Heather suffered for months not knowing what was wrong when symptoms of muscle fatigue and brain fog plagued her. Fifteen doctors later and finally a diagnosis of Lyme Disease gave her the peace of mind she needed. Heather is almost fully recovered and her story is inspiring.

Heather won our "Worthy Revolution" giveaway last year and we have been planning her make-over experience since then. Read up on the first part of her make-over story here...

We had a custom gown made to fit her from a bolt of fabric that was gathering dust. Designed by Mimika and created by Scarlett Plus boutique, it perfectly embodies her embracing her inner beauty. Withe the delicious French inspired macarons, it's the styling of Les Miserables but with the heart of Joan of Arc!

Watch as she retells her journey from depression to finding her confidence again.

I love my iPad. Everyone in my family does too and it's a tug of war to see who gets to play with it first. But to me it's not for playing games, rather it's one of the best sales tools that will actually MAKE me money in my photography business. I hear from other photographer's all the time...

"I can't do in person sales because I don't have a dedicated studio",
"I don't have the time to meet with clients again for the sales appointment",
"My clients live far away and don't want to travel back to see me for the sales session",
"I don't like selling".

Well, let me tell you those are just excuses, and here is why....(oh and please excuse the wardrobe malfunction, a case of I need a wardrobe stylist!).

The wonderful talents of Ariana Farleni have brought us this revolutionary mobile application called the Shoot N Sell App that is so easy to use my 2 year old knows how to work it.

This is perfect for the photographer who doesn't have a 'studio' to meet with clients as the iPad can be taken on location to the clients own home. The advantage of conducting sales sessions in the clients home is that you provide the service for them thereby making the decisions much easier, and the sale much higher. It allows photographers to take images of a client's actual room and show them visually what their art work will look like. It takes away all the guess work and imagination of trying to figure out scale and how a portrait will look hung on a wall.

Secondly, if you service clients who travel a distance to come for their photo session, there is no reason why you can't use the application to conduct a virtual sales session. Tip: have the client email you photos of their rooms, you import them into the software and create the collages, then you email them back the layouts. Easy as pie! You can also do a Skype sale session with the software too.

If you don't find use for the mobile app, there is always the option of purchasing Ariana's real room interiors from the Photographer's Wall Display Guides

I use the room view features ALL the time and it always impresses my clients when they see a neatly decorated room with their fabulous images on the walls. At a minimum, purchase the room views and create your client's wall ideas in Photoshop then simply email then for approval.

<target_blank a href="https://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?cl=124955&c=ib&aff=236608">

You see no matter if you're a photographer who runs a big studio or you're a one woman/man show, you can tuck your iPad under your arm and take your sales tool where ever you go. Voila!

Go ahead and order it now on iTunes, you'll be so glad that you did.

Have you ever wondered how to squeeze a 40 hour week into 20 hours a week? Does your never ending to-do list seem to keep adding up instead of whittling down? Do you suffer from the 'working mothers guilt' of feeling guilty when you're working away from your kids, and guilty when you're with your kids that you're not getting enough work done?

Well sugar let me tell you this, it's been my life's story since I first started my photography business AND had a baby 14 years ago. Crazy stuff I know! Why do we do it to ourselves? We're trying to be "Wonder Woman" to everyone and yet it feels like we are failing ourselves instead.

I completely understand how it feels when we think we're not being the best mommy, wife and entrepreneur and time is limiting. Being a solopreneur can be very lonely at times, and it's hard to stay motivated when there are so many things to juggle. There is a lot of noise in my head!

I'm sure there are many of us mompreneurs who feel the same way, we think we are lone rangers who have to battle through it all. Enough with the guilt, let's have a plan and stick to it!

What I have found is that there are three keys to helping me stay ahead so I don't lose my marbles...

Time blocking...
Forget about the multi-tasking monster, our brains are wired for focus. We can be far more productive when we switch off the pings of email notifications, get off Facebook and concentrate on just one thing at a time. I can't live without my Google Calendar and I've forced myself to block out chunks of time to get the same jobs done at once. For example, on Tuesday mornings I block off 2 hours for writing and I force myself to close down all distractions and get as much done in those 2 hours. Believe me it ain't easy! I'm attracted to nice shiny new things so completing tasks for me is quite an internal battle. An important part of time blocking is sticking with your schedule so if a client asks for an appointment on Tuesday mornings, I politely offer them an alternative. I've found that I can be my most creative when I schedule 1 or 2 photo sessions back to back while I'm in the creative 'zone'. It's super hard to switch from right brain creative to left brain analytical for admin or selling tasks if you divide your day in so many directions. Give it a try and tell me if it works for you.

Delegating...
We've heard the saying "just because you can doesn't mean you should" and this is so very true. We start our businesses trying to do all things and be all things, and the control freak in us takes over. I see this all the time with photographers who want to have all their fingers in all the pies of their business, especially when it comes to retouching. If you're a Photoshop nut then sure, go ahead and spend hours upon hours perfecting your images. But hey, I'm a little old school in that I believe that images should be shot correctly the first time (Photoshop should be for touch ups not complete make-overs). Most often I've found we perform the same tasks, actions and processes to create our signature 'look' or style, so surely we can delegate these monotonous tasks to someone who costs less? Think about it... what do you charge per hour for your time? Believe me, you can't afford NOT to pay someone else LESS per hour than what you're worth. I found a graphic design student through my local Arts College and I was so relieved to hand over my retouching to her. I was able to charge more for my services, spend more time on things that actually MADE me money (like shooting and marketing), and I was a much happier bunny not having to spend every night until 1am on the computer. Let yourself go... try it you won't look back.

Baby sitter....
My youngest is coming up to turning 3 years old and the past 3 years of the baby/toddler years have been some of the hardest I've had since I first started my business. My mommy heart would constantly pull me toward being mommy, but my head would remind me that I built a business I loved and had obligations to meet. I couldn't just walk away. The only saving grace was having a baby sitter (my sweet sister-in-law) to help me out on the days I had to see clients. This way I could concentrate on work during those hours without interruptions and not feel I was neglecting my baby. Believe me the guilt racked me constantly, but I had to come to terms with the fact I was doing the best job I could do. The quality time we had together after the clients had left and the computer was off I will always treasure. Yes I made mistakes, but having the peace of mind that someone was taking care of my baby allowed me to focus and zoom through tasks at lightning speed.

Oh I forgot to mention that being a working mom means everything is done at double speed. We know how to get things done no faffing or dilly daddling! Ready, set, go!

Tell me your tips for managing a crazy schedule? What have you found has been the most useful?

If you liked this content please share and tell your friends, you just might make someone's day!!!

Every woman does it. We all doubt our worth, question whether we are good enough, pretty enough, thin enough. Why do we do it to ourselves? There is no perfect anything so we may as well make peace with what God blessed us with and celebrate it!

What I loved the most about Jenn is seeing her grow from a shy, unassuming soccer mom to a confident vixen! We had an absolute blast “playing dress up” and creating a character for her to be for her make-over photo shoot. From the wardrobe planning, the styling, hair and make-up, posing and experience we created memories for Jenn to remember on ‘those days’ that she doesn’t feel so pretty. We all have ‘those days’ and it’s so important to remind ourselves that even though we may not find perfection we can remember just how worthy we are!

Listen and watch as Jenn describes her journey of self discovery. Embracing her inner Goddess, realizing she’s beautiful and celebrating her gorgeous self!

Did you know that YouTube is the second biggest traffic generator after Google? The other goodie is that Google now owns YouTube which means they’re playing favorites. This is a good thing for creating an online marketing strategy using both channels to drive mega amounts of traffic to a website.

This is 2013 and the days of newspaper ads are long gone, especially for those like us in the visual photography industry. The old adage “a picture tells a thousand words” can now be what I call “a talking picture tells ten thousand words”.

So what does this mean for you? Well, it means you need to think about using this behemoth of eyeballs for your benefit. As a photographer it sounds like a no brainer, we are in the image making business and the tools at our disposal to make awesomely fabulous looking slideshow videos is now so easy. My favorite is Animoto for creating a stellar show in less time that it takes to make a sandwich. Just upload your images, pick a song and a style and voila! Then export to YouTube and embed the code on your website or share directly onto Facebook. Someone say “Yeah baby!”

Recently YouTube upgraded the layout of their pages which means we have new options to display our channel art. To save you time, I created a layered PSD for you to quickly insert your images and logo so that it uploads correctly.

TIP: make the channel or banner link to your homepage outside of YouTube to help drive traffic (see my YouTube channel here).

YouTube Channel Art Template

Finding your unique voice can be difficult to hear when the world shouts so much noise! Geez Louise it can give me a headache. But there are brands out that that have managed to clamor through the masses and become “sticky” and I always think of them.

For example, when ever I see the colors red and white and curly fonts I think Coke. The simple swoosh of Nike reminds me to “Just Do it”. A simple ‘O’ brings the queen of branding straight to mind, Oprah.

So what does your brand say about you? What feelings does your business’s name, logo and tagline conjure up? A brand is more than a name, it’s how people FEEL about you.

We’ve heard it before but it really is true, ask any politician, “people buy from people they like”. Yes it still feels like the playground at school, we all vie for people’s affections and want to be the popular ones. However, we can’t win them all but our unique voice will appeal to the right kinds of people, just like a dog whistle.

Think about how you are speaking to your ideal target client? What 3 things do you want people to see, feel and know about you? Here is a simple yet effective exercise…..

Step #1: Ask your BFF’s, family and friends what THREE words that come to mind when they think of you.

Step #2: Create a Pinterest board of your likes, loves, favorites and dreams. Check out this one I did for myself, it truly was an eye opener.

Step #3: Pick out THREE elements that stand out from your board. Think of emotive feeling words and those that describe a sense of being like beautiful, edgy, peaceful, dark etc.

Step #4: Collate the words from friends and the words from your board and circle the ones that match or are similar. You should have a pretty good idea of your style and how people feel about you.

From your master list you can start to define your ‘core values”. These will help you stay within the parameters of your brand and help you define and refine your voice. I learnt that even though I like the look of moody looking photos they are not my personal brand, my brand is beautiful, emotional, light, airy, colorful and fun.

From here on you can use your style board to direct your website designer, graphic designer and yourself so you keep “speaking” in your one true voice that only you have to give to the world.

Pinterest has become all the rage these days. It’s gone beyond the place to pin recipes and favorite wardrobe picks, it’s now a traffic beheamoth! If you’re a business owner and are not utilizing Pinterest as part of your online marketing strategy you must be living under a rock… at least that’s what if felt like for me.

To see what I mean follow me on Pinterest here…

What Pinterest Is…
What I love about Pinterest is that it takes my imagination and makes it visual! As a photographer it’s like a candy store of visual feasts of color, ideas and inspiration. To quote “Pinterest helps people collect and organize the things they love.” It connects people with common interests, hobbies, likes, tastes and values. It’s a visual discovery of all the things I love, the places I dream about visiting, the clothes I love to wear, vintage photos that inspire my imagination, and the brand I want to be.

What Pinterest did for my Brand…
Last year I underwent a complete brand make-over of my photography business. I needed to take it from “fuddy duddy” to “modern class”. So using pins and a board I was able to clarify my brand by adding colors, tones, ideas, styles and inspiration to define my personal style. This was a step a graphic designer suggested that I work on to help her better understand my vision, and even though I didn’t agree with her recommendations I personally got a better understading of the essentials of my own brand. What I realized looking at my Pin board was that my old brand was not speaking my language. I needed to redefine my style and my brand to better attract my ideal clientele. Big props to Pinterest for being my brand expert!

Pinning Etiquette…
There is a standard of etiquette that you are expected to adhere to when using the site, and according to their website they are:
>Be respectful (remember people are on the other side of comments so be nice)
>Be yourself (being genuine is more important than pinning just to get more followers)
>Give credit (honor the artists who create great work and link back to their websites)
>Stay alert (there is a zero tolerance for nudity, pornography or hateful pins)
>Let us know (Pinterest likes feedback so if you find something wrong let them know).

So to make it easy to understand this social platform, I’ve put together this easy to understand step-by-step guide to help you drive more traffic and engagement to your own website…

Step 1) Switch your Pinterest Personal Page to a Business Page

Assuming you already have an account (you can open a new business account as well as a personal account), the latest updates made by Pinterest that prove the most useful for business owners is that their new terms of service allow us to use Pinterest for commercial purposes. The other biggest advantage with being a business is the introduction of analytics. This is hugely important in analyzing the success or failure of a marketing strategy so now it’s so much easier for website owners to understand what “pins” well. At first I was afraid I would lose all the 2000+ pins and followers I had but there was nothing to worry about, everything stayed in tack when I switched over. Don’t worry if you don’t like the layout of the new look, you can always switch back.

Step 2) Analyze what pins are your most popular
To figure out which images are the most popular and being pinned from your website use this link: http://pinterest.com/source/yourwebsite.com
I was surprised to see which images were the most pinned. What I thought were the most visually appealing were not the favorites, instead it was the ones that offered tips and provided value.

Step 3) Protect your images with a Watermark
The single most irritating thing about being a photographer is when I find an image I love, or one of my own images, and can’t find the source or website it came from! It really grates my cheese when the author/artist doesn’t get the credit they deserve for creating an image. Granted Pinterest is “supposed” to keep the tracking info of where the image originates from but I’ve found that after being pinned several times an image loses it origin links. So the only way around this that I found that works is to watermark your images with your logo AND your website URL. I know it can become obnoxious but it’s the only way to guarantee you get the credit. Part of looking at my analytics was realizing that some of my images that pinned the most didn’t have my link or logo on them! Ouch!

So I’m off to reassess all my images on my own website and switch them with watermarked images….
=====================================================

STAY TUNED:
The second installment of “Pinterest for Business A Photographer’s Guide {2}” will cover how to watermark you images in 3 seconds and how to use Pinterest to drive more traffic using repins and contests.

UPDATE: Watch the final part of Heather’s story and makeover HERE http://www.mimikacooney.com/living-with-lyme-disease.html

Meet Heather. Heather is the lucky winner of my Worthy Revolution make-over giveaway held last year. Heather has a truly inspiring story and I’m so honored to be sharing it. As a mother of a toddler, Heather suffered for over a year without a diagnosis of Chronic Lyme Disease and experienced debilitating symptoms that caused her much pain.

Heather was shy to nominate herself and said… “One year and 15 doctors later, I was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease last December, and have been undergoing long-term pulse antibiotic treatment over the past year and probably for the next year or so. This would be such a fun blessing and would be a great way to end this year as it has been very much of a roller coaster ride physically, emotionally, mentally, and financially. In the midst of it all though, God is SO Good! ~Romans 5:3-5~”

The support for Heather’s entry for the contest was so inspiring that I’m so glad she won (winner picked by random.org). Read what her friends and family said of this brave young mom…

Robin said “I want to nominate Heather F, she is a beautiful woman inside and out and has been battling Chronic Lyme the past year, and the year before that was searching for a diagnosis. She has been through so much the past two years and is continuing to go through difficulties while being a good wife and good mother to her young son. She is young herself, this can happen to anyone and she has taken it with strength and grace. Through it all she still uplifts others, and it is time she gets pampered and uplifted.!”

Amy said “I am nominating my sister Heather Francisco. She was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease almost a year ago. She has remained strong and faithful to God. She has been an inspiration to other people battling their own problems. Through all the difficult times she has had, this would be a fun experience for her to celebrate the progress that has been made through her treatment.”

Read more nominations here.

The Worthy Revolution…
To celebrate Heather’s new health and triumph we are treating her like a Queen for her make-over and photo shoot as part of our “Worthy Revolution” experience. We’ve picked the historic Morehead Inn to create the vintage nostalgia. We have the awesome talents of Amanda of Isabel’s Corner Videography to capture the day’s events, and the fab Brenda of X-S Hair to do the make-up and styling.

The styling…
I love the planning and styling part of a photo session. I get giddy with excitement browsing Pinterest and the internet for ideas and inspiration. I thought with Heather’s petite frame and considering that she hardly wears make-up, I figured why not go for something so different and never seen before. So looking at a bolt of unused fabric I had in my studio my creative juices got flowing. The turquoise and gold tones of the damask fabric suited something upscale and classy.

Drum roll please…. so we are going for a Les Miserables / Marie Antoinette look for Heather!

Look at the fabric swatches of the gown we are having made just for her shoot, a salmon pink to finish the look. I have the wonderful talents of Todd and his team of Scarlet Plus Boutique (Charlotte NC) to thank for creating a one-of-a-kind custom gown. Todd has since mentioned what a feat it’s become creating such an elaborate ball gown, but he’s so thrilled it’s the best he has created yet! I can’t wait to see it for myself at Heather’s fitting.

The eats…
Since my visit to Paris in January I’m in love with everything French. I bought a recipe book and got my creative juices flowing with ideas of color and styling. To top off the French Revolution feel of the shoot we had to have some authentic French macarons to act as props. I’m so thankful for Johnnie of Trendy Treats Desserts for creating 3 dozen of these babies! Trust me, they are real finicky to make (I tried and failed).

Stay tuned…
Part two of Heather’s story will follow as we put the final pieces of the shoot together. The next thing I have to get are her jewelry pieces and decide on the lighting. I’m thinking dramatic Hollywood lighting for a new twist…

What would you add to the shoot? Comment below.
