I still have to serve a few more days, but then I’m out.

More on where I’m going next in another post.

Job number 5 since 2008. I must say, though, I’m not so sorry to see this one go.

There were definitely perks to the highly structured environment (like highly structured time off), but it only took me a couple of weeks to be in full “I can’t wait for the weekend” mode constantly.

The biggest thing I will miss is the very, very nice people I work with. I have been hanging out with a few of them a lot lately. One is training for a 100 mile race, which has been good for my distance running, and another is a piano genius, for example.

But I’m ready for the next adventure. I hope to stick around with this one for a couple of years.

And as always, I’ll be busy with other projects. My baby shoe shows are all lined up, and I’m hard at work on content for a legal website that’s coming soon. And vending, of course, of course.

Thanks for sticking around through all of my… career experimentation.

Back to regular programming soon (including MM Bare Minimum Guide posts!).

<3

It’s been awhile since I have posted interesting links, so I think I’ll focus on two for today’s post. The theme is “keeping it simple.”

First, this article from my friend B. It has the F word in it, full disclosure. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially, this: “Everyone has an internetal eye. It always watching. It has been slowly constructed by society at large and by your friends and family, and it checks you for unacceptable behaviour. If you have had it around for long enough, you actually start to believe that the eye is you, and that you’re “being reasonable” or some other rationalization.” And this: “You don’t need to be an asshole, but the world does not need another conflict-avoidant, evasive person. No one wants another individual who steps in line with everyone else.” Amen. A-fricking-men.

Second, this article, old but good. You might even ask these questions of yourself when you get the offer, and answer truthfully!

I was reading my favorite publication today, and I came across an article about women’s access to sports in Saudi Arabia. More on that later. When I started browsing the web for more information, Title IX kept popping up.

Did you play sports in college?

I didn’t, and I only vaguely knew that Title IX deals with equality in programs that are federally funded. From what I read tonight, it looks like Title IX drastically increased the number of women in college sports to the levels of today from pretty meager levels before. The law was passed in 1972, which means, as I always marvel at, that the change came well within my own mother’s life. So recent.

I guess this is one more area that I took for granted in terms of equality. The article I came across today is located here, and it discusses Human Rights Watch’s report that concludes Saudi Arabia should be uninvited from the Olympics unless it can muster up one at least one female athlete for the Games. The report says that the discrimination against women in sports, from early physical education onward, is effectively a ban on women in professional sports.

It’s interesting that this is still going on, especially considering that Saudi women are making gains elsewhere, like in voting and business participation.

The worst part is, it seems like they are nowhere near a Title IX-like regulation or cultural change that would start improving this situation.

I guess there are much bigger problems to deal with for women there, but at the same time, something as simple as sports participation is a no-brainer that should already be taken care of. I don’t get it!
