My New Blog: Permanent Weekend

Hey guys! So I have some exciting news, the new blogging space that I had mentioned a few posts back is now ready for public consumption. It's called Permanent Weekend and it is a blog written by Grant and myself.

I think it's a little evident that the personal style blogging thing has worn a bit thin for me. As much as I do like to share and chronicle my outfits, I feel like I have grown out of that blogging niche for a variety of reasons. Foremost, for me, fashion and personal blogging have changed A LOT since I started and what used to be a fun way to check out people's personal style and potentially get inspired by their outfits has morphed into a weird space where almost every outfit has been sponsored or subsidized by a brand or posts are really masked as advertisements for company X. Now I don't begrudge people for making money off of partnerships or advertising but more often than not there isn't a balance between the authentic and original versus what has been sponsored and paid for.

So, with that said, you might be wondering what this "Permanent Weekend" business is. Well, It's a space for posts about travel, for discovering off the beaten path spots around Southern California and beyond (two words: Huell Howser).

For sharing work and news from our amazing photographer and artist friends. New 'zines, interesting gallery shows and collaborations--that sort of stuff will be posted there.

More posts on all things related to thrift stores (uh because we're obsessed): general tips, observations, gripes, our finds, the occasional DIY...

A space to nerd out on LA/SoCal history. I personally spend a lot of time looking through library photo databases for old photos of the area as well as reading through blog posts from various historical society web pages. I'm excited to finally be able to post my finds.

And since I'm now realizing that I don't have the time to write a paragraph for every single topic that we want to cover, in a nutshell there WILL be posts on: 90s nostalgia, interviews with people who we think are interesting, music, skateboarding, pop culture, fashion, and more.

Anyway, it's a departure from this blogging space but one that I'm excited about. I do plan on posting here still, probably with the same frequency that I've been maintaining, but the majority of my posts, musings, and creative efforts will now live on Permanent Weekend.

Thanks for keeping up with this blog of mine. I swear this isn't a farewell post (although it's starting to sound like one) but I am grateful to those of you have taken the time to read and look at what I've posted here throughout the years. I've always been thankful for the encouragement as well as shocked and humbled to find out that people know me from this blog. Whodathunkit. Anyway, thank you.

Don't think I've ever met a jumpsuit I didn't like. It's one of the trends that I support and 100% indulge in. I just think they're so comfortable and all of the different pockets (at least this one has four pockets on the front) are so handy. Although, I will admit sometimes I'll catch my reflection in a window and the silhouette is a little questionable (to say the least) but I guess that's where layering with a long jacket comes into play ;-) Happy Tuesday night!

Paris Photo Diary Part 1

Oh yeah, remember when I went to Paris earlier this year? You don't? Well, I don't blame you since my upkeep with this "blogging" business has been laughable as of late.

Anyway, I'm here right now to share part of the photos that I took on our trip. It rained for the majority of our time in Paris (we spent a full week in the city) which, I'm not gonna lie, sucked. Although the rain didn't truly stop us from seeing and doing all the things we wanted to see. I think if anything it made us "turn in early" most evenings where if it were dry we'd probably be out doing much more walking and exploring at night.

I think I took fifty photos of all the different ornate doors I saw in Paris.

Not pictured: my cup of hot chocolate from Paul's that I would buy at every opportunity. Yes, I know Paul's is a chain and for all I know is probably on par with Panera in the US. I don't care! The hot chocolate is so good.

We stayed at an amazing little flat in Le Marais through Air BNB which means that Notre Dame was one of our nearest landmarks that we could easily walk to.

We checked out a ton of different "off the beaten path" (read: not the Louvre) museums, the musee de carnavalet was highly recommended (and free!). It definitely didn't disappoint. The museum is one dedicated to the history of Paris from ancient times and beyond.

Outrageous art deco tile work?? Sign me up.

Last time we went to Paris we didn't get to stroll the Champs Elysees so I requested that get to do that. If anything it was nice to walk the street for the historic value as I really didn't care about any of the modern shops that now line the boulevard. Also, in my mind I kept flashing back to the entire "Paris Holds The Key To Your Heart" song and dance number from Anastasia which was fine by me.

A visit to the Pompidou is always a must.

A cool Martial Raysse exhibit was there....

BUT sorry to say, no exhibit could hold a candle the Henri Cartier-Bresson photography exhibition! Truly inspiring and amazing, especially if you're a photography lover. Grant got a huge kick out of it and I think we can both agree that it was one of our favorite things we experienced on our trip.

No joke, this crepe stand (the best in Paris as far as I can tell) was down the alley from our flat so yeah, we ate there a lot. Add to this, L'As du Fallafel was even CLOSER to where we were staying (literally 15 steps away) and ughhh amazing, inexpensive, and all together just ridiculously tasty and good. I mean, Lenny Kravitz would never steer you wrong, right?

If you follow me on Instagram then you definitely know these photos are old because I done chopped my hair off over the weekend! I was telling my friend who cut it that I was feeling like my hair was toeing the line of being in"horse lady" territory. You know those older women who have really, really long hair? Well to me (and Grant, we came up with this observation together) those women with really long hair look like they would be super into horses and wear mystical horse t-shirts and collect horse figurines. I'm probably not making any sense. Anyway, it's a look that I want to avoid. So yes, very happy to have shorter hair again...

Now onto the photos in this post. These were taken while Grant and I went on a short little jaunt up to Santa Barbara for my birthday last month. Namely I wanted to go to Santa Barbara for the food! We went back to Sama Sama Kitchen, a really tasty Indonesian restaurant and more importantly, we visited McConnell's Ice Cream! Ever since Haagan Dazs rudely discontinued (I can't find it anywhere anymore) their salted caramel truffle ice cream (aka my favorite ice cream flavor) a few months ago I've been at a loss. Other brands that have a "salted caramel" flavor more often than not get it totally wrong and make something that tastes like a Werther's Original. Thankfully, Grant randomly brought this ice cream home one night and we've been all about it ever since. The only downside is that a pint is $8 and it lasts exactly 10 minutes split between the both of us. Sigh.

Besides eating good, we were able to do a bit of exploring and stumbled upon this little park in a random neighborhood. Cactus, bougainvillea, AND a view of the ocean?? Santa Barbara, you're not too shabby ;-) Hope to be back again soon!

Hey friends! Remember me? Sorry for the silence on the blog front. Excuses are kind of lame but I will say that I've been working on a different, yet to be revealed, blogging project that is separate from this space. Hoping to share it with you all soon :) In the meantime, here's a good ol' fashioned outfit post. I should have snatched these pants up while they were in Grant's shop but alas, they've sold since I've taken these photos. Definitely feeling this more relaxed fit, especially with the absurd heat that's been plaguing Southern California. I wore skinny jeans today, let me tell you--BIG MISTAKE. So sweaty. So not okay. ;-(

Madrid Travel Diary

Amazing risotto with saffron and chorizo--so good!

While researching what to do in Madrid I came across La Gatoteca aka a cat cafe! I had heard about cat cafes in Tokyo but didn't think they existed anywhere else. Seeing as both Grant and I are obsessed with cats, visiting was a given. The Gatoteca is really more of a nice shelter with Ikea furniture and a small, self-service coffee and tea station than an honest to goodness cafe. You pay a small entree fee which goes to the care of the shelter cats in order to spend about an hour playing with the animals. DEFINITELY worth it. The cats were all very sweet and we still to this day bring up some of the cats we met that day (yeah, not exaggerating).

We strolled through Retiro park often while on our trip. The park was a nice little getaway from the heat and hustle and bustle of Madrid.

Terrible quality phone pic but GEEZ was the food in Madrid amazing! Definitely our favorite culinary destination out of all the places we visited. We're still dreaming of all the tapas we ate on the daily. We loved the casualness and slower pace of tapas, ordering food wasn't as stressful as in other countries since I still remembered some of the Spanish that I had learned in high school (whew!) and was able to read and menus more confidently as well as talk with the restaurant staff. Pictured: pan con tamate, jamon iberico, manchego, and sangria of course!

So much color and festiveness in the streets! We lucked out and visited during Fiesta de San Isidro. San Isidro is Madrid's Patron Saint so there were lots of parades, fireworks, singing, and dancing in the streets the whole time we were there.

We celebrated our 6 year anniversary while we were in Spain and as a special treat we visited a hammam for some extra relaxation. The hammam was in an excavated wine cellar below the city streets and it was like a whole new world. There were different temperature pools to soak in, a sauna, and a tea tasting room. Bliss!

Stunning ceilings at el catedral de la Almudena. This was a random visit on our last afternoon, so glad we made the time to stop by.

Chocolateria San Gines! I think this is the oldest restaurant in Madrid and it has a storied, glamorous history of serving churros con chocolate to movie stars, dignitaries, and various persons of interest. This place was so good we had breakfast here twice!

We Meet Again, Palm Springs

Hello! Wanted to drop in and share a few snaps from mine and Grant's time in Palm Springs. I've said it once and I'll say it again, Palm Springs is our favorite Southern California getaway. Luckily, it wasn't too unbearably hot while we were there (just a mere 100 degrees--not bad) so we were able to do a reasonable amount of exploring in the daylight hours while popping into the requisite air conditioned thrift store to keep cool. Sweating behind the knees (anyone? anyone?) is not a good look.

Quinta Da Regalaira Travel Diary

Here it is! Photos from our day trip to Sintra to check out the Quinta Da Regaleira. To be honest, we could have spent a few days just exploring the town of Sintra alone (the whole town is pretty much a UNESCO World Heritage Site)--there is SO much to see and do. Don't get me wrong, we loved Lisbon but Sintra is straight out of a fairy tale.

Getting to Sintra is pretty easy, you take a train (about a half hour ride) and then hop on a bus to see the specific sight you want to see. I guess you could walk to the different sights but the town is really hilly and a few of the places are legitimately on top of a mountain. No thank you.

Anyway, when I was planning our trip and googling "best day trips outside of Lisbon" seeing the Quinta Da Regaleira in Sintra was highly recommended and I can definitely see why. The QDR (too lazy) is an estate that was built in the early 1900s by a guy who was super into things like Free Masonry, the mysteries of the natural world, Knights Templar stuff with a dash of iluminati mixed in for good measure. Wild stuff, right?

Okay so this was a really cool feature. You walk into the doorway and are greeted by a pond and a pitch black tunnel leading to who knows where. As you descend further and further into the darkness the air gets cooler, the ground and tunnel walls are slippery with water, water drips overhead onto you, and as you start to wonder how long this tunnel go on for--BAM! A beam of light shines onto the ground and you realize you're in the most incredible Game of Thrones-esque tower with a spiral staircase chiseled into the rock beckoning you to climb to the top.

Lisbon Photo Diary

I'm back with another installment of my European photo diary. This time (as promised) I'm sharing a few photos I took in Lisbon. Please excuse the photo quality, a bunch of shots were taken with my phone!

Ahh...beautiful Lisbon!

Beautiful tiled building as far as the eye can see! It was hard not to take a picture of every different azulejo tile design I came across.

A pastel de nata was pretty much the #1 must try dessert that I came across while doing my research on what sort of food things to try in Lisbon. There are tons of little bakeries that sell this sweet but Pasteis de Belem is supposed to be THE best. So of course we had to find this place. Luckily, there are lots of sights in the little district of Belem, but even if there weren't I think making the trek to check out this bakery would have been worth it. These tarts are rich with a creamy, eggy custard filling atop a flaky pastry shell. They are not too sweet (which we loved) and I liked mine with an extra sprinkling of cinnamon on top.

The Torre de Belem, a prime example of Manueline architecture. It was blazing hot this day and I wanted nothing more than to walk into that water...

Exploring the Alfama, the oldest part of Lisbon.

I had read about the Alfama neighborhood and made sure to make it a priority to check out. This neighborhood is no joke. It really is a labyrinth of super old, extremely narrow, but entirely picturesque streets and buildings. Lisbon was totaled in 1755 after an apocalyptic earthquake/ tsunami/ fire trifecta totally destroyed most of the city. The Alfama district was spared.

We had no real agenda when we were checking out the neighborhood (and I was feeling too lazy to suggest making the hike to the Sao Jorge castle) so imagine our delight when we turned a corner and came face to face with a gorgeous view of the water.

Here is a takeaway point: Lisbon is HILLY. We stayed in between the Bairro Alta and Baixa neighborhoods and found ourselves climbing stairs upon stairs upon stairs. Locals must have really great legs.

Anarchy in the streets

We stumbled upon a few skateboards on our night time walks. Lisbon is almost all cobblestone streets (yay) which makes skateboarding inconceivable. We found these guys skating some of the only smooth flat ground we had seen in the entire city. This spot is right in front of the museum of archeology. After watching for a bit Grant made friends with the locals and joined the festivities.

We were determined to go to the beach so off we went to Carcavelos. Although it was sunny and hot the water was freezing so we laid out and enjoyed the sun.

I miss skinny European coke cans! Even the shade of red is better.

All in all, we loved Lisbon! It was definitely one of the most romantic cities I have ever been to. I had little knowledge of what Lisbon/ Portugal would be like besides what friends had told me who had been previously and of course the parts in Love Actually when Colin Firth goes to Portugal to propose to his housekeeper. Let's see, the whole Romance of decay vibe was STRONG here. Many buildings were a bit faded in their glory with crumbling tile facades and graffiti tagged walls but that just added to their charm, in my opinion. Also, we appreciated how inexpensive the city was (a welcomed respite from the prices of London--GEEZ). I would love to visit again. Maybe hit up the Algarve next time too?

London Photo Diary

Obligatory telephone booth photo, especially since I had Grant's red beanie on and my Vans

We ate breakfast almost every day at Bloomsbury Coffee House. Definitely a fan of English breakfasts. Beans on toast = revelation. Who knew?! Also, best eggs I've ever had in my life. Normally, eggs kind of freak me out. I eat them because I know they are good for me, but the texture creeps me out if I think about it too much. These eggs were perfectly cooked and I find myself craving them now that I'm at home.

Love this painting by Meredith Frampton, reminds me of Atonement or something.

Something I really miss here in the US is tea culture. Popping in somewhere for a scone and a cup of tea is so up my alley. I feel like I made Grant stop for tea and a scone/ piece of cake every day. A secret fantasy of mine is opening up a tea house/ ice cream parlor. All of the "afternoon tea" tea houses I've ever been to (and trust me, I've been to practically all of them in the LA/OC area) are pretty meh or crazy expensive--someone needs to make a legit place!

Ducked under an awning while it rained for a few minutes. Can I just say that the rain is INSANE. Although, as someone who lives in a part of the US that's almost always experiencing some sort of drought, perhaps any sort of rain is "unnatural" to me. I saw it go from sunny/ borderline hot to torrential downpour/ rain apocalypse and then back again in the span of like 5 minutes. AND to top it all of, I saw so many gals wearing sandals and super cute sundresses. I assumed they were locals and this weather was business as usual but if I lived here I'd probably just give up on fashion and wear rain jacket jumpsuit or something.

Although the rain did bring with it the most majestic rainbow I've seen in a while, over the Tower Bridge no less

People tell me these are lilacs which brings to mind a line from one of my all time favorite musicals My Fair Lady, "are there lilac trees in the heart of town? Can you hear a lark in any other part of town? Does enchantment pour out of every door? No it's just on the street where you live."

Grant and I are avid Stuff You Should Know podcast listeners and prior to visiting the British Museum, we had listened to a podcast on Crystal Skulls (newsflash - they are as cool as they sound). We went to the British museum and looked through the collection and after we had left we vaguely remembered that a crystal skull was displayed in a museum somewhere in Europe. We looked it up and, lo and behold a crystal skull was at the British Museum!! WHAT?! So we made sure to go back before we left to seek out the skull. Well, we found it and it was one of the old timey fake ones. Still cool but we want to look into the crystalline depths of one of the OG crystal skulls that purportedly have crazy powers (seeings visions and hearing disembodied voices? Sounds alright).

Never met a cabinet of curiosities that I didn't like.

Ahh, Regent's Park. So pretty,

Grant found out about the Punch & Judy Festival that was happening while we were in town so we checked it out. So glad we did because it turned out to be one of the highlites of our trip! I had never seen a Punch & Judy show before so didn't really know what to expect but it was SO cute. Granted, the Punch & Judy puppets are kind of creepy looking but the little show is so funny and I was laughing along with all of the little kids (and parents!) who were at this festival.

A brass band played at the festival and it was as charming as it seems in this photo. Just everyone's grandpa in a brass band? How sweet is that??

Before I barrage you with all my photos from Europe (I took a little over 2000...), here's an outfit from right before we left. I think my favorite part of a pair of overalls is the bib pocket. I put everything in that front bib (phone, keys, sunglasses), I kind of wish there were more tops that had these pockets--they're so handy (or hands free??). Also, I took the above Converse on our trip and now they are literally 50 shades of grey, might have to dip em in Oxyclean...

Hello! Just popping in real quick to share an outfit from a few weeks ago. I've hopped on the 501 bandwagon. I feel like I can only wear these pants with long shirts because I'm still unconvinced about what the high waist is doing for ~my figure~. BUT I do like the more relaxed leg, it's a nice change from skinny.

Anywho, got a lot of quality HBO to catch up on right now (Game Of Thrones, Veep, & Silicon Valley) so off I go!

I was thinking about pet peeves the other day, I think they're fascinating and I love hearing what grinds other people's gears. I'll let you in on one of my biggest pet peeves: being called ma'm. MA'M?!! Oh no, I think you mean miss, random grocery store employee. I think it's also the tone in which people say ma'm. I feel like it's almost always uttered with a hint of impatience or annoyance. When someone does refers to me as miss I inwardly nod my head in tacit approval, with a slight smile on my face, "yeah, that's right, I'm a miss". Being called ma'm is like the equivalent of someone telling you, "you look tired today" when you feel the opposite of tired and are actually quite wide awake, thanks. It's a subtle diss! Only when I'm married with a ring on my hitching finger OR pushing a kid in a stroller OR am a woman of a certain age will being called ma'm fly in my book.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. Anyone else feel me on this or is it just my weird hangup?

Hi hello! Spring is here (not like there ever really was a winter in California but whatever) which means the bougainvillea is popping off! Nothing says California in the spring like bright pink bougainvillea and the smell of orange blossoms and jasmine in the air. It's the best!

Just realized that I never mentioned this: Grant and I are going to Europe in May! YEAH! We've been saving our pennies and we finally have enough for trip. We're headed to London, Paris, Madrid and Lisbon. I've been scouring websites/ Trip Advisor/ random travel blogs for fun things to do, both of the super touristy variety and off the beaten path. If you're reading this and have a recommendation, anything from a cafe to check out or a cool, scenic spot to gaze upon PLEASE holler at me ;-)

The Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942

Can't believe I'm only getting around to posting these photos now! A few weeks ago Grant and I checked out The Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942 over in San Pedro. In a nutshell, it was amazing!! Probably the coolest and most interesting event I've been to in a long time.

You're probably wondering what it is. Well, the event is a reenactment of "The Battles of Los Angeles". Pretty much right after Pearl Harbor tensions were super high in LA because people thought for sure the city would be attacked next. On the night of February 24, 1942 some sketchy lights in the sky were spotted over San Pedro and Fort Macarthur held it down by firing at whatever what was in the air thereby defending LA. What makes the event so interesting is that it was never confirmed whether or not those lights belonged to Japanese war planes or what. The whole event was dismissed as a "false alarm" which has fueled conspiracy theories ever since. The biggest conspiracy theory of them all being that the lights belonged to UFOs. UFOS!!? Obviously we had to go!

Usually I think historic reenactments are sort of cheesy. Not this one. This event will put all historic reenactment to shame. You walk up to the fort and it feels like you are literally stepping into a portal that takes you straight to 1942. Of the era military vehicles, tents, tanks, munitions--you name it, it's there. All the volunteers are dressed up in period clothing, and I think the event even hires extras to walk around in 1940s costume to add to the ambiance (where can I sign up?). A big band plays through the night and as we were walking up swing dancing lessons were being given to those who wanted to jitterbug the night away. Also, most everyone who went dressed up which also adds to the fun!

Anyway, I don't want to give away too much (the famous battle gets re-enacted at the end of the night, bring ear plugs) but if you're in the LA/ OC area this is such a cool event to go to! Tickets are $20 if you preorder and so worth it. Totally going again next year.

Hello! A few snaps from Valentine's Day. Grant and I decided to hoof it to LA to go to the Jurassic Museum of Technology (the below photos are some iphone shots I took while there). We had been once before when I was living in LA and it seemed like it was high time to visit again. I have a soft spot for all things creepy, weird, and macabre (within reason!) but maybe I was feeling extra jumpy this day (too much caffeine?) because I was so creeped out and on edge when we went! Don't get me wrong, all of the exhibits are amazing and so interesting (especially the superstitions section) but I think the music is what put me on edge, it sounded like the kind of stuff you'd hear at a funeral parlor. I assure you It was all very romantic, though ;-)

Afterwards we grabbed some ice cream at Cool Haus and did some thrifting. We both found a bunch of cool stuff so I think cupid and the thrift gods were smiling down upon us. Then on the way home we stopped in San Pedro and poked around Ports of Call, which is where the above photos are from. Did you know where's a little red trolly that goes through the waterfront? We definitely plan on going back and taking it.

The museum has an amazing little library filled with old books on magic, nature, superstition--all sorts of great topics. I'd love to be able to read and peruse these books!

sunken city

The other day Grant and I decided to check out sunken city in San Pedro. We had been once a long time ago, before we started dating ( I think that was the first time we had hung out outside of school?). Anyway, we decided to suss it out again. Sunken city is/was a a coastal housing development that pretty much fell into the ocean after a bad landslide. As you can see, sunken city has that whole "romance of decay" thing going for it, with the added bonus of palm trees and the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop. The area is thoroughly tagged up and while we were there we saw some kids adding more tags to the mix. Technically this place is gated off with iron bars, except there is one whole bar missing along the fence which makes it super easy to slip in and out. When we went there were lots of people walking around trying to catch the sunset. Obviously, common sense prevails: stay away from the edge so you don't fall into the ocean and don't climb on anything that looks sketchy.

A hop, skip, and jump away is the Korean Friendship Bell which is where the last few photos were taken. Grant wanted to check it out so away we went. It's a neat spot perfect for flying kites (lots of people were doing this) and for checking out the ocean.

Every time I see the sun set over the ocean I try desperately to look for the green flash, a flash of light that appears right after sunrise and sunset. I command myself to keep my eyes wide open, and to avoid blinking at all costs. Sadly, I've never seen that green glimmer. There's always the next sunset, right?

Just dropping in to say hi! This outfit really isn't that interesting but it is representative of what I've been wearing lately: pants, sneakers, sweater/jacket. Kind of boring but sometimes boring feels right.

To be honest, I hate talking about what I'm wearing but I feel like I have to mention something about the outfit photos I post. I mean, nobody needs to read a five paragraph essay on why I like pants but I guess a cursory mention about my outfit isn't too terrible...

In much more interesting news, over the weekend Grant and I watched this Belle & Sebastian documentary made by Pitchfork. It delves into the making of Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister. If you like Belle & Sebastian I definitely recommend taking a look. BONUS there is also another documentary about Modest Mouse's Lonesome Crowded West--also worth seeing. Great job Pitchfork for making docs on two of my favorite bands/albums ;-)

And now to eat some thin mints and watch An Idiot Abroad.

Hello, hello! These photos are old (from November) but I guess I never got around to posting them. Grant and I took a trip up to LA (it seems like we've been going up to LA a lot, I feel like a lot of recent posts have started off with this same sentence) to visit the MOCA, eat pie, and stroll around Olvera Street. As we were waiting in line to get tickets for the MOCA, there was a woman in front of us who wanted her money back because she didn't like the exhibits at the museum. We both thought that was so strange until we walked in and saw this exhibit:

I'm only posting two photos to spare you, but it was seriously the creepiest art exhibit I've ever seen. The exhibit was of clowns at a funeral and what you can't hear are the sounds of sobbing and carnival music which really took the weirdness level to a 10. I will say though that Grant and I spent a lot of time within this space looking at the different clowns because they were SO realistic, like I was half expecting one to blink or to grab me or something. I guess I can understand why that lady wanted her money back.

PS: Totally surprised by this, but Who What Wear included me in their 2013 Best Of Street Style round up for best vintage outfits. Really unexpected but appreciated nonetheless :) You can check out the slideshow here
