Sushi and Tea – A perfect pair! Giveaway!

I am a tried and true lover of Tea, always have been!

Perhaps it’s because Irish culture dictates you make a cup of Tea for just about every occasion. Feeling happy? Make Tea! Sad? So I think I can safely say I’m a pretty good judge of tea – having had about a million cups in my lifetime! And I am not kidding when I tell you I have found my hands down FAVORITE…

Lipton Tea Super fruit – White Mangosteen with Peach

Lipton has 3 Super fruit flavors and I liked them all, but White mangosteen Peach with a little added honey in it is… just DIVINE! I paired it with sushi below, because it has a very delicate, lightly sweet taste and I think that really goes well with the spicy tuna & salty flavor of Soy Sauce.

Here is what you will need for Spicy Tuna Sushi Rolls:

Ingredients:

6 cups prepared sushi rice
4 sheets nori (dried seaweed)
1 Tbsp white sesame seeds (black would work in a pinch)
1/2 lb sushi/sashimi grade tuna (Ask seafood monger if your not sure)
1 avocado
1 Tbsp mayonnaise
1/2 tsp ichimi-togarashi (ground dried red chili pepper) *adjust the amount to your preference
Wasabi, lemon wedge, and pickled ginger for garnish (optional)
Soy Sauce

Directions:

Chop sashimi/sushi grade tuna into small pieces and mix with mayonnaise and dried red chili pepper. Put a nori sheet on top of a bamboo mat. Spread a quarter portion of your sushi rice on top of the nori sheet. Sprinkle sesame seed on top of the sushi rice. And place a quarter portion of tuna mixture lengthwise on the rice. Put fresh chopped avocado beside Tuna. Roll up the bamboo mat, pressing forward to shape the sushi into a cylinder. Press the bamboo mat firmly and remove it from the sushi. Make more rolls. Cut the rolled sushi into bite-sized pieces. Soy Sauce to taste

Makes 4 rolls

DFW Gems: Munson – Cox Photography!

This winter I stumbled upon a Groupon for a local photography studio – Munson-Cox. I’d seen some of their work before, and had always been impressed so I snatched up the coupon as soon as I saw it! I wanted to share my experience at this studio because it was just SO different than any other experience at a photography studio our family has had.

From the moment I made our appointment I felt really taken care of, and was given really thoughtful advice on what would be good for my daughter to wear. The studio is in North Arlington, very close to Cowboy Stadium.

-When we arrived at their building my daughter had a whole photo studio to herself. Unlike other places we’ve gone their was no rushing us, and no other people walking around distracting. That is a big deal for a 3 year old that is already a bundle of energy! Before the shoot got started we were led to a small dressing room for my daughter to change. It was stocked with hairspray, bobby pins, lint brush – anything you might need last minute to look spiffy! And what was hanging on my daughters door? A star with her name on it. Cute touch!

-The photographer we had Chris, worked so sweetly and patiently with my 3 year old. Never getting upset or seeming put out by her excited running and jumping around. Below is a short clip I took of him working with her.

When we made an appointment to come back and look at the photos (unlike other places, you do need to wait to view the pictures) we were over the moon. I would have loved to buy all of them! They were put together into a music video of sorts to allow us to see them blown up on a very large screen. It really helped to see them all before going through them individually with Samantha. There was absolutely NO pressure to buy anything more than we were comfortable with. I really appreciated that, and the patience to let me look through each one slowly and methodically!

I will say that the prices at this studio are definitely on the higher side. And while I’d love to go to them every year, that’s just not in our budget. But for special occasions or to capture different phases of childhood- these photos are truly heirloom quality. They came beautifully boxed- and just perfect for gifts!

I’m not sure that some DFW residents know about this gem in Arlington. Its truly a personalized photo experience, and I totally recommend it! Check this out for more of DFW’s best Resources!

How to make a Doll Couch and Chair! Cheaply and EASILY!

This Christmas my daughter inherited my childhood dollhouse! And if you are a long time reader, you have heard about this ongoing project to decorate the dollhouse, make furniture and pretend doll food for it! This week I figured out a way to make a wooden doll couch and chair for it – without cutting wood or using nails! I’m no carpenter, but this is super easy using wood you can find already cut in your local Home Depot or any hardware store!

Below you will find the steps I used to quickly and easily make this couch and chair for my daughters 12 inch dolls (Barbie, Disney Princess dolls etc). FYI – the couch shown here could easily be used as a chair, for a larger sized American Girl Doll!

~How to make a Wooden Doll Couch & Chair~

(This is how the furniture looks done)

STEP 1: You need to find the “trim and casing” aisle of the hardware store it will look like this…

-Notice how all of these would pieces are already cut? Some even painted for you? It’s awesome.

STEP 2- For the couch I bought (2) Small Base Blocks for the arms at $2.26 each. And (2) longer Casing Base Blocks for the seat and back of the couch at $3.38 each. I also purchased Liquid nails. For the chair you see above, I used 4 identical sized Rosette Casing Blocks at $1.06 each!

STEP 3- Arrange your blocks in front of you like this…

STEP 4- Stand up the blocks in place and you will see your couch! Now you just need to glue!

STEP 5- I wanted my seat to be slightly off the ground so I glued it into the middle of the side arm pieces. I waited for the liquid nails to dry completely on one side before turning it over to the next side to glue.

STEP 6- Just paint and decorate your furniture anyway you choose! I painted it and then made some little cushions out of packing foam and a pajama my daughter had grown out of! Have fun!
