ABC to announce second 'Roseanne' reboot with a Darlene spinoff?

In a bid to save thousands of people who lost their job following the abrupt cancellation of "Roseanne," sources reveal that ABC is working out a potential second reboot of the series.

TMZ reports that executives at ABC have been in talks with "Roseanne" producer Tom Werner over the weekend. The plan is to rebrand the series with Sara Gilbert's character, Darlene, leading the pack.

John Goodman apparently also expressed his willingness to be in the reboot, but there's a potential problem.

Roseanne Barr, who serves as an executive producer, still has her stamp in the reboot/spinoff. ABC might have to pay her a hefty fee before they could get the spinoff underway. An announcement from the network regarding the reboot/spinoff development should be confirmed within the week.

Meanwhile, Gilbert revealed in "The Talk" that she supports Barr's axing and the cancellation of "Roseanne."

"A lot of people have been hurt by this,” the actress said. “I will say I’m proud of the show we made,” she added. “This show has always been about diversity, love and inclusion, and it’s sad to see it end in this way.

"I’m sad for the people who lost their jobs in the process," the actress further said. "However, I do stand behind the decision ABC made.”

ABC fired Barr last week after she posted a racist comment, where she compared former President Barack Obama's adviser, Valerie Jarrett, to an ape. Joining the firestorm on Twitter after Barr's post, Gilbert posted, "This is incredibly sad and difficult," and separated herself from Barr's opinion.

Gilbert was also asked about the Darlene spinoff on "The Talk" but kept mum about the details.

'The Vampire Diaries' Reunion: Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley Hung Out One Year After TVD Ended

The Salvatore brothers from "The Vampire Diaries" had a reunion in Nashville last Feb. 10. Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) and Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) hung out together during a fan convention and posted a photo of their reunion on social media.

Somerhalder and Wesley were at "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Originals" Official Convention when they touched based and mingled with the participants. Those who couldn't make it to the convention, however, witnessed the TV brothers' reunion when Wesley shared their photo on his Instagram Story.

The image lit up social media as fans gawked and shared their reactions. After all, it's been one year since "The Vampire Diaries" folded up on The CW and fans have been missing the vampire brothers on the small screen.

There could be more of these cast reunions from "The Vampire Diaries" in the coming months, though. Creation Entertainment has schedules mapped out at different states until September.

Meanwhile, fans also learned another surprise when "The Vampire Diaries" showrunner Julie Plec confirmed that the beloved series has a connection to "Riverdale" apart from being both on The CW. The house that belonged to Cheryl and Penelope Blossom in the Archie Comics series adaptation used to be the Salvatore brother's house.

"I had seen Thistlehouse on camera but it hadn't registered with me," the showrunner told Bustle. "When we pulled up the driveway for the location scout to go see it, I was like, 'This is so familiar. I feel like I've been here before.'"

Plec detailed that when she got inside the house, she realized that they used the same property to film Damon and Stefan's place in the pilot episode of "The Vampire Diaries." Before the show moved to Atlanta for production, TVD had been filming in Vancouver, where "Riverdale" currently shoots.

"The Vampire Diaries" aired for eight seasons from 2009 to 2017. Aside from Somerhalder and Wesley, Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert) also made up the lead cast.

'Star Trek Discovery' Introduces Captain Pike and Spock; Who Will Play Them in Season 2?

Producers said that they planned on having these characters in the season 1 finale months ago.

Viewers of "Star Trek Discover" got a surprise when two familiar characters made their presence felt in the season finale. Captain Pike and Spock from the USS Enterprise sent out an emergency distress call that the Discovery intercepted.

The ending left open the question on every "Star Trek" fan's mind. Will "Star Trek Discover" feature Pike and Spock in season 2? If so, who will play the characters?

Showrunner and co-creator Alex Kurtzman clarified what the season 1 finale's ending meant in an interview with Variety. He made it clear that the show is still very much focused on Discovery and its characters in season 2, hence viewers might not necessarily have to see Pike or Spock in the flesh and in a current timeline.

Executive producer Aaron Haberts also told The Hollywood Reporter that they are not casting the roles for Pike and Spock as of this time. The EPs acknowledged that it will not be easy putting a new actor in the role of Spock, especially, given the impact of the previous actors who played the character -- Leonard Nimoy in the original series and films and Zachary Quinto in the rebooted movie franchise.

"Finding another actor that could even come close to what Leonard Nimoy did with the original portrayal, we'd never want to go down that road," Harbert said.

The producers, however, planned on introducing Pike and Spock at the end of season 1 months before filming the episode. They hinted that more than Spock, Pike's presence might be more significant in "Star Trek Discovery" season 2.

Captain Christopher Pike commandeered the USS Enterprise in the years 2254 to 2262. Actors Jeffrey Hunter and Sean Kenney played the character on television, while Bruce Greenwood portrayed him in the 2009 "Star Trek" film.

Nimoy, on the hand, made Spock, the human/Vulcan hybrid, an iconic and unforgettable "Star Trek" character. Lead "Star Trek Discovery" character Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is his adopted sister, which fans only learned while the series went into development on CBS All Access in 2017.

"Star Trek Discovery" season 1 remains streaming on CBS All Access and Netflix. Season 2 has been set for a 2019 premiere.

'Krypton' Air Date, Plot News: 7-to-8-Year Plan Mapped Out Ahead of Debut

The Syfy series will delve on the fall and rise of Superman’s family, the House of El, two generations before his birth.

The history of Superman's family is finally getting a TV treatment via "Krypton" and its producers apparently have a 7-to-8 year plan for the show.

"Krypton" will debut on Syfy on Wednesday, March 21. Showrunner Cameron Welsh confirmed that they have mapped out at least seven to eight seasons of the series long before the cable network announced its debut.

Producers David Goyer and Geoff Johns are confident that fans of the Superman's lore will patronize the show. Not a lot of people know Superman's family history, hence "Krypton" will spark curiosity.

"This is an untold story and time travel is involved," Goyer said. "History could be changed and what happens in this story can be very different from the backstory people know."

"Krypton" will open with time traveler Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) warning Seg-El (Cameron Cuff), Superman’s grandfather, that he has to redeem the ostracized House of El. He'll also have to make a big decision: stop Krypton's destruction and save his home planet, or let events take its course to usher his grandson's fate as a future savior.

The show takes place years before Superman or Kal-El's birth, with a young Seg-El struggling to find his place in the Krypton's social system. The series is also expected to play around with the original timeline in the DC Universe that comic book readers might know. Other DC characters, such as Green Lantern and Doomsday, might also appear on the show in future episodes.

Cuffe revealed in a panel that he's greatly aware of the responsibility of playing a role so closely associated to Superman. Producers told him what's expected of him not only as an actor but also as an ambassador.

"It's a cultural icon but also an international icon," Goyer said. “It’s important to take that into consideration...even the smallest decision is something you think about carefully,” he added.

A "24" reunion is happening in "Designated Survivor" when it returns on ABC after the holidays. Kiefer Sutherland, who plays President Tom Kirkman, will be reunited with a former TV flame in Kim Raver. Will romance spark between them?

Raver, whose casting on "Designated Survivor" was announced in November, is no stranger to playing Sutherland's love interest. The two actors worked together for several years as on-again-off-again lovers in the popular series "24" on FOX as Audrey Raines and Jack Bauer.

The actress will debut as an Elon Musk-inspired character, Andrea Frost, on "Designated Survivor" season 2, in the episode airing Feb. 28. Her inclusion in the show comes just as Natascha McElhone, who played the First Lady Alex Kirkman, decided to exit the series. Writers wrote her character's death in the last episode that aired on Dec. 13.

Showrunner Keith Eisner confirmed that Raver's Frost will strike a friendship with Sutherland's President Kirkman. But the widowed president won't likely entertain thoughts of romance just yet.

"We don’t have an interest in throwing this president into bed with someone else, immediately," Eisner told TV Line. "We don’t feel that’s real, and Kiefer doesn’t either. Kiefer feels like [Alex] is his life companion who has been taken from him, and he’s not going to just start running around with other people.”

Eisner previously told TV Guide that President Kirkman will have to deal with becoming a widow, a single parent and the leader of the free world all at the same time before he finds new love again. His new challenges will bear both personal and professional effects that will become the story arc for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, the ABC series significantly rose in the ratings with delayed viewings. The show ranked at number three in total viewership and number five in its demographic (ages 18-49) following "The Good Doctor" and "This Is Us" after 10 weeks.

“Designated Survivor” airs Wednesday at 10:00 p.m. EST on ABC. New episodes for season 2 will kick off on Feb. 28.

'Les Miserables' Event Series on BBC Drops The Weinstein Company

A six-part miniseries adaptation of "Les Miserables" is heading to the small screen. Its production originally involved BBC Studios, Lookout Point and The Weinstein Company (TWC) but the latter company was recently dropped from the project following Harvey Weinstein's sexual harassment scandal.

"House of Cards" writer Andrew Davies wrote BBC's adaptation of "Les Miserables."

Deadline confirmed that TWC will no longer be producing nor distributing "Les Miserables" for U.S. television. Instead, BBC Worldwide will take over the markets outside of the U.K. but TWC's departure won't affect the show's production.

Weinstein was heavily involved in developing "Les Miserables" for television in 2016. He said the upcoming miniseries will be a "modern and yet respectful" take on Victor Hugo's celebrated classic novel. Weinstein also said that the TV version will be "completely different" from the popular stage musical.

"House of Cards" scribe Andrew Davies is attached to the project. He previously worked on BBC's adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic "War & Peace," which aired in 2016.

He confirmed that this version of “Les Miserables” will veer off from the stage play. “Most of us are familiar with the musical version which only offers a fragmentary outline of its story,” Davies said.

Various stage and big-screen adaptation of “Les Miserables,” including the 2012 movie that starred Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway, focused on the story of a convict named Jean Valjean. He has been trying to evade an arrest by a ruthless investigator, Javert, for years. Valjean, however, comes across a struggling factory worker, Fantine and her daughter Cosette. Javert arrests Fantine, leaving Valjean to take care of Cosette and his life forever changes.

Davies also revealed his excitement over the casting of Jean Valjean and Javert in an interview with Radio Times. BBC, however, hasn't made any announcements on who will star in the TV special. “Les Miserables” will likely air in late 2018.

LOS ANGELES, CA October 26, 2017 - Evan Peters, Kate Mara, James Van Der Beek and Emmy Award(R)-winner Tatiana Maslany have joined the cast of Ryan Murphy and FX Network's POSE, which begins shooting in November in New York City.

Peters (American Horror Story, the X-Men franchise) and Mara (American Horror Story, House of Cards) play New Jersey couple Stan and Patty, who get sucked into the glamour and intrigue of New York City in the 1980s. Van Der Beek (Varsity Blues, Dawson's Creek, What Would Diplo Do?) plays Peters's financial kingpin boss Matt. Maslany (Orphan Black, Stronger) plays a modern dance teacher who takes a special interest in the talent of Damon (the previously announced Ryan Jamaal Swain).

Acclaimed choreographer Ryan Heffington (Sia's "Chandelier" video, The OA) will choreograph Maslany's and Swain's dance sequences.
POSE is co-created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals. Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall and Sherry Marsh serve as additional executive producers of the FX series.

Peters, Mara, Van Der Beek and Maslany round out a cast that includes Tony Award(R) winner Billy Porter and the largest number of transgender actors in television history to have series regular roles. The series examines several aspects of New York City life in the 1980s, including the ballroom scene, and the art and financial boom of the later part of the decade.

Evan Peters is currently starring in the seventh season of FX's Emmy-nominated series American Horror Story: Cult. Created and produced by Ryan Murphy, the show has featured Peters in all of the previous six seasons. He will next star in Bryan Buckley's film PIRATES OF SOMALIA, alongside Al Pacino and Barkhad Abdi. Next year, Peters will reprise his role as 'Quicksilver' in the next installation of 20th Century Fox's X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX. On top of my head, I immediately listed down Friends, Frasier, Friday Night Lights, The Sopranos, The Office US and UK, and then ended up with 21 days 11 hours 30 minutes for these six shows alone.

And then I stopped listing down the shows, knowing all too well my number is going to be higher than 21 days. I probably don't need the computer to tell me I've been wasting time watching TV for at least half my lifetime. So, that's 20+ years and counting...

RIP, Television Without Pity

I was a frequent visitor of Television Without Pity (TWoP) back in 2004 to 2008. I have signed up for an account and joined in the discussion of TV episodes a few times, before I settled to lurker status and just visited the forum to read.

I was too afraid to post anything, really. I feared the admins and mods (like a few others, c'mon admit it!). They were almost draconian in their rules enforcement; their system was legendary. However, this worked for the site so well, I guess, because back then, if you would like to find sensible and quality TV discussion, TWoP was where it's at.

TWoP: Where I learned to love TV even more.

TWoP-ers had a lot of hardcore television fans who were not just fanatics. The site attracted geeky snarks who spent their time breaking down every storyline, character, backstory, behind the scenes, and what-have-you's of an episode or a series. To someone who watches TV casually, TWoP-ers' viewing habits would be some kind of annoyance. Some of the posters there even behave as though they are better than the showrunners and the writers of TV. (Sometimes, they do have the best ideas, though!)

It was in this forum where I learned to appreciate the process of watching a show on a different level. The people in this community fed my TV addiction so much, I wholeheartedly agree that It's Hard To Imagine The Internet Without Television Without Pity.

Well, the website is closing down.

When NBCU bought it sometime in 2007, there were big changes that made TWoP a slightly different place. I still go there once in a while to feel the pulse of TV fans about certain shows or episodes. (In fact, the last time I was there was just the other week. I wanted to find out what other viewers thought of The 100 and if they liked it like I did.) But since it became a "corporate site" and no longer a "fan site", it wasn't the same anymore.

Still, it's hard to process that it will soon shut down.

After May 31st, the archives of TWoP will no longer be available to the public, which is a pity (pity!) because that site was a treasure trove of resources for anyone who loves television.

Goodbye, TWoP.

I lost countless hours sifting through your threads and learning a whole lot more about a TV show than I ever could anywhere else. Those were great times!

You will be missed.

Now that Josh Charles is free to work on another TV show (because, if you didn't know --- he friggin' died on The Good Wife last night!), could Parenthood at least have him visit an old friend?

They played anchors Casey McCall (Krause) and Dan Rydell (Charles).

Things are not making sense right now.

Well, okay they are. They make good sense. Especially, since you could rationalize that what has happened this week (Season 5 Episode 15) is all in a day's work on television.

But right now, I'm in still in shock.

And I'm angry and bitter.

It's taking so much from me to try and not tweet Josh Charles, whom I've loved since Sports Night, to tell him --- HOW DARE HE DO THIS TO FANS OF THE SHOW! (It was a career move, you guys!)

5 Reasons Why I'm Excited for GOTHAM

You know that pre-Batman series that's in the works on Fox next season? Gotham? I've been meaning to write something about this. Since the series was announced as "in development" I already grew excited for it. What makes me so keen on this series is because it has so much potential to become the next big thing.

Gotham's main story is on James Gordon as a young detective, way before becoming the one Commissioner who would work alongside a certain caped-crusader. The series will explore his beginnings, as well as the beginning of his friendship with Batman.

Ben McKenzie (Southland, The OC) was tapped to play young Commissioner Gordon and today, photos of him in action have been released online.

He's Reason #1 for why I'm practically rooting for this show.

I liked Ben McKenzie in Southland. I wouldn't have any idea who could play the Commissioner better than him, but I think picking him was a good choice. He seems to be a committed actor.

Reason #2 for why I think Gotham has so much potential to be a hit is this guy: Donal Logue, who is going to be Gordon's mentor. People earlier thought he would be playing the Commissioner.

I've loved Logue's work on Terriers, and I find him so underrated. To be involved in a series that's going to have millions tuning in means he's finally going to get the recognition he deserves.

Reason #3 is Bruno Heller, the show's creator.

Heller is the man behind The Mentalist, which --- up until last season at least --- is one of the most clever shows on network TV. Maybe that's why The Mentalist hasn't been doing so well lately. It's because Heller's been busy developing Gotham.

Reason #4 is Jada Pinket Smith.

She's playing the role of a gangster boss in this show. Can you already imagine her? She's going to be so badass! And I cannot wait to see this!

Reason # 5 is David Mazouz, the young kid who will be playing Bruce Wayne.

Mazouz last show on TV was Touch, where he had no speaking lines (or at least when I was watching it, I didn't hear him say anything at all), as his character was odd.

I'm sure that role was challenging for him, but he's going to play Batman now, so this must be more exciting.

Gotham has so much going for it and its producers say this show should be treated differently as the franchise, even as classic Batman villains are expected to be in the story.

The series is set to premiere during the upcoming 2014 - 2015 Season, which starts this September.

A long time ago, we used to be friends...and then I got closure!

What Veronica said at the end of the movie? Struck a chord with me, I love it!

"Dad always said this town could wreck a person. It's what happens when you play a rigged game. I convinced myself winning meant getting out. But in what world do you get to leave the ring and declare victory? This is where I belong. In the fight. It's who I am. I've rolled around in the mud for so long... wash me clean and I don't recognize myself. So, how about I just accept the mud? And the tendency I have to find myself rolling in it? My name is Veronica, and I'm an addict."

Only a few of notes:

- Dick has not changed nor aged in 10 years. I think he's going to be that way forever. Disturbing.
- I have missed Wallace and Mac! Unexpectedly missed them so!
- I loved the cameos, including that "creepy guy" who danced in front of Veronica.
- Samsung product placement!
- Nitpick: I didn't particularly like Weevil falling back, not after he told Veronica what he's been up to. But I guess the quote above also applies to him.

Overall, one happy shipper here! That just had to happen. Of course!

Stirred by PORTLANDIA's Theme Song

I get a kick out of listening to this theme song each time I watch an episode of Portlandia.

I don't know why I love it so much. But it stirs up something in me. Whenever I hear it, I don't know if I wanna cry, or slow dance, or fall asleep. I can't describe if the song makes me happy or sad, but it makes me feel something.

I had a similar thing with House's theme song (Teardrop from Massive Attack).

There are opening themes to TV shows where I hit the fast forward button because they're not interesting enough and I just feel that it delays my viewing process. Most recently, I've skipped True Detective's coz I didn't like the song, no matter how interesting the visuals are.

But for Portlandia (and House), I always let it play out. Sometimes I even go back to listen to it a second time before I watch the episode.

TRUE DETECTIVE Season 1 Finale Thoughts

I hesitate when I get asked if True Detective is a good show to watch.

I'm finding it hard to explain the appeal of the series and often have great difficulty telling someone to, "Go and watch, sure! It's so gooooood!" ... because "good" is subjective.

Good can be an episode of Castle, or Person of Interest, or The Good Wife, or Breaking Bad, or Scandal, or Parenthood, or Episodes, or Portlandia. See the degrees of differences?

It would be hard for me to lump True Detective in a category of greatness.

Because it's just... different.

Setting aside the acting and the cinematography of the show (coz these two elements on True Detective are some of its strongest), I would not be able to qualify its pluses without sounding like I'm over-selling the story.

The essence of every show is in the story --- how it started, how it's played out, and most importantly, how it ended. For many viewers, the ending is crucial. It must top everything else. It should have the show go out with one big hurrah. Only, True Detective's ending, at least for the first season, is not what you'd expect from a show that started building up the plot with each episode. In fact, too many people were not happy about its conclusion. (Read: Is True Detective Overrated?; The Disappointing Finale of True Detective; True Detective Finale: This is it?)

Most people have mistaken this series for a "whodunit"; for getting suckered into figuring out the clues and secrets, and then figuring out the bad guy(s). I was one of those people. I followed theory after theory thrown on the internet, in the hopes of trying to discover clues to plot twists, in as much as I couldn't really understand where most of these theories lead up to. This habit of reading up on a show's many "secrets" is something I've developed since Lost, by the way. (Damn you, Lostpedia!!!) But while watching the last episode of True Detective playing out the other day, I finally got the sense that this was all so.....freaking simple.

To anyone planning on binging the first season of the show, bear this in mind:

The real story is not in the plot.

The real story is in the two lead characters.

To understand their development as characters is to get the essence of the show. To see their relationship --- with each other, with other people and with themselves --- go from one point to the next, is to experience the show's deepness.

Forget all the secrets. Forget hunting down meanings and clues. Look at Rust and Marty, and watch their transformation.

That's where True Detective is different from all the other good shows out there.

[GRIMM] Aswang, TikTik & Filipinos on AmericanTV

I have more reasons to love Grimm for featuring a very Filipino-centric episode this week (Season 3 Episode 14 - "Mommy Dearest") when the show explored the legend of a mythical creature known locally as the Aswang. More specifically, the episode featured the TikTik, an evil creature that preys on pregnant women and the fetus.

The story of the TikTik was told to me when I was 6 years old, and about to become a big sister.

I do remember that there were some nights when I would watch out for any "ticking" sound coming from our ceiling, and then made sure Mama's belly was covered with a pillow.

An attack never happened, of course. Nor do I know of any other family ever becoming victims of a Tiktik or Aswang because the story is an urban legend; an old wives' tale. But living in the province, on a big lot surrounded by many trees (incidentally, home to many aswang as legends go)...at that age, I was so sold on the idea that a Tiktik could be lurking. And that if it ever came for my mom and my baby sibling? This was exactly how I imagined it would go down:

Grimm got this one right!!! (Well, okay, minus the track suit haha!)

But I'm not going to have any nightmares, nor relive fears from my childhood after watching this episode. In fact, I found myself enjoying while watching it because....it's soooo Filipino!

The episode featured a lot of Filipino actors, like Tess Paras and Michael Golamco, who spoke Tagalog.

By the way --- Tess, as I've come to learn, has been on several other American TV shows like The Good Wife and White Collar.

There were references to many things Pinoy. Manila was even in one scene. (How did they do that??? File video? Should I tweet and ask the Grimm Writers about that?)

So, thank you Grimm for doing this!!! It felt like a shout-out, or a tribute to your Filipino fans. It might be overzealous to claim "Pinoy pride" over this...it's about an Aswang FFS. And I'd have to be objective and say this wasn't one of your best episodes, yeah? But it is one that's already close to my heart. ♥

[Scandal] Papa Pope is a scary motherfucker

Whenever this man starts delivering his lines on Scandal, I forget to breathe for air until he is done.

When Eli Pope goes off (and he's had several scenes like this, yeah?), I start getting confused about whether I should gasp for air, cower down in shame, call my parents and apologize for something, or just sit there and watch him until I'm so stunned, I turn blue in the face.

I know I'm not alone. You're probably also getting your fill from watching scenes with him unfold. Scandal is by no means great TV for me. But it's scenes like this that makes it so addicting to watch. The writers really know how to hook us, no?

From this week's episode... (Okay, the following is really much better heard than read, but since I can't splice the video into a smaller clip, this transcript should do.)

I don't know about you, but I think they picked the right guy in Ben Feldman (Mad Men, Drop Dead Diva). I already think they look good together! This, after saying on my Facebook yesterday that Ted and Mother on HIMYM are a perfect match, ha! (It must be Milioti! She is so likeable, her charm is infectious!)

A To Z, from Warner Bros Television, Rashida Jones and Will McCormack’s Le Train Train and writer Ben Queen, is a whimsical romantic comedy set in the world of an online dating company that details the “A to Z’s” of a relationship — from meeting to break-up. The ensemble navigates the complicated world of modern dating and poses the question: Is there such a thing as destiny? - via Deadline.

Ben Feldman will play Andrew, who is described as a "smart and sarcastic guy's guy" who actually believes in romance and finding "the one" (I can already see Feldman in the role!), while Cristin Milioti's character, Zelda, is the realist in the relationship (perfect!).

They've also added British actress Leonora Crichlow, playing the role of Zelda's roommate. But I wish they had gotten Lucy Punch (Ben and Kate) instead. I think Milioti and her will hit it off better. (But what do I know, I just watch the shows?!)

Among the comedies already taking shape this pilot season, I couldn't be more excited to watch A to Z.
