Military allowances are provided to the service members of the military to help them with their expenses of daily life. These allowances have the greatest benefit that they are non taxable. These allowances include basic allowance for housing (BAH), basic allowance for subsistence (BAS), cost of living allowance (COLA), family separation allowance (FSA) and clothing allowance.

Military life carries its own perks and privileges and a handsome salary is one such incentive. While the civilians are worried about the unemployment issues, a soldier is free from this worry. He is ensured that his job is secure and he will continue receiving a salary that can be used by him in the best possible manner.

Military Allowances

The allowances admissible to the soldiers are a lucrative feature of the salary. These allowances give a boost to the pay of the soldiers. These allowances may be subject to fulfillment of certain pre-conditions. The biggest advantage of these allowances is that they are non-taxable. A few of these allowances are explained below:-

Family Separation Allowance (FSA)

This is an allowance which is admissible to all the soldiers in case they have to serve at a duty station away from their homes and families. This allowance is given at a fixed rate of $250 per month for all ranks of soldiers. The allowance is admissible to soldiers irrespective of their place of duty. A soldier employed on oversees duty is also entitled to this allowance.

Basic Allowance For Housing (BAH)

This allowance caters for the expenditure incurred on renting an accommodation. This is admissible when the living quarters are not provided by the army and a soldier has to make his own arrangement for the self and the family. This allowance varies from rank to rank and generally is a percentage of the basic salary. In addition, it is affected by the marital status and the place of the duty.

Basic Allowance For Subsistence (BAS)

This allowance is meant to cater for the ration requirements of a soldier. Any person drawing this allowance has to pay for his own meal even if it is being provided by the government. It does not look after the spouses or the children and so it is unaffected by the marital status.

However, there is a variation in its rates for the officers and soldiers. It is fixed at $223.04 for officers and $323.87 for soldiers.

Clothing Allowance

This allowance is provided to cater for the uniforms and other needs of the soldiers. Its rates vary from arm to arm and it is admissible to all Marines, Airmen, Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and Soldiers

Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA)

This is an allowance provided to soldiers to meet the high cost of living in a particular area. It is strictly related to the place of duty and is not given if a soldier is serving in an area where the commodities are not very expensive. It is also not issued on the attachment period. A member has to be permanently posted to receive COLA.

The above mentioned allowances are a lucrative aspect of the military life and assist soldier sin meeting their daily requirements in a better way.

GI Bill provides a host of benefits, especially for those who want to pursue education but do no have financial support. So first you need to be eligible for these benefits. For being eligible, there are certain requirements and criteria. These are divided in four basic veteran categories.

In the past, if a soldier wanted to pursue education, he did not have that many opportunities to support that ambition. Now, however, the US government has introduced a new bill named MGIB, which is entirely contrived in order to financially support not only education, but business, technical or vocational courses, job training etc.

Before getting started with the program though, you need certain requirements to fulfill first. If eligible, you can receive up to 36 months of financial payment in order to fund college, or any training program that one intends to take. You may be eligible if you have a high school degree or at least 12 hours of credit in a university. If not, then you will have to meet the following ‘veteran’ criteria first.

First Veteran Category

You must have entered active duty after the date of June 30, 1985. The active service must extend to 3 whole years of continuous service. If you enrolled in Selected Reserve within a year of leaving active duty and served four years, then that will also ensure eligibility.

Second Veteran Category

According to ‘Veteran Category II’, you must have entered active duty before January 1st, 1977. Further, you must have served at least 1 day between 19th October, 1984, and 30th June, 1985.

In addition to the points above, you must also have some GI Bill benefit left from the Vietnam era.

Third Veteran Category

You must have had active duty between the period of 30th September, 1990 and 2nd February, 1991. If that is not the case then involuntary separation should be given on either 30th November, 1993, or after that. If not that, then you must have had involuntary separation done through the Voluntary Separation Initiative program. The final requirement is that you must have had a pay reduction (before separation) of $1200.

Fourth Veteran Category

According to this, you must have had active service from 9th October, 1996 afterwards, in addition to having money remaining in a VEAP account and you must have been elected as MGIB by 9th October, 1997.

Either you must have entered full-time National Guard duty between 1st July, 1985 and 28th November, 1989 and must have been elected MGIB during the period of 9th October, 1996 till 8th July, 1997.

Your MGIB benefits are applicable up to 10 years from the date of discharge from your last active duty. The VA can further extend the 10 year period by the amount of time wasted during injury rehabilitation or foreign government custody. The VA can also extend this period if you re-enter active duty for 90 days or more after becoming applicable for the MGIB program.

Conclusion

So, take a good look at the requirements and figure out if you are eligible for the program or not. If you are, then become the part of the population who have benefited from it and used it to fulfill their dreams. As the fighting face of the American public, you have earned that right to receive such help. Use it to complete your education.

A soldier serves his country with his life and this is appreciated by the insurance companies too. The insurance companies offer the auto insurance policies for the cars owned by the soldiers. These policies are offered with attractive discounts.

However a soldier must also investigate thoroughly about his auto insurance policy so that he knows that what all is covered by it. A few of the queries are discussed below:-

Rental Cars

An insurance policy is obtained for any cars that are owned by the individual. In addition, there are the insurance policies that cover any rental cars being used by the soldiers. Therefore, a soldier must check up as to whether his particular policy covers the rental cars or not. If it covers the rental cars, then to what extent and what all is paid in case of a loss.

Loss Of Use Fee

This is an important t factor to be considered before renting a car. This fee means the financial loss to the rental agency in case the car breaks down while in your use.

It also covers the period of repair at any workshop. A soldier must check and try to get a policy that covers the loss of use fee for rental agencies as well.

Colour Of The Car

A few people have the perception that the insurance policy is affected by the colour of the car too. This, however, is not true. The rates for insurance are independent of the colour. Instead they are affected by the driving skills and experience of the applicant, his credit history, his place of residence and the year and make of the car. In addition, the mileage covered per day is also a factor in determining the insurance rates.

Stolen Cars

The auto insurance must cover the event of stealing of the car because of the growing number of car thefts in the states. A soldier must understand that the make of the car also affects the chances of its being stolen. As per a survey, Honda Accord is the most stolen car followed by the Honda Civic.

Guaranteed Auto Protection Insurance

This is the most important aspect in applying and selecting a car insurance policy. This kind of insurance covers any flaws in your original insurance policy. For example, a brand new car landing into an accident within one month of purchase may not be fully covered by the ordinary auto insurance. However, if you are in possession of GAP insurance, you can get the full value of the car without any devaluation.

A soldier has to be constantly on the move due to his frequent transfers. He is to live in the rented accommodation and in order to protect his belongings he must get renter’s insurance policy. This policy also covers the theft from the cars. A soldier should keep the updated inventory of his property so that it is easy to claim any damages.

Life of a soldier is characterized by frequent postings and transfers. The soldiers are always ready to move at the shortest notice. This move also requires a soldier to shift his belongings from one station to another. He is to live in a rented accommodation and his landlord may have the homeowner insurance but it will not be applicable to the soldier living on rent.

Therefore, a soldier must understand the terms of the renters insurance to make best use of the same.

Renters Insurance

This is the insurance cover extended to a person living in a rented accommodation. The owner of the accommodation has his own homeowner policy and the structure of the house is covered by the insurance company. However, the belongings of the soldier are not covered by this policy and he has to make the arrangements for them separately. The answer is applying for renters insurance.

Obtaining A Renter Insurance

It has become very easy to apply for the renters insurance. A large number of companies are offering such policies and their rates are available on internet.

One can select the insurance plan as per his needs by visiting the company website. In addition, he may call the company agent to get the details of the insurance policy.

Keeping Inventory

A soldier must maintain the inventory of his belongings. This inventory keeps on changing from station to station as new things are bought and old discarded. Therefore, this record must always be kept updated. In addition, the inventory should be kept as photographs for easy reference. These photographs may be kept as a hard copy or the same may be stored in your computer too. However, do not forget to keep a back up of the same on your personal drive.

Property Stolen From Car

Generally people think that the auto insurance also covers the event of theft of property from the car. This is a totally false perception. Only a renter’s policy is the one that covers the loss of property from the car. The car may be located any where in the world. But one must also try to avoid placing valuables in the car as exposing them to undue risk of theft is never justified.

The renter’s insurance policy is the best policy available for soldiers as it gives the complete peace of mind. It covers the damage to your property whether placed inside a rented house or lost from your car.

A good vacation provides respite in tough military life and a soldier should plan it well in time. He can make use of the discounts offered by the airlines and hotels and this will make his trip economical. Planning a cruise during your vacation is also a good option for the soldiers.

The life of a soldier is full of rigors and tough routine. This tiring routine takes its toll on soldier’s life and therefore the soldiers are offered the vacation for R&R. If a soldier plans his leave well, he can enjoy the fruits of cheap and luxurious resorts. This will loosen him up and make him ready for the upcoming challenges in his military life.

Vacation Packages For Soldiers

A soldier has a steady income and it appears quite difficult to manage a dream vacation within his budget. However, the market has gone down and the soldiers can now plan the vacation easily. This fact coupled with the numerous discounts and holiday packages for the soldiers guarantee a time of life without paying heavily.

Cheap Flights

Vacations mean traveling and in order to reach your dream destination, you are likely to travel by air. The air fare may appear high on the outside but a soldier should make maximum use of his military discount on flights. A large number of flight operating companies offer varying rates of discounts for the soldiers.

Therefore, a soldier must plan ahead to get the maximum discount on his flight. He can make use of American Airlines or AirTran to make best use of the discounts.

Cheaper Hotel

A soldier also gets substantial discount on hotel stay. So once you are planning a vacation, you must check out the hotels at your destination and compare the discounts offered by them.

It is best to maintain a list of the hotels and keep on updating it by consulting with your colleagues. This little effort can help you save huge amounts on account of the hotel stays. In addition, the hotels offer the services of spa and state rooms at no additional charges.

Easy Cruise Trips

Cruising across the sea has its own pleasures and a soldier must incorporate this adventure into his vacation plan. Although, the rates of cruising trips have risen owing to the fuel prices, yet a soldier can plan the cruise with relatively lower budget too. The offers of discounts on rooms and other facilities make this trip economical as well as memorable.

A well planned vacation is the most memorable and exciting feature of a soldier’s life. It is also an economical package if one uses the discounts offered to soldiers.

A soldier can get the benefit of no credit loans as these are specifically offered for the persons in service. Such loans are independent of the credit score and can be obtained with very easy processing. The loans are available in small amounts and the amount of the loan can be adjusted as per the financial stability of applicant.

A soldier has to live within the means of his salary and therefore, he should make his budget carefully. In the times of need, he can always apply for the loan. The biggest advantage for a soldier remains the fact that the lending companies have certain concessions for them. A soldier with the poor credit history is also eligible for a loan.

No Credit Loans For Soldiers

A soldier can apply for the loans even if his borrowing history is poor. The loans for the soldiers are not affected by the credit scores. The negative situations that arise due to poor credentials and inability to secure a loan are not applicable to the soldiers. The no credit loans are specifically designed for the soldiers and they can get a loan without giving out their credit history at time of application. However, they are to follow the detailed outline as per the agreement with the lending agency.

Fast Cash For Soldiers

The no credit loans are the best means for obtaining fast cash for the soldiers. The applicant can apply for these loans online and the easy and quick processing makes it the best choice in need of urgency.

Cash Limits

The no credit loans do not require the credit history and are fast to obtain but they have a limited amount to be given to soldiers. Normally the amount ranges from 500 to a thousand dollars.

But this limit is for one purpose of loans. If you are applying for a number of projects, you can enjoy the same limit for each of the projects.

Characteristics Of No Credit Loans

A few of the salient of the no credit loans are:-

1. No need to give out your credit history

2. Higher rate of interest on loans.

3. Easy and speedy processing

4. Shorter time duration to make the payments back to lending company.

5. Offered only to the soldiers.

6. The loan amount is fixed as per the rank structure and ability to pay back in time. If you have a sound financial standing, you can get more amount as loan.

7. The repayment is done automatically from the pay check of the soldiers.

8. These no credit loans also have a cancellation period after approval. A soldier can get his loan cancelled within 15 days of its approval.

9. After the loan is approved, you can get the amount directly in your account within 24 hours.

Caution To Soldiers Regarding Loan

A soldier must be mindful of the high interest rates for the no credit loans. So if he does not pay the installments on time, the loan amount is going to shoot up very quickly.

Veteran benefits cover many states in the US, but unfortunately not all of them. A good news reached our years about four years ago when veteran benefits program also reached New Jersey, providing new opportunities to the vets residing in those areas. Read on for further details.

Those of you who reside in New Jersey got good news from the government a few years ago. From 2007, military veterans and their spouses living in that area finally received eligibility to receive the kind of support available from various troop support groups scattered across the country.

The credit goes to the GI Go Fund, which is a group that tries to smoothly re-introduce the veterans to non-military life, after a conflict.

Beginnings

So, the GI Go Fund introduced veteran support by joining forces with Newark in hosting it’s first ever Veterans and Military Job Fair. The first job fair went off on March 21st , 2007 , at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Nearly 40 government and private employers participated in the event, with the likes of FBI, the Secret Service, Coca Cola, US Marshals, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey etc. The GI Go Fund group initially expected as many as 300 potential employees to participate in the event.

The Deputy’s Word

According to the Deputy Director of GI Go Fund, Alexander E. Manis, “We decided to host this job fair in response to the growing number of unemployed veterans reaching out to our organization for assistance in finding jobs”.

Manis was of the opinion that the job fair should simply be much more than what a normal job fair offers. “We are working with government agencies and other nonprofit organizations in providing outreach to our veterans and their families”, said Manis, around the time of it’s launch.

Event Diversity

So, true to their words, the authorities also planned to offer other activities, such as classes on foreclosure prevention, Veterans Affairs home loans, and other such help from organizations like the Small Business Administration and Helmets to Hardhats, both of which work to provide employment to veterans.

Other organizations which were contacted to hold such lessons included the VA department, the Library for the Blind and Handicapped, and the New Jersey Department of Military and Veteran affairs.

“Computer terminals will also be available with access to USAjobs.gov Web site so veterans and their spouses can learn about and apply for government employment,” Manis said, at the time of it’s beginning.

“As the growing unemployment rate among veterans is not localized in New Jersey, but is found throughout the country, we all should be encouraged to do something for our veterans,” Manis said. “Although these are tough economic times, there are employers that are hiring and looking for the values and dedication to hard work that veterans have.”

Current perspective

The GI Go Fund Job Fair now has grown up to quite a size. As of the GI Go Fund’s 4th annual job fair, almost 500 veterans attended the event. The number of employers has also gone up to 70. From this year, the new Federal Vow to Hire Heroes Act provides a new kind of business incentive to hire military veterans as the new act provides a tax credit of up to $9,600 to such employers.

“Those people who fought for freedom should not be burdened by the shackles of unemployment. If you are qualified to serve in the military, you are qualified to work in the private sector. Today I am proud to do the right things for those who did the right things for us” said Cory Booker, the mayor of Newark”.

It is hard for military personnel to pursue higher education. There are many reasons for it, but the main one is the lack of finance. Military Pay simply isn’t enough to fund one’s way through college. What you may not know, however, is that military offers many scholarships for ambitious military people. Read the article to find out.

In the past, an American military man has always had trouble pursuing higher education. The pay isn’t nearly enough for one to pay off all the college expenditure. So, what must one do then, to fulfill his/her dream?

G.I Bill and it’s constituents

Cue the G.I Bill, and all the education worries fly away, at least partially. What it does is pay off most, if not all, of your education expenditures. On October 30, 2000, the American Senate introduced an amendment and made an addition to it in the form of Tuition Assistance Top-Up. That may have been all that was needed for solidifying a tuition-free college experience.

With Top-Up assistance, one can be paid 100% of the full college expense, up to a limit set by the Department of Defense. If one’s service branch does not provide 100% of the cost, then this program can be used to fill up the balance.

Eligibility

In order to invoke the G.I Bill though, one first has to be eligible for the TA (Tuition Assistance) program of the G.I Bill. What it entails is that you first have to be certified by a military branch. You must be an MGIB – Active Duty participant and must have served at least 2 full years on active duty.

Top-Up program offers up to 36 months of educational payments, and you can use them in any order that you deem fit. You can either use it to supplement your full-time education or use it to fund a few , isolated courses at best. For example, you can use it to pay off a couple of your courses. That way you can save up your TA benefit for later, and use it full-blast for the rest of your education.

Branch Benefits

Now, even if GI Bill doesn’t meet your needs, then you should know that the whichever military branch that you belong to, Air Force, Navy or Land Forces, has its own separate funding programs in addition to the MGIB program. You can utilize them as well as the TA and Top-Up program.

Of Course, the money provided by each of the branches differs. The Army offers as much as $70000, while the Marine fund offers only about $30000. Note that all these funds are provided only on merit. So, you have to be extra-sharp than everybody else in order to secure them. Also, you will have to agree to committing 6 years of service in the branch that you are trying to obtain the funding in.

Additional Programs

Another program that one might be interested in is the Army College Fund (ACF), which is an enlistment incentive contrived in order to make critical Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) more attractive for the qualified soldiers. The ACF supplements all the other basic funding programs and can award up to $50,000 in education benefits if you’re engaged in critical operations.

Conclusion

In the end, as a conclusion, for a military person, it is very true that one has many options. And through these options, his/her college education can be funded easily. If the thirst to pursue knowledge is enough and apparent, it is not hard to locate a program that suits ones needs.

There are many, many benefits granted by the GI Bill. Do you know about all of them? That’s what we thought. We don’t know about all of them either. But we can show you some of them and how you can use them. Read on.

GI Bill is not just a college scholarship. In fact, it covers all kinds of educational courses. It has support attached to it which brings your role and participation towards extensive and additional training in different areas.

For example, your GI program can fund vocational certification training programs at Non-College Degree institutions.

A list of such certifications follows.

Type of Courses available through GI BIll

HVAC Certification

Truck Driving

EMT Certification

The GI Bill also provides support for Apprenticeship training

Union Plumber

Hotel Management

Firefighter

Or The GI Bill can provide support for Flight Training

Rotary Wing Qualification

B747-400 Qualification

Dual Qualification

Other Types

The GI Bill also covers Distance, Internet or Correspondence training. In these methods, you receive lessons in the mail, and complete the training that way in a certain amount of time. The GI Bill can also provide assistance for achievement tests, such as SAT, GMAT, LSAT, CLEP etc

Work-Study Programs

The best benefit of the GI Bill, however, is that it allows you to work and study both at the same time. This eliminates the disadvantage of using GI Bill to study, which is that you take a break from the job. Through work-study programs, one can accommodate for that. Of Course, a number of requirements need to be fulfilled in order to be eligible for that.

One is selected after the relevant department considers the major factor in making this decision, which are :

A possible disability

Ability of the student to complete his/her work-study program before the GI Bill runs out

Job availability within the reach of the student

More preference is given to those who have service-related injuries and disabilities. However, that doesn’t mean that you should go on and have your leg broken or something. You just have to keep this clause in mind and then settle your expectations.

Co-op training support is also available through GI Bill. That way, you can attend school and work both at the same time. In fact, some institutions partner with the job providers in order to synchronize and accommodate one’s job and education at the same time.

Entrepreneurial opportunities

But that’s just about Education. GI Bill also provides funding for enterprising military persons. If you are interested in opening a business, then the military can provide funding as well as the counseling by providing contacts to qualified military servicemen who will guide you in starting a business.

A concern regarding the use of GI Bill is that one’s business plan will first have to be judged if it is good enough or not. So, the grant of GI funding mainly depends on how creative you are in your business planning. Least of all, one has to be sharper than the other, and stand out from the rest in order to be accepted for the program.

Military education also comes into play here. Some find it difficult to validate the veterans on their military education and their entrepreneurial flair. There is no standardized way to measure this, and this is one of the main concerns regarding GI Bill.

Conclusion

So, to conclude, the GI Bill provides a number of benefits for the veterans. Make sure you don’t miss out on them.

Soldiers face many dangers on the job, which is why governments around the world give them material compensations. US government introduced a new G.I Bill that gave military men the funding to get a good education. Colleges, however, have some hesitancy in taking in the veterans. What might be the reason for it?

In America and outside, our soldiers have risked their lives for us whenever the need has risen. They have routinely faced the violence that our enemy had prepared for us, so that we, the public, won’t have to. And they did it simply because they loved their nation. They didn’t have any vested interests in it, nor did they like the traumatic fighting while protecting their country.

They were selfless people who did the dirty job for the other’s benefits. And they have the nation’s gratitude.

Hazard Benefit : The new G.I bill

In a government’s eye, the most effective way to show gratitude for military men and women is through a good compensation package. This is how nations around the world keep their soldiers happy. Following that thought, the American Government has also made several concessions for our soldiers in recent times as well. Recently, they launched a new G.I Bill, which makes it possible for military personnel to get further education while receiving full college funding, which takes care of their academic expenditures.

In our case, Army men now have an opportunity to get the college education they have been dreaming about, which was quite late in arriving apparently seeing as only in the first month of the introduction of that bill, nearly half a million military veterans enrolled in colleges. Perhaps the only issue before was the lack of a monetary package to compensate for their study.

Colleges react to the Bill

The content of the G.I bill seems great, but after reading through it comes the question: Is military experience applicable to a college education? Apparently, some colleges in US say no, through their actions if not with mouths. Colleges have made it harder for military men to be able to transfer credits if they don’t have a ‘normal’ educational background.

For example, take the issue of credits. Of 732 schools in US, 1 in 5 doesn’t accept credits from completed military education. Many reject even the basic army training. The implication of this is that a college-aged military man/woman will have to continue with education from a level lower to the person’s established mental capability and knowledge. This also means that he/she will also have an excess delay in joining the workforce before being done with education.

Reasons for the behavior

Now, what is the reason for all this? Why are many of the colleges so distrustful of a military background? An explanation is that colleges think academic learning is simply different from a hands-on military experience. According to them, they rate only ‘academic’ learning backed by degrees rather than ‘experiential’ (via experience) learning unsupported by physical documents, no matter how superior the latter might be to the former.

But then again, colleges have their own reputations to look after. Unfortunately, colleges cater to the academic world where only the best academic degrees determine success. As such, they only like to attract the students who look the best on paper, thus looking more likely to boost their success credentials with. As private bodies of education, they have every right to do that. It just has an unfortunate side-effect of leaving military men in the lurch.

Conclusion

In any case, even if some might discredit your military credentials, there are many that won’t. You just have to look for the right colleges. So, don’t be disheartened by what you read out there on the college websites. Chances are that you will find a college that will accommodate your military learning.
