Pol Van Assche started the non-profit organisation Polariteit in November 1989.Â He was one of the first persons to promote tango in Belgium.

Pol was born 15 dec 1948 in Bujumbura and came to Belgium with his family when he was 11 years old. In December 1988 he organised a birthday party in the ChÃ¢teau de Fontaine that was themed around tango and had 140 participants. People asked him there where they could take tango lessons.

Pol himself then took classes in Argentine tango with the Dutch teachers Wouter Brave and Martine Berghuijs who founded the Amsterdamse tangoschool and were one of the first promoters of Argentine tango in Europe. They were students of Antonio Todaro. Pol himself would since December 1990 travel 20 times to Buenos Aires and 5 times to Montevideo to study tango. His most influential teachers were Antonio Todaro, Pepito Avellaneda and Ernesto Carmona. He would also organise holidays to Buenos Aires as a tour leader.

On December 15, 1989 he organised the first Noche de la PasiÃ³n in Ghent, which was a yearly event for Argentine tango, Cuban salsa and other Latin dances. At its peak, 5000 people attended the Noche de la PasiÃ³n.

When Pol served his conscription, he teared his meniscus in a bad maneuver and later in life got troubles because of this in his knee. He had to be operated and doctors had to saw through his leg. He had been in a wheelchair for a while and needed to wear a metal construction under his knee for years. Because of his experience, he became an ambassador for Handicap International.

Polariteit rented a dance floor in Verkortingstraat 55, 9040 Gent for 30 years. There was a milonga every Friday, also on holidays and twice per month on Sunday. This Friday, December 22nd will be the last milonga of Polariteit at this location, because the costs to continue there have become too high. Polariteit will keep giving tango classes at another location and they will also keep organising a milonga at another location, but there will not be a milonga anymore every Friday of the week.

Especially people who danced in Ghent have known the dance floor in Ghent and it is sad that after 30 years it disappears.Â There are a lot of great memories there !

Featuring the works of Piazzolla and Rovira, the Belgian group SONICO explores the innovative forms of tango-ballet music composed at the origins of avant-garde tango. Soon we will be playing at home: Bozar gets the premiere on 19 January 2024 followed by a release tour!

I have been thinking about it for a while : an app for www.milonga.be and it’s finally there !
First on Android, but don’t worry iPhone users, there might be something coming for you really soon too !

Let me tell you : it took hard word, learning and patience to make it. It’s not free, but I hope the price won’t refrain you, I kept it as low as possible. The website will of course remain free.

What’s in it ? At the moment, your tango events, milongas and workshops, but I have more ideas to come and they will be available to you automatically with every updates, as well as bugfixes and corrections. And let me know if you see something weird in the app : milonga@milonga.be

Moira Castellano in Brussels (9/10/11 June)

She is in Belgium ! We have the chance to receive Moira Castellano in our beautiful country.

Born in Diamante, Province of Entre RÃos.Â At the age of 5, Moira started her studies of Classical and Spanish dances. She graduated in psychology from the Universidad Nacional de Rosario. At the age of 21, she takes her first class of tango with Orlando Paiva. Later on, she moves to Buenos Aires to study with the most prestigious teachers of the time: Eduardo Arquimbao, Roberto Herrera and Vanina Bilous, Gabriel Angio and Natalia Games, Gustavo Naveira, Fabian Salas, and others. From the beginnings of 2000, she lived in Paris where she danced with Quatre Arts company, directed by Catherine Berbesou, fusing contemporary dance with tango ! Later with Gaston Torelli, she participated in festivals in the US, Asia and Europe.

At present, she attends some of the biggest national and international festivals with her partner Javier RodrÃguez.Â Their experience and the quality of their dancing and teaching make them one the most renowned couples today.

Occasionally, she also gives shows and classes with Mariano Chicho Frumboli, another acclaimed dancer, with whom she has embarked on an artistic research into tango and theatre, opening space for new ways of expression.

Enjoy tango outdoors on the wooden dance floor in the central courtyard, with the beautiful day with 24Â° temperature.

Besides, you are still in time to sign up to enjoy a true Argentine experience, with the typical Argentinean berbecue !

Immerse yourself completely in the fascinating Argentinean culture, with live music, passionate tango, good wine and the traditional barbecue.

It will be a succulent rack of beef, cooked on stakes on the grill for more than 6 hs, accompanied by chorizo and blood sausage, salad and dessert, plus a litre of wine for each guest and also a soft drink.
