A Personal Note on the Classes:

I choose to skip the classes. No offense intended.

How many Lessons do you need to take to satisfy a woman on the Tango floor?

Whatever that number is, I've exceeded it. I've taken enough classes. Thank you.

I don't want to take any more. My glass is full. Gracias.

For me the answer is no more classes - no more lessons, no more privates, no more practice for no more years.

I'm 72 years old. I have no fire in the belly for the classes. I have gas in the belly! LOL.
Still. I'm not dead yet. I'm ambulatory. I can still walk.

The old American Indian Mantra is

"If you can talk,

you can sing.

If you can walk,

you can dance."

I love to dance.

Just not for show.

My dance is for my Partner,

no one else.

So, I'll let others have the Instructors. I’ll watch from my chair. Maybe memorialize the event with a foto. But I’ll skip the classes. Been there. Done that. I've taken lots of Tango Classes.

Can't say that I've Graduated. But I've survived. I've moved on. I'm not a Tango Student. I'm a Tango Dancer. I have taken all the classes that I want to take. Gracias.

I understand that the Instructors are very good and that their classes are very good.

Just not for me. Not now.

Orange marmalade for the toast and clover honey for the yogurt.

Notes: The Practica was a great disappointment. I should have skipped it like I skipped the classes. I didn't want to practice. I just wanted to dance. The Followers didn't want to dance. They wanted to practice, but not with me. They wanted to practice with the Instructors who were there for them. They were on their game and they wanted to improve it. I don't give a shit about my game. I just want to dance.

Dessert - Mango and lime sorbet. Superb!
Notes: Kind of backed into this restaurant as a last resort because everything else was closed. So glad I did. First class! $$$. Worth every penny!

My first dance is with Cherie to a Tango by Miguel Calo. Calo is the best! But I never danced with her to Calo in Buenos Aires because she saved all those dances for Ruben.

Then dance with Eunha of Tango Angeles.

So worth the long drive from Florida!

Who could possibly bring me back to dance in New Orleans? Who dat? Cherie Magnus from Los Angeles! So I break my long self imposed exile and dance again at Ector’s fine Milonga. It's a miracle!

Cherie remembers me. She asks where we met? Was it San Miguel de Allende? No. It was Denver. We met at The Mercury Cafe in Denver, Colorado a long time ago. Before we danced in Mexico. Before she went to Buenos Aires as an Ex Pat. Before she knew how to blog. Before she met Ruben. Before she became world famous. Before I became her big brother.

Dance with Marta from Argentina. She says she likes to go to the Theater when she is in Buenos Aires. I’ve only been once: Julio Boca at Theatre Colon so many years ago but so unforgettable.

Last dance with Cherie. One before Juan Antonio plays La Cumpsrsita. We are the last ones standing besides Lorena and Warren of course. You know it's time to go when Ector starts folding and stacking the tables.

Cherie and Eunha call their Uber Prius.

Hugs goodnight. I travel back to my cheap motel in Slidell to rest and recuperate on my Tango high!

Dancing with Elizabeth to Enrique Rodriguez’s orchestra. How do I know? I ask the DJ. Why? Rodriguez’s signature ending is missing the last note. Typically the Tango ends with "bum bum." But, alas, Rodriguez only gives us one "bum." Bummer!

Couldn't remember where Jeanie and I had danced. She gently reminded me that we had danced in Destin, FL!

Last dance with Ljuba. She says, “I feel safe with you. You’re solid. You’ve got my back… and my front.” Now I’m jinxed. So, of course, I stumble. But we don't fall!

Hola Poor K,

Life is short. You don’t have time to dance with everybody. You must choose. How you decide is up to you. The Tango is very personal. When you say YES to someone that YES may mean a NO to someone else.

You seek joy at the Milonga. You try to avoid pain and embarrassment. But sometimes the pain is self-inflicted. As an Argentine Man I come with my macho charisma. But underneath that bold facade we Argentine Men have a frail and fragile ego. Of course our Women crush our ego all the time with no regrets whatsoever. It comes with the Tango territory. They know that the Tango is theirs. They own it. Their Men should be so thankful to find a dance with them. So our Tango is brutal as well as sublime. But you can put up with a lot of Tango hell to enjoy the peak experience of Tango heaven.

I can’t speak for others, but I know when I don’t want to dance with her again forever. For example:

When she snuffs out the eternal flame of love by pissing on it with cold precision, then I know.
When she rejects you by looking away or leaves with her dreaded “gracias,” then I know.
When you give her your best dance but she has nothing to give you in return, then I know.
If she doesn't hear you or hear the music, then I know.
If she talks on her phone or talks with her friends instead of looking your way, then I know.
If she is already taken by another, then I know.
If she doesn't have a warm solid but light embrace, then I know.
If she doesn't respect you or herself or the dance, then I know.
If she stinks, then I know.
If she offers you unsolicited criticism between dances at the Milonga, then I know.

So from these examples you may think that I’m an “asshole!” Yes?

Watch ángel susurrante shift into slow mo when he dances for Alicia.

Exquisite joyful dances with Maria and Meredith, my favorite partners from a former life. Each had taken a multi-year Tango break to have and raise their two babies. Now, to my delight, they're back dancing the Argentine Tango without having skipped a beat. You can't ever forget it. It's like riding a bicycle but different. Last dance with Maria.

Reach a detente with Rachel after a long dry spell. Lamely attribute my overture to the new spirit of Cuban reconciliation. Come to find out that she doesn't hate me afterall. She's cooled off to the point of where she's just totally indifferent. At least enough to suffer dancing a Tango Vals Tanda with me.

Almost blew the whole detente deal when Sarah sat down on the bench next to me. When I asked if she had room, she said, "Plenty for one cheek." It's all about the optics in my minds eye.

Wonder if I could possibly reach detente with all the other women who hate me. Especially those in Atlanta? No. No FN way! Why would you ever want to dance with someone who hates you?

And this notorious Tango blog wouldn't be true without both love and hate.

Cathy arrives just in time to dance "Tango to Evora." I tell her that I had arranged for the DJ to play it as soon as she arrived. Later dance "La Cumparsita" with Cathy.

Regrets: One decline by a French woman. To her credit she comes over to me and explains that she needs some time to rest. Then she immediately accepts a dance from Gustavo. WTF? Gustavo must have regenerative power like the Energizer Bunny? Gustavo looks her way and ZAP she's rested and ready to go again!

The floorcraft sucks. No respect. No courtesy. Leaders dance backwards blindly. One SOB passes me on the right while I'm in the outside lane.

Some of the Performers showboat in the social line of dance. I guess they only know how to dance for show. They should be dancing in the Center.

Neil's Ugly Little Secret:

Since May 2015 I've been on Meds for cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. Drug side effects include "loss of balance when walking."

The ability to walk balanced is a basic requisite for dancing the Tango. Yet, yours truly, had ignored that fact with impunity because the reality is that I don't want to accept it.

Last night when I crashed God was telling me that I have no choice. Sorry about that. I shouldn't be dancing. It's not safe. I should accept that fact graciously.

I'm a 71 year old man, disabled veteran with cardiovascular disease who can't walk a balanced walk. It's time to give up the Tango and walk with a cane.

So, adios NOLA. Adios Tango.

Final Note:

I've always said that as a Milonguero I wanted to die dancing in a Tango Bar in Buenos Aires.

But I have to settle for dying alive by hitting the floor with a jole blon. No one was hurt physically. But I didn't survive. Even though I could count the two middle fingers that Valorie put in my face. I left walking alone on my own two feet without saying good bye as is my custom.

Arrived home safe and sound in Pensacola at 4 AM.

It wasn't a very good night for Tango in NOLA.

It was my last Tango in NOLA.

Adios amigos.

My sincerest apologies to Melinda and everyone else.

I am so sorry.

Arm wrestle with another woman over the position of her rt arm. I lose. If she wants to stick her elbow out, she can ~~damn well~~ stick it!

What? Her embrace is perfect but her rt arm is way out in rt field. Milonguero Style 101 - Elbows point to the floor. Elbows out is rude, dangerous and unacceptable on a crowded floor unless you're playing basketball. Her rt arm is out. So I try to bring her arm in but not a word 'cause I don't teach at a Milonga. I try but she doesn't get it. Instead, she resists and bristles. It's all my fault.

She asks, "What's up with the arm?"

I say, "Give me a hug."

She says, "I don't want to give you a hug. I want to dance."

I say, "gracias."

And that's that.

The embrace is the core, the essence, the alpha and omega of the milonguero style of dance. If you can hug, you can dance. When you hug, you're arm is not out in rt field. Starting with a hug is the easiest and most important way to re-set the connection.

~~The moral to this story is~~ if you're partner doesn't get it, you can't fix it during La Milonga. You smile, let go and dance with another.

Leave early at 1:30 AM.

Dodge the drunks, druggies, derelicts, homeless, gays, black youth rapping gangstas, twerking hoes, tourists, travelers and revelers who comprise the colorful late nightlife on the Streets of New Orleans in the French Quarter.

Not feeling very safe walking around the block from the hotel to the parking garage at 2 AM in the morning. Not recommended for an unescorted Lady. Beautiful fearless ~~ball-busting~~ NOLA women may beg to differ.

Only heard one Milonga. Nyron was hovering over Linda so I couldn't ask her. P.O. at Kathy so I couldn't ask her. Valorie was dancing with Eli so I couldn't ask her. So I danced NO Milonga with NO body.

I tripped and almost fell. I've never fallen before. Never dropped a woman. But maybe I'm getting too old to Tango?

One woman hangs on me and my shoulder thinking that she's dancing like a Milonguera. Milongueras are light, not heavy. Her embrace could be fine for a true Milonguero because true Milongueros are short. But it doesn't work for a tall American Milonguero like me. The weight of her arm hanging on me is a heavy drag and she's reluctant to adjust it.

Got a decline that I wasn't expecting. Stung hard. So disappointed that I left early. I will not dance with her again!

Because I left early, I took no fotos.

The floorcraft sucked causing friction and altercation. At least half the dancers on the floor need to take the floorcraft class.

NO ONE UNDERSTANDS OR CARES THAT DANCING EXPANSIVELY ON A CROWDED FLOOR IS RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL AND DANGEROUS.

Not even some of the Teachers.

It's more fun to showboat on the river than to give the woman a good safe dance.

Not sure the Followers understand how bad it is. If they're good, they're dancing with their eyes closed and see and know nothing. The Leaders are too proud to admit that they crash into anyone.

Tango is a contact sport. Everyone crashes from time-to-time.

But like on the highway, a safe and courteous driver adjusts to the driving conditions. It's the reckless drivers who don't.

It seems that he was at a different event. Yes -- it was crowded. Yes -- people were expansive. But I attribute that to the celebratory nature of the event. I think he broadbrushed his particular experience. His views are valid but there are other views. I had a swimmingly good time. I danced with the best as well as beginners. I had a good drink and the calamari. I got squeezed in and also was protected by my partner. I think it was great fun and not the colossal downer that most tango events tend to be. Notes: No Cathy: I didn't have a date. Just me and the Bulls. Good seats. A Florida Cracker next to real Texans. I'm wearing wrinkled khaki jeans, docksiders with no socks, A Columbia Performance Fishing Gear (PFG) shirt and a Georgia Tech Baseball Cap. The real Texans wear starched Blue Jeans, starched White Dress Shirts, Texas Big Rodeo Belt Buckles, shined Cowboy Boots and fine Stetson Hats. I remember Blake Shelton saying that he never trusts a man who doesn't wear socks. Don't feel comfortable enough to take pictures. The Bulls Win. But they pick a Champion Bull Rider by the luck of the draw EVEN THOUGH THERE AREN'T ANY REAL WINNERS except THE BULLS! Their rationale is - you got to have a Champion!
Best part of the Rodeo was the Kids riding Sheep. All the Kids got Trophies.

I watch Claire dance with Nyron. They are remarkable. Looks like they are the same height. I ask Nyron how tall he is and he says 6'3". Claire must be 6' with 3 inch heels. Later I dance a milonga with her. It's so good that I dance with no one else afterwards! Leave at 3 AM on a tango high.

I have come this long way from Florida to Atlanta for Alicia Pons because I like her.

I try to open little doors for people to go out, with the feeling, with the embrace. But not open the doors to the outside, open the doors to the inside... if you open the door [inwards] you are ready to receive another heart.

12:30 - 2 PM - Workshop II (Tango)
Dancing to the style of different orchestras.
Changes of speed and direction. Pauses, walks and salidas.

Alicia reviews topics from Friday's Workshop I (Tango)
All levels. Dancing for each other in the space we share. Deep connection with the partner, floor and music.

Connection

The connection is important. Without it there is no way to communicate. We may think of a good connection as firm, solid and consistent. We practice with a tennis ball between us that we don't want to drop.

Alicia has other images. She offers the image of soft hands clasped. She offers the image of sharing the blanket with your partner that is wrapped around your shoulders.

These are simple but advanced notions. You want to be solid. But you want to be soft. You want to be firm. But you don't want to be pushy. You want to be gentle. But not invasive. You want to give of yourself. But not take from your partner.

Alicia describes some of her tango values.

Generosity

One value is to be generous. The essence of the Milonguero style is that you want to give your partner the experience of a good dance. It's not about finishing first. It's not about winning first prize. It's not about show time. It's not about you. It's not about the dance. It's about the feelings. You want to give to your partner. You want to bring the joy of the dance to her so that she will feel that joy. It's about giving. It's about being generous. It's about being open. How do you teach someone how to be generous when they're not? A simple value but this notion is not so easily described or discovered without imagery that women understand so intuitively while men stay so clueless and in the dark.

Alicia says, "Open your heart!"

The women say, YES.

The men say, "Do what?"

Generous. Be nice. Hold her warmly. Focus on her. Give her a warm embrace. Give her your undivided attention. Give her positive regard. Dance like you want to be dancing with her.
Dance like you are dancing for her and her alone. Show her that you care. Breathe. Listen to the music. Feel the music. Share what you feel with her.

If you are generous and give of yourself, your partner will give to you. The giving and receiving is reciprocal.

The notion of a follower who gives to her lead is simple but advanced. This quality distinguished the advanced dancer from the beginner and la porteña from la tourista.

It's the notion of an active / pro-active follower. How do turn a passive follower into an active one? How do you give back to your lead? Easy to say. But not so easy to do.

This quality may only come with years of dancing. It may only come in Buenos Aires. It may only come when you least expect it like la mariposa.

Respect

Another value is respect. Respect your partner. Respect yourself. Respect the dance and it's traditions. Respect other dancers on the floor. Embrace all the other couples. You're not dancing for yourself. You're dancing for your partner and with all the other couples.

A Milonguero Style Tango Encuentro/ A mini tango workshop weekend / A Tango weekend for Milongueros by Milongueros / Every day! A tango class followed by a practica followed by a Milonga.

Classes focused on those who wanted to improve their technique with Milonguero style tango. No matter what style of Argentine Tango that you enjoy, you benefited from learning the authentic social dance the way it's danced in the clubs of Buenos Aires.

Experienced Milonguero style dancers from different parts the country converged on the Great Port City of the Great State of Alabama and shared their dance with the locals from the Great Gulf Coast.

Our hope was modest: To help you find the best dance you've ever had! To help you enjoy the special feeling of the authentic Milonguero style of dance. To give you a taste of the joy and frustration of getting a dance with a cabeceo. To give everyone a chance to dress up in their elegant best for The Saturday Night Milonga with music from the very best DJ who we could find. We hoped that this weekend would be special and unforgettable! It was.

Notes:

The doors to the balcony are open with a beautiful night view of The Big Easy. It's so hot and muggy that the floor is sticky making pivots difficult. First dance with Eli. Don't sit down with her because I've been sitting in my Truck for hours. I have no reserved table that I can call my very own. Elena bristles when I ask her to leave her glasses on the table. Dora wants me to take a class so I'll know how to dance. I tell her that my glass is full. She asks, "What does that mean?"
