From time to time, we need to call upon one of our volunteers to help represent us. Are you interested in representing Miles of Hope at an event or function in your neighborhood? If so, please consider attending a Volunteer Network Workshop. A volunteer training session for the Volunteer Network will occur at Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament in LaGrange on August 7, at 11:00 am. It will not last more than 30 minutes. Please spread the word to any and all interested.

Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation Executive Director, Pari Forood receives a donation from the Builders Association of the Hudson Valley from a charity golf event they organized and sponsored. All money raised by or donated to Miles of Hope is used to fund breast cancer support programs in the Hudson Valley.

Our 7th Goals for Hope tournament will be held August 7 in LaGrangeville, NY.  This year we will be CELEBRATING SURVIVAL, while also honoring the memory of our dear friend and Goals for Hope committee member, Margaret DeSa.

Attention SURVIVORS: How have you been affected by Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation (including any or all of our events)? A written testimonial is what we are asking for, and if anyone needs help expressing herself, Rihana is willing to assist! All information should be sent to Rihana at rihana@ravdesigninc.com. This written affirmation will be printed in our Goals for Hope booklets to help with this year’s mission to Celebrate Survival!

Last night at the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce Empowerment Awards, Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation founders were honored for their commitment to the community and to the women of the Hudson Valley.

Local breast cancer survivor and IBM employee Lynne Kopac nominated the two women because she felt they embodied the concept of empowerment.

“I help to organize the Family Fun Run every year and I see Cathy and Dana’s dedication to this foundation and to helping people with breast cancer,” Kopac said

“We are just thrilled,” Effron explained, “first to have Lynne, a good friend and great volunteer, nominate us and then to be recognized by your peers as empowering is such an honor for us.”

Miles of Hope sponsors 5 events every year – Hoops for Hope Women’s Basketball Tournament, The Annual Spring Brunch, Family Fun Run, Goals for Hope Women’s Soccer Tournament and the Community Walk for Breast Cancer.

“Each year we try to emphasize exercise, good nutrition and general attention to health as essential to lessening the risk for breast cancer,” Mrs. Varunok said, “helping women become healthier is definitely empowering!”

Scholarship Awards 2010

The purpose of the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation Scholarship is to assist students who have been affected by breast cancer in some way.  Scholarships of $1,000 in value were awarded to recipients in the Hudson Valley.  The scholarships are not renewable, however a recipient may reapply in subsequent years while they are in college. Eligibility Requirements: In order to be eligible to be considered for a scholarship, an applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

• Have been affected by breast cancer in some way.
• Reside within one of the eight New York State counties covered by the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation; Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester and Ulster.
• Must plan to attend/or be attending an accredited college, university or trade school.  (Scholarship checks will only be mailed to the school to be attended by the scholarship winner.)

Recipients are chosen by a Scholarship Committee comprised of three Miles of Hope Board members and three teachers or former teachers and a Vice President from the Community Foundation of Dutchess County. The scholarship recipients by county: Dutchess: Emily Rokitowski, Sacred Heart University; Clarice Muron-Bendaoud, Spackenkill High School attending St. Joseph’s University in the fall Orange: John Denmead, Warwick Valley High School attending U Mass, Amherst in the fall Westchester: Kristine Greco, Tuckahoe High School Putnam: Samantha Sullivan – Pace University Ulster: Chelsea DeFino, Saugerties High School attending St. John’s University in the fall; Leah Foscaldi, Highland High School attending Penn State in the Fall Rockland: Christina Marcelus, Ramapo High School attending Drexel University in the fall

This will be a sprint triathlon: 500 yard swim, 9 mile bike ride, 3 mile run.

A portion of the proceeds will go to the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.

Fees: $70 till June 13, then $80 till June 25. This is a USAT sanctioned event. An additional fee of $10 is required if you do not have a USAT license.
