I ♥ Charlyne Yi. She's is unapologetic in her awkwardness, funny in a weird way and 100% awesome. I'm more apologetically awkward than not so I look up to her and I'm embracing it more. She's also in quite a few of my favourite movies.

Falling in love remotely is something I'm definitely not foreign to. I didn't have as much apprehension about meeting a "stranger" as I probably should have but... I didn't die. Maybe it's because I'm a guy or maybe because I'm naive. Doesn't matter now.

You know what's the worst kind of loneliness? My guess is that it's the loneliness of an introvert. The loneliness of someone who can feel alone in a crowd. The sad thing is that the introvert tends to steadily build a wall around them, so if one starts digging themselves into a lonely hole, they might start to lose themselves.

The solution: learn how to be alone again. Yes, you're there already but you're doing it wrong. If you learn to be content with yourself, you'd be surprised at how those walls will break down. They'll deteriorate and fall because you won't need them anymore. You'll rise from that hole and you'll learn how to be happy with yourself alone and be happy with yourself alone, in a crowd.

I leave hidden messages for all of you followers.

Just a Band released another music video! It's actually a collaboration for BLNRB, a project between artistes from the Berlin and Nairobi music scene with the video made by Just a Band.

The real story seems guarded by the creators but features a mysterious concealed object much like Pulp Fiction or Se7en. The female aggressor and the Chinese(?) fusion even seems Tarantino-esue. If anybody could provide a translation(please) maybe a bit more of the story could be revealed.

It's a few months old and they actually released one more since then but I've been playing it on repeat recently so why not feature it for this week's Soft Sweet Slow Song Sunday. Plus it was uploaded on my birthday last year so that was pretty awesome. Anyway, Happy New Year!

Though invisible to most outside of the "biz", ordinary folk definitely feel a music elf's presence. Music elves truly embody music and this SebastiAn video just illustrates that.

I was having another night staying up doing nothing important. Just finished watching Defranco Does Dublin and I was thinking I should probably go to sleep now. Buuuut.... just didn't wanna... Why though?

Suddenly, BOOM! I remembered a few nights ago I actually did go to bed early when I had not much else to do. Or rather I went "to sleep", going "to bed" with my laptop on is a different situation. Point is, I couldn't sleep. I had my eyes closed, lying in bed for what seemed like at least over an hour. Maybe two.

It was finally all kind of clear. This is why I stay up all the time. It's hard to fall asleep unless my eyes get too heavy to keep open. Armed with new knowledge, the question is no longer "why don't I want to go to sleep at night?" and is instead "why do I find it so hard to fall asleep?". Inconsequential to most I'm sure but for me... GROWTH!

Sleep, my love, we can fix this! We can make it work!

Oh, I haven't forgotten about the blog and haven't abandoned it. In fact I return so often. I just couldn't push myself to create more regardless of the ideas I had.

This blog became work. Your blog should never be considered work or it's bound to fail. Rather than force myself to produce something, I waited & allowed myself to dream again.

Guide needed for socially misguided youth who needs help figuring out humans as social beings. Pay?: "It's own reward"?

Awkward...

I lag behind when it comes to social situations. I can relate to Socially Awkward Penguin way too often. I'm introverted so I know I will never really be a socialite. That's not what I want to be anyway; I only need to at least learn how to react in common social situations, right?

I lived in isolated environments for most of my life, which I assume helped to form my personality. I grew to love it even though it lead to less social interactions than I probably needed when I was younger. Social interactions that, might I add, can teach you certain things.

I realized recently that I'm the youngest person on the main staff at my work place. In many situations there's a generation gap but there's a little something else. A level of social interaction that I missed the lesson on, constantly reaffirming my naivete.

Which Button Makes Me Social?

I never had somebody that I really wanted to be like at any point in my life; I had nobody to emulate. I thrust myself into social situations and hope I figure out how to swim. Luckily, I float along but there's always some key I'm missing. A key that I'm sure one can't figure out on their own.

I've had to socialize myself, pretty much. I picked and chose stray parts for my enigma of a personality from experiences I never quite got right or things I saw on tv. I have no strict personal code. I'm way too tolerant of everything. I let little things get to me. And don't get me started on this concept of amorous love. I'm not completely sure what I stand for and you know where that leads...

This Looks Like a Job For..

That's why I think I need some kind of guru to point me in the right direction. I'm relatively young and I know there are people older than me who've been past this. I'm seeking somebody to impart their hindsight. Applications are open. Seriously (kind of)... email on the about page

Cvrbrthrs (coverbrothers minus the vowels) is Andre K. Lai and Michael Sheng with the help from some of their friends recording at their home in Canada using normal instruments, unique instruments and whatever they can find around the house to make sounds. They describe themselves as "a couple of Asians covering popular songs from different genres in their own weirdo fashion."

Possibilities But...

Just a Band is a great, relatively unknown group from Kenya much like Jamaica's own Acmatic who have a fresh sound that is uncharacteristic of their respective country's popular music. The "If I Could" music video juxtaposes a young man and woman going through eerily similar morning routines. It ends with them both at the bus stop, covertly fascinated by the other but inevitably ending the story as a "missed connection". It's a song about possibilities, of "if I could" and in the case of the video, "what if I did?."

"But...?"

What would you do if you could? A lot, I'm sure but... That's the virus. "But" is a nasty 3 letter word. That seemingly insignificant word is more dangerous than just a conjunction. It's a double edged sword.

"I... But..."

Just the use of the word "but" limits our possibilities. "I could but...", "I wanted it but...", "I was going to but...". It's a learned crutch for the English speaker to drop the word into their sentence, deferring what is possible. It creates a personal boundary if you even think it because you start to think of excuses.

"Yes... But..."

Don't think "but" only affects us, the but-er. It creates trouble in conversation too. Envision a discussion or argument between yourself and another. This second person states an opinion. In reply, you could do a few things including to:

Agree completely
Disagree completely
Agree to some extent and cite additional information or views

If you agree or disagree completely your position should be clear. On the other hand, if you partially agree and in adding to your reply use "but", the second person subconsciously hears "I disagree, let me tell you why you're wrong". We have grown to associate "but" with various types of opposition.

No Buts

Let's try the impossible. Remove "but" from our vocabulary. Find creative ways around it. This is far from easy and you may not be able to do it completely, I definitely haven't. Trust me though, it's satisfying not hearing yourself say it. Whatever you express will sound different, more possible and more clear. What's there to lose besides three letters?

I believe there's a threshold that, once exceeded, allows you to work for as long as your body can hold up. I passed this threshold a few times & always reaped great rewards... then met a huge crash afterwards. But being pushed to go past this threshold is catalyzed by external forces such as the pressure of a deadline. I for one, don't like being so worn out working like this that I end up out cold for hours.

Sadly I was one of those children who was told they were "smart" & told they should be able to do some things with ease. Dear parents, this is BAD. I tried to play this down but it still got to my subconscious & now I have trouble putting effort into anything I'm not immediately good at. Since I recognized this, I want to figure out how to put my all into something without being forced. I've realized this isn't easy. At least for me.

I'm open to suggestions because I know that I should be capable of much more. I don't know if it's because of a fear of failure or maybe a lack of passion, inspiration or motivation. Whatever it is about me though, I want to change it or I might end up shafted in the long turn.

Overwhelmed - tired and stressed with a desk full of work in front of me and a deadline breathing down my shoulders. Overwhelmed because I once sliced a training dummy into pieces so they believed I'm now a warrior, handed me a sword and pushed me into war. More on that overestimation after this battle is over which, I hope for my sake, is soon. For now I just felt the need to use that weapon mightier than the sword.

The title of this leak and the included song tells what's on my mind and its sound illustrates how my thoughts now feel. It chops and screws samples from three songs I always liked, including Eminem's Lose Yourself, which has been echoing in against my thoughts recently like a cry from my subconscious, along with Notorious B.I.G.'s Party and BS and Guns N' Roses' Sweet Child O' Mine.

A challenge has appeared! A challenge that has requires much energy in an ongoing battle. I knew it would appear one day and adaptability is how I must prove myself. And I must adapt since the only constant in life is ironically change.

Mind Leakings was sadly overshadowed in the midst of this battle but far from forgotten! I tried to make a post weeks ago. I had all my thoughts down and everything I needed to put it together but I just couldn't make it work. For the first time I hit a writing wall.

I wanted this blog to be quick, simple and easy to read with some relevant aesthetics. Overtime, my writing developed and so did my word count. With the increase in word count came an increase in the time and mental resources needed to develop a post. I have less of these resources to spare now so I had to search for a way to adapt using what was left.

This will be a reset. Something that you need to do every now and then and how I choose to adapt. Going back to the basic concept, keeping focus but with renewed perspective. A return to level 1 with all the wisdom and experience gained. The theory is that this should allow blogging to grow and fit naturally into a new lifestyle. Hopefully this theory proves to be true.

I've watched this short comedy several times. Every time I'm about to watch it, I look at the length and think that 16 minutes is pretty long and every time, by the end, I wonder if it was really only 16 minutes. It's a charming story that flows really well.

I think we all seek for some kind of proof that what we're doing is right or worth it and not just pointless. Not necessarily "social proof", which I often detest. I hate the idea that people like something simply because because others like it but unfortunately conformity seems to be only human. Persons should love something because they genuinely find it worthy of love. When this love or appreciation is genuinely shown it can make a difference.

We should all take time out to tell someone that we appreciate what they're doing or simply who they are. You can never tell what that little gesture can do for somebody. I want to try to make a conscious effort to do just that. Maybe it's just my nature but I think this might be a difficult thing to consciously and genuinely do, but I'll definitely try.

I've finally gotten around to a new look for the blog. At first I was just trying to come up with a new idea for a banner (for months). I thought the previous banner was starting to look bland. It was pale and flat and I wouldn't want that to turn away visitors without gaining the interest of potential readers. I came up with the concept for the background and everything else flowed relatively easy.

The new banner is used to emphasize two of the main elements of the blog, music and photography. Sticking to the leak theme, The Mind Leakings title drips to water into the background. The concept behind the water in the background is that it is the collected leaks(posts) filling the blog, causing water to rise. The number of posts on the main page have also been reduced which should mean less loading for you readers when you visit.

There have been a few more additions to the blog which readers may have already noticed.

Twitter updates "Live Mind Leak" are now on the side. For those tweeps who for some reason would like to know what's on my mind more often.
Popular posts for the past week are now displayed on the side.
Linkwithin widget added, recommending older posts newer readers may not have seen.
Disqus commenting added. This allows you to connect more types of accounts for commenting including facebook and Twitter, if you aren't already logged into Disqus that is.
Addthis sharing is enabled for sharing to nearly any platform you'd want to, which you should.
The simple facebook "like" button was added to each post.

I haven't been consistently posting twice weekly like I wanted to but I still try to keep a good flow of content monthly. Just in case you didn't notice the last time I posted, I posted two related posts: Wise Men Said... and Wise Men Reworded. Check them out if you haven't already.

Many people do live by the words of others. However, words are and always will be simply that: words. They can be interpreted, misinterpreted and reinterpreted. These words can be rewritten by those who want to pave a new path, building on the foundations of the wise before them.

The words of another person may not be tailor fitted to your life and you will therefore sometimes have to adapt them and then reapply them. Even the words I have chosen to represent myself can be built on by me, the one who uses them to illustrate what he believes. I've chosen the words that I subscribed to and I've made them my own. Adding my own thoughts and a little humour.

Wise Men Said...

Wise men say wise words that will be recounted endlessly. One can often live by one mans words, a single thing that one person said to illustrate his own thoughts or experiences. Just a few short words can affect one person profoundly. It may be a simple, beautiful or witty metaphor or something that helps you define your beliefs.

A key element of this blog has been the inclusion of someone else's words. Someone who I consider to have said something much better than I have or could. These are some of those words that I have used to help define me, though that definition is still incomplete. They are words that I thought were useful in explaining my choice of actions. All of them are quotes I collected up to a point to represent what I believed or simply just particularly liked.

In the order of my discovery of them:

Dear mind, my soul would like to know what's happening inside you... How about your two cents, God?

I often worry about conflicting perceptions of my self. The way I see myself and the way I behave change situationally. There's the me that needs a plan and the me that acts from impulse. There's the monster, that maybe none knew of, who feeds off the insecurities of others, smiling inside, condescending, because you're weaker than me. Building false confidence and humbling in the presence of true confidence or the unknown. I'd still sniff for that food though, reading non-verbal speech like plain English and taking that quiet shouting personal. Not an uncontrollable alter ego like Dr. Jekyll's Hyde or Bruce Banner's Hulk but more like Scott Pilgrim's Nega Scott, the embodiment of insecurities. The other side that taunts me, telling me how I should have done things.

My overactive thought processes are always running. Running through situational parallels in the worst way possible(To those Computer Science savvy, it's a breadth first search), rarely having time to come to a conclusion, consequently leaving me hesitant and indecisive, slow to react when the thoughts start to argue. I've been told to flip a coin when indecisive, not that the coin's outcome will choose for you but because in that brief moment before it falls you'll truly know what you wanted.

It would be so convenient if conflicting thoughts and emotions could just step outside of the mind, sit, sip some tea or some of their favourite spirit. Putting differences on the table, weighing relevant points of view like grown folk and coming to a confident, unwavering decision. I'd think, cooler me, take over for this one.

However, I come to the conclusion I often do when I think about these things: "Life doesn't work like that does it?". The best I can do is dispatch some prayer and hold a medi'. Sorting it out in the same place all these thoughts are trapped...

If your life was a movie what would the soundtrack be? I was asked that question as my friend displayed her own version of this list some time ago via facebook. I was tagged in the note and slightly nudged (unnecessarily) to make a list myself. I was at it instantly.
