What to do with your vacation photos

We can't wait for vacation to come and then just like that, BAM! it's over. You find yourself back in the grind of daily chores and you can't remember your vacation. That's where all those fabulous photos you took at the (insert your vacation spot here) comes in. You DID take a bunch of awesome photos didn't you? Don't tell me you still have them in your camera and you haven't even downloaded them? Or are you still old schooling it and you have a drawer of film that needs to be dropped off? Either way dealing with the images sooner than later will result in your vacation being a great memory for you and the family.
     Social-Of course you could be a compulsive social media lurker that must at the moment something wonderful(or not so wonderful) happens on your supposedly "get away from it all" vacation, you must post where, when, who, what you are doing to all your "real friends".   It's fun to show all those friends in drought ridden, hotter than the desert Tennessee that you are in fact on a cruise at this minute headed to Alaska. Thanks. We hate you more.

Let me tell you the downfalls of posting every photo you take. #1-Not all of them are good. Ok, some are downright horrible. If I learned anything in photography school it was to edit, edit, edit. That and how to cry like an artist during a critique.   So posting your images on your facebook account or smugmug or flicker, etc is great, but edit it first. Choose one photo from each pose. Nothing like seeing 12 images of the same people and the only thing that changes is who is making the goofiest duck face. Also, don't ever post out of focus images. No matter how you justify by saying it is artistic. Don't do it. And for the love of Pete, clean the finger prints and pocket lint off your smartphone before taking photos! Great piece of advice from my college teacher, "The only difference in a good photographer and a bad photographer is you never see the good photographer's bad photos".
    Wall Art- Don't forget the old-now becoming new again displaying of your photos by(gasp) hanging them on the wall. There is something about going into someone's house and seeing how they proudly display their family photos on the wall or in frames on the mantle. Everyday you wake up and are able to look at your children, pets, and you at a moment that was captured. I still love that. There are so many options these days with gallery wraps, canvas and even metal prints that will fit the decor of your house. Large format photos are an awesome way to redecorate a room, and it is WAY cheaper than painting and buying new furniture.
     The Book- Gone are the days of holding your friends and family captive and torturing them with a slideshow of your trip to the Grand Canyon while you narrate. The ever popular coffeetable or story book is back and better than ever. Costs have come down and the designs are really cool.    You can even have one made for every vacation you take. They are out in the open for you to pull off the shelf and for your family to enjoy for years to come. How many times will you really want to take someone to your computer and show them your vacation or hold your iphone up to their noggin while you scroll thru your photos not ever doing justice to how the photos really look. More importantly will anybody WANT you to? That's annoying.

     Whatever you do. Do something. Before next year on your vacation you try to remember if you downloaded all the images because you need to the space to take one more amazing sunset shot.

Something Blue

In all my years of photographing weddings I've never had a groom call me the morning of the wedding. Until yesterday when my groom and grade school pal, John Summers, calls to say he needs a favor. "Well of course" I say. So John goes on to tell me that he is on his way to the reception site and the site where his bride to be, Machelle, is getting dressed (The Inn at Harvest Farm Lake)for their big day. In hand he has a dozen red roses. Oh how sweet I think, but that's not all. He has the vase tied with a blue ribbon and tied to that is a box. That's right girls! A jewelry box. Inside that box is a sapphire ring to complete Mac's something blue for the day. Oh how sweet! So he wants it all captured on film. Or at least all on digital chip. No problem I say. Below is Mac's reaction and how she kept from ruining her makeup I'll never know. Congrats to you both.

Oh, how I love spring. Everything seems new with all the trees and flowers blooming here in TN. It is also a new avenue for David and I as we venture into more lifestyle photography by photographing seniors. David and I meet some great people in this business and we consider ourselves lucky if we cross paths with them again. Saturday was such a day. In March of 2009 we photographed the beautiful wedding of Peter and Jackie in Nashville. Their day was a lot of fun and we were glad to be a part of it. This weekend we met up with them again and were introduced to their beautiful and playful daughter, Layla. I hope Jackie and Peter didn't feel left out being photographed, but their daughter was a lot of fun and was a great model for us so we couldn't stop taking photos of her. So beautiful today! Yesterday was cold and rainy and I hoped today was better. It was perfect. So were the bride and groom. Loved being a part of their day. Especially since the father of the bride was a childhood schoolmate from Morrison Elementary. I think we starting counting the years since we graduated 8th grade and then suddenly stopped when we realized we were nearing 30 years. Crazy how time goes by! What a wonderful fall day for Jess & Stephen's wedding! I had a great time today along with their family and friends who joined together at the Charlotte Road Baptist Church to share in their day. 1956 is the amount of photos I captured on my trip to North Dakota. I can say this had to be one of the best trips I've taken in a while except my husband, David wasn't with me, but my sister Carrie is a great traveling companion too. We hung out at the rodeo for a few days then on to the park and then the lake and overall we decided we wouldn't change anything about it except next time it has to last longer.

Kristen's Bridal Session

It's a love/hate relationship when photographing the bridal sessions. I love doing them but I hate I can't post them right away. Kristen's bridal session was no different. She looked terrific in her gown and we got some great images of her. Last Saturday night Kristen and Alan held their wedding reception at One Eleven's rooftop venue for all the guest who couldn't make their Montego Bay, Jamaica wedding on May 31st. It was a great night with lots of family and friends present to wish this couple a great start to their life together.
Thanks for letting David and I be a part of it. We love working with this family!

Who knew after the storms this week that it would be the perfect day to do some engagement photos, but it was. David and I met Kristen and Alan at Centennial Park today and we couldn't have asked for better weather. We were lucky to photograph Kristen's sister wedding and we are looking forward to seeing Kristen & Alan at their reception in June. This couple, who you can tell, are way crazy about one another are having a destination wedding, but we are excited to be a part of their after party. Crazy but Way Fun Time of Year

It has been so long since I've blogged, but I've wanted to find the time. And, now at 11pm at night while I'm waiting to batch out some photos I thought I would. David and I have been crazy busy and it has been a lot of fun. With everyone watching their spending and trying to be creative in the photo budget, we feared we would be bored this last quarter. We have been anything but that. It has been a great time of year to do some family portraits, weddings at the last minute and even some senior portraits. Ben Lomand and WK & T has kept us hopping with some cool corporate work. And now I am booking next year's weddings. Can you believe 2011 is at our door? We wish everyone a wonderful holiday and we thank you for choosing Miller Photography as your photographer and sharing a day in the life of your family with us. David and I really had a great time at the wedding for Jacqueline and Kevin. We got to enjoy spending the day with two great families. One from Alabama and one from Ireland.
