We have just received the two latest issues of Cria Cuervos as well as Equerre by Loïc Doudou. These artzines were all hand screen printed and assembled by Lokoto and are now all available in our online shop.

Temps d'Arts

Voici un petit aperçu de l'événement les Temps d'Arts organisé par Art'Inseec à la Halle des Chartrons jeudi dernier sur le thème du street art. La galerie Mind The Wall était présente avec une exposition de sérigraphies des artistes bordelais Specio, Double Bob, Loïc Doudou etc. réalisées par Mehdi.

Here are a few photos from the event Temps d'Arts which took place last Thursday in the Chartrons area of Bordeaux. This years theme was loosely based around street art and hence Mind the Wall were invited to show a selection of its limited edition prints by Bordeaux-based artists Mehdi, Specio, Loïc Doudou, Mt. as well as others from further afield like Double Bob and Franeck. Incidentally they were all lovely screen printed by Mehdi Beneitez.

C'était aussi l'opportunité de voir le travail remarquable des photographes urbains Julien Diez et Mike Palace ainsi que les toiles des Skinjackin. Tout cela ponctué des interventions de beatbox et breakdance de la Smala, ainsi que du groupe electro acoustique Smokey Joe and the Kid. On a passé une très bonne soirée.

Also present at the event were urbain photographers Julien Diez and Mike Palace as well as canvases by the SkinJackin' crew. Other highlights included some enthusiastic beat-boxers and break-dancers, and the electro-acoustic duo Smokey Joe and the Kid. All in all a very pleasant evening.

Merci à Julie et à toute l'équipe d'Art'Inseec pour leur accueil chaleureux et chapeau bas pour l'organisation, pro jusqu'au bout des doigts!

Accident de chasse // Hunting accident

Exhibition of contemporary/urban drawings by Specio and Yoko Nono currently showing at the St Christophe, a small bar at the bottom of St James street in Bordeaux.

On a eu la chance de pouvoir venir au vernissage le vendredi 4 février et d'apprécier, en plus des œuvres accrochées, la performance de Balafre.

Luck had it we were able to attend the opening night on the 4th February and enjoy, not only the artwork on display, but also a performance by Balafre.

Il s'agit d'une confrontation réussie entre différent médias. Des projections vidéo de dessins collectifs en process se mêlent avec les textes de Specio lus en direct par lui même, accompagnés de la musique de Llcool Jo.

It consisted of an adept mixed media setup, with a video showing speeded-up collaborative drawings/paintings, texts written and read out live by Specio, all accompanied by Llcool Jo's experimental electronic music.

Serigraphik

Vendredi dernier Mind the Wall est allé faire un tour du côté de la rue de Candale à Total Heaven pour le vernissage de l'expo Serigrafik des Editions du Parasite à l'occasion du lancement de leurs dernières parutions, "Equerre" de Loïc Doudou, "À poil # 3" et Cria Cuervos #4 (collectif).

Last Friday Mind the Wall went to check out the opening night of Editions du Parasite's (Mehdi Beneitez) 'Serigraphik' exhibition which included the launch of their latest handmade books "Equerre" by Loïc Doudou, "À poil #3" and "Cria Cuervos #4" (various).

Ces graphzines underground autoproduits par Mehdi Beneitez ont la particularité d'être entièrement sérigraphiés ce qui en fait de véritables objets d'art, de même que les sérigraphies originales que l'ont peut voir aux murs signées entre autre Havec, Gwenola Carrere, Doublebob, Specio, Loic Doudou...

Medhi's graphzine are entirely screen printed by hand and are generally limited to no more than 100 copies. The prints, displayed on the walls of this record-shop-by-day, are also all screen printed by Mehdi with artwork by Havec, Gwenola Carrere, Doublebob, Specio, Loic Doudou...

Et tout cela accompagné de Chocolat Billy, rumba punk catholique, toujours avec Mehdi, qui fait aussi partie du groupe. Vive le DIY!

The evening included a live performance by Chocolat Billy (Rumba/Punk/Catholique), Mehdi is also part of the group. Man of many talents!

Pour les malchanceux qui n'ont pas pu assister au vernissage, l'expo se poursuit jusqu'au 15 mars.

For those who missed the opening, not to worry, you can go and see it up until the 15th March.

On s'écarte de Noël, avant-goût // Xmas card sneak peek

Noël approche comme nous le rappelle les guirlandes qui clignotent dans tous les sens, les sapins, les grosses boules... C'est aussi le moment d'envoyer des cartes de vœux. Mais bon on en avait marre du style paillettes alors on a décidé de faire appel à des artistes pour créer des cartes alternatives et locales sur le thème "On s'écarte de Noël". Specio, Yoko Nono, Mehdi, Derik et MT ont sorti leur crayons et le résultat est un pack de 6 cartes (on n'a pas oublié les enveloppes avec) limité à 30 exemplaires. Elle sont présentées dans un étui en carton recyclé, numéroté et sérigraphié à la main par l'association Lokoto.

Flashing coloured lights and lots of shiny things... yes Christmas is upon us, and if you haven't already done so, it's time to send out your greeting cards. Luckily, for those looking for something different, Mind the Wall has teamed with 5 French artists to produce a set of cards based on the theme "On s'écarte de Noël" (we move away from Christmas). Specio, Yoko Nono, Mehdi, Derik and MT have all come up with an original piece of artwork (2 in the case of Specio) to form a pack of 6 cards (no we haven't forgotten the envelopes!) limited to 30 copies. They are presented in a thick recycled cardboard sleeve with a screen print on the front and the edition number on the reverse.

Stokes Croft ou l'underground de Bristol // Stokes Croft, Bristol's cultural quarter

On ne peut pas parler du street art à Bristol sans évoquer le quartier de Stokes Croft où l'on trouve la plus grande concentration de street art au mètre carré. Officiellement quartier malfamé, Stokes Croft est devenu un lieu culturel incontournable de la scène bristolienne, non seulement grâce aux pièces de street art qu'on peut y trouver mais parce que la volonté et le soutien des habitants ont permis de créer des projets localement.

It's hard to talk about street art in Bristol without evoking Stokes Croft, the quarter which has, without a doubt, the most street art per square foot. Seen by some as a rough part of town, Stokes Croft is now fast becoming a cultural hub and not only because of the street art that can be found there but also because of the solidarity and willingness of the local residents to make things happen.

Il faut préciser que Stokes Croft est un territoire indépendant ayant la particularité d'être autogéré par les Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft depuis 2008, une association fondée et dirigée par Chris Chalkley qui encourage la liberté d'expression et l'activisme artistique. C'est donc naturellement que les street artistes locaux dont Sepr, Cheo, 3Dom, Paris et plein d'autres ont investi les murs du quartier, sachant qu'ils auraient carte blanche.

It must be said that Stokes Croft has the particularity of almost being a self contained district in that it is self-managed since 2008 by the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC), an organisation founded and run by Chris Chalkley that encourages free expression and cultural activism. Naturally this has greatly encouraged local artists such as Sepr, Cheo, 3Dom, Paris and many others to come and paint its walls, knowing that very often they would have total freedom to do so.

Néanmoins, l'aspect délabré de Stokes Croft avec ses bâtiments abandonnés et ses boutiques fermées est ce qui a initialement attiré les street artistes. Les pièces emblèmatiques d'artistes comme Banksy et Burning Candy ont sans aucun doute contribué à la notoriété de Stokes Croft. "Mild Mild West" de Banksy est probablement la plus connue, mais celle de Burning Candy (Rowdy, Sweet Toof et Cyclops) est certainement la plus impressionnante à cause de l'échelle et de sa localisation. Elle est située sur les hauteurs d'un bloc d'anciens bureaux abandonnés depuis 1986 (Westmoreland House) et surplombe la ville.

But even before the presence of PRSC, Stokes Croft was already a coveted spot for street artists, no doubt attracted by the painting spots offered by the many boarded up facades and abandoned buildings. Two of the Croft's most iconic pieces, which no doubt contributed greatly to the areas notoriety, were painted on derelict buildings. Banksy's 'Mild Mild West' mural is probably the best known, but Burning Candy's (Rowdy, Sweet Toof & Cyclops) piece is certainly the most impressive due to its scale and positioning. It sits high up on the roof of Westmoorland House and is visible from some distance.

L'identité culturelle de Stokes Croft a été menacée à plusieurs reprises par des projets de rénovations mais ces tentatives ont toujours avortées en raison de l'opposition des habitants et des défenseurs du quartier. Là encore il est question d'implanter un supermarché Tesco (l'équivalent de notre Carrouf' national). En réaction, The people of Republic of Stokes Croft ont produit ce gigantesque mural collectif qui incite à faire opposition au projet auprès de la mairie et à favoriser les commerces locaux. L'autorisation de peindre a été donné par l'association Love Bristol et l'œuvre est signée par les artistes Sepr pour le personnage et Epok pour le lettrage.

The integrity of Stokes Croft has been put under threat at various points by renovation projects but so far none of these have succeeded thanks to the defiance of the local residents and those who feel strongly about the area. Recently though there have been plans to build a Tesco supermarket in the area. In reaction, The Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft created a giant mural stating that 97% of locals were opposed and calling for people to attend an organised protest. The mural was painted by Sepr (character) and Epok (lettering), permission was granted by Love Bristol.

Nouveaux t-shirts d'artistes // New artist tees

Comme promis, Mind the Wall aggrandit sa collection de t-shirts. Au menu des artistes tels que Will Barras, Xenz, Eco, Paris Hair et Pinky. Tous issus de la scène street art bristolienne et londonienne, ils ont chacun développé leur propre style. Ils ont participé à des expositions et évènements à l'échelle internationale, notamment en Europe, aux Etats-Unis et au Japon pour certains d'entre eux.

As promised, Mind the Wall is expanding its range of tshirts. New designs are by Will Barras, Xenz, Eco, Paris Hair and Pinky, all of whom have been involved in the street art scene in either Bristol or London. These renowned artists have all participated in exhibition and events internationally, most notably in Europe, the United States and even Japan for some of them.

Les t-shirts sont sérigraphiés à la main avec signature de l'artiste. On peut les commander sur la shop en ligne de Mind the Wall. Il y a très peu de stock restant donc nous vous conseillons de ne pas trop attendre si vous voyez quelque chose qui vous plaît.

The tshirts are handprinted and include the artist's signature on the lower right corner. They can now be ordered from our online shop, but there are very few of each available and some sizes have already sold out, so if there is something that you like I wouldn't hang around too long.

Soirée de lancement du t-shirt "Shiny Happy Pipoule" // Launch of the "Shiny Happy Pipoule" tshirt

Le 21 octobre a été une soirée réussie pour Mind the Wall qui a choisi l'Apollo bar à Bordeaux pour présenter "Shiny Happy Pipoule" le t-shirt que nous a pondu Mr Poulet en exclusivité.

"Shiny Happy Pipoule", the tshirt designed exclusively by Mr Poulet for Mind the Wall, was launched on 21 October at the Apollo Bar in Bordeaux.

C'était l'occasion de réunir les fans de la galerie et de Mr Poulet autour d'un verre et d'un jeu-concours où il fallait retrouver des petits poulets cachés dans la rue, collés par l'artiste. Le premier arrivant au bar avec preuve photographique gagnait un t-shirt, les quatre suivants un pack goodies Mr Poulet. Encore félicitations à Jessica, notre heureuse gagnante. Un grand merci au staff de l'Apollo, qui en passant font de supers bons mojitos!

The event was a chance for us to meet some of our online followers, as well as Mr Poulet's fans and to present our full range of limited edition tees. A competition, with a Mr Poulet tee up for grabs, was also organised in which you had to be the first to bring us a photo of one of five chickens that Mr Poulet had pasted-up in a nearby street. The next four people won a Mr Poulet goodie pack. Congratulations to Jessica, the winner of the tshirt and thanks again to the Apollo bar staff for their help and their delicious mojitos!

Rencontre Spéciale avec Specio // Special meeting with Specio

C'est dans son appartement de St Mich' que nous rencontrons Specio autour d'un échange à propos du street art à Bordeaux. Brigades anti-tags et politique de rénovation font qu'il devient de plus en plus difficile de trouver des lieux d'expression pour les street artistes. Il reste les terrains vagues en banlieue qui ne présentent pas grand intérêt pour Specio puisque c'est là qu'on s'attend à trouver du street art. A part les amateurs et photographes pas grand monde ne s'y promène. Ce qui importe pour Specio c'est l'interaction crée par le street art avec les passants et la vie de quartier.

It's in his apartment in the St Michel quarter that we meet up with Specio to discuss Bordeaux street art. At present anti-graffiti units and urban renovation mean it's more and more difficult to find places for street artists to express themselves. Of course there are still the abandonned areas on the outskirts, but these don't interest Specio much as they are the places where you expect to see street art. And apart from enthusiates and photographers hardly anyone goes there. Specio is far more interested in the dialogue created between street art and passers-by, especially the local residents.

Ces limitations ne freinent pas sa créativité, au contraire, elles obligent à trouver d'autres moyens d'apréhender la rue. En faisant parler les boîtes au lettres d'un simple contour blanc les transformant en personnages et les pavés avec des mots, Specio se concentre sur autre chose dans la rue : les petits détails plutôt que les grands murs.

Thankfully these recent limitations haven't restricted Specio's creativity, on the contrary they have made him look for new ways of interacting with the street. So by creating faces from letter boxes and sentences on paving stones, all using the simplest of white lines, Specio turns his attention to other aspects of the street: the small details instead of the large walls.

ll y a quelques années, le mouvement street art était beaucoup plus présent à Bordeaux. Une pièce de street art pouvait rester visible et intacte plusieurs semaines. Specio réalise alors beaucoup de collages ainsi que des peintures avec de drôles d'oiseaux et des bonhommes étranges, des agents specio observant la rue.

A few years ago Bordeaux had a really vibrant street art scene. Pieces in the street would remain untouched for as long as a few weeks. At this time Specio was creating a lot of paste-ups as well as paintings of strange birds and weird, almost child-like characters, his special agents that observe the street.

Actuellement Specio fait parti du collectif De Mèche et figure dans l'exposition "Punitions" à Paris jusqu'au 30 aôut à L'Atelier(s) du Figuier avec LL Cool Jo, Loïc Doudou, Havec, Leto, Papa Jazzy et Joris Goulenok. On peut aussi voir son travail dans plusieurs numéros du fanzine ultra-graphique Graisse Animale.

Presently Specio is part of a collective called De Mèche and features in the group exhibition in Paris until 30 August at L'atelier(s) du Figuier entitled "Punitions" with LL Cool Jo, Loïc Doudou, Havec, Leto, Papa Jazzy et Joris Goulenok. His work can also be seen in various issues of Graisse Animale, an ultra-graphic fanzine.

Pour son lancement, Mind The Wall sort, en partenariat avec la marque indépendante AnyForty, une édition limitée de t-shirts réalisés par deux artistes incontournables de la scène bristolienne.

For its launch, the urban art gallery Mind the Wall, in conjunction with the independent brand AnyForty, is releasing a set of limited edition tshirts by two prominent street artists from the Bristol scene.

Le t-shirt "Two Guns Up" a été créé par l'artiste 45RPM connu pour son armée de chouettes disséminée un peu partout dans les rues de Bristol. Il peut peindre à peu près n'importe où avec une préférence pour les grands murs. Il se remarque par son style de lettrage particulier.

The "Two guns up" tshirt design was created by the artist 45RPM, who is particularly well-known for owl paintings that have appeared in many places across Bristol. He can paint pretty much anywhere, but has a preference for large walls. He also has a distinctive style of lettering that make his pieces stand out.

Le t-shirt "War and Peace" a été illustré à la main par l'artiste Richt. Sa patte se reconnaît par son dessin au contour affirmé et ses univers psychédéliques. Richt a exposé en Angleterre mais aussi en Europe. En 2007 il a été publié dans "Street Sketchbook" chez l'éditeur Thames and Hudson, qui l'a amené à se faire connaître d'un plus large public.

The "War and peace" tshirt design was hand drawn by the artist Richt. His style of drawing with its bold lines and psychedelic feel lead the viewer into a personal and strange world. Richt has exhibited in the UK as well as Europe. In 2007 his work was published in the book "Street Sketchbook" by Thames and Hudson, which opened him to a wider audience.

Les t-shirts sont tirés en édition limitée à 20 exemplaires dans un atelier de sérigraphie artisanale (vidéo de la fabrication en-dessous). Ils sont introuvables ailleurs, du moins en France, alors hurry up!

Both tshirts were lovingly screen printed by hand in Bristol (making-of shown below) and are available exclusively in France via Mind the Wall. There are only 20 of each, so hurry up if you don't want to miss out.

45RPM et Richt sont tous les deux membres du collectif WHAT aux côtés des street artistes Sainty, Gumbo et Oath. Ils ont entre autre participé à l'exposition "Crimes of passion, street art in Bristol" à la Royal West Academy en 2009. Leur travail a été publié dans plusieurs livres et magasines, on peut citer "Children of the can", retrospective du street art à Bristol.

45RPM and Richt are both members of the WHAT collective along wtih Sainty, Gumbo and Oath. They participated in the exhibition "Crimes of passion, street art in Bristol" at the Royal West Academy in 2009 and their work has been published in various books and magazines, most notably "Children of the Can", a retrospective of Bristol street art and graffiti.

Après les rues de Bordeaux et d'Espagne où l'on a pu voir entre autre des séries de poulets, un caliméro et un avis de recherche pour son chat prénommé Ernest, Mr Poulet s'attaque à l'Angleterre.

After pasting artwork in the streets of Bordeaux and Spain, which included a series of chickens, a caliméro and a wanted poster for his cat named Ernest, Mr Poulet pays (h)England a visit.

C'est à Bristol que cette jeune petite poule a attéri plutôt qu'à Londres qui finalement n'était pas sa tasse de thé. Il faut dire aussi qu'il pleuvait des chats et des chiens et qu'elle n'avait pas envie d'être mouillée. La reine était très déçue de perdre une nouvelle recrue à Buckingham palace.

Bristol is his chosen location for this hen piece rather than London, which, as it turned out, wasn't his cup of tea. It must be said that it was also raining cats and dogs there, and he didn't fancy getting drenched. So sadly the Queen missed out on getting a new recruit for the Royal Guard.

"Hen Gland" s'est aussi faite remarquée par www.bristol-street.art.co.uk, site internet qui répertorie et cartographie les pièces de street art. Aux dernières nouvelles elle n'a pas bougée de Picton Lane, juste à côté du Bristolian café.

"Hen Gland" didn't go unnoticed and was spotted by www.bristol-street-art.co.uk, a website that catalogues and maps street art pieces from around Bristol, down Picton Lane right near the Bristolian café in Montpelier.
