After all the rainy days it was a relief to find the Saturday Kiosque milonga in an enthusiastic summer setting. The effect on the dancers was noticeable: sweaty smiles and an empty bar. Here are some pictures:

Wednesday saw the visit of Ozgur Demir and Marina Marques in Tangobar. They gave a demo with some acrobatic moves and a very well received milonga.

This was also the debut of DJ Daniel Rossi, a.k.a. “he who makes people dance with excellent music on a itsy-bitsy iPod nano“.

Even when it’s raining a bit, the kiosk in the park remains an idyllic place to spend a Saturday afternoon delight milonga. We had invited DJ Pieter for the first time and he surprised us in the best possible way.

Tuesday tango in Brussels: Floreo

There used to be only one day in the week where there was no regular practica/milonga in Brussels: Tuesdays. But this is no longer the case, the void has been filled by the weekly milonga in the Floreo, in the Saint-Géry area. It’s a small cosy bar with just enough space to dance and to have a drink. Give it a try!

Paula & Pablo @ Tango Bar

Tango Bar has a busy week: it started on Sunday with the invitation of Paula Rubin and Pablo Alvarez. This couple will also be at the Brussels Tango Festival and came to show us their, at time spectacular, tango style.

Sebastian & Andrea @ Patio de tango

This Thursday, the Patio de Tango welcomed two exceptional maestros to the milonga: the Argentinians Sebastian Misse and Andrea Reyero came over from Paris to give a demo.

There was a big crowd for this event and the demo was very well received.

DJ Mala was also in good shape and played a series of wonderful tandas.

All in all, a top evening!

Guess who had the honour of appearing in the tango magazine La Cadena, the reference for tango in the Netherlands & Belgium? I was interviewed by Karin Venverloo about how I started taking pictures and dancing, what I like about it, …

It’s written in Dutch, so if you can read in Dutch, check out the PDF: Aan de rand van de tango. The La Cadena magazine is published monthly and writes about all aspects of tango: the teachers, the music, the experience. Jan Dirk and Ina have been using my pictures for over two years now, and every now and then I make the cover page. Tango and football

You might have noticed, there is some football competition for the moment, and one of the favorites is Argentina (well, certainly if you ask the argentinians). Since Argentina is also known for something else, they made a promo video combining both. For those who have attended the Brussels festival the last years, the dancer is indeed Dana Frigoli.

Milonga @ Kiosque 2010 coming up!

It’s that time of the year again! Dirk and me continue Olivier’s initiative of organizing open-air milongas in the kiosque of the Parc de Bruxelles / Warandepark. This year, they start on July 10th, and from then on every 2 weeks until the last one, on September 4th. We start at 17h and continue dancing until 23h. Drinks are available on site. DJs wil be Dirk and Nina (and maybe some guest appearance).

Hope to see you all at the kiosque this summer!

La Cantante launch party

La Cantante de Tango is now on the screens (in Brussels: Vendome, Antwerp: Cartoon’s, Gent: Sphinx, Liege: Sauveniere, Namur: Cameo2). I was at the avant-premiere and the milonga afterwards at the Bouche-à-Oreille.

Three good reasons to see the movie:

the music: all the songs Helena (Eugenia) sings in the movie are recorded live, no tricks, no dubbing and it makes the music so real you can almost touch it.
the images: Diego tells the story with beautiful images: as if every scene was painted by hand so it would be perfect. The streets of Buenos Aires, the beach at Boulogne, the theatres …
the dancers: the scenes recorded at Nosotros are filled with faces you know. We know you’re curious, so go check them out.

200 years of Argentinian Independence

Today 25 May is the day the Argentinians celebrate “Revolucion de Mayo“ or their indepence day. This cannot go unnoticed here in Belgium.

In Brussels there is a 4-day event “Argentina Festival” (Espace Senghor), with on Friday a concert by Orquesta Tipica Misteriosa Buenos Aires, followed by a milonga. On Saturday there are movies and on Sunday there’s a big BBQ (‘asado‘).

And in Liège La Mi’Lune organizes on Saturday the “Milonga de la Independencia” with the orchestra Tango Tinto & Sergio Gobi and a demo by Adrian and Amanda.

Who are Adrian & Amanda Costa?

“Specialists of the Villa Urquiza Style, their tango rimes with simplicity, elegance of the abrazo, of the walk, a unique interpretation of musicality. Watching them is living their tango full of emotions, feelings and pleasure; and it is also visualising the music and its instruments. Rather than simply teaching, they wish to transmist their passion and share their talents. “

They will give some workshops in both Brussels at the Villa Urquiza School (28 May) and Liège at La Mi’Lune (29 and 30 May).

Bruno & Mariangeles came to give a demo at the Tangueria. They’re a nice dance couple to see (check the video below) and their three dances were much appreciated. It was also nice for me to be back in the Tangueria, it had been a while.

Finally on the screens: La Cantante de Tango

A lot of Belgian tango dancers participated in the filming of Diego’s La Cantante de Tango in March 2008 and they will be happy to know that the movie will finally come to the big screen here in Belgium!

The release date is Wednesday June 2, in the Vendome in Brussels, and also in Liège, Namur, Gent & Antwerp. Did your slick tango moves in the Nosotros milonga scene survive the rigorous editing? Go check it out!

Tango Antwerp Festival 2010: 21-24 May

It’s been a while since there was a real big tango festival in Antwerp, but next month there will be a special one: “Tribute to Osvaldo Zotto – Tango Antwerp Festival 2010“.

As you can see from the name, the festival has been dedicated to the recently deceased and much loved Osvaldo Zotto, who was supposed to perform at the festival. Instead, the festival opens with a solo from Gisele Avanzi, his last dance partner, and will also feature maestros like Roberto Herrera, Alejandra Mantiñan, Aoniken Quiroga, Frank Obregón, Jenny Gil, Anibal Lautaro, Valeria Maside, Mariano & Cosima Dias Campos, Lautaro Cancela and Lucila Segura. Music from the well-known orchestras Ensemble Hyperion, Tango 02, Mabel Gonzalez & Trio Herman Ruis and the DJs Felix Picerna, Francesco El Actor (Ar), Nettie & El Karangatang (NL).
Put it in your agendas: Friday May 21st until Monday May 24th, it’s festival time in Antwerp!
