IF THOU BUT SUFFER GOD TO GUIDE THEE

Word and Music: Georg Neumark

If thou but suffer God to guide thee,

and hope in God through all thy ways,

God will give strength, whate'er betide thee,

and bear thee through the evil days.

Who trusts in God's unchanging love

builds on the rock that naught can move.

Only be still, and wait God's leisure

in cheerful hope, with heart content

to take whate'er thy Maker's pleasure

and all-discerning love hath sent;

we know our inmost wants are known,

for we are called to be God's own.

Sing, pray, and keep God's ways unswerving;

so do thine own part faithfully,

and trust God's word; though undeserving,

thou yet shalt find it true for thee.

God never yet forsook at need

the soul that trusted God indeed.

IF GOD HIMSELF BE FOR ME

IF GOD HIMSELF BE FOR ME

Words: Paul Gerhardt

Music: Lowell Mason

If God Himself be for me, I may a host defy,

For when I pray, before me my foes confounded fly.

If Christ, the Head, befriend me, if God be my support,

The mischief they intend me shall quickly come to naught.

I build on this foundation, that Jesus and His blood

Alone are my salvation, the true eternal good;

Without Him, all that pleases is valueless on earth:

The gifts I owe to Jesus alone my love are worth.

His Holy Spirit dwelleth within my willing heart,

Tames it when it rebelleth, and soothes the keenest smart.

He crowns His work with blessing, and helpeth me to cry

“My Father!” without ceasing to Him Who reigns on high.

To mine His Spirit speaketh sweet words of soothing power,

How God to Him that seeketh for rest, hath rest in store;

How God Himself prepareth my heritage and lot,

And though my body weareth, my Heav’n shall fail me not.

THE GREAT PHYSICIAN

2015-09-19T01:26:00.002-07:00

19 September 2015

THE GREAT PHYSICIAN

Words: William Hunter

The great Physician now is near,

The sympathizing Jesus;

He speaks the drooping heart to cheer,

Oh! hear the voice of Jesus.

Refrain:

Sweetest note in seraph song,

Sweetest Name on mortal tongue;

Sweetest carol ever sung,

Jesus, blessed Jesus.

Your many sins are all forgiv’n,

Oh! hear the voice of Jesus;

Go on your way in peace to Heav’n,

And wear a crown with Jesus.

All glory to the dying Lamb!

I now believe in Jesus;

I love the blessed Savior’s Name,

I love the Name of Jesus.

The children, too, both great and small,

Who love the Name of Jesus,

May now accept the gracious call

To work and live for Jesus.

Come, brethren, help me sing His praise,

Oh, praise the Name of Jesus;

Oh, sisters, all your voices raise,

Oh, bless the Name of Jesus.

His Name dispels my guilt and fear,

No other name but Jesus;

Oh! how my soul delights to hear

The charming Name of Jesus.

And when to that bright world above,

We rise to see our Jesus,

We’ll sing around the throne of love

His Name, the Name of Jesus.

HEAR ME O GOD, NOR HIDE THY FACE

HEAR ME O GOD, NOR HIDE THY FACE

Words: Isaac Watts

Music: William Croft

Hear me, O God, nor hide Thy face;

But answer, lest I die;

Hast Thou not built a throne of grace

To hear when sinners cry?

My days are wasted like the smoke

Dissolving in the air;

My strength is dried, my heart is broke,

And sinking in despair.

My spirits flag like withering grass

Burnt with excessive heat;

In secret groans my minutes pass,

And I forget to eat.

As on some lonely building’s top

The sparrow tells her moan,

Far from the tents of joy and hope

I sit and grieve alone.

My soul is like a wilderness

Where beasts of midnight howl;

There the sad raven finds her place

And there the screaming owl.

Dark, dismal thoughts, and boding fears,

Dwell in my troubled breast;

While sharp reproaches wound my ears,

Nor give my spirit rest.

My cup is mingled with my woes,

And tears are my repast;

My daily bread, like ashes, grows

Unpleasant to my taste.

Sense can afford no real joy

To souls that feel Thy frown;

Lord, ’twas Thy hand advanced me high

Thy hand hath cast me down.

My looks like withered leaves appear;

And life’s declining light

Grows faint as evening shadows are

That vanish into night.

But Thou for ever art the same,

O my eternal God;

Ages to come shall know Thy name,

And spread Thy works abroad.

Thou wilt arise and show Thy face,

Nor will my Lord delay

Beyond th’appointed hour of grace,

That long-expected day.

He hears His saints, He knows their cry,

And by mysterious ways

Redeems the prisoners doomed to die,

And fills their tongues with praise.

THE SERVANT SONG

2015-09-12T05:04:00.002-07:00

12 September 2015

THE SERVANT SONG

Words: Richard Gillard

Brother, sister let me serve you.

Let me be as Christ to you.

Pray that I might have the grace

To let you be my servant, too.

We are pilgrims on a journey.

We are brothers on the road.

We are here to help each other

Walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you

In the night time of your fear.

I will hold my hand out to you;

Speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping.

When you laugh, I’ll laugh with you.

I will share your joy and sorrow

Till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven,

We shall find such harmony

Born of all we’ve known together

Of Christ’s love and agony.

Brother, sister let me serve you.

Let me be as Christ to you.

Pray that I might have the grace

To let you be my servant, too.

THE VALLEY OF DECISION

2015-09-11T03:40:00.002-07:00

11 September 2015

THE VALLEY OF DECISION

Words: Daniel S. Warner
Music: Barney E. Warren

There’s a peaceful valley of decision found,
Where unbroken fellowship and love abound;
Softly falls the glory of the evening light,
On its saints arrayed in white.

Refrain:
Oh, how sweet is my rest,
In the vale of the blest;
For the Lord is so near,
And His saints are so dear.

In this pure “decision,” all the holy dwell,
All who follow Jesus in His perfect will;
And they only glory in the Crucified,
And in all His truth abide.

In this lowly vale is everlasting rest,
For the wholly sanctified in heaven blest;
Oh, what sacred bonds of love and harmony,
In the valley of the free!

“Multitudes,” now gather in the vale of love,
And their praises echo on the hills above;
Lo! the Lord is coming, and the day is near;
For the evening sun is clear.

LET OTHERS SEE JESUS IN YOU

2015-09-10T04:19:00.002-07:00

10 September 2015

LET OTHERS SEE JESUS IN YOU

While passing thro' this world of sin,

and others your life shall view,

Be clean and pure without, within;

Let others see Jesus in you.

Refrain:

Let others see Jesus in you,

Let others see Jesus in you.

Keep telling the story, be faithful and true;

Let others see Jesus in you.

Your life's a book before their eyes,

They're reading it thro' and thro'

Say, does it point them to the skis,

Do others see Jesus in you?

Then live for Christ both day and night,

Be faithful, be brave and true,

and lead the lost to life and Christ.

Let others see Jesus in you.

SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER

09 September 2015

SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER

Words: William Walford
Music: William B. Bradbury

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
The joys I feel, the bliss I share,
Of those whose anxious spirits burn
With strong desires for thy return!
With such I hasten to the place
Where God my Savior shows His face,
And gladly take my station there,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
May I thy consolation share,
Till, from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height,
I view my home and take my flight:
This robe of flesh I’ll drop and rise
To seize the everlasting prize;
And shout, while passing through the air,
“Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!”

AWAKE, MY SOUL, STRETCH EVERY NERVE

08 September 2015

AWAKE, MY SOUL, STRETCH EVERY NERVE

Words: Philip Doddridge

Awake, my soul, stretch every nerve,

And press with vigor on;

A heavenly race demands thy zeal,

And an immortal crown.

'Tis God's all animating voice,

That calls thee from on high;

'Tis his own hand presents the prize

To thine aspiring eye.

A cloud of witnesses around,

Hold thee in full survey;

Forget the steps already trod,

And onward urge thy way.

Blessed Savior, introduced by thee,

Have we our race begun;

And crown'd with victory, at thy feet

We lay our laurels down.

MAKE ME A CHANNEL OF BLESSING

07 September 2015

MAKE ME A CHANNEL OF BLESSING

Lyrics and Music: Harper G. Smyth

Is your life a channel of blessing?

Is the love of God flowing through you?

Are you telling the lost of the Savior?

Are you ready His service to do?

Refrain:

Make me a channel of blessing today,

Make me a channel of blessing, I pray;

My life possessing, my service blessing,

Make me a channel of blessing today.

Is your life a channel of blessing?

Are you burdened for those that are lost?

Have you urged upon those who are straying,

The Savior Who died on the cross?

Is your life a channel of blessing?

Is it a daily telling for Him?

Have you spoken the Word of salvation

To those who are dying in sin?

We cannot be channels of blessing

If our lives are not free from known sin;

We will barriers be and a hindrance

To those we are trying to win.

IN LOVING-KINDNESS JESUS CAME

03 September 2015

IN LOVING-KINDNESS JESUS CAME

Lyrics and Music: Charles Hutchinson Gabriel

In loving-kindness Jesus came

My soul in mercy to reclaim,

And from the depths of sin and shame

Through grace He lifted me.

Refrain:

From sinking sand He lifted me,

With tender hand He lifted me,

From shades of night to plains of light,

Oh, praise His name, He lifted me!

He called me long before I heard,

Before my sinful heart was stirred,

But when I took Him at His word,

Forgiv’n, He lifted me.

His brow was pierced with many a thorn,

His hands by cruel nails were torn,

When from my guilt and grief, forlorn,

In love He lifted me.

Now on a higher plane I dwell,

And with my soul I know ’tis well;

Yet how or why, I cannot tell,

He should have lifted me.

REVEALING WORD, THY LIGHT PORTRAYS

02 September 2015

REVEALING WORD, THY LIGHT PORTRAYS

Words: M. Elmore Turner

Music: Dmitri Stephanovitch Bortniansky

Revealing Word, thy light portrays

The work of God through endless days;

We view His wisdom, power, and love,

That show the form of things above:

How splendid are the plans divine

Which through thy sacred pages shine!

Inspiring Word, thy truth imparts

Triumphant hope to human hearts;

Through thee, enslaved

men find release,

Earth’s burdened ones

find welcome peace:

What deeps the sons of God discern

When from thy sacred page they learn!

Enduring Word, thy strength abides

Like mountains firm, and ocean tides;

Man’s feeble works grow old with time,

But thou art ageless and sublime:

What lasting splendor crowns the page

Where-in God writes our heritage!

GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH

2015-09-01T01:24:00.002-07:00

01 September 2015

GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH

Words: William Williams

Music: John Hughes

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,

Pilgrim through this barren land.

I am weak, but Thou art mighty;

Hold me with Thy powerful hand.

Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven,

Feed me till I want no more;

Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain,

Whence the healing stream doth flow;

Let the fire and cloudy pillar

Lead me all my journey through.

Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,

Be Thou still my Strength and Shield;

Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

Lord, I trust Thy mighty power,

Wondrous are Thy works of old;

Thou deliver’st Thine from thralldom,

Who for naught themselves had sold:

Thou didst conquer, Thou didst conquer,

Sin, and Satan and the grave,

Sin, and Satan and the grave.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,

Bid my anxious fears subside;

Death of deaths, and hell’s destruction,

Land me safe on Canaan’s side.

Songs of praises, songs of praises,

I will ever give to Thee;

I will ever give to Thee.

Musing on my habitation,

Musing on my heav’nly home,

Fills my soul with holy longings:

Come, my Jesus, quickly come;

Vanity is all I see;

Lord, I long to be with Thee!

THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HATH MADE

THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HATH MADE

Words: Isaac Watts
Music: Thomas A. Arne

This is the day the Lord hath made;
He calls the hours His own;
Let Heav’n rejoice, let earth be glad,
And praise surround the throne.

Today He rose and left the dead,
And Satan’s empire fell;
Today the saints His triumphs spread,
And all His wonders tell.

Hosanna to th’anointed king,
To David’s holy Son;
Help us, O Lord; descend and bring
Salvation from Thy throne.

Blest be the Lord, who comes to men
With messages of grace;
Who comes in God His Father’s name,
To save our sinful race.

Hosanna in the highest strains
The Church on earth can raise;
The highest heav’ns, in which He reigns,
Shall give Him nobler praise.

PRAISE HIM! PRAISE HIM! JESUS, OUR BLESSED REDEEMER

Lyrics: Fanny Jane Crosby

Music: Chester G. Allen

Praise Him! praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!

Sing, ye saints! His wonderful love proclaim!

Hail Him! hail Him! mightiest angels in glory;

Strength and honor give to His holy name!

Like a shepherd, Jesus will feed His people,

In His arms He carries them all day long;

O ye saints that live in the light of His presence,

Praise Him! praise Him! ever in joyful song!

Praise Him! praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer,

For our sins He suffered and bled and died;

He, our Rock, our Hope of eternal salvation,

Hail Him! hail Him! Jesus, the Crucified;

Loving Savior, meekly enduring sorrow,

Crowned with thorns that cruelly pierced His brow;

Once for us rejected, despised, and forsaken,

Prince of Glory, ever triumphant now.

Praise Him! praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer,

Heavenly portals, loud with hosannahs ring!

Jesus, Savior, reigneth for ever and ever;

Crown Him! crown Him! Prophet and Priest and King!

Death is vanquished! Tell it with joy, ye faithful,

Where is now thy victory, boasting grave?

Jesus lives! No longer thy portals are cheerless;

Jesus lives, the mighty and strong to save.

GOD OF ALL COMFORT

25 August 2015

GOD OF ALL COMFORT

Words: Emily H. Miller

Music: Lucy J. R. Meyer

"God of all comfort," calm and fair

Stretch the broad plains beneath Thine eye;

And silent, through the hazy air,

Rise the blue hills to meet the sky.

The music of the Sabbath bells

Floats softly on the balmy air,

And the green earth in thousand tones

Lifts to Thy throne her grateful prayer.

"God of all comfort," deeper far

Than the glad voice of earth or sea,

Swells the full tide of thankful song

Our hearts would offer unto Thee.

Yet when we strive, our lips can frame

No words to speak Thy matchless love,

So far the honor of Thy name

Lies all our highest thoughts above.

Read Thou within our silent hearts,

The songs they vainly seek to raise,

And count their grateful tears for prayer,

Their trembling joy for tuneful praise.

THROUGH THE VALLEY AND THE SHADOW

Words: Fanny Crosby

I must walk thro’ the valley and the shadow,

But I’ll journey in a loving Saviour’s care;

He hath said He will never, never leave me,

With His staff He will comfort me there.

Refrain:

Thro’ the valley, thro’ the valley,

Thro’ the valley and the shadow I must go;

But the dark waves of Jordan will not harm me,

There is peace in the valley, I know.

Tho’ I walk thro’ the valley and the shadow,

Yet the glory of the dawning I shall see;

I shall join in the anthems over Jordan,

Where the loved ones are waiting for me.

I shall walk thro’ the valley and the shadow,

I shall follow where my Lord has gone before;

Thro’ the mists of the valley He will lead me,

Till I rest on the Evergreen Shore.

STILL WILL WE TRUST

23 August 2015

STILL WILL WE TRUST

Words: William H. Burleigh

Music: Joseph Barnby

Still will we trust, though earth seem dark and dreary,

And the heart faint beneath His chastening rod;

Though rough and steep our pathway, worn and weary,

Still will we trust in God!

Our eyes see dimly till by faith anointed,

And our blind choosing brings us grief and pain;

Through Him alone Who hath our way appointed,

We find our peace again.

Choose for us, God! Nor let our weak preferring

Cheat our poor souls of good Thou has designed;

Choose for us, God! Thy wisdom is unerring,

And we are fools and blind.

So from our sky the night shall furl her shadows,

And day pour gladness through his golden gates,

Our rough path lead to flower-enameled meadows,

Where joy our coming waits.

Let us press on, in patient self denial,

Accept the hardship, shrink not from the loss;

Our portion lies beyond the hour of trial,

Our crown beyond the cross.

NEVER GIVE UP

Lyrics: Fanny J. Crosby

Music: Ira A. Sankey

Never be sad or desponding,

If thou hast faith to believe.

Grace, for the duties before thee,

Ask of thy God and receive.

Refrain:

Never give up, never give up,

Never give up to thy sorrows,

Jesus will bid them depart.

Trust in the Lord, trust in the Lord,

Sing when your trials are greatest,

Trust in the Lord and take heart.

What if thy burdens oppress thee;

What though thy life may be drear;

Look on the side that is brightest,

Pray, and thy path will be clear.

Never be sad or desponding,

There is a morrow for thee;

Soon thou shalt dwell in its brightness,

There with the Lord thou shalt be.

Never be sad or desponding,

Lean on the arm of thy Lord;

Dwell in the depths of His mercy,

Thou shalt receive thy reward.

IT'S NOT AN EASY ROAD

20 August 2015

IT'S NOT AN EASY ROAD

Words: John W. Peterson

It's not an easy road we are trav'ling to Heaven,

For many are the thorns on the way;

It's not an easy road but the Savior is with us,

His presence gives us joy ev'ry day.

Refrain:

No, no, it's not an easy road,

No, no, it's not an easy road.

But Jesus walks with me and brightens my journey,

And lightens ev'ry heavy load.

It's not an easy road, there are trials and troubles,

And many are the dangers we meet;

But Jesus guards and keeps so that nothing can harm us,

And smooth the rugged path for our feet.

Tho' I am often footsore and weary from travel,

Tho' I am often bowed down with care;

A better day is coming when Home in the glory,

We'll rest in perfect peace over there.

19 August 2015

FAREWELL TO SIN

Words: Daniel S. Warner

Music: Barney E. Warren

I will part with thee, old master;

This is my firm resolve;

And I’ll boldly state my reason,

Why we must now dissolve.

Refrain:

The wages of sin is death,

The wages of sin is death, and woe,

And bitter remorse; I’ve found it so;

Bitter, bitter,

Bitter remorse and woe.

I have served thee long and faithful,

Confessed you were my lord;

All your way was dark and painful,

And what is my reward?

I have given time and talents,

My health and honor, too,

And exposed my soul to torments,

And what did you bestow?

You have flattered me, and promised

Much pleasure in your reign;

I have sowed and reaped your harvest,

Now what my wretched gain?

While beneath your doleful bondage,

How oft your father came,

Saying, “There is here no passage

Out from your dark domain.”

But the blood of my Redeemer

Has saved me through and through,

So, in Jesus’ name, forever

I bid all sin adieu.

MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE

18 August 2015

MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE

Words: Ray Palmer

Music: Lowell Mason

My faith looks up to Thee,

Thou Lamb of Calvary,

Saviour divine!

Now hear me while I pray;

Take all my guilt away;

O let me from this day

Be wholly Thine!

May Thy rich grace impart

Strength to my fainting heart,

My zeal inspire;

As Thou hast died for me,

O may my love to Thee

Pure, warm, and changeless be,

A living fire.

While life's dark maze I tread,

And griefs around me spread,

Be Thou my guide;

Bid darkness turn to day,

Wipe sorrow's tears away,

Nor let me ever stray

From Thee aside.

When ends life's transient dream,

When death's cold, sullen stream

Shall o'er me roll;

Blest Saviour, then, in love,

Fear and distrust remove;

O bear me safe above,

A ransomed soul.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

17 August 2015

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

Words: Johnson Oatman, Jr.

Music: Edwin O. Excell

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Refrain:

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

Count your blessings, see what God hath done!

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?

Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?

Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,

And you will keep singing as the days go by.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,

Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;

Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy

Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,

Do not be disheartened, God is over all;

Count your many blessings, angels will attend,

I AM THINE, O LORD

Words: Fanny Jane Crosby

Music: William H. Doane

I am Thine, O Lord- I have heard Thy voice,

And it told Thy love to me;

But I long to rise in the arms of faith

And be closer drawn to Thee.

Refrain:

Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,

To the cross where Thou hast died;

Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,

To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,

By the power of grace divine;

Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope

And my will be lost in Thine.

O the pure delight of a single hour

That before Thy throne I spend,

When I kneel in prayer and with Thee, my God,

I commune as friend with friend.

There are depths of love that I cannot know

'Til I cross the narrow sea;

There are heights of joy that I may not reach

'Til I rest in peace with Thee.
