I thought Donald Trump's last book was his best to date. In the same way that each of his buildings seems to trump his most recent, so too with this book. Trump has once again trumped Trump. This is his best book yet (why do I have a feeling that an even better book is already in process???).

This is an easy book for critics to dismiss as a celebrity fluff piece. But, the book really is far better than that. The fifty short essays, in and by themselves, are first rate commentary on important concepts for business and life. Taken together, the fifty essays provide a wonderful insight into the way Trump thinks and acts. And, gaining an insight into how Trump thinks and acts is worthwhile for he is world's pre-eminent master at personal brand building - a competency needed for almost every successful person.

Each of the fifty essays is well written, and each concept is illustrated by a short story to reinforce the point being made. The result is a book that almost invites speed reading...but I urge readers to slow down and really think through each of the fifty points being made. Even better yet, challenge yourself to grade yourself, as I have, on each of the fifty points. By grading yourself, I expect that you will gain new respect for Trump and new insights into just how brilliant Trump is.

Let's take the example of "You Can Better Your Best at Anytime." The fact that Donald Trump walks the talk with this mantra is readily apparent. Each of his buildings outdoes his previous best. As does each of his books. Etc. Etc. Prior to reading this book, that life philosophy was not woven into the fabric of my life. In a world where many guru's are preaching "good is good enough," Trump exhorts us to make our efforts a masterpiece. Now making everything a masterpiece could easily put someone into a state of frozen perfectionism, but Trump's philosophies also embrace a "get it done" style that is the antithesis to being frozen in perfectionism.

My greatest take-away from the book was one that came indirectly from the book. As I absorbed all that I was reading about Trump, the wisdom of Mike Robbin's terrific book Be Yourself, Everyone Else is Already Taken: Transform Your Life with the Power of Authenticity was heavy on my mind. Trump is the essence of the authenticity that Robbins suggests can be so powerful. As a result of these two books, I now see Trump as being bold, rather than just brash. A man who speaks his mind in a direct manner from which we can all learn. A man whose branding is based on the power of authenticity. And, a man whose real life gift is being a walking example of living an authentic life in an era where so many of our role models have been shown to be so lacking in authenticity.

Awesome book, especially for those who treat it like a classic and really, really reflect on the inner meaning of this collection of fifty thoughtful essays.

Trump: The Art of the Deal

Empire-Building 101 (perfect for eager Apprentices)

"Trump, who believes that excess can be a virtue, is as American as Manhattan's skyline," wrote George Will in the 1980's. Regardless of whether you think Donald Trump as a symbol of American success, or you think he's an annoying, chest-pounding egomaniac with bad hair, this book will show you what it took for him to build up his empire. The book shows Trump doing what he does best -- boldly making big deals -- during the "greed is good" decade of the 1980's. I found it interesting to see how much of his current empire he had built up before his 40th birthday, and to understand how he pulled off various deals.

The majority of the book is a swashbuckling, detailed history of his biggest projects. He talks about all the details, from negotiating with landholders, arguing about zoning with city officials, lining up contractors, interviewing architects, dealing with partners in various projects, negotiating with banks to line up financing, and the like.
Trump also devotes a couple chapters to his background. He was the son of a successful developer of rent-controlled & low-income housing in Queens and Brooklyn, NY. He was a mischievous, aggressive kid (he once punched a teacher), and was sent military school during his high-school years. He started college at Fordham in the Bronx, NY, to be close to home, but then then transferred to the Wharton Business School (at the University of Pennsylvania) because he liked its entrepreneurial emphasis. Shortly after college, he worked with his father to buy a troubled apartment complex in Cincinnati, which he fixed it up and sold for a multi-million dollar profit. Hungry for bigger things, he moved to a small studio apartment in Manhattan, and progressed from small deals to bigger ones, from renovating a hotel, to building Trump tower, to building and buying casinos in Atlantic city, along with a many other projects.
Besides the stories of his deal-making, Trump gives some tips for aspiring moguls. Although he believes you need a certain innate instinct for negotiating well, he thinks there are some tips everyone can use. For example: when planning deals, one should think big, always have a plan B, keep your options open, and use your advantages as leverage in negotiations. When executing a deal, one must deliver results, control costs, and fight competitors when necessary. Also, promotion of your project is important to get the word out. And finally, of course, Trump says one has to have fun doing all this -- if it's not fun, why do it?
Overall, the book was an OK read, and it moved quickly (I read it in about a day). Some reviewers were put off by Trump's bravado (but give me a break -- it's Donald Trump!! what did you expect?). If you can get past the bluster, you can see what it took to assemble his empire. I was inspired to re-read the book because of the success of Trump's new TV show, "The Apprentice," and I don't regret the day or so it took to re-read -- it's light reading & moves very quickly. If you'd like a quick refresher on Trump's rise, as I did, then this book (and some say the best book) should be on your reading list.

Think Big: Make It Happen in Business and Life

Trump's an Egomaniac, But His Book Makes Sense
I picked this book up while browsing at a local Borders Books recently. I actually chuckled as I began turning pages and skimming through the table of contents and the first few pages.

Soon, I found myself sitting down - the book still in my hands. Next thing I know, I'm at the checkout paying for it. What happened??

Trump is an egotistical, self-serving man, no doubt. But let's be totally objective, as I was that day: good advice is good advice. And, most writers do not have the courage to dispense such advice in such raw terms as Trump does.

This book holds nothing back. Trump lays it all out on the table with blatant opinions, ideas and thoughts about those who've crossed him, helped him, etc. He tells you how you need to be (not just what you need to do - read that again!) to be successful. However - and this is the most important point of my review - there's truth to so much of what he says. It's helpful. You'll look at yourself differently. You'll gain insight, and you'll learn things about yourself that you did not previously know. You might even be vaulted to a new level based on what you read; I don't know - that depends on you, the reader, and your potential application of what Trump discusses.

I'm not a huge fan of Trump, the man, but I cannot argue with his success. Forget those who claim he was born into money; that may be true, but he continues to make headlines with regularity. His projects are everywhere; his stamp is clearly there in the real estate world.

If you like Trump, you'll love this book. If you don't care for him, and can put your personal feelings aside (he's never done anything to hurt me, so I was ok in that area!), you're in for a mind-altering , no-holds-barred, shot-in-the-arm volume of encouragement, confidence-building tenets.

This book made me want to run out of the bookstore and head right for my office to go to work (and it was Saturday afternoon). Highly Recommended!

I've read all of Donald Trump's books. A friend gave me a review copy of his latest book which I devoured in one sitting. Donald's specific anecdotes about persistence along with his outstanding savvy business acumen are a gift. If you have ups and downs in business and have been through some troublesome relationships, you will not be disappointed.

Trump Strategies for Real Estate: Billionaire Lessons for the Small Investor

Great book for real estate investors-- or wanna be's!

No one knows Donald Trump better than George Ross, his right hand man for over 20 years. I wasn't sure what I was going to get from this book-- I picked it up because of Donald Trump's track record, and none of his other books really goes into real estate investing specifics. This book was a pleasant suprise with a lot of good investing tips. The best part of the book (and worth the $17 bucks) was the chapter on negotiation-- George Ross tells us how to make a good deal, great by using negotiation as a key tool. I can't wait to put this book to use.

Trump University Wealth Building 101: Your First 90 Days on the Path to Prosperity

One of the best I have read!

I have read books by just about every financial guru out there including many prior books by Donald Trump and I have to say this is the best one so far. Unlike many wealth building and investing books this book actually tells you what to do and more importantly what to do right now. If you really want to understand how people like Donald Trump think and then know how to translate that thought process into action you simply have to read this book.

The Trump Card: Playing to Win in Work and Life

Three and a half stars

I remember seeing newspaper photos of Ivanka Trump when she was about 9 years old so it was with a wry smile that I noticed her book and realized she'd grown up. There is no doubt that she has been born into privilege and luxury and so it's on that note that we understand that she's clearly not like the majority of us. Still, assuming she did write the book herself (and not with the aid of a ghost writer as suggested in an earlier review), I found the book very well written and with a few pieces of advice that would help any aspiring executive. The aspect of the book that kept niggling me was that her main message was to "keep putting in the hours". Now this is fine if you're living within 20 minutes of the office and have someone to cook, clean and take care of things at home but for most of us with homes or apartments (and lives) to maintain it seems this has not been figured into the book because perhaps she has someone to do those mundane things for her. Who knows. However, I did enjoy the book; she's energetic, enthusiastic and adores her dad - an ideal daughter. She shared her tips of handwritten notes to people who've inspired her and advocates always acting like a lady; positive advice, especially in a time when role models for young businesswomen are very few. Now that Ivanka is engaged (there was no reference to her private life in the book at all), perhaps she would consider a book on balancing work, travel, planning a wedding and running a home, all the while looking fabulous and well rested. I don't mean to be mean, but in the real world this is where a lot of women would like some guidance. . .

Lacing each chapter with stories retold by online millionaires, Joyner's 101 approach (with sub-chapter headings like The Lowdown and How It Works) may not appeal to the Internet enthusiast, or anyone under the age of 16, but will be a breath of fresh air to the web-challenged. Joyner keeps it simple and paints with broad strokes . . . so for me - a member of the latter group, Millionaire helped break down the intimidating and self-imposed barriers I have towards the Internet. I couldn't build a website before reading this book and I probably won't anytime soon, but the curtain has been pulled and the mystery revealed.

Fabulous book!
Great book filled with successful eBay stories. My favorite was Chapter 2: Adam Hersh. I leave a copy on the end table in our living room because we pick it up so often.

The eBay Millionaire: Titanium PowerSeller Secrets for Building a Big Online Business

Very inspiring for beginners

This is a pretty good "how to" book. However, if you've been selling at all on ebay, there's not a whole lot of "secret" left to much of the text - a lot of it I had figured out on my own through trial and error. If you haven't sold much on ebay, the PowerSellers success stories will definitely be inspiring. For more advanced ebay sellers, I'd suggest "The 7 essential steps to successful ebay marketing"- I picked up a copy the other day, and read it in a night! It's more of a strategy book than a "tip" book and I'm confident that it's going to help me earn more money with my ebay business.

SECRETS OF A FREELANCE WRITER by Bob Bly is a bit of rehash. Yes, I know, this is a thrid edition and is supposed to be an updated rehash, but there is also a lot of content here from some of Bly's other books, such as The Copywriter's Handbook. The thing is, there is also enough new and valuable content here to make this another "must read" for copywriters.

This book also very closely mirrors Peter Bowerman's Well-Fed Writer with much of the same content. That's not necessarily a bad thing and just adds confirmation to the advice being given.

I wont begin to talk about what you might take away from this book. Different people are going to take away different ideas. But suffice it to say, you WILL learn a lot here. Even though this plate has leftover vegetables, the meat is hot off the grill.

Rich Dad's Conspiracy of the Rich: The 8 New Rules of Money

Genius or Gimmick...you decide. Good Book Filled with Solid Info
First of all, I'm not a Kiyosaki fan...his style of writing just tends to annoy me however, he is one of those authors that is able to effectively communicate with the average person and often has one or two gems that make it worthwhile to read his books. Having said that, this book is a bit different than his others both in terms of content and style. It is primarily compiled from his website which by this point, is both a work in progress as well as a day by day breakdown of the current economic crisis unfolding as history. The book contains comments by readers of the website/blog as well as more traditional insight and commentary by Kiyosaki et al.

As a college instructor as well as business writer, I'm quite familar with authors that "try out" or compose a book from class notes, lectures, journal submissions and articles etc...but few have used an online format as a pure marketing ploy to generate both interest and actual content. I suspect it takes a highly recognized name and a major economic melt-down to pull it off. Sales of this book will certainly determine if it is pure genius or merely a gimmick.

Aside from the collaborative nature of the book, the actual writing retains the same consumer friendly, conversational tone found in former "Rich Dad" books with the very pleasant lack of constant reference to the "dads" which was a personal pet peeve. Personally I found this to be more readable than most and equally interesting.

The author departs from the prior "real estate" emphasis into a much broader investment perspective which includes precious metals and other assets, proper use of debt, information and much more. I was fairly impressed by both the rationale and future trends as well as the very "do-able" information presented. It is obvious the author has taken time to create something within the grasp of average Americans by first providing a framework for safety then moving beyond to creating choices for potentially more rewarding investments. At each step of the way a solid rationale is provided...whether one agrees or disagrees, it is valuable to reflect upon where the author is "coming from" in order to make up your own mind as to the validity of the position or not.

Readers that enjoyed Ron Pauls' recent 'End the Fed" will be delighted by the straight-forward discussion about the status of the government, Fed and more in this recent book. Kiyosaki doesn't mince words this time around and does so in a purely equitable manner that doesn't offend - but is designed to enlighten the reader to the dangers surrounding them at every turn.

More savvy investors may not find a lot new however, those searching for a fresh start or trying to make sense of the current economic crisis and future financial trends in an easy to understand way will truly appreciate this book. There is overlap from prior books but also a surprising amount of newer or revised content that is well worth the time of former readers to review.

Excellent Reading for Real Estate Investors
This book is worth it's weight in gold! I've liked all of Kiyosaki's books and courses but this one really stands out.

Mr. Kiyosaki has brought together some brilliant minds and what they wrote is easy to understand and makes absolute sense.

As an investor specializing in lease options, I tried to do it all on my own and got 4 contracts but then they were not with motivated sellers.

While reading this book, it became very clear to me the importance of having a team of people to help you out. My biggest take away is "Investing is a team sport." Yes, I know that's a 'no-brainer' but now I truly realize what he and the others who contributed are trying to say in this volume.

Lately, I've switched over to specializing in tax deeds and liens and the chapter on lien investing by Mr. Wheelright is very good - he makes it very simple and easy to understand.

I highly recommend this book. It is in the top 3 books on real estate investing that I've ever read, and I'm a book and seminar junkie. Get this book today!!

Rich Dad's Before You Quit Your Job: 10 Real-Life Lessons Every Entrepreneur Should Know About Building a Multimillion-Dollar Business

Read it if you are serious about making the change

I am amazed yet not surprised by the range of reviews. This is absolutely Robert's best book ever. I totally appreciated Sharon's input as she is a straight "A" student like me and I can identify with her intelligence. However I can also identify with Roberts academic weakness because I studied a highlly skilles E/S profession not Business so as far as business is concerned, I'm as dumb as he was in the beginning.

I have read Roberts first 3 books, listened to most of his CD's, Studied his Choose to be rich program and am presently enrolled in Coaching. Every time he starts any teaching he covers the basics so if you never read one of his other books you get an introduction to the concepts. Since the books each build on the other he refers you to the others for further details on some concepts. People like me who are serious about making the transition from employee and self employed to business owner and investor hungrily soak up every word out of Roberts mouth. I noticed that most negative reviewers admit to skimming over the book or just listening to the abridged CD. You missed the meat. I'm sorry for you. It's sad to see someone fight so hard for the right to stay the same.

I too find Robert repetitive at times but I use the opportunity to remind myself of old lessons and prepare myself for the new lesson to come. This new lesson usually stands on the foundation of the previous lesson hence why he must repeat it at least briefly.

On my own personal journey to Business owner and Investor I have found Robert's guidance on changing who you ARE and finding the WHY for your change before working on the HOW-TO PRICELESS!! People who want a GRQ (get rich quick) will never like Robert. They should stop buying his books and go elsewhere.
If you really want to make the change don't just read, STUDY. I don't know if you will ever find this dept of insight into what the change really costs anywhere else. Almost Every other writer wants you to think they are great and that is why they are successful. Robert is brutally honest. This is what we need.

Zig Ziglar's Secrets of Closing the Sale [Paperback]

What Objections?? ....,
Before my first read of this book, I actually asked that question. Then, as I was 2/3rd's of the way finished, I realized that I have experienced several objections. Most of which I had accepted as reasons to move on.Through this book, I have learned that all sales people experience objections, and that it is the savvy salesperson who responds to those objections as though she is a guide, leading her prospect towards her solutions.
Through reading this book, I have written so many notes in the margins, and in a binder that I had to stop to type the details out, then add to them, as I evolved.
I really appreciate this book, because as someone who sells services, and not products, yet, I was able to write directions that work in closing sales to even the most difficult of prospects. I recommend this book to anyone, rather or not you are in sales, because this teaches you to persuade others to accept your ideas, thoughts, products and services. ....

Zig Ziglar's Leadership & Success Series (Made for Success Collection)

Must have..
Zig has a way of making to mind some amazing things and in this book he does it again. Simply. It is a joy to listen to this book and surely is a good investment in self .

Though much of this presentation is from seminars held in the early 90's and references experiences from the 70's and 80's, it is amazing how "current" most of it is.
I found it to be very useful and inspiring and it reinforced for me so much of what I have read and learned over the years.
If you are a leadership student, this series will not disappoint!

If you are looking for the best Zig has to offer then you will find it here. I have read most of Zigs books and he really has refined his talent at simply summing up the points of successful living. You will find in this book he is more open with his faith than in any other work.

He illustrates 3 areas of life that are necessary for success:
1. Passion
2. Peak performance
3. Purpose

Having read a lot of personal development books including Tony Robbins, Napoleon Hill, John Maxwell, Brian Tracy and many more, I really do believe this is the best collection of ideas on how to be successful. Zig shoots straight and doesn't overstate what people are capable of. Some other personal development guys will do that, "YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!" sort of attitude. Zig doesn't limit. He is just realistic.

The writing is quick and to the point, unlike this review. Great job zig.

How to Get What You Want - AUDIO CD

Zig Makes it Sound so Easy.
I listened to this audio CD in the car. I was very satisfied of the message and it's delivery. I've always been able to create a destination but never knew exactly how to set the goals that would help me through a mapped out journey. Zig Ziglar uses great analogies in his seminar that anyone can comprehend and use as a model for setting their path.

The biggest lesson was about the company we keep, or the situations we keep ourselves in; we are who we associate ourselves to be. If we have negative thoughts, negative will be surrounding us. Positive thoughts will be a positive aura for us. It is our way of thinking that forms us. His example included the child with CP; this child had 30 diagnoses that he would never do, never walk, never be... but this child was raised with a different mindset and miraculous things became possible. As with a second child to reference, the child was misdiagnosed with CP; that child's life was able to show the complexity of psychology for thoughts and actions.

Zig uses humor in his anecdotes and it carries well with his audience. I found myself recognizing many things that I'd overlooked or taken for granted in the past. I chuckled often with the humorous stories. There is even a section for motivating anyone who needs help with dieting. He broke it down so well, it seems fail-proof.

I recommend this audio (and I mean AUDIO, not so much a book because you cannot feel his energy by reading text) to anyone who struggles with 'where to start' as they journey along the 'wandering' path. I look forward to hearing more of his speeches.

Mastering Online Marketing: 12 Keys to Transform Your Website into a Sales Powerhouse

Masterful book writing..
Most of us who hang out on the Internet find ourselves suckered by those offers of books or "just $97" or "just $27." We forget the truth: we can just go to the library and get a head start on a good marketing education.

I'm recommending this book to folks who are clueless about getting started on the Internet. It's an excellent overview -- clear and well-written in step by step format.

As a web site copywriter myself, I wish Meyerson had emphasized the importance of copy. There's a nice quote from copywriting guru Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero (p. 86), but it's in the design section.

Just about every Internet marketing guru says copywriting is the single most important skill for Internet marketers, so this chapter could have been much longer. I would also encourage newbies to start with copy and strategy rather than calling the designer first (which is what most people do).

And I wish we had a section on features vs benefits with examples of bullet points.

Still, this book is one of the best (if not *the* best) I've seen for broad overviews of Internet marketing. You can always dig deeper once you've got a sense of the basics.

Success Secrets of the Online Marketing Superstars

Comprehensive and informative...let's hope it's not a gimick.
I bought this book on a whim not having read any reviews. I wanted to brush up on what the experts in the Marketing field were doing with their companies to be successful and grow at the same pace as the internet. And, I have been able to do that with this book. It's comprehensive, easy to read, and goes a little beyond the whole "you should do this" in theory and tries to show the reader how to apply the concepts to real-life scenarios.

I wouldn't equate this to a Marketing 101 class -- it's basic, yes, however I think you need to have more than just a surface level understanding of the marketing platforms they discuss to get the most out of the book: blogs, copy writing, developing lists, branding, affiliate marketing, product development, coaching, etc.

Each contributing writer has his own business and they don't hold back from assertively yet not too aggressively selling you on their product or service. It gets to be borderline annoying, however if the multitude of resources they outline in the book are really of quality (I haven't checked any out yet), it's worth it for the person who is seriously going to set up shop online. Otherwise, the book is a little more than a gimick to make money off the aspiring entrepreneur.

Bottom line, the book is a quick read and worth the purchase and time for a person who has adequate marketing background and wants more than just a basic "to-do" checklist for setting up a business and understanding what drives online sales and brand loyalty. When the time comes to put in the legwork and go live, all the information and resources they provide will become useful to do things right. But, to do it right and learn from these experts we have to do the homework they leave us with...

The techniques work and work fast. You will learn how to enhance all areas of your life. Most other books repeat the same things, not Brian. I also highly recommend the audio tape program, Pyschology of Achievement and the Pyschology of Selling by Brian and SuperSelf by Charles Givens, probably one of the most under rated books out there on personal development.

The Psychology of Selling: Increase Your Sales Faster and Easier Than You Ever Thought Possible

Understand the finer aspects of the psychology of succesfull selling.

A good book on developing your sales technique. Worth a read, but be warned that at least 50% of the content is 'old news' that you probably have already read in other sales books.

However, the OTHER 50% is worth reading, and will help you master the little nuances of the sales and closing interview.

A lot of emphasis on the 'behind-the-scenes' aspects of the science of selling - from where the title.

Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time

Excellent

Eat that Frog is an excellent motivational book. The complaints I see by most here are along the lines that there's nothing new in this book. To me, there's nothing new in MOST self help books. After all, we each know that the way to stop procrastinating is to just do what we dread, the way to lose weight is to burn off more calories than we consume, the way to keep house is to clean and organize on a regular basis, and so on. What we seek is some motivation and some reasoning for doing what we dislike doing.
Brian Tracy gives this motivation and reasoning. This is a short, fast read. As the author says, it doesn't go into all the psychology of procrastination; rather, it gets right to the action. Brian Tracy covers such things as determining priorities, delegating and eliminating some tasks, knowing what's okay to procrastinate about, and whether to tackle your "frog" (your big task that will lend the greatest results) first or a lesser priority task.
The result is a clear, concise book that is helpful and shows that by regularly eating your frogs first, you develop a habit that makes it easier to accomplish more than the average person and do it with increasingly less effort. An excellent, worthwhile book that you will likely refer to time and time again.

Reinvention: How to Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life

"Creative destruction" to achieve personal transformation

I have read and reviewed most of Brian Tracy's previously published books and hold him high regard because he has helped so many people to overcome the barriers to their personal as well as professional development, especially when many (if not most) of the limits are self-imposed. Tracy agrees with what Henry Ford observed long ago: "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right." When climbing mountains, ladders, whatever, attitude usually does determine altitude. But he also realizes that many people feel overwhelmed by their circumstances, have no self-confidence, and need help in the form of sound, practical, step-by-step advice. Tracy positions himself as a counselor, not as a cheerleader. In this book, he shares his thoughts about a process of reinvention that can enable almost anyone to achieve whatever goals they may have.

In Chapter Two, the reader is asked to begin a series of exercises (many of which are completed within the book) and continue until the last chapter. Tracy realizes that, more often than not, "haste makes waste" and certainly advises against impulsive behavior, especially when making decisions, but he does urge his reader to "move fast when an opportunity or need presents itself. Pick up the pace. Take action of some kind. Get on it with it!" Completion of the various exercises helps to expedite the process of personal reinvention while reinforcing Tracy's key points. I also recommend use of a notebook or journal in which to record thoughts and feelings, express concerns, document key developments, etc. Personal reinvention consists of both a journey and destination. Those embarked on that process should be results-driven.

Tracy recommends a basic five-step formula for high productivity: "First, decide exactly what you want, in terms of your goals and objectives. [Word of caution: They should be few in number, challenging but do-able, and frequently modified as needed.] Second, make a list of everything that you have to do today to move you toward the achievement of those goals and objectives. Third, organize your list by priority and select you're A-1, the most important single task you could complete right now. Fourth, begin immediately on your number-one task and discipline yourself to work at it single-mindedly until it is 100 percent complete. Finally, keep repeating, over and over to yourself, the wonderful words `Do it now! Do it now! Do it now!" To these I presume to add one more suggestion: Do not announce to anyone that you are embarked on a self-improvement program and will accomplish goals A-1, A-2, and A-3. Perhaps Tracy would not object if the words to be repeated (to one's self) are "Just do it and do it now! Just do it and do it now! Just do it and do it now!" Over the years, I have encountered people who are world-class list maskers. One in particular compiled so many "to do" lists that he had to make a list of the lists he had accumulated. Unfortunately for him, he was so busy compiling lists that he never got around to getting much done. Thomas Edison was correct: "Vision without execution is hallucination."

This book is essentially worthless unless and until various exercises are completed and then appropriate and expeditious action is taken. Sometimes progress is best achieved incrementally. (As an ancient aphorism suggests, "The best way to eat a whale is one bite at a time.") There will be delays, mistakes, and even a few setbacks. Keep in mind that they are probably inevitable but only temporary. Long ago, Joseph Schumpeter introduced the concept of "creative destruction" when explaining how to strengthen an organization. Like the large crepe myrtle tree my wife and I have in our backyard, every organization needs to be "pruned" on a regular basis in order to thrive. In some respects, Tracy's concept of reinvention is a variation on Schumpeter's concept of creative destruction: Both require "lean thinking" that eliminates whatever is not essential to success, however it may be defined and measured.

Brian Tracy is the author of this book and it can certainly serve as an excellent "guide" but those who read it must understand that they, not he, will determine whether or not they achieve any success in their lives.

I'm a longtime Brian Tracy fan, because applying his knowledge has helped me make millions. This latest book is, without a doubt, the single most valuable public speaking book I've read to date (and I've read virtually every one published - I also recommend Lilly Walter's works).

I've been a professional speaker for over 20 years, and this is one book that I learned a lot of new tactics from, and wish I'd been able to see earlier in my speaking career.

Here's what makes Brian's book such a winner:

- detailed audience analysis techniques: Brian reveals what information you absolutely Must know before presenting to an audience. And this goes far beyond what you'd typically think about asking for.. many subtleties here re audience dynamics that are, in retrospect, things I should've been asking meeting planners for earlier. What was a pleasant surprise was, I thought I'd read it all, seen it all and that there was very very little anyone could reveal to me about public speaking that I hadn't already done, seen on video, or read in a book. And Brian came through and overdelivered by putting together very advanced (as well as new) topics in this book, which after reading, gave me a lot of "ah hah" insights, that I will leverage in my public seminars and online videos.

This is one of my favorites of all of Brian's books I've gotten over the years.. (also I recommend Brian's 2 DVDs on the topic, they're superb.. this book extends and adds to what he has in his DVDs, with more details).
Brian's personal productivity never ceases to astound me - and his clear, easy-to-profit by techniques. I'm such a fan, because using what I've learned from Brian has helped me achieve so much, in service of so many.

If you speak (this means Anyone - managers, speakers, trainers, sales professionals), which we all do - I highly recommend this immensely readable, ultimately successful book as a "must have" for your personal development. A+++

Scott Fox' first book, Internet Riches, changed the way people thought about online marketing and building a legitimate business online. Scott Fox personal resume and credibility speaks for itself, having worked with Bill O'Reilly, Larry King and everyone in between.

What I most like about Scott and E-Riches is his approach. There are two key principles here: he explains concepts specifically and in plain English and two, he is a businessman and not just an online marketer. He has actually used the strategies that he reveals in detail to build his own online businesses with enormous success. So, again, credibility. Unlike most marketing authors, he has actually walked the walk.

E-Riches is an extraordinary book, full of key insights and specific "how to" recommendations to actually promote your business online and achieve measurable results in a short time period.

The chapters on E-Mail Publishing strategies are worth the investment in the book alone. I have personally used them with my own online businesses and can tell you from personal experience they work.

I am a professional SEO (Internet Marketing) Consultant myself and have a great deal of experience in the field. I only wish I could communicate what can often be complex topics with such clarity.

Looking at the above topics that are covered in plain English it is impossible to not find several specific marketing strategies that will propel you sales online, build your online credibility and increase traffic to your website exponentially.

If I sound enthusiastic about this book it's because I am. I make my living in the fascinating world of online marketing. I am not a theorist, if the strategies I implement for myself and my client don't work, I'm out of business.

I have personally used the specific marketing tactics E-Riches covers with very impressive results.

I hope you enjoy this book, you will quickly learn that you can market yourself and your business online without breaking the bank. And, you'll have a lot of fun doing it!

Internet Riches: The Simple Money-Making Secrets of Online Millionaires

Title is gimmicky but info inside is top notch

Over the last few years, I have seen so many of my favorite bloggers and new websites become popular enough that their owners have quit their day jobs, and I always wondered how they got their ideas or how they got started. I want what they have, but I had no idea how to get there from here.

Fox's book was just the kick in the pants I needed. I am very familiar with the computer and the internet, but am low on techy skills, inspiration, and knowledge about how to build an online business.

This book was awesome because he details what others have done to achieve success, the steps one must take and the work involved in each kind of online business, the different types of business and what business model is most suitable each kind.

Then, in addition to all that, he provides the questions and inspiration needed to jog our own thoughts about what we might be passionate or knowledgeable enough about to start a business, and has such perfect memory and inspiration jogs that I went from not having any ideas to having too many to reasonably act on immediately.

He focuses on all the different kinds of e-business, so you don't need an item to sell or a particular idea in mind to get started with this book. Rather, this book is perfect for those who have some interest in owning their own online business but need to know more about what exactly it entails and how one would make a business like this profitable.

I tried the Dummies book on this topic and was sorely disappointed - it felt like a big advertisement through the whole book, and didn't really give me any of the tools I needed to get going or to inspire me with a new idea to act on. I'd recommend Fox's book instead, as the first book to read if you are thinking of starting an online business.

Seven Years to Seven Figures: The Fast-Track Plan to Becoming a Millionaire (Agora Series) [Paperback]

Excellent book on the whole even though the personal stories were a little boring. Having said that, the "Afterword" alone was worth the price of the book. Masterson is the Master at presentation, transitions, and bulletizing his review(s); the great learning keys to transferring knowledge and skills.

As a follow up to Automatic Wealth (which was a rich pearl) he drives home the point that you have to have a hard work ethic if you really want to succeed at wealth. And if you're willing to work hard enough, you can do it easily in 7 years. "The best way to guarantee that you will accomplish something is to make it your number one priority."
I know that it is very easy to accomplish this in seven years. My personal experience (from hard work) reveals that you really can do this in about 4.5 years. Of course everything depends on how you manage and apply the three components he explains in the book: "Getting wealthy involves three components: -how LONG you invest, -how MUCH you invest, and -what RATE OF RETURN you achieve." The summary point is that you can get wealthy by increasing any ONE of these three components. And just about anyone can understand that. All that's left is finding a plan, based on your own income (from your job and/or investments), to increase one or more of those components.

Masterson also notes that even though you can get wealthy fast, passive investing doesn't work, you can't get wealthy quickly unless you can afford to invest a lot of money, and to invest a lot of money, you need to make a lot of money (from your job or other investing). And I think that creates many a disgruntled reader looking for a quick way to get rich.
By following your net worth, you will see how you can make enough money to put away between $20,000 and $200,000 every year just by managing one or two endeavors that fit your profile, pocketbook, and perspective. The author recommends that you can: -invest directly in brand-new businesses (tough), and/or -invest directly into real estate (easy). I, of course, have chosen the easy way - real estate.
I appreciate reading this book and like many other great books, it not only illuminates my outlook at wealth-building and wealth-perpetuation, but more importantly, it also validates some of the practices that we (my wife and I) use ourselves already - and fosters a fond spirit of achievement knowing that our actions are in line with those who have had great success themselves.

Automatic Wealth for Grads... and Anyone Else Just Starting Out [Hardcover]

Just finished Automatic Wealth for Grads in the same fashion I read most wealth-building/self-help books - with a bit of skipping around to the chapters I think will help out the most. In this title, I could have lived without a compounding interest chapter, but that's because I'm already knowledgeable on the subject. For the audience - grads 'and anyone else just starting out' - I think it's helpful to include it. But there are a few chapters that stand out that make this book worth buying.

I'm in the stock and real estate markets, and his chapters on these subjects are practical and long-term oriented - that fits for me, and again, for the audience, it should fit also. He's very candid about his success, and it comes across as down-to-earth. The moneymaking advice is sound (I took away a handful of his ideas that I plan to try out), but overall, it's also a pretty enjoyable read - straightforward, simple, honest. Good book. Would recommend.

Automatic Wealth: The Six Steps to Financial Independence [Paperback

Masterson, a self-made millionaire, puts forth a logical approach for building wealth. He believes that a person, who is willing to put in the effort and time, can amass wealth in a period of 7 to 15 years. I think that timing is a bit optimistic, but even if it takes 20 to 25 years, the end result is still the same - financial independence, more freedom and tranquility. Masterson believes one's primary goal is to accumulate enough capital to generate passive income to pay for life's necessities.

This 271-page book is divided into only six detailed chapters. Each one explains one of the six steps to achieving wealth, which are:
1. Face the facts - you won't get rich saving 10% or more in your pension plan or getting measly salary increases.
2. Plan to become wealthy - This is occurs one step at a time and requires planning.
3. Develop specific wealthy habits - work hard, good a what they do, are extraordinary savers, pay themselves first
4. Radically increase your income - to the tune of 25% to 150%
5. Get rich while you sleep - by receiving passive income
6. Retire early - to live the lifestyle you want

Masterson provides specific examples of each of his six steps, as well as personal experiences and appropriate stories. It all seems very real and makes a lot of sense. He mentions that an individual has to make getting rich a priority and be willing to focus his/her energies on building wealth. He also covers the need to have a detailed short-term and long-term written action plan with specific goals.

The author suggests that everyone choose specific lifetime goals; calculate their retirement income needs based upon an analysis of assets and liabilities, and lifestyle requirements. He then recommends that individuals prepare wealth building goals, health goals, personal relationship goals, and personal growth and development goals. These goals should be set for daily, weekly, and monthly timeframes. He is a strong believer in time management and suggests managing time in 15-minute increments so that multiple goals can be worked on during the day.

Masterson believes that real estate can provide significant income and spends time covering how to invest in real estate and what the income should look like. Although he does mention investing in the stock market, he only invests 2% of his money in it. He is reluctant to plunk down a chunk of his money in stocks because they are too risky for him. Obviously, looking back the stock market's devastation during 2000-2002 and the real estate market's appreciation during that time period, his advice seems right on the mark.

He feels the stock market is a very difficult place to make money, and that investors should tread lightly there. For those who invest, he strongly urges them to cut losses at a specific level (25% for him), and use stop loss orders and trailing stops to protect profits. He does not recommend investing in the market unless you have at least $100,000 to invest.

He is a strong believer in investing a sizable portion of income in side businesses and local real estate to build wealth over time. He prefers investing in income generating real estate, buying rental properties, and buying fixed income investments - holding bonds to maturity to avoid any principal losses due to rising interest rates.

Overall, Masterson does a masterful job of explaining the steps necessary to accrue wealth and enjoy life. For those who believe that investing in the stock market is a critical element in the process, as I do, I recommend a newly published book by Paul Merriman titled "Live it Up without Outliving Your Money" which provides a conservative way to build a highly diversified portfolio that has outperformed the market with less risk.

The Pledge: Your Master Plan for an Abundant Life (Agora Series) [Hardcover]

I have enjoyed Michael Masterson's writing in the "Early to Rise" e-newsletter for a few years now, and I've also enjoyed a couple of his earlier books, including "Seven Years to Seven Figures." So, when I learned a new book he'd written was coming out that focused on his strategies and systems for creating a master plan to live an abundant life, I immediately ordered it from my local bookstore and moved it into my immediate reading list. I was that interested in what Masterson had to say on the topic, and having just finished reading the book this morning, I was not disappointed in the least.

"The Pledge: Your Master Plan For An Abundant Life" by Michael Masterson is and enjoyable, motivating, and informative book that is meant to be used, not just read. Masterson makes a point in one of his chapters, and near the end in the conclusion that information in not the key to success and happiness, but the acting on information is what counts. He essentially shares the strategies he's used to become very successful in most people's definition of success. Not just financially, but in the quality of life lived. (Something he stresses often.) However, he is also one to point out that it does not come easy by just thinking positive or by working only four hours a week. To become financially successful, one must work. And Masterson shares that one must often work hard. But when the hard work pays off, it can often open up areas of quality recreation that success brings.

In the Introduction, there is a short test to help you look at your life and determine how good it really is. If nothing else, this gets you thinking about what your life is like, and if you want to make positive changes, it is good to look at where you are beginning. He also discusses some obstacles to achievement that many face. Next come the eight chapters, which are called "Parts One - Eight."

Part One focuses on your Master Plan and what it takes to change your life. Essentially this part tells you why you need to plan and motivates you to get started doing it. Part Two is about goal setting, and Masterson shares how he does it and why he recommends you do it too. Part Three focuses on living day by day abundantly. Masterson's key? Become an early riser. He explains why and provides some suggestions on how to get up early if you aren't already. I also enjoyed the look into his typical day. It was sort of like Donald Trump did in a couple of his books. This chapter also had suggestions on how to be on top of everything. Definitely some good advice.

Part Four was titled "Creating A Richer, More Enjoyable Life." I liked this chapter and the examples of Golden, Vaporous and Acidic Choices. Reading this chapter should get people looking at the choices they make and what they get from those choices. He also provides some strategies for living a simpler and fuller life that may resonate with many people in this complex world we now live in. Additionally, there are other suggestions for living that if implemented would help you enjoy life better.

Part Five deals with the push you need to succeed, or as Masterson puts it, giving yourself a kick in the pants. The Junkies Secret is not a way I've looked at this topic before, but it made good sense and I think the message here can help people become more motivated to go for their dreams. This chapter also looks at positive thinking, dealing with fear, and taking the big leap. Part Six discusses the skills of the most successful and how you can learn and implement them into your own life. I read a ton, but I still picked up a tip or two that I plan on using to read even more and get more from what I read.

In Part Seven, Masterson shares his ways to defeat obstacles that get in the way of success. Like the other chapters, there are some good strategies here. Topics include e-mail problems, being in a rut, and nine steps to defeating depression. Part Eight focuses on building wealth, and Masterson shares different ways people can accumulate wealth and the ways he's done it. This is not a how to, but rather a look at directions you can look at, and then it will be up to you to pick one and learn how to implement that course to make money.

Masterson then sums up the book with a conclusion that lets you know what you've just learned, but also encourages you to become a better person, and above all, take action now. His final words, "The time to act is now. Seize it!"

I enjoy books in the business and self-help categories. They motivate me to continue to drive forward and if I implement one or two strategies from a book that help me advance in an area of my life, it was well worth the time to read and study. This book is one of the most enjoyable and useful books in this area that I've read in a long time. I have already marked the sections I want to look at again as I try some of Masterson's suggestions in my own planing. I think anyone who reads this book and actually acts on the information provided will undoubtedly advance on their journey toward living an enriched and abundant life.

A good guide for the entrepreneur

"Nothing matters more than selling," says the author. "Many first-time entrepreneurs have the impression that they are doing things in a logical order when they look for the perfect office space, have logos designed, and order a lot of inventory. The reality is they are wasting valuable resources on secondary and tertiary endeavors. If no one is going to buy what you want to sell, you've just wasted a bunch of money on a business that will never be."

I see this when a client comes to me and has spent most of his small budget on Web site design and left the important thing, the sales message, for least --- just to fill in the beautiful design. They've spent their money on the least important and have no money left for the most important. This book addresses just these issues.

In this new book Masterson gives a three-step process that entrepreneurs should follow in order to have a successful business. Unfortunately, most do not. I've seen this first hand in my own consulting business. Entrepreneurs tend to put their values and their money on all the wrong things --- and this leads to certain failure.

Here are the steps according to Masterson:

Step one: Get the product ready enough to sell, but don't worry about perfecting it. Step two: Sell it. Step three: If it sells, make it better. While this all sounds fairly easy, it's not.

"Selling can be terrifying," Masterson says. "It can be tough, gritty, unglamorous work. But when you make that first big sale, you realize it's also exhilarating. And like it or not, you probably won't become a successful entrepreneur until you can sell your product or service in your sleep."

When your business is new, you should begin to build a base of customers or clients --- that means you have to sell. Online, that would mean you have to have a powerful sales message on your Web site and in all of your online advertising.

Successful entrepreneurs should (and generally do) spend most of their time --- especially in the beginning --- on selling. Most are very bad at it.

"As the business grows out of its infancy--as it goes beyond the million-dollar revenue mark by selling many more products through many more channels--you can let other people do most of the selling," says the author.

"But by establishing your marketing credentials during the first stage, when the selling secrets of your business are still unknown, you will gain a deep understanding of your business that will serve you well for the rest of your career."

The author writes in an engaging style. This material should help those starting their own business and even those already in business. I see so many mistakes that entrepreneurs make and they tend to be the same things all the time.

If you can avoid those mistakes, you can quickly leap over everyone else and become successful.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

     As the title of the book implies, Covey describes the seven habits of highly effective people and techniques for adopting the seven habits. Covey makes clear that an individual must make a paradigm shift before incorporating these habits into his/her own personal life. A paradigm is essentially the way an individual perceives something. Covey emphasizes that if we want to make a change in our lives, we should probably first focus on our personal attitudes and behaviors. He applies different examples via family, business, and society in general.
     This book's focal point is on an approach to obtain personal and interpersonal effectiveness. Covey points out that private victories precede public victories. He makes the example that making and keeping promises to ourselves comes before making and keeping promises to others.
Habits 1, 2, and 3 deal with self-mastery. They move an individual from dependency on others to independence. Habits 4, 5, and 6 deal with teamwork, cooperation, and communication. These habits deal with transforming a person from dependency to independence to interdependence. Interdependence simply means mutual dependence. Habit 7 embodies all of the other habits to help an individual work toward continuous improvement.
     Habit 1 discusses the importance of being proactive. Covey states that we are responsible for our own lives; therefore, we possess the initiative to make things happen. He also points out that proactive people so not blame various circumstances for their behaviors but they realize behavior comes from one's conscious. Covey also explains that the other type of person is reactive. Reactive people are affected by their social as well as physical surroundings. This means that if the weather is bad, then it affects their behavior such as their attitude and performance.
    He also explains that all problems that are experienced by individuals fall into one of three categories, which are direct control, indirect control, or no control. The problems that are classified under direct control are the problems that involve our own behavior. The problems classified as indirect control encompasses problems that we can do nothing about. The problems classified as no control are those that we can do nothing about.
Habit 2 focuses on beginning with the end in mind. Covey wants the reader to envision his/her funeral. This may sound disheartening but his goal is to help you think about the words that you wish to be said about you; it can help the individual visualize what you value the most. To begin with the end simply means to start with your destination in mind. That gives an individual a sense of where he/she presently is in their life. One has to know where they are going to make sure that they are headed in the right direction. Covey also mentions that the most effective way to begin with the end is by developing a personal mission statement. After doing that, you should identify your center of attention. Are you spouse centered, money centered, family centered, etc. The he tells you depending on you core of interest, your foundation for security, guidance, and power.
Habit 3 is the practical fulfillment of Habits 1 and 2. Covey accentuates that Habits 1 and 2 are prerequisite to Habit 3. He states that an individual cannot become principle centered developing their own proactive nature; or without being aware of your paradigms; or the capability of envisioning the contribution that is yours to make. One must have an independent will. This is the ability to make decisions and to act in accordance with them.
     Habit 4 deals with the six paradigms of interaction, which are win/win, win/lose, lose/win, lose/lose, win, and win/win or no deal. Win/win is a situation in which everyone benefits something. It is not your way or my way; it is a better way. Win/lose declares that if I win then you lose. Simply put, I get my way; you don't get yours. Win/lose people usually use position, power, possessions, or personality to get their way. The win/lose type of person is the person that feels that if I lose; you win. People who feel this way are usually easy to please and find the strength of others intimidating. When two win/lose people get together both will lose resulting in a lose/lose situation. Both will try to get the upper end of the stick but in the end, neither gets anything. The person that simply thinks to win secures their own ends and leaves it up to others to secure theirs. The win/win or no deal person means that if there is not a suitable solution met that satisfies both parties then there is no agreement.
     Habit 5 deals with seeking means of effective communication. This habit deals with seeking first to understand. However, we usually seek first to be understood. Most people to not listen with the intent to understand but with the intent to reply. The act of listening to understand is referred to as empathic listening. That means you try to get into the person's frame of mind and think as they are thinking.
Habit 6 discuses combining all of the other habits to prepare us for the habit of synergy. Synergy means that the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Possessing all of the habits will benefit an individual more than possessing one or two of them. Synergism in communication allows you to open your mind to new possibilities or new options.
     Habit 7 involves surrounds the other habits because it is the habit that makes all of the others possible. It is amplifying the greatest asset you have which is yourself. It is renewing your physical, emotional, mental, and social nature. The physical scope involves caring for yourself effectively. Spiritual renewal will take more time. Our mental development comes through formal education. Quality literature in our field of study as well as other fields help to broaden our paradigms. Renewing the social dimension is not as time consuming as the others. We can start by our everyday interactions with people.
     Moving along the upward spiral requires us to continuously learn, commit, and do on higher planes. This is essential to keep progressing. At the end of each habit, there are application suggestions or exercises that help you become a more effective person. This is definitely not a quick fix it book. The concepts should be studied in order to be fully achieved. I think if you learn to use these 7 habits, it will change your life.
This is a must-have book.

The SPEED of Trust: The One Thing That Changes Everything

Trust can make things easier, and distrust can definitely make things much harder. You already know that. But do you know how to check out where you need to change in order to create more beneficial trust? The Speed of Trust can help those who need a template for such self-examination.

Mr. Stephen M. R. Covey is the son of Dr. Stephen R. Covey of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People fame. If you've read that famous book, you may remember young Stephen referred to by his father as the seven-year-old son who was asked to keep the yard "clean and green" and did neither at first. Dr. Covey writes the foreword for this book and refers to that example. Ms. Rebecca Merrill helped with the writing of Dr. Stephen R. Covey's book First Things First which was coauthored by Roger Merrill.

Trust is expressed by a paradigm that includes five waves of trust (self trust based on the principle of credibility, relationship trust based on the principle of proper behavior, organizational trust based on the principle of alignment, market trust based on the principle of reputation, and societal trust based on the principle of contribution). Most of the book is taken up with examining those five waves and their underlying principles. The core of the book comes, however, in the 13 behaviors that establish trust (talk straight, demonstrate respect, create transparency, right wrongs, show loyalty, get better, confront reality, clarify expectations, practice accountability, listen first, keep commitments, and extend trust). Each section of the book comes with ways to check on your performance and to create plans for improvement.

This book is by far the best development of the subject of creating and restoring trust that I have read. That makes the book an essential reference. I congratulate and appreciate the authors for tackling this important subject.

I would be remiss, however, in being a trustworthy reviewer if I didn't point out some weaknesses in the approach:

1. Some of the examples of trust and mistrust drawn from Mr. Covey's experiences aren't terribly satisfying to read. Perhaps the most jarring example is one of the early ones in the book that describes the distrust that the Franklin Quest people felt toward him after the company merged with Covey Leadership Center. Mr. Covey comes across as unbelievably naive for not having taken into account how the two cultures should mesh (if at all) in engineering the merger. That's a more fundamental lesson than the lack of trust point. In addition, he doesn't seem to realize that merely being the son of the company's founder would make many people who didn't know him skeptical of his qualifications and his talent. Having read about how naive Mr. Covey was in this situation undercut my confidence in his ability to address the subject of trust. But I did appreciate his willingness to share such a painful experience in his book.

2. Most of the examples that are cited that do not involve Mr. Covey's direct experience are very overused. They same examples have been used to prove excellence in many other dimensions. As a result, the book doesn't come alive as much as it might. The examples conjure up memories of other books and arguments rather than cleanly bringing across the authors' trust-related points.

3. The book's structure and style are pretty pedantic, but without the precision that an academic would bring to the subject. In most areas, the authors rely on your sense of what's right rather than giving you clear lines of what to do and what not to do. That's fine if you already have a well-defined sense of how trust is formed and re-established. But if you don't know the answers already because you haven't lived in that kind of an environment, the book will leave you with too little direction.

4. Ultimately, long sections of the book are very general and boring. The major exceptions are the examples drawn from Mr. Covey's own family. I found those examples to be fresh and interesting.

After you finish this book, I suggest that you think about those who have gained your trust and distrust. What did they do? Examining those personal examples will add a lot of depth to the general ideas presented here.
