I groaned when I opened my eyes but went forward with using it anyway. This method never turns out well for me so I have no idea why I keep using it. The walnut and brass credenza was the saving grace. Once I placed that piece, I softened a bit towards the pattern on the floor. Then I remembered that I had a set of dice that complemented the credenza...
I have four unfinished scenes because I didn't have the energy to work on them. Can I blame it on working parent syndrome? I'm going to anyway! Chuckles. Typically on the weekend, I'll push miniatures around for ten to fifteen minutes, take some photos and share. Unfortunately, every time I got an opportunity to push tiny furniture around this weekend, I would go lay on the bed or the couch. What a lazy lima bean, ey? I actually woke up briefly on Monday at 5:00AM and smiled because I didn't have to get up for work. All that said, I think you get the quick scene above. I'll try to be less lazy next weekend.

Something tells me that I may get some inquiries about the art in this scene. I'm uncertain of the artist(s). I want to credit appropriately for this image so if anyone has any information, please share...

UPDATE---I'm getting quite a lot of emails asking about the model, so if you know his identity, please help there too...

UPDATE 2---Wow. I guess I don't get out much because several several folks claim the model above to be a man by the name of Victor Ross (?). Who would have thought that this gentleman would have such an avid following?---even in Brazil, Australia and the UK? Smiles. However, still no ID on the photographer. Maybe Mr. Ross will tell me. Shrug. I'll dig into some research later this evening...

I thought changing the striped wood floors to striped carpet floors would be a nice touch for the first post of the new year since many are trying to change their stripes/spots to meet resolution demands. Anyone make a 2012 resolution? I've made some changes but they are all with this blog site. A small nip and tuck to keep from looking like my 2007 self. Nothing grand. Speaking of grand...

Behold the amazingly delicious walnut shelving unit that Pepper made for our swap late last year. The composite pieces can be completely removed or custom arranged. It's beautiful. I love it. It's going in the will, man. Chuckles! This piece was the starting point for this mini scene. The sliding doors inspired the striped flooring selection and then it was on from there.

Can you believe that the wooden "Lo" letters are actually some of the brinca dada blocks? If you visit this blog on the regular, you know that I often use building blocks for my miniature setups. The brinca dada blocks are made of teak and quite interesting. I spent a few minutes playing around with them to see how I might be able to use them for future scenes. There's a tear drop shape that is my absolute favorite piece. To me, it's an ottoman or a coffee table. Actually, there's a lot of seating, table pieces and sculptural elements that can be created from this nifty bag of blocks. Below are the blocks and some of my quick arrangements. I'm sure the rest of you can come up with better configurations.
And a Happy New Year to everyone in the modern miniatures community and beyond. It's been a pretty good year. I'm always amazed at the number of people who dig on this hobby--whether they consider themselves interested in dollhouses or not. I think that number has increased a bit thanks to the ongoing "I'm a Giant" dollhouse challenge and the multitude of miniature blogs that show this hobby/interest isn't always fuddy-duddy or smelling like moth balls.

I do hope the New Year brings more interest in the hobby. I also would like to see:

a modern farmhouse dollhouse

some modern offerings from traditional miniature companies

some more modern dollhouses and miniature items from old school toy manufacturers. (Seriously...Hello?? If you make it well, we will buy it.)

more modern artisans entering the marketplace. Speaking of new artisans...

The walnut credenza with the stainless steel door in the images above was created by Logan Hendrickson of One Forty Three. I can't remember if I learned about him from Mini Dork, Call Small or someone else. Either way, big thanks to the messenger. I love this network, man! Anyway, Logan is new to the miniatures world and I'm uncertain if he will stay but I hope he does because his work is very good. If you get the opportunity, I highly recommend collecting one or more of his creations. I paired his micro credenza with a few Paris Renfroe furniture pieces (dining table, bench and stools.) These 1:12 masculine beauties communicate very well together.

Okay, can you believe that I actually made that chandelier? Yup, the non-crafty Mini Modern blogger made an unimpressive light fixture from Crate and Barrel ornaments, TAP Plastics scrap pieces, cardboard, painter's tape and putty. Sure, it's no Modfire replica but baby steps are necessary due to my lack of skills. Chuckles.

What do you all hope the New Year brings?

Well, I'm wishing you all the absolute best in life.
See ya next year...

The Goods: Upholstered dining chairs are Maileg; natural edge dining table is PRD; natural edge bench is PRD; wood stools are PRD; credenza is One Forty Three; Merry Christmas art is Mary Eld; vintage newspaper art is Tim Holtz; wall unit is AG Minis; all accessories are Crate and Barrel, TAP Plastics, Silver Acorn, Container Store, CB2, K & Company, AG Minis, Mighty World, Re-Ment, and common hobby store finds.

I loaded up the fire basket with wood and set it "ablaze"...inside the house. After a smack to the forehead, I quickly relocated the piece to an appropriate outdoor space and designed a new miniature scene. The error made me realize that I seriously could use some miniature ethanol gel canisters...Anyway---isn't this mini replica a beauty? Yes it is. Dare I say that Pepper is kind of badass when crafting miniatures. The quality of this piece (like all of her work) is phenomenal. It is sturdy and lightweight with a great paint finish. Even the folks at ModFire are impressed with this miniature version of their fire pit design.

And Pepper has posted a tutorial on how to make this fire pit in miniature. She's saving the rest of us from making dunce caps...

The Goods: Modfire replica by Pepper; outdoor seating is Sirch with Peter Tucker pillows; "Woolly Pockets" are toHOLD; side table is MegaHouse; all acccessories are Kate Aspen, Playmobil, brinca dada, Houseworks, ReMent, Lemax, and common hobby store finds.

Granted, I have been a deer in headlights these past couple of days because of a very nasty cold that just wants to hang on. I lost my voice and am at a whisper for the day = unenthusiastic "Hooray." My toxicity (...eating seeds as a pastime activity...) got me shunned from the East Bay Mini Meet Up. Kidding. The lovely chapter of Bay Area mini modern enthusiasts took pity on me and rescheduled for this weekend where I'll be less of a threat to their immune systems.

There was one upside to being home sick last week. I got my package of swap items from Pepper!!! Some of you may know the tragic story of how Pepper's first attempt to send me goods was thwarted by a thief. It was my first stolen mail incident ever. It has changed everything about how I now receive my mail. Thanks, thievin' bastards! I digress... Anyway, opening the package from Pepper was like having an early Christmas. I lack the vocabulary to accurately describe the "awesomeness" of each piece. Pepper's work is phenomenal and artisan quality. I sat in my kitchen, carefully removing each piece and saying "wow" and "oh my goodness" over and over again. Each piece (that I'll showcase over the next few months) has beautiful woods and great designs with working doors and drawers. I was stunned--not because I didn't think she had "the magics", but because she sent me such meticulously made items and doesn't know me outside this drivel I call a blog. The thought got me very sentimental and misty and all of those softhearted things. Sure, I've built a firm reputation on being cold and hardened to emotions...but after reading the heartfelt note that accompanied the package, I was all waterworks. I want to make it clear that technically I did not cry over dollhouse furniture. In my defense, I was being attacked by a virus and I'm pretty sure science has proven that cold viruses can affect the sentimental nodes of the brain to induce tears at alarming rates...pretty sure--especially about there being such things as sentimental nodes. Whatever... I'm still cool.

I know you're wondering if this William Neville is connected in any way with the Neville House produced by CB2. Based on similarities in the design and materials used, I think it is highly likely. Is this the next mini house that will debut at CB2? Shrug. I sent a few questions to the sender but it's very quiet on the other end. So for now we will simply enjoy.
I used the horse ornament for this quick toddler room above. You'll see a few other Adler ornaments pop up from time to time in future scenes. This find was kind of refreshing since this year's crop of Christmas ornaments definitely leave something to be desired. I know other modern miniaturists are feeling the disappointment too. Ahh well, maybe there's something of Jonathan's that you can use...

The Goods: Horse is Jonathan Adler; toddler bed is Re-Ment; dresser is MiniModernistas; all accessories are Hape, Re-Ment, Kate Aspen, DCWV, Bozart Toys, Munnyworld, Lundby and common finds from hobby and craft stores.

True Dat. Edward House is the third production run of the Emerson House but to avoid some confusion, brinca dada gave this dollhouse a new name. What's new about this beautiful and fun structure besides the name? Well, the manufacturer for starters. Brinca dada says to expect a higher level of quality like that currently seen with the Dylan House and the soon-to-be-released Bennett House. There are a few tweaks with this latest version of Tim Boyle's design. Those " tweaks" include the color scheme as seen in the renderings above and the fact that solar panels and fireplaces are no longer a part of the design.

Well, he's still a pretty house even with his makeover. I like the new color palette with the walnut wood grain, the new brick and the addition of more white interior walls to light up the place. I'm very curious to see how it looks in person...
Yes, what you see above is her handmade 1:12 ModFire made out of aluminum sheet. I'm awed at how quickly she put this piece together. Sure, we want to hate her because we're jealous of her skills. I say "we" but I think we all know I mean "me". Chuckles. Everyone knows that I think she's damn fabulous. I admit that I tried my hand at making one of these modern fire sculptures. I folded paper for an hour...and ended up with four dunce caps that apparently I should wear.

Pepper is going to send me this finished little fire sculpture. She rocks and rolls like that. Yes, I'm rosy on the cheekbones. I'm already thinking about how I want to use it in a mini scene. Seriously---how sweet and cool is she? Hmm...I think she might be an angel...yeah, an angel put on Earth to help craft-challenged modern miniature enthusiasts...
It makes my heart heat up with a vicious pitter patter. It's a ModFire and I want it in 1:12. I've got an inquiry in to the manufacturer but rarely do such companies entertain my smaller desires. I keep studying the design of this fire sculpture because I know there has got to be something in 1:1 that I can use to replicate it. I thought if I could just find a large enough icing piping tool, I could recreate it for the miniature modern world. However, I'm not finding a big enough icing tool---which is funny considering that I'm building for something small. True, I probably should simply go browsing the aisles of the nearest home improvement store for something to repurpose, but I'm gonna cheat..., er, I mean, "use my resources" and reach out to the community of modern miniature enthusiasts.

I thought it would make a cool kid's room furniture piece to store toys and all the other stuff that children like to collect. I scooped this train car up and a few others that I'll use in future mini scenes. I wish there were something like this train gondola for a 1:1 kid's room. It would be awesome to have a toy storage piece that looked like this. You could use it in several rooms and pass it down several generations...Okay, the above ain't 1:1 but I think you get the idea.

I believe this is the first time that I have used one of the Sketch Chair minis. I followed Call Small's advice on carefully removing the laser cut pieces from the wood sheet. Everything was all good as I meticulously put one chair after the other together. And then tragedy struck as I was building the very last chair. I applied a bit too much pressure when slotting it together and it exploded into a splintered confection. Damn. Anyway, I love the little chairs...Perhaps that statement is a given.
True, that "one thing" was actually three things but the bonus was this ugly fireplace and an even fuglier coat stand. The coat stand is long gone to charity but I kept the fireplace. The intention was to paint it a bright color like fuchsia, yellow or turquoise, but you can see that I never got around to it. So, here it is in all its ugly glory to give this scene the feel of an old home in which the owner is not so old-fashioned.

I'm currently on the hunt for some traditional dollhouse or older period style furniture to paint with bold modern colors or turn into...wait for it..."swans". I think it will be fun to experiment more with scenes that blend reborn traditional pieces in a modern setting. Since I am severely craft challenged, it should be interesting to see what disasters I create.
I think these Igloo chairs would look excellent in an outdoor setting too--especially if you had a landscaped mid-century structure = awesome. I'm thinking that these chairs might take on another interesting look if you were to wrap them in rope or thread--give them some texture. Speaking of texture...

The wood flooring in this scene is scrapbook paper. I'm actually surprised at how well it photographs and am planning to buy more. The teal wallpaper actually has a map printed on it but you can't see it so well in these images. I think I will use this room again but switch out the teal walls for something else...What do you think of the windmill sculpture? Sure, it's meant to be attached to the exterior of a miniature structure but I like to switch it up and experiment, man. The use of it here has put me on the hunt for a traditional windmill to paint red and use as sculpture in another scene. We'll see where it goes...
text-align: left;">I went to the Good Sam Showcase in San Jose this past Saturday. Although I overslept (thanks Sons of Anarchy!) and arrived much later than I had planned, I was still lucky enough to meet up with Mini Dork and Mini2b. I purchased some items from Wright Guide, Sir Thomas Thumb, Peter Tucker and Paris Renfroe--who was new to the lineup this year. So very nice to have another modern artisan there. I also got a chance to meet Erik Goddard who had some modern and Japanese structures on display. I hope next year will bring Doris of MiniModernistas since she's officially a "Bay Area homegirl" now. Chuckles!

The Saturday show was thick with a herd of collectors. I have to note that the dealers were much more pleasant this year. The attendees were definitely anxious so I got my foot stepped on twice, a random punch to the gut and an elbow to the ribs. There was a stampede during the announcement of silent auction winners. And I think there was a gang there. I could only identify members if they had a purse-carrying man following them around... In short, it was fun!

Let's see...so the CB2 Reed chairs are working pretty good in the 1:12 scene above. I used a much larger table to feature them but they blend, ey? I'm working on another scene with the white Igloo chairs and that's coming along. The table here is actually a Tudor/Gothic style table. I was attracted to it because it is massive, looks cool as a kitchen island and speaks to that farmhouse issue I've been having lately.
Every modern mini collector knows that there's at least one usable item from the multitude of Christmas ornaments available during this time. I have to admit that I was disappointed with Hallmark this year. There's a miniature Craftsman house that you can use as a dollhouse within your dollhouse, but not much else from that retailer appeals to me. What happened? Shrug.

I thought all hope was lost until I found these cool miniature ornament chairs from CB2. These babies are only $3.95 each, man. You can get the red Reed chair and/or the white Igloo chair here. The scale is a little larger than I prefer--the Reed is 2"Wx2.5"Dx3.75"H and the Igloo is 2.5"Wx2.5"Dx3"H, but I'll be scooping up a few and seeing what the possibilities are for my 1:12 endeavors. If things don't go well, they'll at least look nice on my desk, some shelves and the tree. Did I mention that they also made a Neville House Snow Globe?

Anybody finding other cool Christmas ornaments to repurpose? Made of wood, stone, metal and non-toxic and food-safe materials, these structures and furniture pieces are 1:6 scale for Barbie and other fashion dolls. I have a feeling the structures might work well for 1:12 too...
UPDATE 10/03/11:
Awesome news! Miniio will make 1:12 scale versions of their furniture items sans the pendant lamps upon request. These smaller items can be shipped to the U.S. and Australia. Contact the lovely folks at Miniio via miniio@miniio.com to order!
Ha! I started working on another scene in the middle of this one and completely lost my interest for this room. However, I am fond--very fond of this sink and bathtub component that Paris Renfroe made custom for me. The design is based on one featured in Dwell Magazine (Sept. 2009) by Cecilia Tham and Yoel Karaso of Habitan Architects. I think it is ingenious the way the faucet swivels to function for either the sink or tub. This piece is one of my prized possessions and there is even a matching kitchenette. It's the kind of miniature that can sit on a shelf all by itself and look good.

The Goods: sink and tub component is PRD Miniatures; shower is Reutter Porcelain; toilet is brinca dada; All accessories are brinca dada, Toy Island, Reutter Porcelain, Re-Ment, Mini Dork, DCWV, Reac, Mattel, and common hobby store finds.

The bed is, of course, another quality beauty. You can also see that I'm really diggin' on the Far East scrapbook paper. It has been a nice inspiration. I usually sweep out a room after I photograph it, but I kept the previous set-up in this structure. Now, the Voila house almost looks like a real residence as opposed to the disaster area that I usually leave behind. Sure, it needs a bathroom and a kitchen...maybe I'll create those rooms before I lose interest...maybe.

The Goods: Bed is Peter Tucker; dressing table and full-length mirror are PRD; chair is Reac; side tables are Burberry; shelving is Re-Ment; all accessories are Fisher-Price (yeah, really!), DCWV, Re-Ment, Playmobil, AG Minis, Toy Island, Zuri, Plan Toys, ebay finds and common hobby store finds.

Ya gotta love holidays, man. I forced myself not to do any work over the break. However, I did work out a new mini setup as seen above. I figured that I should at least spend some time with my hobby, right? Smiles. And since I have several Peter Tucker pieces that I haven't used, it's definitely a good time to showcase one of those. You know, I just realized that I have had these PT pieces for almost a year now. I purchased them last year at the Good Sam Showcase in San Jose--which runs again next month. I've already posted how wonderful it was to meet Peter Tucker but I have to reiterate because it's not often that you meet your "heroes" and discover that they are indeed cool people. The sofa above is his work. It's a beauty with wonderful lines and precision cuts. It's light in your hands but very very sturdy. Sigh. Just look at it! Chuckles. Oh! Did I mention that his lovely wife made the cushions and pillows? I can't quite figure out what she stuffed the square pillows with (sand?) but they dimple and crease like 1:1 pillows.

So...what's going on here in the scene above? You know I don't know. I just run with it. It all started with the Tucker sofa and then I started pulling items from there--heavily inspired by some Far East papers which play nicely with the sofa style. I wish I had a sophisticated way of describing how I put scenes together but I don't. I'm sort of on autopilot most of the time.
I'm not sure if the image of this little cowboy is old stock or a new picture styled to capture that old-time feel. Either way, I wonder who this little dude is and if he is now an old dude or a dude that is still with us. I also wonder if he knows that American Greetings is making money off of his charming fake mustache or if he sees any of the "Benjamins" this image might be producing. Whatever the case may be, he is the inspiration behind this scene.

My attempt here is to capture the playfulness and cowboy style that the picture expresses. I sprinkled the scene with some tall grasses, animal prints, leathers, woods and playful furniture and accessories. I chose the dining chairs because they hint at being horses. I chose the sofa because it is straight-up humor. And the arc lamp shown here is a lovely exchange from Call Small = Tee hee!

The Goods: Sofa and recliner are Reac Japan; bookshelf is Lundby; credenza is Minimodernistas; rug, dining table, and kitchenette are PRD; dining chairs are Take a Seat by Raine (Willitts Design); All accesories are American Greetings, Breyer, JUN Planning, Battat, Dwell, brinca dada, Lilu by Zuri, FLOR, Re-Ment, AG Minis, Bozart Toys, Lundby, Bodo Hennig, Reutter Porcelain, Concord Miniatures, and common finds from hobby stores.
