Since the first time I profiled Detours Coffee in Denver, they have been busy! First of all, they have added tons of food items to a great and very inexpensive menu. Second, and most notably is that their coffee is now FREE (CoFREE). I am currently enjoying a $2.00 chorizo breakfast burrito and sipping on some of their coffee (iMack is their roaster).

The free coffee a "pay it forward" philosophy that they say is working, with people choosing to enjoy their free coffee and then do something for others. Pretty cool concept. It's also getting them some attention, and they have been featured on CNN and numerous regional and local media outlets.

Did I mention the coffee is free?

Coffee, Community and [insert your business here]

I recently wrote a post on my other blog about coffeeshops and community, comparing it to my line of work. I thought the viewers of this blog might find it interesting, and possibly applicable to your areas of business.

Coffeehouses, Community & Student Housing

Anyone who knows me well knows I'm a bit of a coffeehouse fanatic. I particularly love the small, independent, funky places. In traveling around the country to our communities, I always find the local coffee houses and tend to do work there at night rather than in the hotel room. I'm actually currently at Geez Louise, a coffee shop between home and the office.

I serve on an advisory board at a local high school with David Boyan, the owner of Caffe Sanora, who is a former business teacher turned coffee shop owner. After a board meeting recently, I asked Dave why he decided to start a coffee shop. He told me about his experience with a coffeehouse in college where he found a place where people felt a sense of community and connection. He wanted to create that experience (and has done so quite well by the way). He has shared in the past how he loves the variety of people who come to the same place from completely different backgrounds and experiences. They come for more than the great coffee. They come for connection and for community. They come for an experience. Dave fondly reflected on his diverse clientele who would otherwise never be likely to be sitting together sharing a conversation were it not for coffee and his coffeehouse.

His reply got me thinking about community, and of course, about student housing. I tend to think about these things a lot. :-)

Our approach to student housing @campusadvantage focuses on this same idea of building a community experience. We don't always use coffee (although it comes in handy for our finals events), but we try to find ways to bring together groups of people with different backgrounds and experiences to share in an experience of community and connection. I'll be writing more posts about community as this blog evolves. Next time you are at your local hangout (mine are all coffeeshops, but yours could be the pub, the park, or anywhere else people gather to connect), think about community.

How can you foster this at your property?
What experiences can you provide to bring people together?
How do you intentionally design opportunities to build relationships?

Do you manage buildings or do you build community?

Detours Coffee Shop is located just east of Quebec on Colfax. This welcome addition to East Colfax has plenty of seating, free wifi, a big screen TV with comfortable seating, and a very friendly team.

They serve IMACK Coffee and currently have a limited food

selection, but will be expanding as they grow. They plan to offer sandwiches and other food along with a wide variety of drinks.

Their coffee prices are very low (see photo below), and they also have plenty of off-street parking, which is a rarity for Colfax businesses. Please drop in and check them out!

This coffee shop is located on the East end of the 16th street mall and has a "lodge" feel to it, making it a nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of downtown Denver. They serve Silver Canyon Coffee and have the usual pastries & sweets, along with a variety of foods, including a salad bar!

It's hard to classify The Shoppe. At it's heart, I suppose it's a bakery (the cupcakes are AMAZING, but they also make cookies, pies, wedding cakes and other sweet treats.

The Shoppe also serves coffee (Ümpire Estate Mountain Roasters), has plenty of seating, offers free Wifi, and is open late (2am on Friday & Saturday). See their site for current hours.

We dropped by on Saturday during story hour, sponsored by the Tattered Cover. The kiddos get a free mini-cupcake or a free cereal topping, and enjoy great stories and even an activity.

If you like cereal, you won't be disappointed. Choose from just about every cereal you could think of, or try one of their combinations like "Chocolaty Goodness" = Coco Puffs + Cocoa Krispies + M&M’s.

They also have a retail section with books, apparel, artwork and other misc stuff.

I decided to drop into the Denver Public Library today for a puppet show with my daughters and noticed the shop changed hands (in February 09). What was previously Library Cafe (Now added to the cemetery) is now The Coffee Mug. They serve Elevation Coffee along with an assortment of goodies including Udi's sandwiches.

Coffee tasting at Starbucks

Some of our local indie shops need to start doing these! (Coffee tasting/lecture). Very interesting. They had 4 different coffees, paired with chocolate, green pepper, grapefruit, and mushrooms... all to bring out various tastes in the coffees.

Caffe Sanora (Colfax & Lafayette) is doing a "social coffee experiment" this week and giving away a free coffee to any follower on Twitter. Spread the word!

All you have to do is follow them using twitter at http://www.twitter.com/caffesanora (If you are not already a twitter user, you'll need to create an account).

When you come in (through the end of the day Friday), just tell them your twitter username, and you get 1 free drink (Beer and wine not included - yes... they have a liquor license now!)

The Blogger team have added a new 'Geotagging' feature to Blogger in Draft which enables you to add a location to each of your blog posts. This will then display in your post-footer section (near your post labels, timestamp, etc), and will act as a link to a page on Google Maps where readers can learn more about the location."
