Oil Prices

Thursday oil prices dropped to around $60.00 a barrel with employment and consumer news casting a dark cloud over energy markets. Last week employers cut 467,000 jobs for the month of June and unemployment rates rose to 9.5% making it the highest it's been in nearly 25 years. Consumers are fearful of a lot of things, losing their job and possibly losing their houses, so that means people are spending less and also spending more time at home, which has cut the demand of gasoline. The department of energy reported this week that the decreased usage of gasoline pushed inventories higher, "That's not a good sign," said Clarence Chu, Hudson Capital Energy trader. "It shows demand for gasoline hasn't picked up like it normally does this time of year." Gas dropped to a nationwide average of $2.58 a gallon compared to the sky high price of $4.10 a gallon one year ago. Price of oil set the tone for strong trading in energy and technology markets, with rather light trading in other markets.

Google

Google (GOOG) took it's attack on Microsoft (MSFT) one step further by announcing their plan to launch it's own operating system for PCs. Google said they will be working with computer makers to introduce a number of netbooks late next year, however no companies were named. Google released a blog posting Tuesday night announcing it's operating system stating, "We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear -- computers need to get better," wrote Sundar Pichai, Google's vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, Google's engineering director. Google is basing it's new operating systems off their successful browser Chrome released 9 months ago but, unless Google can significantly improve chrome, research analysts see them having a problem getting people to switch to a totally unfamiliar system, especially since Microsoft has been so successful and dominant for so many years. Even though Goggles shares were up 1.7% and Microsoft's were down 1.3% "It's going to be tough," said Standard & Poor's equity analyst Scott Kessler "The reality is that as the importance of a device or task increases, people have a much lower inclination to consider a change." The war between Microsoft and Google has increased over the past couple of years with Google dominating the search engine market, threatening Microsoft in ways no other company could. "This is going to generate a lot of hype, but it will probably be three to five years before it has any noticeable impact on the market." Gartner Inc. analyst Michael Silver said. Microsoft as of Wednesday has not responded.
