue to be operating tours.
