Style 101: Must Haves

This list of must haves was well thought out and researched based on actual women I know - not celebrity must haves. I have nothing against celebrities, but we needed real world culture in this list.

1.Boyfriend blazer (grey/blue)- it's versatile, you can wear with jeans or skirt and it's an updated version of the basic black. I own the blazer pictured from gap in grey.

2. Oversize Leather bag (color) - great bags never go out of style and purchasing according to seasons can get overwhelming, purchase a bag in a dark mustard or grey, that way you can wear all year round.

3. Leather bomber - although in previous post I have advocated purchasing "fake" leather for those who aren't ready to purchase the real McCoy, every girl needs at least one real leather jacket in her closet, it will last for a very long time and what a great way to keep the cool.

4. V-Neck T-Shirt - grab one in every color and can be purchased at most retail shops, these will go great under a cardigan, blazer, or jacket.

5. Pearl Earrings - a classic that has lasted through the ages, this must have will never go out of style.

6. Ballet Flats - great staple, can wear with a dress, skirt or jeans.

7. Denim (Jean/Jacket) - update jeans by purchasing in straight leg or boyfriend jeans if you don't want to go skinny or try a destroyed denim look. The denim jacket is also an item that you can pair with anything in your closet.

8. Chunky jewelry - think big statement necklaces or bracelets that you can wear with simple tops (like the v-neck tee). Scour garage sales, ebay, vintage stores or your grandmothers closet for one of kind pieces.

9. Graphic Silk Top - an abstract artistic print can "make" your outfit and silk creates the flowy and chic aesthetic.

10. Le Scarf (colors) - Can add that extra something to any wardrobe and you can wear it throughout the seasons. Make sure you purchase in purples, yellows and blues to add pop to your outfit.

Project Runway Season Premier and Leather Goodies

Tonight @ 10pm Project Runway Season 7 will be premiering in NYC on the Lifetime network. Hopefully the essence and finesse of New York will bring some life back into the contestants and the show this season.

On the fashion front ...

There is a big trend this season - leather jackets! Leather jackets actually never go out of style, they reemerge redesigned every so often. Right now, leather jackets are offered in a variety of prices and styles. And luckily, faux leather jackets are proving stiff competition for their real brethren. There are several stores which have a wide selection of real/faux leather including, Urban Outfitters, Macy's, Free People and Forever 21. I happen to own 3 faux leather jackets, one in cream, winter white and black.

Below are a few of my favorites:

This brown leather jacket is from Urban Outfitters and also comes in black, priced at $298. Interestingly enough, I am not the only one who thought this jacket was awesome, it was worn on the set of Gossip Girl.

This is a real leather jacket offered on Rachel Roy's website and Macy's website, cost $129.00. It's unique and def follows the sculpted shoulder pad trend, but if you are like me and don't want to emphasize shoulders, this is a low key version and you can def get away with. I would wear this jacket open, with a longer blousy top beneath it and pair it with skinny jeans and heels/flat boots.

This leather jacket is from New York and Co. and comes at a steal of a price for the faux generations, $44.00.

The leather jacket offers a face lift to any outfit and an edge in the fashion world. Try throwing on a great destructed leather with a light blouse and dark jeans - you have the perfect outfit.

Logan's (IN my eyes) losing design with ILL FITTING HORRENDOUS TWEED pants and ILL fitting vest

Epperson's Losing Design, which was okay...but not HORRENDOUS

I know my PR posts are sporadic, but with good reason. Unless I am truly blown away or angry by the show, I will not waste space talking about it. Last night I was fired up, this is a SPOILER ALERT if you didn't watch last night. Logan and Epperson were in the bottom two, Epperson was voted off. Now, don't get me wrong I think Epperson can be odd, arrogant, and annoying at times, but his TRACK record has been steady and unique, and I was shocked that Heidi and the crew voted him off. Logan, what can I say about him... for some reason, the panel thinks he's gorgeous, I disagree, but his outfits are mediocre at best and he has been in the bottom more than twice. There are pieces in both of their collections that I could do without, but I was most interested in at least seeing a final product from Epperson at Bryant Park for Fashion Week. Let's see a comparison shall we? And you tell me what you think.

Another designer who caught my attention was Elie Saab, her collection had pieces that had embellishments and slightly exaggerated shoulders, without being over the top. There were mainly blacks used in this collection, but the surprise comes in the form of a confetti of color in a couple of the pieces that is both sexy and unique! This is another collection that if I could afford it, I would definitely be purchasing.

I am a woman who adores beautiful clothes and the fashion that comes with it. I would like to showcase a few pieces from the Roland Mouret Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear Collection. What stood out for me in this collection were the clean yet unexpected lines in the pieces. The blues and oranges in this collection are sumptuous! What draws me to this collection in particular, is the fact that if I could afford it, I would actually purchase some of these pieces.

CAFOs:Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations

I would like to shed some light on a dirty "little" secret that the American Government has been allowing for years. They are called Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations or CAFOs. I have become increasingly interested in learning about them from reading 'The Omnivore's Dilemma' by Michael Pollan. I am not yet finished reading the book, but the chapter on the CAFO has piqued my interest. Now, I am not yet ready to give an in depth report, but I have learned that CAFOs directly lead to toxic pollution in water streams, manure dust, and acid rain - all of which aid in the destruction of the earth. I am trying to get the word out about this, while also trying to find out why these operations are allowed to remain in the U.S. and infect Americans. Additionally, there is a link between the CAFOs and the excess corn the U.S. produces every year, which feed the animals, mainly the cattle in these CAFOs. Another note, cows are herbivore's, they should be eating grass, but by consuming corn meal in CAFOS, it fattens the cows in a shorter period of time, so instead of reaching ideal weight by 4-5 years, the calves are mature enough for slaughter by 1 1/2 years old. But I digress... stay tuned for more information as I research this sick twist on life - and please if you have more information on how to stop these farms from operating, please let me know.

Interesting things I have learned about myself in the past couple days:

1. I have a type, as in male type that I prefer - if you know me, you already know.

2. I really really like wines on the sweet end of the spectrum

3. People who talk really loud agitate me to the bone

4. I should patent my home-made spaghetti sauce

5. My dreams sometimes scare the living daylight (ha-ha) out of me! Example of a dream I had

while visiting my friend (Kristen) this past weekend: I was walking up the steps of a church? I entered a room that had 5-6 people lined up against the far side if the room. The room wasn't that large, probably just enough for the amount of people that were inside. There was an additional person, who upon me entering the room, introduced everyone by name, the only name I remember is Paul, because what she/he? said next was that all the people were dead. This triggered my unconscious/subconscious self to flee across the room and down another set of steps. The strange thing is, in my sleep I remember thinking, 'I do not want to see dead people in my dreams, this is not happening', however, partway down the steps, I decided I wanted to know for sure if the "dead" people in the room, were in fact dead. So, I head back up the steps to try and remember the names --- by that time the dream was slipping away and I was left with the name Paul. Knowing just the first name does me no good...

6. At times, I do not say what I am thinking, but I mean what I say when I finally say it.

7. I love arena rock

For once I am not discussing another subject, and working on an introspective analysis. How introspective, probable not much, but I tried.

Prject Runway Episode 3 - Season 6

Tonight is episode 3 of Project Runway. Although the designers seem to have much potential, I already have a few favs out there, I would like to see more challenges being brought forth to the table, literally. Creating a maternity dress and a red carpet dress isn't the most exciting thing they can do... I need twists and turns, sweat and tears!

Guest Judge tonight is Rachel Bilson - she has her own unique style so her input will be interesting.

So I'm fired then, thanks for being so upfront about it. It's okay though, I had realized this position wasn't going to work out for a while and had been looking for a better opportunity. Fortunately I've secured one and I was going to give my two weeks notice on Monday anyway. Not that you guys care now but it makes me feel a little better about being fired to tell you so...

Just started off on the wrong foot. Took me a while to get used to the commute down from Baltimore to DC. I worked virtually 12 hours everyday including my commute just to make it to that job everyday. Plus I have had this whole medical problem with my kidney stone going on lately. Very very very painful thing in case you have never had one. I waited a month for it to pass naturally before I went to the hospital to pay the money to get it removed. I ended up getting laser lithotripsy, which is where they insert a laser on a tube up my urethra and explode the large stone into smaller stones which I can then individually and very painfully pass over the next two weeks or so. Pain which I am taking some very hardcore medications to combat. I had several doctors in the urology department tell me that passing a kidney stone is actually worse than the pain of childbirth. I'm not normally sick this is actually probably the first time in my adult life I have had any illness outside of a brief cold or a sprained ankle, nothing that has kept me from work more than a day or two. You guys have no way of knowing all this since I was a new employee though. Because you have only known me a month, the last month is all you have to judge me from so I have no good will built up. You can't say well D is a good employee and this is just a tough time he's going through because you have never seen anything else. I just seem like some asshole who is full of one excuse after another. Whatever all I'm saying is no hard feelings either way. I guess I'm not very good at communicating when I have something wrong. I don't like to whine. I'm kinda pissed at being fired but I got something else to fall back and I understand where you are coming from. I just thought I'd explain myself somewhat cus I don't like people thinking I'm a dirt bag and I'm afraid that's the image I have now.

Anyway, I'll come by sometime tomorrow and turn my card and blackberry in. 8am isn't happening. I'm not fighting traffic to come in to get fired, I'm sorry. What is the address of your location in Hanover again by the way? Oh, also I need my cell phone charger back which is at XX-XX. I'll try to drop by Monday or Tuesday while I'm taking care of some other business down in the city, if someone over there could return that to me I would appreciate it. I'll try to give you a call on your cell about it XXXX when I'm going to drop by. It's just plugged into the outlet in that cube I was sitting it. The silver one.

Apartments - Happy Hunting

I am so sorry for neglecting my blog, but I have been going through it the last month or so.

Updates I: I now live by myself = peace of mind.

Update II: I was going to live with a roommate - but decided AGAINST it.

Update III: My landlords gave me one month notice exactly to find a new place to live...why? Oh b/c the Army decided to send them back to the area...sucks for me!!

Update IV: I watched the 'Hangover' ... twice

I wanted to discuss apartment negotiations here today, because by the end of this process I have become an expert receiving the best out of a new lease.

1. - research as much as you can about the apartment
2. - when you are with a leasing agent, be firm in your price limit, notice I didn't say range - they will always ask how much and the max.
3. - check out the apartment - by this time you should have viewed other apartments in the area to know what to look for and what to expect.
4. - as a renter, you probably have a list of required options; for example, my requirements were an updated kitchen, a view, closest space, and no units on the ground floor.

- if a unit does not have the required options you would like, you can always ask. Remember, leasing agents want your business and commission.

- I was able to negotiate a new kitchen, this came at no cost to me, most apartment complexes have budgets to these types of things.

- If you have questions about the apartment hunting tips, please leave a comment, I have assisted many of my friends on this front, and I am willing to help!

Bargain Shopping

This past weekend I shopped around for clothing - something I can do with relative ease.

Firstly - I bought these pair of Lucky Brand Modern Aviator Sunglasses - in black:

I paid $9.99 for them @ Marshall's, but the exact pair are currently on sale @ Victoria's Secret for $66.00.

I am also awaiting for this twice back ordered item to arrive at my house, it is from Urban Outfitters, Miley Cyrus has the same top, I don't know how I feel about that yet, nonetheless, the top is extraordinary different/colorful/flattering:

I paid $28.00 + $5.00 shipping, my only issue, is that it hasn't arrived as of yet because of the back ordered status, which changed from May 18, to June 23rd... somewhat ticked about that. don't sell a top if it's not in stock!

Fashions From the Valentino Party last night...

From bottom right to left:

Selita Ebanks- we get it, your a Victoria Secret model... why are you wearing a dress that leaves nothing to the imagination?

Rachel Roy- I wore harem pants in middle school as part of a Halloween Costume.. did you get the memo? Sparkly harem pants are not in style!

Claire Danes- she looks cute right? The dress is simple and quaint and her hair looks good.

Agyness THE MODEL- for once she is not dressed in "crazy" and I like the subdued classy black dress she has on.

Anne Hathaway - love the dress, but white is a hard color to wear for anyone... I do not like the cut of the dress on her.

Daphne Guiness - the dress is futuristically fabulous, but instead of the harsh makeup and hair, with a softer do' this look would have actually worked.

Hana Soukupova - the color washes her out a bit, but it's demure and satiny and kind of old Hollywood in the style... so not a toal miss.

Helena Christensen - stilll looks fabulous, love the one shoulder, the bag is a bit overwhelming, can't really see the full effect of the dress.

Martha Stewart - this is not the right outfit, it makes her look bigger than what she is and white nylons.... *shivers*

Lake Bell - awesome figure, and she is showing it off in the dress... not wowed by it... but she looks nice.

Maria Menounous - I would have taken away the black tights... for they make her took stumpy... and added a higher heel and pulled the hair off of her face. I mean simplicity is best...

Padma Lakshmi - You know I love you! But not sure about the Pocahantas look here...

Olivia Chantecaille - gorgeous in greeen and she looks happy!

Nicole Trifio - take away the heavy necklace, let her hair down, lengthen the dress a tad, and change the shoes (although I love the shoes) it's a bit too much bondage happening...

Day After First Bootcamp Class PLUS Working Out

Ouch... oh... sh**.... the boot camp kicked my butt last night....

However, it was great waking up this morning. I do like working out (sounds sick) but I do. And I
like the endurance and strength gained from long term exercise.

The class is 30 minutes long. We go through a continuous 3 cycle, plyometrics/calisthenics routine. 3-2-1.... this is the most effective type of workout for your body. When I am not in the gym, I also utilize Billy Blanks 'Tae Boe' Video and Jillian Michael's '30 Day Shred'. Jillian Michael's video, is very similar to the excercise routine I do in bootcamp. Billy Banks will get you firm and lean in no time.

Definition of Plyometrics (wikipedia): Plyometric movements, in which a muscle is loaded and then contracted in rapid sequence, use the strength, elasticity and innervation of muscle and as it was supposed to be surrounding tissues to jump higher, run faster, throw farther, or hit harder, depending on the desired training goal.

Definition of Calisthenics (wikipedia): calisthenics are exercises consisting of a variety of simple movements, usually performed without weights or equipment, that are intended to increase body strength and flexibility using the weight of one's own body for resistance. Repeated motions of calisthenics done over an extended period of time builds muscle endurance. These involves: sit ups, crunches, squats, push ups, calf raises, and dips.

I was an athlete in highschool and know what it takes to kick your body into shape. Yes, 75% of it is a change in eating habits, but the other 25% is a change mentally and spiritually. I am a believer in this all the way...

I know there are days when you don't feel like getting out of bed.. if that's the case, go right after work, make it a part of your daily schdeule. I am not a morning person, so I make sure to go after work. Rest in between strength training (24hours), and try cardio on your off days.

Walking at a slow speed on a treadmill for 1 hour will not change your body! You have to challenge your body to do excercises and movements never done before. You have to move past your plateau. You have to do this for you....

Food Tip: After strength training, make sure you are eating protein. The amount you need varies by weight, but it is a critical element in building new muscle after working out.

I am not a trained dietician or trainer... but I can offer free advice to anyone who would like it.

Inauguration Party for the People

Interrupting your regularly scheduled program to bring you a news announcement from your friendly neighborhood event planner...

I am going to a fabulous Inauguration Party @ Crystal City Sports Pub in Arlington, Virginia. It starts at 8:30 pm and is on Monday, January 19th.

The price is $65 in advance and $75 at the door -- save those 10 bucks during this cheerless economy...reserve early and easily all you can eat and drink bottled and draft beer, wine and rail cocktails as well as a variety of politically correct (and elegant) hors d'oeuvres.

The attire for the event is semi-formal. There will be a DJ, a photographer and a guest speaker which includes former Washington Reskins player Doc Walker! This is something you don't want to miss. If you are like me, and don't want to venture into D.C. for the $250 price tags and no way out... THIS IS THE BALL FOR YOU!!

* Speaking of attire... this is the dress I am wearing. It is by a designer named Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique, it fits like a dream... the color is called Berry Berry, and it is a red sherry wine color. The fit is close to the bodice, with ruching across the middle and the lower back draws the waist in. The bottom half of the dress fits close, but there is an invisible slip underneath that smooths everything out. Her dresses can be purchased at Nordstroms, Macy's, shopstyle.com, and various other websites. I find that her dresses are flattering and fit well for all body types. Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique is a special line she also sells dresses under the name Suzi Chin.

If you are trying to figure out which direction to head in for inauguration balls, do something different, don't go for black, and have fun!

I bought a second dress, that I know I am wearing. Please see below, it's by BCBG, its long and winter white and black. The dress is silk chiffon, and the print is a paisley, and the bodice is boned. Below is the dress, which can be found at Nordstroms and BCBG. Too many decisions...

I have never purchased more dresses than I have this year for party festivities. I do not like dresses and I rarely wear them... but when the time comes, and it has this year a few times, I step it out and make sure my dress game is on point. I buy dresses that fit my shape and skin tone. No side stepping on that.... I often assist my friends and family with fashion advice, becasue I can just see it... and I love it! If you need help... just ask!!

Friends and True Friends

This blog is about the one aspect of being a friends that really makes you a true friend. Part of being a true friend, is telling your friends the truth. Now, this doesn't mean tell them they are fat whales when they try on a dress (tell them to try on another dress).... but rather more along the lines of, when they are dating a guy/lady and about to make a mistake/or making mistakes, you are the only voice of reason in their lives. The only one who will tell them to their face something they probably don't want to hear, but need to hear... this type of relationship is judgment free, and only involves loyalty and honesty...

Honesty is the baseline for all healthy relationships because it gives rise to trust and trust eventually builds respect. At times it might be hard to tell your friend the truth, however if you phrase it in a manner that comes from concern and respect, you will most likely welcome positive feedback opposed to a defensive response.

Remind your friends that you respect them enough to let them know the truth even if it hurts. Emphasize that your true friends tell you things you don't want to hear to save them the embarrassment of discovery from those who want to conspire against them.

Sometimes your friends will not take well to your honesty. Respect the way they perceive what you have to say to them and don't judge their response to you. Allow them to feel mad or upset or frustrated. Being a good friend is being honest and then being their for your friend when that honesty is a blow to their emotions. However, if being honest with someone doesn't work out, e.g. it backfires, do not take it personally, usually this person is not your real friend and enjoys having dishonest people around them keeping them up on a pedal stool....

I'm just saying...

You toil with telling your friend the truth, opposed to avoiding the truth to spare their feelings. Being honest with your friend becomes a tug of war of morals and salvaging what you are afraid to unveil.

It takes times to develop honest and sincere friendship, they will not fall out of the sky, however, having a honest friend, will reveal the fake friends in the process...

To me, you cannot be good friends, without being an honest friend.

This day in history, November 4, 2008, a day before the new President will be announced, a day when all could be changed forever, I actually felt it in the air this morning, right before I voted. My roommate and I woke up at 5:15 am ( it was tough) and made it out of the house by 5:30 am, and then arrived at the polling place at 5:37 am... it was still dark outside and the polls didn't officially open until 6:00 am. There was a news camera present... and we tried to hide as best we could... with no luck.

We were not the first in line, but the line at this time wasn't that long, we predicted a 45-minute wait. When the polls opened, the line moved very fast, when we entered the polling place, the lines were separated by alphabet, A-G, H-O, P-Z... my roommate was near the front of th eline in her her letter category P, I was 5 minutes behind her in the B category. It took no less than 25-minutes from wait time to vote, I was the 72nd person to vote at the polling in Virginia today... I even had time for a free Starbucks... (oh and there are also free Krispy Kreme doughnuts for those that vote today.

So, for those of you who cast your vote, you know the magnitude of what was done today...

Oh and did I mention, I am in a battle ground state Virginia...

Tomorrow I will post one word... either Victory or Failure....

What Every Male Bathroom Needs...

Edge Designs is an all-women run company that designs interior office space had a recent opportunity to do an office project in NYC.

The client, also a company that was also run by all women execs, allowed the women of this company a free hand in all design aspects.

The result:
We all know that men never talk or look at each other...
And never laugh much in the restroom...
The men's room is a serious and quiet place...

But now, with the addition of one mural on the wall, let's just say the men's restroom is a place of laughter and smiles ... and a few winks and nudges!

Project Runway: Season Finale

Ok- first things first, I disagreed with the judges, Korto should have won. Leanne is a great architect of fashion, but her clothing was a bit -- one noted, although there were some great pieces I loved in her collection. I will post my fav's after the jump!

I want to discuss for a moment, Kenley's complete lack of ability to not steal/copy/channel other designers in her collections. Also, if I ever have to hear her whiny, nasal channeling voice again, I think I will dig my ear drums out...

Let's take a look at her wedding dress from the final collection and Alexander McQueen's Red Ostrich Feather wedding dress from his Fall Ready-to-Wear 2008 Line:

Do we see the similarities...?? I think so. And below are more pieces from his line... in case you needed more evidence.

Now that my evidence has been clearly out, I'll move on to some of my favorites from the other two designers, Korto and Leanne.

The blue dress below by Leanne moved so beautifully... I have to say. And I liked her wedding dress the best... period. I still feel as though Korto should have won.

And this gorgeous green dress from Korto... was subtly fierce and sheek...

The jewels around the neckline are to die for and the halter style makes will make any woman appear to have fabulous shoulders.

This blue number was liquid on her body... caught my eye immediately!

Open Letter to Heidi Montag

Dear Heidi,

I have been watching 'The Hills' as well as 'Laguna Beach' since the beginning. I have no malice or ill will towards you in the least. Although, there were a couple situations that you were involved in e.g. Jenn Bunny Birthday episode and confronting Lauren on a few occasions, that I really didn't care for -- and raised my eyebrows at you. WHAT actually made me physically sick, is the fact that you decided to stay in a relationship with SP, who 1. cheated on you w/several chicks, including playboy bunny's 2. is always condescending 3. shows you NO respect, except when your mouth is closed and you are obeying 4. doesn't want you to have any other friends, besides him, which is a classic trait of an abuser and 5. disrepects not just your sister but your MOM... COME ON HEIDI!!! WAKE THE HELL UP AND SNAP OUT OF IT!! He does nothing for your career and people loathe you becasue of it. I reallly reallly wish you could see the silver lining in getting rid of him as your boyfriend... he is garbage.

So, in conclusion, my sentiment is the same as many others out there, they like you, but wonder what keeps you attached to such a hateful person. The main reason SP doesn't like Lauren, is becasue she was able to call him out, becasue his sh** stank.

Please Heidi, let him go....
