Hugh Cockrill and Brian Ferri…collaborators in innovation!

Innovation requires more than a great idea…the idea must also be manufacturable. Everytime I place a line into a CAD drawing I am thinking about it’s production. I owe that to people like Hugh Cockrill, the owner of Cockrill Precision Products. Hugh and I have worked together for the past 30 years…he introduced me to CNC machining and inspired me to purchase my first CNC lathe 25 years ago. Hugh is one of those people that can make anything whether it’s machined, welded, bent or molded.

Hugh has spent endless hours with me, teaching about the right way to do things, whether it’s tool selection or fixturing ideas. Hugh is an integral part of his clients’ design and production staff. Because of his knowledge and experience of manufacturing process he is often asked to assist in the initial product design to ensure efficient manufacture when his shop receives the job.  Standing on Hugh’s shoulders has allowed me to innovate products that are manufacturable, and I’m proud to be working with Cockrill Precision Products at Millibar.

Starting from scratch has its challenges and quickly reminds you to appreciate the little things so easily overlooked when you are at an established company. I remember when my old company first got the latest in PC technology with a 10mb hard drive.   Today, for half the money, a new computer has a billion (say it like Austin Powers, it’s more fun) times more power and features.

With collaboration tools like Skype and Gotomeeting, it’s amazing how easy it is to work side by side with someone who is miles away.  Google Voice allows us to have our office phone anywhere and everywhere. Social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn make it possible to keep a lifetime of resources close at hand.  So while it’s hard to start over, technology is certainly making it much easier. I have more ways to support my customers than ever before.

What internet-age tool do you use most to stay in touch with colleagues and customers? Whether we use a new age or old-school method, Millibar is committed to engaging with our customers to find the solutions they seek.

I am encouraged by the warm response I have received in the past 24 hours or so, since announcing the launch of my new company. Clearly, I know that I have made the right decision in pursuing my dream!

I do wish the folks at Vaccon well, as they were my extended family for many, many years. But, with no regrets whatsoever, I am looking toward the future and in finally having the corporate freedom to develop truly innovative vacuum solutions – with the design intelligence that can only come from years of engineering experience serving clients worldwide.
