<p>There are three components of <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/advisor-marketing-strategy-create-your-vision" target="_blank">success</a> in every area of your small business marketing plan: Your Inner Game, Your Game Plan and Your Outer Game. Most small business owners spend the majority of their time on their outer game, which includes the tactics and activity. While you need to spend time on your outer game, top producers know that as much as 80-90% of their success is dictated by their inner game. So we must also devote time and energy to creating a strong inner game to achieve the success we desire. Today, we will address your inner game!</p>
<p>In my last post, we discussed two components of your inner game in your <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/advisor-marketing-strateg-creating-your-mission-statement" target="_blank">small business marketing plan</a> – #1: Where will I be? and #2: What do I want? Hopefully you have taken time to answer these questions.</p>
<p>Today, we will dive into the next step– Small Business Marketing Inner Game Strategy #3: Develop a healthy Worth Barometer (Part 1).</p>
<p>In my 20+ years of research into the secrets of success, I’ve found that the most important aspect of long-term, sustainable achievement in your small business and life is a healthy “worth barometer.”</p>
<p>I coined this term, which is a measurement of a person’s self-esteem and beliefs, in my book, <em>The <a href="http://7pbook.com" target="_blank">7 Principles</a> of Becoming a Millionaire for Life: Powerful Lessons to Create Significant Wealth, Health &amp; Happiness.</em> Small business owners, service providers and advisors with high worth barometers have a great self-image: They are willing to persevere, even when things aren’t going their way.</p>

<p>On the other hand, <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/advisor-marketing-strateg-creating-your-mission-statement" target="_blank">small business owners</a>, service providers and advisors with low worth barometers don’t believe that they’re good enough and rarely sustain success over the long-term. Even if they make a million dollars or achieve something similarly spectacular in one area of their lives, they will typically lose it or sabotage their success by diminishing some other important aspect of their existence, like their health or relationships.</p>
<p>Fortunately, your worth barometer isn’t fixed. You can build it up by assessing your current level of self-esteem and make shifts in your internal belief system.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/advisor-marketing-strategy-create-your-vision" target="_blank">Small Business Marketing</a> Inner Game Strategy #1: Changing your belief system.<br />
</strong>Beliefs are powerful things. According to the author and philosopher James Allen, “You are truly where your thoughts have brought you. You will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.” Consequently, if you believe you deserve success in business, you’re more likely to get it.</p>
<p>But how do we change our beliefs? Sometimes they’re so ingrained in the way we live that we’re not even aware of them—or that they’re keeping us from achieving our <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/advisor-marketing-strateg-creating-your-mission-statement" target="_blank">small business goals</a>.</p>
<p>To get the results we desire, we must be open to changing them. Ask yourself, “Am I getting the <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/small-business-marketing-where-will-you-be" target="_blank">results</a> I want in my small business, my personal life, etc.?” If the answer is a resounding “Yes,” then you don’t have to change a thing. If the answer is “No,” then you need to take a hard look at your beliefs and the way they manifest themselves into your actions and behaviors.</p>
<p>As Albert Einstein so eloquently pointed out, wanting a different result yet continuing to do the same thing in your small business or life is insanity. There are a lot of people that want success in their small business, for example, and yet they continue to avoid completing their <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/advisor-marketing-strateg-creating-your-mission-statement" target="_blank">HVFDAs</a> (high value fixed daily activities) or their IPAs (income producing activities). Insanity indeed!</p>
<p>If you want to achieve a certain <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/advisor-marketing-strategy-create-your-vision" target="_blank">small business goal</a> but it’s been elusive, you need to identify the beliefs and behaviors that are getting in your way. Do this in every aspect of your life—such as your career, relationships, health, community and finances. Write down the beliefs and behaviors that are working and what beliefs and behaviors you need to change. Be brutally honest with yourself. It may be difficult or scary to let go of something you’ve held so dear for so long, but perseverance will be worth it.</p>
<p>Some of the latest brain research shows that we can change our <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/small-business-marketing-where-will-you-be" target="_blank">beliefs</a> through a combination of self-talk, visualization, education, coaching and practice. It may take a little time, but you’ll be amazed at the results. I can tell you that a common trait among multi-millionaires, most of which are small business owners, is that they believe with ever fiber of their being that their dreams are real and attainable. Even when others tell them that they’re crazy, they continue to follow their purpose and passion with great faith.</p>
<p>Scientific studies confirm that beliefs matter more than the current reality of a given situation. For example, many people who miraculously overcome illness do so because they simply believe in their treatments with every fiber of their being. Prayer, chemo, acupuncture—in many respects they are all the same if the belief in them is strong enough.</p>

</strong>One of the most important questions in your small business marketing plan is to determine where you will be if you keep doing what you are doing.</p>
<p>My good friend Judy Willodson always asks potential clients, <span id="more-1408"></span>“If you continue doing what you are doing, where will you be in 5 years?” Take some quiet time to answer this question and decide what you really want. Make sure and answer this question for all areas including your <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/financial-advisor-marketing-setting-smart-goals" target="_blank">small business</a>, finances, personally etc.</p>
<p>In my opinion, this question and the answer are two key success factors to a successful <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/advisor-marketing-blueprint" target="_blank">small business marketing</a> plan (especially if you do something to ensure you’ll end up where you want to be in 5 years!) After all if your marketing plan isn&#8217;t going to take you and your small business where you want to go, of what value is it?</p>

It makes sense that if we want to achieve a goal or dream, we must first decide what we want. And yet too often small business owners do not know what they want. Many know what they don’t want, but ask them what they do want and they’ll respond, “That’s a great question.” It wouldn’t be so concerning but if we don&#8217;t know what we want, how can we create a small business marketing plan to get us there?</p>
<p>The stakes of not knowing that answer can prove devastating to our <a href="http://milliondollarmarketingpractices.com/blog/financial-advisor-marketing-and-business-plan-for-2011" target="_blank">small business success</a> and dramatically reduce our odds of achieving what we desire. So we must take time to find the answer.</p>
<p>A great way to discover what you really want is to spend time each day envisioning your ideal future, personally as well as professionally. Ideally find a location that is quiet such as in nature or a room without distractions. Then close your eyes, ask what would my ideal life and business look like and then imagine the possibilities. There is no right or wrong so dream big.</p>

This strategy provides insight for getting answers to tough questions, as well as releasing mental blocks and core beliefs. It consists of writing the question with your dominant hand and then answering it with your non-dominant hand.</p>

Take time to determine what you want in every aspect of your personal and professional life such as career, spiritual, financial, physical, family, relationships and community.</p>
