To all subscribers, followers, and visitors of this blog: we are moving!

It has been quiet here lately. Posting to my blog, website, Daily Paintworks and two Facebook pages left me scatterbrained, and the blog as well as the website suffered.

To combat this 'internet fatigue', I have moved my blog, website and newsletter to a new site, where they are integrated in one place:

As this blog is a record of sorts of my last five years of paintings, I will not delete it, but this will be my last post here.

I don't usually post reference photos, but I will this time, just to give you an idea of how you can interpret a subject differently. My photo, taken in Torun, Poland, was enough to spark interest for a painting, but it was lacking in atmosphere. After contemplating the subject, I decided to imagine how it would look in winter, and used a limited palette and value range to suggest the atmosphere of a cloudy winter day.

I feel that this approach has two advantages. The first advantage is that it encourages imagination and memory. You are not limited to the time of year, time of day and weather conditions of your subject (whether from life or in a photo) but you can interpret it how you want, how you imagine it. The second advantage is that you can do this in a color harmony of your choosing, which I feel is almost always better than trying to match the colors that are there in the subject. They are often dissonant or incoherent. Your job as an artist is to make sense of them, which means limiting and harmonizing - but in a thoughtful way, not according to a formula. You have to develop a sense for this. The only way to do this is by practising and finding out what works for you.

I will be glad to hear others' opinions about this. You don't have to be an artist to share your opinion; I am quite used to hearing non-artists observations, and welcome them always!

If you ever get the chance to visit the region of Cappadoci a in Turkey, I would highly recommend it. There is no landscape like it anywhere. Rock formations known as fairy chimneys are like something from a fairy tale indeed, but there are also plenty of remnants of human civilization, such as cave churches and underground cities.

When I visited Cappadocia five years ago, I took hundreds of photographs, and some of those have served as starting points for paintings. This painting of rocks and ruins does not feature the typical fairy chimneys, but instead a grouping of abandoned buildings in a place that seems now forgotten - the kind of subject that always appeals to me.

Materials: Azo yellow, quinacridone gold, quinacridone rust, quinacridone red, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, and sepia on Arches 140 lb rough.

Looking from ul. Podmurna into ul. Ciasna in Torun, Poland. Podmurna means 'at the wall', referring to the old city wall which is off to the left, not visible in the painting. Ciasna means 'narrow street' (alley), an appropriate name indeed.

I visited the beautiful city of Torun in Poland recently. It's one of the few cities in continental Europe that was not destroyed in World War II, and thus has buildings dating back to medieval times that are original, not reconstructions. The scene of this painting, however, is probably more recent. I liked the profusion of tv antennas sticking up from all the roofs, the chimneys, and the various construction elements of a building being rebuilt or restored. Clouds in the sky and smoke from the chimneys gave a kind of 19th century industrial feel to it, or at least how I would imagine that to be. It spoke to me, and seemed worth painting.

Materials: Quinacridone gold, quinacridone rust, quinacridone red, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, cobalt teal, Indian red, sepia; titanium white gouache; Arches 140 lb hot press.
