How To Create MultiBoot USB Flash Drive (Windows 7 And XP)

After reading our how to install Windows 7 from USB, and installing Windows 7 on external hard drive guides, several readers have been asking us about creating a multi-boot USB with XP and Windows 7 on it.

In this guide, we will show you how to create a multi-boot Windows USB flash drive with Windows XP and Windows 7. Once you have this multi-boot USB, you will be able to install XP and Windows 7 from the USB stick.

Required things:

1. A USB flash drive with a minimum of 4 GB space

2. Windows 7 installation DVD

3. Windows XP installation CD/DVD

Procedure:

1. Connect the USB flash drive to your Windows machine and move data present on the USB flash drive to a safer location.

2. Download WinSetupFromUSB Zip file, extract the contents to desktop. Open the folder, right-click on WinSetupFromUSB (.exe) file and select Run as administrator option.

3. Once the tool launched, select the following options:

# Removable

# Windows will be installed in \WINDOWS

Also make sure that your USB flash is shown in USB Disk Selection box. Once you are done with the above mentioned tasks, click RMPrepUSB button.

4. This will launch RMPREPUSB tool. In this tool, you will need to enable the below mentioned options.

A. Make sure that your USB flash drive is selected in the first box

B. Under Boot Options, select XP/BartPE bootable [NTLDR]

C. Under File System and OverRides section, select Boot as HDD (C:2PNST), and NTFS options

D. Select File –> USB option in Image Tools box

Finally, click Prepare Drive button to see a message from the tool. Click Ok button. Click Ok button on the next screen as well.

5. Wait for a few minutes till you get a Command Prompt message saying “Operation Completed”.

6. Close the PREPUSB tool.

7. Insert your XP CD/DVD into the optical drive. In the WinSetupFromUSB tool, click Browse button next to Windows 2000/XP/2003 Source box to browse to the XP installation files present on your CD/DVD. Alternatively, if you have the XP installation files on a local drive, you can browse to that folder.

8. Click Go button and wait for a few minutes to see the following screen:

Click Ok button. Remove the XP CD/DVD from the optical drive and insert Windows 7 DVD.

9. Select Vista/7 setup/PE/RecoveryISO option and browse to the Windows 7 installation files folder. Finally, click Go button. Please note that this operation may take hours. Don’t close the application if you see “Not Responding” message in the title bar.

10. Wait for the Done message before you click the Exit button.

11. Now, it’s time to download another small file named Bootfiles from here. Extract the contents to desktop. Copy menu.lst and winsetup.lst files to the USB flash drive and replace the old files with new ones. Click Copy and Replace option when you are prompted with the Copy File message.

12. Your multi-boot USB flash drive is ready. Reboot your machine and start installing XP or Windows 7 from the USB.

Note: When you select Windows XP setup in the boot screen, you will see two options:

First part of Windows XP setup

Second part of Windows XP setup

You should choose the first part of Windows XP setup, but on the following restarts you choose the second part of the setup.

Intel Atom’s Quad-Core ‘ValleyView’ Details Leaked

Recently, details of Intel's upcoming Atom SoC (System-on-a-Chip) processor (codenamed 'ValleyView') have been leaked on August 15 at Chinese Web site Baidu. According to the leaked document, the company will release one, two, and four cores Atom SoC processors. The clock speed range of the processors are 1.2GHz to 2.4GHz and supports a Generation-7 graphics processing unit (GPU), overall almost seven times faster than current Atom processors.

The ValleyView processors are based on the Silvermont architecture and the processors are part of Intel’s Bay Trail platform. Intel has designed ValleyView-I for industrial and automotive application purpose, ValleyView-D for desktop systems, ValleyView-T for small devices and ValleyView-M for netbooks.

The ValleyView SoC processors will have either a dual or single channel memory controller that will support up to 8 GB of DDR3L-1066 or DDR3L-1333 RAM, Intel HD audio, PCi-E 2.0, SATA 2.0, even USB 2.0 and 3.0.

According to the leaked document, Intel will release its ValleyView processors in the second half of 2013.

Nokia Lumia 920 PureView And Lumia 820 Image Leaked

Nokia's upcoming flagship device called Lumia 920 PureView has been leaked with image. This phone will run on Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 OS. A Twitter user named @evleaks has leaked an image of Nokia Lumia 920 with some information. The company has used its PureView image technology in the device. The device has a 4.5-inch display. The phone may become available in various types of color casing, according to the source.

Some information of Nokia Lumia 820 has also been leaked too. The alleged phone’s display is measured 4.3-inch but there is no word about actual resolution. Nokia has used Carl Zeiss optics in this device, according to the source.

We could not find more information about both devices. It is expected that Nokia will reveal details on September 5 event. We have to wait till the Nokia and Microsoft’s joint event.

AntiSec Hacks FBI Servers, Leaks 1 Million Apple Device IDs

AntiSec, a splinter group of the popular hacktivist group Anonymous, has claimed that it was recently able to break into FBI's servers. As a result of this breach, the group claims, it obtained more than 12 million Apple UDIDs. It has now leaked 1 million of these on the web.

The group claims that it was able to break into the notebook of a FBI agent who belonged to the FBI Regional Cyber Action Team and New York FBI Office Evident Response Team. The breach was achieved by exploiting the AtomicReferenceArray vulnerability in Java.

During the hack session, it was found out that a certain file titled ‘NCFTA_iOS_devices_intel.csv’ was contained on the machine. AntiSec downloaded the file, only to find that it contained the device IDs of some 12 million Apple users. The UDIDs were accompanied with names, zip code, phone numbers as well as other information. AntiSec has posted 1 million of these UDIDs online over here.

What this suggests is that the data has been handed over to FBI by Apple. Apple is known to be quite friendly and complacent towards security agencies. The file name contains the acronym ‘NCFTA’ which probably stands for National Cyber Forensics & Training Alliance. NCFTA “functions as a conduit between private industry and law enforcement.”

In other words, it is a body that lets security agencies gather all kinds of user data from private companies. And Apple seems to be a part of it. It is quite disappointing to note that while on the face, most tech giants blatantly argue that they would never divulge any user information to the security agencies, things seem to be different behind the scenes.

But recent report says, Samsung Galaxy S III was sold more in August 2012 in the U.S. than iPhone 4S. That is, Samsung Galaxy S III was the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. in August.

Recently analyst firm Canaccord Genuity has revealed that in August 2012 Samsung Galaxy S III was the top-selling smartphone in the U.S.

T. Michael Walkley, an analyst of Canaccord Genuity firm, said, “We believe this is the first month since the iPhone 4S launched in October 2011 that it was not the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. market.”

The sales of iPhone 4S have decreased in recent month in anticipation of iPhone 5.

How To Improve The Autonomy Of Your Laptop – Windows

Step 3: Under On Battery drop down menu select Power Saver, and under On AC drop down menu select High Performance. Click Next to continue.

Step 4: Check all the boxes to allow Aerofoil manage the volume of the speakers, the component of gadgets and the Windows power profiles. To continue click Next.

Microsoft Attempts To Gain More Control By Changing TOS

After the change in Terms of Service (TOS) by Google, now it’s time for Microsoft. They have proposed a new TOS mainly concerning policy on privacy and dispute settlement issues. Microsoft informed its clients about the changes in policy via mail, saying that the new TOS will in effect from October 19, 2012.

Compared to the previous policy it can be said that the new policy is going to benefit Microsoft at least in two ways. The first case is about the usage of customer data. The new policy has granted Microsoft the authority to use customer data across its cloud properties. The previous user data usage policy that such data is subject to be used “solely to the extent necessary to provide the service” is replaced by the announcement that Microsoft reserves the right to use user data to “provide, protect and improve Microsoft products and services”. That means Microsoft gets the authority to extract content from Hotmail, SkyDrive and Office Suite to personalize Bing search results for individual users.

Again, because of the new policy US users will no longer be able to file any lawsuit against Microsoft. They have to settle disputes with arbitration rather than litigation. The newly added class action waiver contract also gives Microsoft safety from all class action suits. Previously such changes have been noticed in the TOS of Sony and Netflix.

Apple Officially Invites For iPhone 5 Launch On September 12

At last, the season long wait is going to be over. Apple sends out the press invitation for its next event of possible iPhone 5 release. They sent out e-mail invitation to the media persons on September 4. It’s basically an invitation only event. It will be held on September 12 in San Fransisco.

The image of the invitation hints out that Apple is going to name their next smartphone as rumored “iPhone 5”. Numeric number “12” illustrates the date of the event & there is a shadow under 12 which indicates a large 5 which actually depicts about iPhone 5 launch. The invitation reveals little about what will be announced. The tagline says only, “It’s almost here.” Apple may release iOS 6 on the same day.

The upcoming iPad mini rendered in 3D based on reports and leaked schematics

Following the report yesterday with information about the iPad mini’s design, specifically that the iPad mini would look like a larger iPod touch (with skinnier bezels than the full-sized iPad), we’ve made some 3D renders.

These renders, courtesy of designer Maurizio Vitale, are based off of our reported information. More importantly, however, is that these renders are also based off of the leaked iPad mini schematics from July, which basically match our information from sources.
The height, width, screen-size, and more were all calculated based on those aforementioned schematics. Better yet, we’ve also got an iPad mini render that compares the device in size to the current Retina display iPad with a 9.7-inch display. That comparison is also based on the dimensions garnered from the schematics.

Once the hallmark of low-end online ads — dancing girls for dating sites and jiggling bellies for weight loss products — animated GIF images are popping up everywhere. You’ll see them used throughout Tumblr and even on big news sites in place of video.

An animated GIF file is like a little cartoon and is much smaller than a video file. It’s easy to attach to an email, post to Facebook or pop into your own blog.
You can make animated GIFs for free from your smartphone, which is probably what you are using to shoot photos and video anyway. You’ll need an app like GIFBoom (the runaway favorite for iPhone). It’s available for free from the App Store and for Android from Google Play.
You may log in with Facebook, Twitter or an email address. Choose a video from your phone’s camera roll. GIFBoom converts your video into single frames. Choose up to 20 sequential frames to make your animated GIF. You then have the option to have your GIF play backwards or forwards.
You can add filters for different effects, such as black and white, sepia or night-vision (which makes everything green). Then preview your GIF and save it. At this point, you can email or text it to a friend or post to social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.
You can also make GIFs from still images stored in your phone or take pictures (in a quick series like a flipbook). You can choose up to 20 images for your GIF. If you want to save a GIF to your own camera roll, go into the app’s “Advanced Settings” and turn on “Save to Camera Roll.”
GIFBoom is also a social network, similar to Instagram. In fact, it’s tough to tell the difference between the two when you log on. You can browse by popular GIFs and search by tags. Any GIF can be “reboomed” (reposted) to your own newsfeed.

Apple‘s valuation reached $621.64 billion Monday morning, making it the most valuable company in history.

The company’s stock reached an all-time high of $664.65 per share early Monday afternoon, following strong sales projections for its as-yet-unannounced next-generation iPhone device, the iPhone 5.
The record was previously held by another U.S. technology company, Microsoft, at its height in 1999.
Apple became the most valuable company in the U.S. when it reached a $346.74 billion valuation in mid-2011, topping Exxon Mobil for the first time. It surpassed Microsoft’s market capitalization in 2010.
Apple setting a record valuation now is especially impressive given the passing of co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs in October as well as its relatively modest price-earnings ratio: 15.57. Amazon, by comparison, has a P/E of 291.73, and even Facebook’s beleaguered stock is still trading at a P/E of 68.51.

iPhone Users Are Adviced To Be Careful Before Replying To Any Text

If you're an iPhone owner, then you should be careful before responding to any text messages. French jailbreak developer and iOS security researcher Pod2G has found a flaw in iOS messaging system for which hackers or thieves could access your personal information. The flaw involves a malicious party spoofing the "reply" to number. According to Pod2G, this flaw is present in all versions of iOS up to and including the latest iOS 6 beta 4.

When a user writes a message, the mobile converts the message into Protocol Description Unit (PDU). PDU is a protocol that handles the sending and receiving of various types of messages in mobile devices. As soon as the sender sends the message, the mobile passes the converted message to the baseband for delivery. On the other side, there is a section called User Data Header (UDH) in the text payload which defines a lot of advanced features. One of these options enables the user to change the reply address of the text from the original one. In fact, the message header as well as the email header can be exploited since carriers don’t check for the validity of this information when used by third-parties.
According to the analysis of Pod2G, not only the iPhone but also there are some other phones that are compatible with a number of advanced SMS functions which can be enabled if a hacker tinkers with the UDH (User Data Header) section of a text message. It means, if the destination mobile is compatible with UDH, and if the receiver tries to reply to that text, then the message receiver will not respond to the original number, but to the specified one.
Here are some examples of Apple iOS flaw:

Pirates could send a message that seems to come from the bank of the receiver asking for some private information, or inviting them to go to a dedicated website. [Phishing]
One could send a spoofed message to your device and use it as a false evidence.
Anything you can imagine that could be utilized to manipulate people, letting them trust somebody or some organization texted them.

As Apple is using the reply-to address of a message’s User Data Header (UDH) to identify the origin rather than the raw source, so iPhone users can be circumvented if they don’t check this part of the message. Though it has been mentioned that iPhone will bring a proof of concept messaging tool soon, but Pod2G is pushing for an official solution before the next iOS version launches.
So for your precaution, we advice you not to believe any SMS that you receive on your iPhone from now on at first sight. The right way of replying a message would be message recipient should see both the original and reply-to addresses. By doing so, the replier will know which number has sent the message, and which number will receive the message once he/she replies. Android Users May Finally Be Able To Update Devices On Their Own

Android users have long complained about most Android vendors for implementing software updates from Google bit too late. The reason is because most vendors tend to use a customized version of Android and can't update immediately, given the work they have to do to incorporate a new version of Android OS from Google. However, this may finally change now.

Vendors such as Samsung run customized version of Android on their devices. So when Google rolls out a new version of Android, these vendors have to work out the details of adding their own customized features to the new version and only then releasing it. This rather irks the users who have to wait for months to get a new version of Android after its release by Google.
However, this may change now. Android Open Source Project’s head, Jean-Baptiste Queru has now stated in a recent blog post that they are working on bringing a clean, unaltered version of Android to devices other than Google’s line of Nexus. This essentially means that Android users will now be able to install new updates from Google on their own, without having to wait for their respective vendors to implement them.
As a start, Queru said, a clean version of Android is being brought to Sony Xperia S. Other Android users will have to wait a while but we are sure that if indeed the scope of this is widened, this can mean faster updates across the world of Android, making the users very happy.

Servers Ultimate is a somewhat unique app that let’s you make use of that spare Android device by turning it into a server. Samsung’s Next Galaxy Note Image Leaked

Recently, a rumor has been raised up about Samsung's next Galaxy Note. According to the Business Insider, Samsung's next super phone image has been leaked. This Android phone/tablet will come with a special stylus. The upcoming device is a successor of Galaxy Note 10.1.

According to the leaked image, its display will be bigger than current Samsung’s Galaxy Note. The display seems to be 5.5 inches and the Super AMOLED screen has been used that will ensure incredible resolution and brightness. No more information was found about its display.

Top 10 Tools That Are Better in the Command Line

Typing commands into a terminal may seem tedious, but with the right tools, the command line can be incredibly powerful. Here are our favorite command line tools that do awesome things you just can't match in a GUI.

Note: While a lot of the tutorials and videos on this page are Linux-centric, these commands are useful for everyone. Mac users can use all of these commands in their Terminal as well, and Windows users can check out Cygwin for a more UNIX-like terminal experience where these tools come in handy. Also note that not every tool comes preinstalled on every system, so you may need to install some of them separately before you can use them.

10. Top

When your computer starts to freeze, slow down, or just misbehave, the top command can help you set things straight. By just typing top into a terminal, you can get a list of every program running on your system, as well as how much of your system's resources they're taking up. Then, if you find one that's gone a bit haywire, you can kill it and restore your system to its normal, speedy self. The whole thing takes a few seconds and you don't need to wait for any windows or fancy graphs to load. Check out this quick introduction to top for more, and if you want something a bit friendlier, the htop command is a pretty great replacement.

9. Ifconfig

If you have more than one computer in your house, chances are you'll need to dig into your network settings from time to time. Knowing your network can help you controlling your HTPC, monitoring your BitTorrent downloads, or sharing files between computers. When that time comes, ifconfig will be your best friend. It shows you the IP address of your computer, the MAC address of your Ethernet and Wi-Fi cards, and a ton more. Check out this introduction to ifconfig to see how it's used.

8. Chmod and Chown

Every once in awhile, you'll come across a "permission denied" error when trying to access a file, and it can be infuriating. Running chmod will edit the permissions of any file, letting you read, write, and/or execute a given file according to your specifications. You can do this from the GUI, but chmod is a bit more powerful, especially if you're working with multiple files. 7. SSH

Why set up a full screen sharing system when all you need to do is check up on one simple thing? SSH connects you to another computer and lets you use its terminal as if you were sitting right in front of it. You can check running processes, change permissions, and access files on your remote machine right from the machine in front of you. It can do a lot more too, from controlling a monitor-less home serverto encrypting your web browsing on a less-than-secure connection. Heck, it can even help you manage your jailbroken iOS device.

6. Wget

You can can head to a web site and download a file in one click, but if you want serious control over your downloads wget is the best for the job. With a few keystrokes you can automatically download all the music on a web site, resume downloads that keep flaking out, or even grab the entire archive of NASA's "Astronomy Picture of the Day". 5. Vi and Vim

Despite all the fancy writing tools out there plain text is still one of the most useful ways to manage information. It can make for an extremely versatile to-do list, help you tweak settings for your favorite app, or even let you build an entire web site. And while there are a lot of great text editors out there, a lot of power users swear by Vi and Vim. Vi and Vim are command line text editors that are entirely keyboard-based, letting you navigate large blocks of text with just a few keystrokes. If you're serious about editing text, these editors are the way to go, despite their learning curve. Thankfully, the web is full of tutorials on how to use them.

4. Grep

Not all command line work is clean and simple. Sometimes, you'll run a command and get a giant wall of text in return that's impossible to wade through. Luckily, grep will help you find what you're looking for. On its own, it can search through any text within a file on your system for a specific phrase (e.g. grep Laundry todo.txt), which is useful in and of itself. However, grep's real power comes when used in conjunction with other commands. Can't find what you're looking for in the output of top? You can use grep to search for the program you're looking for. 3. Pipes

Pipes isn't the name of a specific tool, but rather a class of tools that help you send the output of one command to another command. Take our example from #4, where we wanted to find something specific in the output of top. To do this, you would run something like top -l 2 | grep firefox. The | symbol pipes the output of top to grep, which then searches for firefox and finds you the relevant information. You can also pipe the output of a command to a text file with the > symbol, such as: ifconfig > myip.txt. For more examples of how to use pipes, check out our command line primer for beginners.

2. Find

Unlike grep, which searches for text within files, find is a tool that helps you find files based on other criteria—like name, filetype, or when they were last edited. It's much more powerful than the traditional Spotlight search or Windows search, and one of the best way to quickly find files on your system. 1. Apt-Get and Other Package Managers

If you're tired of opening up a web browser and visiting a web site just to download a program, package managers are a godsend. Package managers—like Ubuntu's apt-get, Arch Linux's pacman, or OS X's homebrew make installation a snap. With them, you can search a large database of applications, as well as download and install them with just a few keystrokes. All you need to know is the name of the application you're looking for. It'll even install any prerequisites you need for that program—like Java—so you don't have to do that yourself. What package manager you use generally depends on your OS, so Google around to see what managers are available for your system and what apps are available in their repositories.

Demonoid Domains Go Up For Sale, After Shut Down By Authorities

The content industry as well as the authorities had been doggedly pursuing the popular BitTorrent tracker, Demonoid. The website has been able to stand the pressure from these quarters for a long time. But in a recent raid, Ukrainian authorities finally took down the servers of the website manually.

Most of Demonoid servers were located in a popular datacenter, Colocall, in Ukrain. The authorities raided the datacenter last week and not only shut down the Demonoid servers but also confiscated a lot of equipment. Most significantly, the authorities have copied all the information from these servers.
According to an anonymous Colocall source, “Investigators have copied all the information from the servers [used by] Demonoid and sealed them. Some equipment was not seized, but now it does not work, and we were forced to terminate the agreement with the site.”
Moreover, a crackdown has also been launched against the Demonoid management, which is believed to be based in Mexico. According to reports, a number of arrests have been made and different assets have been seized.
The final nail in Demonod’s coffin has already been pressed. Now, the domains of the website, namely demonoid.me, demonoid.com and demonoid.ph are up on sale. They are available on the domain name marketplace Sedo and will go to the highest bidder. Naturally, the seller will be able to scoop a significant sum on this one because the domains are still experiencing a lot of traffic.

RIM Accidentally Leaked BlackBerry Bold 9730

Recently, RIM's undeclared BlackBerry Bold 9730 has accidentally been posted in its App World Vendor Portal. Tech blog N4BB noticed the device listing and broke the news with a screenshot of the page as proof. The leaked image does not provide any specs or other handset related information. However, the listing shows the model number of the BlackBerry to be Bold 9730.

The source is suspecting that BlackBerry Bold 9730 could be a CDMA version of the popular Bold 9790. Deatiled information about the handsets market readiness and carrier availability is not clear.
RIM has acknowledged that the accidental leak “was simply an error on their part.”

Pinterest Finally Launched Android And iPad App

Pinterest, the newest sensation in social media, has already delayed to launch its Android platform app. Though the company previously released its iPhone app, but it didn't have any iPad app until now. Yesterday, Pinterest has simultaneously released apps for Android and iPad, as well as an updated version of its iPhone app. The announcement has been declared on the company's summer party which was held at its new San Francisco headquarters.

The Pinterest app for Android seems to be freshly build for Android. Pinterest has taken longer than anticipated to release its Android app. Earlier speculations expected the app to be released at Google’s I/O developers conference last month.

Pinterest for Android is now available at Google Play for free. You can download Pinterest for iPad with updated iPhone app from iTunes for free.

Windows 8 RTM: Final Build Released

Microsoft has finally released the final build of Windows 8. The build is available for MSDN and TechNet developers for now but will become widely available to all users soon. The company already launched a number of Windows 8 betas in the past but this RTM release is as close to the full version of Windows 8 as can be. Read further to get a glimpse on what's new in Windows 8 RTM.

If you have tried your hands on the earlier Windows 8 betas, you probably know most of the features of the OS already. The final build brings only a few, but significant, new features which we haven’t yet seen in the earlier builds. For instance, we were told that Microsoft will include a tutorial for Windows 8 users when they start using it, so as to give them an idea of what new features it includes. Until now, no Windows 8 built had included the tutorial but RTM now features this tutorial which is brief and concise.
The eminent changes in the final build are listed below:
Better customization options for graphical changes:
The main difference that you will see in the RTM and earlier builds of Windows 8 is that RTM comes equipped with better customization options for the Start Screen. You can tweak the color settings of your Start Screen with better options and can also add one of the 14 ‘personalized tattoos’ to your screens. These tattoos are patterned backgrounds and borders for the Start Screen.

Interestingly, the color of window borders and taskbar is dynamic now. It changes on its own based on the dominant color on your desktop background. For instance, if you have a blue wallpaper, the color of window borders as well as the taskbar would turn blue.
New Start Screen icons:
A number of Start Screen icons have been significantly changed. The ‘Store’ icon simply featured a shopping bag in the earlier builds but in RTM, it has a Windows icon plastered on one side. Similarly, the icon for SkyDrive has also been altered.
New Bing App:
In the past builds, Microsoft has unveiled a number of Windows 8 apps which will be a part of the OS. Until now, there was no Bing app but in RTM, there is a clear, metro-branded Bing app. It is a neat app that launches with a single search-bar against a black background. One you punch in a search query, it starts providing suggestions. The coolest part is that the results will be displayed as tiles and not in the regular, linear, boring fashion.

Desktop vs Metro in Windows 8:
Desktop and metro, as we all know, will be two chief modes in Windows 8. While in metro mode, users will be able to run metro apps and it comes equipped with far more appealing visuals, desktop is relatively simpler in comparison.
The settings of desktop’s color scheme and wallpaper are quite independent from those of metro settings. Interestingly, the default wallpapers for metro are mostly unreal and are created visually. In contrast, the wallpapers for desktop are photographic and real.

While all these features make Windows 8 even more appealing, all eyes are set on Windows Store. The Store, although it offers a fairly adequate number of apps, still needs to have lot more to hook up the millions of potential users in the coming days. We can expect that with the release of RTM, developers will put the final strokes to their apps and submit them for the Store. Microsoft can make its official launch of Windows 8 on October 26th a successful event by coupling it with the release of a whole plethora of apps – that is sure to get the attention of the users.

The Web May Finally Get Interactive 3D Graphics

Until now, the web doesn't have any interactive 3D graphics available on it inherently. For instance, the HTML code itself doesn't support the inclusion of such graphics and as a result, most of the websites have to rely on other tools to display interactive 3D content. This may, however, change soon.

The need for such a change is imminent especially because in today’s world, from PCs to smartphones and tablets, nearly all devices are equipped with advanced graphics hardware to process 3D graphics. That is precisely why a German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence has joined hands with Fraunhofer Institute of Computer Graphics Research. The two stated in a press release that they ‘are working to describe computer scenes in spatial detail directly within the websites’ code.’
This is an intriguing idea since so far, no graphics could be added to HTML within its code. These two institutes intend extend HTML to add such a functionality. Initially, both institutes had their own separate proposals but now, they are collaborating to create common components for highly interactive 3D graphics.
A number of new elements including material properties, 3D geometry, lights and virtual cameras will become a part of HTML if the proposal is accepted. Philipp Slusallek, a professor of computer graphics at Saarland University states, “These elements can be used almost exactly like existing HTML elements. Therefore, millions of Web developers can quickly begin to include interactive 3D visualizations in their Web applications.”
The head of the research group working on this at DFKI/VCI, Kristian Sons, is of the opinion, “The proposed declarative extension to HTML offers a high-level approach for Web developers, extending the low-level procedural approach to talk to graphics hardware now offered by WebGL. Instead of requiring Web developers to become WebGL experts or learn new APIs, we are adding advanced graphics capabilities to HTML, allowing Web developers to reuse their existing skills and directly apply the Web technology they use on a daily basis.”
