I have not written for a few months because we were in a holding pattern. Basically, we continued with the same activities as before but still had to wait for details to come together in order to start classes in the Teach Us to Pray building in Huejotzingo. On Wednesday, we finally initiated school with three children. Although the oldest of the three is 11 years old, none of them have attended school, so Abraham and I are taking a few hours four days a week to teach reading, basic math, and beginning English. When one of the women from their family can be with them, the children can also use the showers, since there is very little water where they live. Our own kids have their homeschooling simultaneously. They enjoy going out to recess with the other kids at break time.

picture book, and then Lani and Abish begin their school We plan to have classes from 10 - 1:30 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. When the kids first arrive, everyone sits down for breakfast. We take turns washing the dishes afterward. Next Abraham, Abish, or I read aloud awhile Abraham or I teach reading to the others.

Recess follows. During recess the kids can take turns using the shower, if their adult family member chooses.

Math class is Abraham's, while I work with Abish and Lani on subjects that they do not study alone. The last class of the day is English, taught by me, with Lani and Abish helping.

Once internet is installed, we will also stay a few hours in the afternoons so that teens and adults have access to computers to finish their secondary or high school. Everyone will also be able to read books in the library, once it is organized.

Please pray with us that the children will consistently attend classes with us. Pray that they and their family members will be drawn to Christ as they see him working through us.

VBS 2023 - Judges

We structured this year´s VBS differently from previous years. Knowing we would have fewer volunteers, and that the helpers that would be joining us would be mostly teenaged, we chose to keep all the kids together for all the activities rather than dividing into two groups. In that way, volunteers could be available for whatever area most needed help.

The ages of participants ranged from 2 to 14. On our busiest day, we had twenty-four kids and teens attending.

We decided to start an hour earlier than we had before, beginning at 10. We also scheduled for a half-hour less than other years, planning to end at 12:30 each day. We learned many VBS´ ago that it´s best to start on Tuesday and go through Saturday, because Sundays are generally very occupied for us, preventing last-minute preparation.

As in past years, we provided transport for a number of the participants. This presents a challenge, since Abraham and I are the only drivers, and that means one of us is not present at the VBS for the time it takes to pick up and return the kids. Abraham chauffeured in the morning, so I began the VBS with review, Bible verse practice, and songs with the kids who arrived on their own or were on our route to Huejotzingo where we held the VBS.

Once all the kids were present, Abraham began games, an often riotous and crazy time. At the end of the game time, the kids lined up to wash hands and dig in to their light meal which Six, Abraham´s mother, had prepared the night before.

While the stragglers finished their food, I gathered the kids together to review and practice their Bible verses, and then Abraham taught the Bible story of the day. He told the story of Joshua on Tuesday, followed by Ehud, then Deborah, Gideon, and finally Samson on Saturday.

After the story, Abraham stayed with Six and a couple voluteers to wash and store dishes while I took the kids upstairs to work on their crafts and worksheets, with the assistance of three or four teen helpers. The difficulty with having young helpers was training them at the same time as we did the activities. Two of them were actually younger than the oldest VBS participant.

Although we had planned on having a closing time of review and songs after the craft and worksheet, we only did that once during the week. The other days, we had to race to finish the projects.

Some time soon after 12:30 the kids requiring transport stuffed into our car, and I drove them to their homes. Some of the young volunteers stayed to help clean up, while one had to hurry off to her factory job.

It would make a tremendous difference in future VBS´s to have someone besides Abraham and I who could drive, and also to have more volunteers in general. Some of the ones who assisted this year came only one or two days, and others worked every day, but needed quite a bit of guidance.

Still Waiting

The building in Huejotzingo is not ready yet. Minor complications prevent us from cleaning up, starting classes, and setting the library in order. My brother-in-law has been working on some faulty installment of the bathroom furniture, since the person who originally completed the bathrooms took shortcuts that left the sinks unfastened from the walls, among other problems.

Certainly the building should be cleaned and ready by VBS, Aug.1 - 5. During the last few weeks, I have searched for, created, and modified crafts and worksheets for the two age groups. Abraham and Six checked over them and wrote suggestions, and now all those activities are ready. We still need to request help from the church members for the VBS week. The teen who agreed to help me with the youngest kids is now working full time, but hopefully she can get the week off.

Yesterday we passed the day in Puebla on various errands. Abraham earlier had found an enormous bookstore near tae kwon do, so after the tkd class, we spent two hours choosing the final lot of books to buy with the donation we had earlier received.

Several kids take home a book a week from the library books currently waiting at our home. Abraham and I are in the second module of a government-sponsored program that will officially certify us and the library once we complete the classes.

Sunday church attendance varies greatly from week to week. Some weeks work takes priority over attendance for the families. One little girl who used to come every Sunday now has missed many weeks because her family lets her keep what she earns in their taco business. She is about 7 years old and has decided she would rather have money to spend, rather than come to service.

Ever since Easter Sunday, her family has been in a crisis of poor decisions. One of the teens who wanted to be baptized that Sunday chose not to because of difficulties in the family, and she has not returned to church since. Her older sister continued coming for a while, but then had to work. The next youngest girl has been attending regularly. The rest of the kids (there are 7 in total) come when they decide to. We have not been able to do the weekly Bible study with the family for about a month, either.

Please pray for VBS preparations, for sufficient help during the week of, and for the building in Huejotzingo to finally be finished in all its details. Pray also for the families that attend our church, in particular for the one I mentioned above.

More Progress

As we approach the year's half-way mark, we also near completion of the construction in Huejotzingo where we plan to have English, Tae kwon do, and ballet classes; school prep; VBS; and the Oikos library. Progress is slow, but the building now has electricity, running water, a rain-proof roof, and tile flooring in the area where classes and the library will be. What still remains to complete is tiling of the bathroom walls and floors to prevent water damage. Hopefully by next week, Valeria, the woman in charge of Oikos libraries, will be able to finish categorizing and stamping the books donated to the Huejotzingo library.

At home in San Mateo, thanks to a financial donation, I have purchased a number of new books. Several of the children who attend Sunday service borrow one book a week from the new collection.

We would be happy to receive more books in Spanish, preferably for youth or children. Getting the books to us from the States is a slow business, because of luggage restrictions. We have two unofficial couriers - the sons of the man we buy chicken from in the Saturday market. His sons live in Illinois but visit their father fairly frequently. They kindly agreed to carry four or five books for us each time they come.

Abraham's and my children have progressed through their homeschool year. With the Sonlight curriculum, they only a have a couple more weeks before they finish. They have a few more weeks with their Spanish-language schooling.

We are gearing up for this year's VBS with the theme of Judges. Our first day will be a discussion of Joshua's charge to the people to remain faithful to God. Day two we will teach about Ehud, followed by Deborah, then Gideon, and finally Samson. Marina, another Teach Us to Pray missionary, normally helps my mother-in-law Six with the oldest group of kids. However, this year Marina works full time and will not be able to join us. Please pray we have enough volunteers for the VBS to run smoothly.

For my group, which is the youngest bunch, I have requested the assistance of a teen girl who attends Sunday service. Last year another teen volunteer was wonderfully helpful, and hopefully she can join us again this year. The two teens who worked with Abraham in the VBS games are both employed this year, although their schedule varies, so they may be able to be with him again.

Please pray for the completion of the construction in Huejo and that the activities will glorify God. Pray for someone to live in the upper-story apartment. Pray also for VBS and for the various activities we are involved in.

Easter and the coming library

The construction site in Huejotzingo is almost ready for classes to begin. The final step is for us to install a floor in the area where there will be ballet and tae kwon do classes, and then we can organize and open the library and start with English, tutoring, and other classes.

our home church to clean up construction trash and clouds of fine dust from the library area and the donated books. After several grimy hours, the group had books neatly stacked and cleaned and the floor cleared. They lined up desks and chairs and removed coatings of dust from them as well.

Once all the work was finished, everyone ate lunch and the kids played wild games. Some of the teens gathered to teach each other English and Spanish phrases. Earlier during a break from cleaning, the Canadian team supplied the materials and taught the Huejotzingo kids and teens how to make slime, which everyone enjoyed.

Holy Week followed. We held services on Thursday and Friday afternoon, which most of the regular members attended. On Sunday we celebrated Jesus' resurrection throughout the service. After Abraham preached a brief message, it was time for baptisms. This year was

extra special for Abraham and I, because our two children decided to follow Jesus' example in being baptized. All the candidates for baptism had previously taken a class with Abraham in order to understand the purpose of baptism.

Once the church service was over, kids and teens crowded into the pool for some chilly fun, and then everyone lunched together with potluck food.

It was not necessarily a joyful time for everyone present, however. One of the families with people baptized was particularly struggling with family crisis. It is an on-going difficulty in that family.

Most of the families we work with have deep, unresolved problems. Humanly speaking, they are impossible issues. Please join us in praying for divine intervention in these situations. Pray also that the opening of the center in Huejotzingo will be for great blessing and that God would put on our hearts which activities we should have there. Pray he would send the people to attend and also help in those activities.

Year's beginning

We didn't have the Christmas celebration we would have wanted. Around Dec. 20, my mother-in-law and both kids began with coughs and fevers. The kids slept a lot and lay around on the couch downstairs, too tired and listless to do much of anything. My mother-in-law grew steadily worse, adding vomiting to the original symptoms.

By Christmas Eve, we thought it best to try getting intravenous rehydration, but since she is diabetic, our doctor recommended we get her blood sugar tested first. Abraham drove her to get the test, and that turned in to a three-day hospital stay, because her levels were close to 700. With antibiotics and insulin, her condition improved.

However, because of the kids' illness and her hospital admission, we canceled the Christmas Day church service. Abraham stayed the night of the 24-25th at the hospital, an unpleasant experience, since extra blankets are not permitted into the hospital, nor are there beds for care-takers. He returned home to sleep several hours while another family member stayed at the hospital. In the following days, various siblings took turns at the hospital.

My mother-in-law is seemingly fine now, although she can no longer rely on diet alone to control the diabetes. She needs blood sugar tests every morning and an injection of insulin. Doctors have not been very clear about how to proceed with treatment, and she firmly dislikes medication of any kind.

As we are now all healthy, Bible studies and church services are back to normal. I drive to three homes on Sunday mornings to pick up around 17 people, and Abraham returns
them to their homes after service, snack time, and play time.

This past Sunday it was evident that there had been fights in all three houses, since the kids and teens arrived out-of-sorts. Once the service ended, three of the teens had separate, tearful conversations with Abraham and another church member. I am thankful that they feel the confidence and security here to have such discussions.

Please continue to pray for us. As the building in Huejo is just about finished, we hope to begin classes in English, tutoring, and online schooling there. Abraham might offer tae kwon do and Lani's ballet teacher also may give basic classes. Those two classes require that we install a proper floor and mirrors.

Christmas season

This Christmas season we have enjoyed working with the church members to create different decorations for their homes each week after the service. Instead of dividing the children from the adults for a separate class during the sermon, we stay together for the whole service. Abraham's sermons have, naturally, been about Jesus' coming to earth.

On the first Sunday, we made yarn stars. The teens tired faster than the younger kids of winding the yarn around the cardboard base, but everyone finished, and their bright stars were ready for the next week's decoration.

Near our home, there is a family business buying and selling used pallets. Abraham and I loaded up on pallets, and then he and another young man worked together to make the example pallet Christmas tree

The kids and teens threw themselves into the activity on the second Sunday. One young lady in particular, hesitant at first to use the power saw, soon cut the measurements with confidence. Other children also took their turns cutting. Another two worked steadily, attaching the "branches" and reinforcing the "trunk." The youngest kids swarmed the finished trees to sand off splinters and rough patches.

On the third Sunday, two younger boys helped me cut branches off my over-grown rosemary bush. With the fragrant branches, wire hangers, wire, and lots of ribbon and pinecones, the church members created wreaths.

Next week, we will make a simple manger scene and then have lunch together with the church family. Because of various schedule constraints of family members, we will then return the kids to their homes (a feat which often involves piling 17 or more people in our 7-person car - good thing most of them are slender!), and then welcome relatives for a second Christmas celebration in the evening.

May you have a blessed Advent and Christmas. May this season be a time when you recognize that Jesus came to this earth for all the joyful, the hurting, the lost, and the lonely. Please pray for the Christmas preparations here and particularly the celebration on Sunday. The majority of those who join us can spend a few relaxed, loving, fun hours here, but then return to painful situations at home.

Two Years

Last Sunday we celebrated two years of having church at our home. We originally started as only family inside our home. After some months, a few neighbors joined us and we moved the service to my mother-in-law´s patio. A little over a year later, some children and teens that we have known for many years also began attending. I

pick them up on the morning, and Abraham returns them after church service, snacks, and some hours of play. Occasionally, vistors from the church Dios es Amor come for a Sunday service.

Speaking of those kids, we still go to one family´s house for mid-week Bible study. As usual, Abraham leads a study with the adults, and I teach the kids and teens. Abish and Lani participate in the classes, and then enjoy playing with the kids afterwards. We have studies with another family and also with Abraham´s sister and some other family members who live about 20 minutes from here.

We continuously hear of the difficulties in each family. One teen works in a jeans factory at night and is exposed to the bleaching chemicals used to distress the cloth. Worse than that, he is faced with the drug and alcohol use of the other employees, and although he is only 15, struggles with smoking and alcohol use himself. There are countless other stories.

This coming Sunday we have planned a festival of life. During this time when the days of the dead are celebrated, we wish to honor the God of life by showing the kids and adults the blessing that is life. We will have games, hot dogs, face painting, and story-telling. Members of the house church have volunteered to help in the event.

Please pray with us that each person who attends church here and/or studies with us will lead the life that God has for them. Pray that we can be a blessing to them and to their families. Pray also for the event on Sunday, that it will go smoothly and be wonderful fun. As the construction in Huejotzingo nears completion, pray for us to know who should live in the upstairs apartment, for the library that we have been loaned for the kids' use, and for the classes we will begin to have there.

The Fruit of the Spirit

During the third week of August, we held the annual week of VBS. The theme was the fruit of the Spirit, from Galatians 5. For the first time since 2019, we had it live. Although the Teach Us to Pray building in Huejotzingo still didn't have running water, any electricity, or all its doors, it was ready

We provided transport for two families, which meant packing eleven kids - sometimes more - into our car for the short trip. Throughout the week, 36 children attended, along with a total
of 12 volunteers. Three of the volunteers were teens who had participated as children.

We told stories of Bible characters who demonstrated love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Old Testament Joseph, Paul and Silas, Abigail, and Ruth represented the first seven fruits, and on the final day, Abraham told of how Jesus embodied all of them, while emphasizing Jesus' gentleness and self-control.

Each day we opened with review and some songs, and then the smaller kids went upstairs for their snack. The older group enjoyed games for that half-hour, and then the two groups changed places.

upstairs. Throughout the whole time, we worked with the kids to memorize Galatians 5:16, 22-25.

On Friday afternoon, all the parents were invited to attend the finale so that they could see what their children had learned during the week. Without us asking, four different families offered to buy treats to share with all the people who had participated in the VBS.

In our neighborhood, there are few children, so we felt it more prudent to continue VBS the final week of August by Whatsapp for those children. We recorded the videos, prepared packets of review pages and crafts, and filled bags with the necessary supplies for each activity. Twelve children and teens signed up. They have until September 4 to send photos of their completed pages.

Thank you for your prayers for us. Please pray that the lessons learned by the VBS participants would draw them closer to God. Pray also that the construction in Huejotzingo could be finished quickly and well, and that God would guide Abraham and I in how best to reach out to the community there and in our neighborhood.

Holy Week and Before

Midmarch, Leilani´s ballet class finally had their many-times-postponed recital. It was Lani´s first, and she was quite excited. The week before, the class had extra rehearsals, so she and I were out of the house most evenings. Saturday was the actual performance, and the rented hall soon filled with friends and relatives of the dancers. While Lani´s participation wasn´t perfect - nor did we expect it to be - we enjoyed the show and felt proud of her hard work and all she had learned. Her ballet class has been a blessing for me, too. Ever since Lani began attending, I stayed during the hour-long classes the three evenings a week. Not long ago, some other mothers also began to stay, and we have struck up friendships. Now we also converse outside of class and plan other activities together.

Speaking of long-posponed, in March we also finally had the Puebla Annual Ladies´ Retreat after canceling twice due to covid restrictions. Sixty-three ladies attended, about half of them first-timers. The theme was "Be Still," with Exodus 14:14 and Psalm 46:10 as the key verses. It was wonderful to meet old friends again and make new ones. One lady I met for the first time lives very close to Huejotzingo, and has children near Lani and Abish´s ages. We plan to get together soon.

During Holy Week, Abraham led services at our home church on Thursday evening, Friday afternoon, and Sunday morning. Some neighbors who had expressed intrest in joining us on Sundays came for the services. On Sunday we had extra guests, because five people chose to be baptized, and their family members, although not Christian, wanted to be with them on their special day. Once the service ended, we celebrated with a potluck meal, and the kids happily spent all afternoon in the pool.

Abish and Lani still do homeschool with both Abraham and I. When one studies in English with me, the other has classes in Spanish with Abraham. We alternate days. It can be difficult to complete the studies, what with the other activities we do. I continue to teach art at Puebla Christian School once a week, and our kids love going, but I may need to step down from that when this school year ends.

We are planning a día del niño fun fair at our home for May 1st. Quite a few adults and teens are signed up to help and to bring snacks and candy. We will also celebrate Abish´s birthday the week after that, and Mother´s Day follows immediately afterwards. Please pray those activies will be of blessing.

Daily doings

Marina, a Teach Us to Pray missionary who temporarily lives in the school room at the front of this property, takes health promotion classes. Part of what she has learned, we have been putting into daily practice for about a month. Agripina, an 88 year-old woman in a nearby pueblo suffers from an ulcerated varicose vein on her leg, an open wound she has had for 2 years.

Each day, I drive Marina and my mother-in-law, Six, the 20 minutes to Agripina's home. Once there, I become nurse's
assistant while Marina cleans the injury, applies, antibacterial creams, and re-bandages the leg. Six reads a chapter from the gospel of John, and then we return home. Healing of the ulcer is very slow, and there have been some reverses, but overall, Agripina's leg seems to be improving. Abraham took her to a specialist a week ago, and he will take her again shortly for evaluation.

Two of the Bible studies Abraham and I teach are usually on Friday. They are studies with families we have known for many years. Our own kids enjoy the chance to be with other children, and also learn from the Bible studies. In the first study, Abraham reads and explains a chapter of Mark with the great-grandmother of the children that I teach. At present, I am teaching stories from the Israelite kings. At the second study, we just began the book of Proverbs.

Because we home-school, Abraham and I have to fit our kids' classes in and around the differing hours each week. It can be quite the challenge to finish each week's assignments!

This week's schedule was a bit shaken up by a minor accident. On Saturday morning, a misstep at the top of the stairs ended with me skidding to the bottom. For the first day, I could barely bend my swollen knee, the only injury I suffered besides some bruises. In the next few days, both Abraham and Marina did gentle massages and bandaged the affected area. By Monday, my knee was much improved, but walking was still uncomfortable. When improvement plateaued, we decided I should go to a huesero (similar to a chiropractitioner) whose services friends and family members had already used. The treatment is painful while applied, but very effective, and already I feel more relief. We have a follow-up appointment on Wednesday.

Lani continues to enjoy her ballet classes. She will soon be dancing in her first recital. Lately, I have chatted with a few other mothers who also stay at the studio during class. This past week, I discovered one mother, with a daughter in ballet slightly younger than Lani, is our neighbor. We plan to set up play dates for the kids, something that both us mothers will also be glad of, since friends are somewhat scarce for us in this area.

Thank you for your prayers for us. Please pray for complete healing for Agripina and for her to know Jesus as her Savior. Pray that Abraham and I can manage our very fluid schedule well and that the Bible studies will be of blessing.

Three Kings

Happy New Year! Our Christmas decorations are now packed away, and home school resumed today. We had a couple weeks off school for Christmas and for my sister's week-long visit, but vacation is over.

On Jan. 6, Abraham and I visited our neighbors with Christmas and Three Kings gifts. To prepare, we drew up a simple design of a Christmas tree as a cross. While in Puebla, we had the design printed as window stickers. We bought pamphlets called Chicks with a message of God's salvation. On Jan. 5, Abraham and my mother-in-law Six visited the kids in Huejotzingo from the Sunday afternoon kids' club, Huellas de Cristo (footprints of Christ) to deliver candy bags, stickers, and Chicks, while I baked a double batch of cookies and bagged them.

In the morning of Jan. 6, Abraham and I made a short video about the magi and their purpose in traveling to visit Jesus. As always, we improvised to make the scenery and costume for our magi video, using hair clips, bathrobe, painted Burger King crown, a wig, and other unrelated materials. Once the video was ready on whatsapp, we gathered cookies, stickers, and Chicks and began knocking on neighbors' doors. At some homes, we had longer conversations, while other visits were very brief. Several neighbors agreed to receive the whatsapp video.

Last week Abraham and I went with the contractor of the new Teach Us to Pray building in Huejotzingo to see the final results. Before we can begin activities, the building still needs electricity, plumbing, windows, and security bars installed, but hopefully everything will be completed by the end of January or beginning of February. People have been particularly asking about English classes. We also have a friend with a library ministry who has offered to donate books and shelves for Huejotzingo.

Please pray with us that this new year will be a blessing. Pray that the church at our home will attract the people who need to hear of God's love for them and that the building in Huejotzingo could soon be ready for classes, the library, and Bible studies. We need a family living in the upper story of the building for security, as thievery is unfortunately common in the area.

Please pray also that we can have good relationships with our neighbors and for friendships for all of us, since this is an isolated place. Thank you for your support!

Joshua, God´s Warrior

At first, we planned to do VBS live this year. We had worked out how to transport children from Huejotzingo to our house, so that the VBS could be outdoors. However, just after we planned, the Delta wave of Corona virus arrived, and we decided that it would be imprudent to have a large group of children at our home during the week.

Back to the drawing board, we created the list of supplies we would need to give to the children who signed up for the VBS by whatsapp. We cannot assume the children have any of the craft supplies necessary for the activities. We also made worksheets and activity pages for each day, careful to plan for activies that the children could do without much supervision.

Prepared with 25 packets of activities for the older age group and 25 for the younger, as well as bags of pencils, scissors, glue and other supplies, we drove around our immediate neighborhood to sign up the local children - and some teens. Two days later, we printed out another 30 packets, since we had nearly run out in our neighborhood, and drove to Huejotzingo to sign up more kids. We also had to purchase more supplies. By the end of sign-ups, later on in the week, we had more than 100 children and teens enrolled. We have no way of keeping an exact count, because some people from out of state received the videos, and some who enrolled never sent back photos of their activities, so we do not entirely know who participated and saw the videos we sent out.

Doing the costumes and make-up for the videos is always an adventure in creativity. Using wigs, tape, headbands, hair clips, and face paint, we did our best to create realistic Biblical characters for each day´s message. Our theme was Joshua, God´s Warrior, and every day one person from Joshua´s life talked about his walk with God. Moses started out the week, sharing how God used Moses to teach Joshua and how the two of them learned to love the Israelites through God´s strength. Caleb shared his story on Tuesday, followed by Rahab, then a woman from Gibeon, and then Joshua himself shared his story on Saturday.

The week´s verses were John 15:12-16, and as each Bible character spoke about Joshua, they also spoke about God´s love and desire for relationship with us. Besides the monologue videos, Abraham and I also made videos explaining the day´s crafts and clarifying the Bible message.

We sent videos of songs and the youtube links as well, so that the children could learn them and sing along. Abraham kept busy all day, receiving messages from participants and responding to their questions.

Once the VBS week ended, we gave the participants another week to finish their packets and send photos of their pages. For those who sent evidence of their completion, we printed diplomas and gave prizes of notebooks and fashion dolls or a catching game with mitts. The children were excited to have their prizes and one family requested more videos
for the kids. We will send them whatsapp videos of Walk Thru the Bible OT.

Thank you for your financial support and your prayers. While doing VBS remotely is not as personal as doing it live, we believe God´s message is still spread. Please pray that those who watched the videos will understand and remember God´s word for them and that those who have not yet watched the videos would watch them. Pray also that we can continue to have outreach among our neighbors and the people of Huejotzingo.

Construction again

Three years ago, when we moved from Huejotzingo to San Miguel, where we now live, a friend moved into the house we had been renting. She, also a Teach Us to Pray missionary, helped in innumerable details with the classes we still held at the Huejotzingo house. However, slightly less than a year ago, she also moved to San Miguel. The owner of the Huejo house raised the rent to more than double, and then an Alcoholics Anonymous group moved into the area where we had taught classes and Bible studies.

Due to the pandemic, we had suspended the majority of the classes anyway. Still, the contacts we had made over the years live primarily in Huejotzingo, and although our house in San Miguel is only about 10 minutes away by car, hardly any of them have cars, so they cannot easily attend any classes we might have in San Miguel. Abraham and I began discussing with my dad about whether we could build a center on our property in Huejotzingo. Don Ezequiel, the same man who directed the building of our San Miguel home, agreed to put together a construction team, and soon the new center was begun.

Once again Abraham and I are reminded of all the details that go into planning a new building. Where to put the windows? What size? If we want it to be wheel-chair accessible, where does the entrance ramp go? How steep and wide will it be? How many light switches and where should the lights be? Also, Abraham and Don Ezequiel must constantly check prices of the necessary materials when more ordering is needed. Many prices have soared since our house building.

The Huejotzingo center will not be ready in time for this summer´s Vacation Bible School, but we probably have to do it via whatsapp again anyway, since there are reports of higher covid infection rates recently. The VBS theme is of the life of Joshua. We have five actors ready for their parts. Abraham will write their monologues, and we will record the videos to send out, as we did last year. We also have most of the craft materials to bag up and distribute to participants, and the prizes are ready for the end of the VBS week, which will be August 17-21.

On a more personal note, Leilani continues to love her ballet classes in Huejotzingo. She participated in her first recital last week. She does not suffer from stage fright and enjoyed the experience. Her teacher plans to prepare the girls for presentations every three months.

Both Abish and Lani have a few weeks left of their homeschool year with me. We are all taking a vacation from studies for the next two weeks while my sister is visiting us. These weeks will be more about playing and going out and about.

Please pray for us as the construction goes on. Pray for health and safety for Don Ezequiel and his team and for Abraham and I as we make all the decisions. Pray that the finished center will be a great blessing. Pray also that the VBS will be a wonderful outreach even if we cannot do it live and that we will be safe and well throughout the planning and running of the program - virtual VBS is somwhat easier but still requires significant work. Give thanks with us for Lani´s teacher and her class and her joyful dancing spirit and also for my sister´s visit.

During the pandemia

I can´t say that the covid-19 pandemia slowed down much of anything for us. Certainly we have fewer outside classes, but work at home and some home Bible studies have continued.

We have not yet resumed English classes, the young ladies´ classes, tutoring, or Sunday afternoon kids´ club. We do not know whether VBS will be virtual again this year, or whether we will be able to have live meetings.

We never suspended certain in-home Bible studies, due to the needs of the families we study with. Our church in Cuautlancingo has yet to open the services to live attendance. For some time, we watched the virtual services on facebook, but our internet is iffy at best. Last October, therefore, we began to hold our own church services at home with only our family and the neighbors who live on the same property.

Within a few months, however, we welcomed other neighbors and moved the services to my mother-in-law´s patio as a health precaution. The neighbors are young in the faith, and requested a weekly Bible study as well. Now Abraham teaches on Tuesday or Wednesday nights from the material Hasta Que Todos Lleguemos by Ken Hanna. Our neighbors would like to be baptized, so the classes are specifically focused on baptism.

In February, we began to look for ways to bless our community. Our first gifts to neighbors were homemade cookies and plants divided from our garden. The following month, we made key-holders from used packing pallets that we sanded and painted with verses. In May we made two neighborhood visits, first with chicharines (fried snacks) for the kids to celebrate Children´s Day, and then with candy bags for the moms on Mother´s Day.

School for Abish and Lani did not change when Mexican schools closed, because we homeschool anyway. However, Lani has had the wonderful opportunity to begin ballet classes in Huejotzingo. She mostly loves it.

Meanwhile, work on the house and garden continue. Ever since we moved in, the roof has leaked during rainy season. The best option for stopping leaks was to tile the roof area. That project is now almost complete. Once the rains properly start - hopefully this month - we will find out if the solution worked. Another urgent project is the cleaning and deepening of the well. The three families living on this property depend on the well for all our water, since there is no municipal water supply in this rural area. However, the well began to only give water for bursts of 20 minutes, with about 2 hours´ time to recuperate in between. The men who originally dug the well are currently working on the cleaning and deepening.

Please pray with us that the home church will be a blessing to us and our neighbors. Pray also for the gifts that we give to the community, that they will help us get to know our other neighbors. Pray that we can organize our time wisely.

Finished and Still Going

Yesterday and today, Abraham and I delivered most of the diplomas and prizes to those who completed their pages and watched all the videos during this past week.

The kids were, of course, excited to receive the dolls or soccer balls and notebooks.  They also were pleased to show the work they had done on the pages.

VBS 2020 has not ended, however.  Today, as we visited homes to give out the last prizes and diplomas, twelve new children signed up.  In addition, Six and Abraham will be going around tomorrow to our neighbors to see if any of them would like to participate, since the ones who already finished were from Huejotzingo where we used to live, and not San Miguel where we now live.  A few Huejotzingo children also experienced technical problems, so we will be going to their houses to show them the videos on Abraham´s phone.

Ongoing VBS

Doing VBS by whatsapp means that there is no definite end to the classes. Certainly, the children who started on Monday will finish their videos, craft, and work pages today. Abraham is sending out a review and some questions for those participants, and they will receive their prizes and diplomas tomorrow.

However, several children have enrolled throughout the week, and we plan to invite our immediate neighbors starting on Monday.  The advantage to doing everything virtually is 

that we don´t actually have to have met those who are participating.  Today, for example, Abraham and I passed some hours in San Martin buying the prizes we still didn´t have.  Because of the large number of soccer balls we purchased at once, the store owner asked us if we are coaches.  Abraham explained what the balls are for, and she asked if her grandson could have the classes.  He will be the youngest participant so far, at 2 years old.

Two families that are signed up did not have telephones.  Through mission funds, and with the help of my brother-in-law who knows where to find good used phones, we were able to provided cell phones for those families.

The week has been busy.  We have learned quite a bit about what goes on behind the scenes in video shoots, now that we have had to find creative solutions to varying problems.  We have been encouraged by the positive response of participants, and we are likely to include virtual VBS from now on, even as we pray to also be able to have live VBS in following years.

Whatsapp VBS day 2

While Abraham and I are not nearly as busy with this year´s VBS as in previous years, there are still several tasks to complete during the day. We started out with printing more work pages for the older group of kids, since we gave out all of the pages we had with us yesterday. Abish helpfully arranged the pages in order and stapeled all of them. With those ready, Abraham and I began the work of transforming Abraham into the elderly Biblical Abraham. That turned out to be more time-consuming than we had anticipated, since attaching the

beard and mustache involved a lot of creative thinking.  We ended up using a face mask, masking tape, three hair clips, and clear string to arrange everything.  With face paint, we aged him to somewhere around 100 years old. 

Filming concluded and sent out, we left home for Huejotzingo to both do grocery shopping for the week and give pages and supplies to children who signed up after we left yesterday.  We had purchased supplies for 40 children and ran out, so shopping also meant adding a few more supplies.  

While Abraham went one direction to buy groceries, I stopped at the Bodega Aurrera for the VBS supplies.  As I walked to the other part of town to meet Abraham, I ran into some of the Alamedas - one of the families we have known the longest in Huejotzingo.  We have only had minimal contact with them in the past few years, but this afternoon, I talked with them for awhile and offered the VBS packets to the two children.  They gladly accepted, but the difficulty is that they have no cell phone and therefore can´t access the whatsapp materials.  We will probably loan them my phone for a few hours tomorrow and Friday so they can catch up.

I arrived with Abraham, and we were going to return to the Alamedas to give the children their pages and supplies.  However, when Abraham turned to key in the ignition, the engine only clicked.  The battery had drained.  While I walked back to the Alamedas, Abraham looked for someone to jumpstart the car.  

It seems perhaps God decided to keep our car from starting.  The man who jumpstarted the car has two small children, and he welcomed Abraham´s offer of the VBS.  We had not met him or his children before, but now they will be joining others learning about the armor of God.

We know that there are more than 43 people signed up for the VBS, but we do not have an exact count.  We hope that those who are enrolled are sharing with others.

Virtual VBS Day 1

Day one of VBS, the Armor of God, is now fading into night. During the morning, Abraham and Rachel finished printing out the pages that they planned to hand out to children in Huejotzingo. Abraham also recorded the three songs from youtube onto whatsapp. With the pages ready and stapeled together and divided by age, Abraham put together his costume so he could appear as Paul, the first presenter. After experimenting with various styles, he found a convincing ensemble and it was time to make the videos for the day.

Rachel climbed out an upstairs window and stood on the overhang in order to film into the house, through the window bars, to make the video appear as if Abraham, as Paul, were in prison.  Once that video was finished, they made a welcome video, an opening prayer, and a video to explain the craft page for the week.

With everything ready, they set out to Huejotzingo to give children their VBS packets and supplies for the week.  When they set out, not many children were signed up, but they visited the houses of families who had participated in previous years, and many children joined the whatsapp list.  A little after four hours of dropping off supplies and enrolling new children, Abraham and Rachel returned home.  By then, many of the children had already completed their work page and sent in the photos of their answers.  A few other parents wrote to enroll their children, and those participants will receive their materials tomorrow.

While the count is fluid, what with people still signing up by whatsapp, there are so far eleven children younger than 6 years, and 24 older children signed up.

Continue to pray for the Lechuga family and for all the children - and their families - who are taking part in the VBS.  It is a very different VBS from previous years, but has the potential to reach even more people than the live VBS´ of other years. Virtual VBS

Covid-19 has dramatically changed how people all over the world interact. We are no exception here in Puebla. This year, we cannot do live vacation Bible school, so we are opting for VBS through whatsapp. We chose whatsapp since many children do not have ready access to the internet.

The theme is of the armor of God, found in Ephesians 6. As we have done in past years, we will be teaching the theme using monologues, written by Abraham, and based on Biblical characters. This time, we will have to make videos of the monologues and send them to participants. On Monday, Abraham and I will go to the house we used to live in in Huejotzingo to give printed copies of work pages to the children who have signed up. We also decided to buy basic supplies to provide to the children, since we cannot assume that they have at home what they need in order to do the crafts and work pages.

Also using whatsapp, we will send three songs for the kids, and hopefully their parents, to learn. Each page we give the participants will have the verses from Ephesians printed.

On Friday, Abraham and I will return to Huejotzingo to present the children with their diplomas and prizes for the week.

While doing a virtual VBS is new to us and not ideal, it does provide a way for us to spread the message farther. Children who do not live in Huejotzing will have the opportunity to participate using their telephones, and we pray that their parents and older siblings will overhear the classes and help with the pages we send home. Please join us in praying that this situation turns out for the very best - for more people to be reached through the virtual VBS. As always, pray for us as we work on the details and as the VBS is in session next week.

On Sunday, January 26, headlines worldwide announced the death of basketball legend, Kobe Bryant. He was a young man with a family. No one expected his sudden demise in a helicopter accident. Several other people died along with him, although their names were not famous.

There was another death that day, closer to us. It was anticipated by the family and friends of Eduardo, the man who died. He had been diagnosed with advanced pancreas cancer in June.

Three of his teen-aged children had been to many of our vbs´s. They also sometimes attended English class and math tutoring. When they abruptly stopped coming to classes, we didn´t think much of it, since their previous attendance was somewhat spotty. However, a few months after their disappearance, we drove passed a bus stop and saw the man and his wife exiting the bus. Once a tall, strong man, Eduardo was almost unrecognizable, having lost half his weight.

Abraham and I decided to visit the family to see how they were doing, although at the time, we didn´t know the cause of Eduardo´s change. When we arrived at their house, Rosario, Eduardo´s wife told us about his diagnosis and the subsequent hospital stays and ineffectual surgery. She told us that, less than three months after surgery, Eduardo returned to work as a long-haul truck driver. Because of his work, he was not home when we visited the second time, either.

Early in December, we finally found Eduardo at home. Abraham conversed with him at length about his life and inevitable death. Abraham clearly emphasized that none of us know the day of our death. Although Eduardo was the one with cancer, none of us is guaranteed another day´s life.

Eduardo was a fighter. He had crossed into the States and worked in Los Angeles for years. He trucked long distances through California, and then returned to Mexico where he married, had children, and continued trucking. He had no use for God, because he felt himself to be strong and capable on his own.

Our family left for a three-week visit with family in the States, promising to bring back the sunflower seeds from the 99 ₵ store that Eduardo remembered with fondness.

On January 26, we returned to Eduardo´s home with packages of sunflower seeds. Although Eduardo had been very thin when we last saw him, the change of a month was drastic. Now we found him in bed, with the appearance of a skeleton. Rosario helped him with the shivers from sudden low blood sugar by briskly rubbing his chest. As she rubbed, she filled us in on the month´s happenings.

After some time, Abraham offered to take over with the massage. As he rubbed Eduardo´s chest, Abraham asked him, "You are very strong. Do you want to keep on fighting?" First, Eduardo said yes, then changed his response to no. Abraham asked whether he wanted to ask for forgiveness from God. With complete lucidity, Eduardo replied that he did. He asked Abraham to help him pray, and in that moment, surrendered his life to God. After singing Amazing Grace in both English and Spanish (Rosario sang along in Spanish), Abraham and I left to go to kids´ club at Marina´s house.

As we prepared to sleep at about 11 pm, Abraham´s cell phone rang. Eduardo´s oldest son called to say Eduardo had ended his earthly fight. We visited the family twice the following day.

We will continue our visits and prayers for the family. Will you join us in praying for them?

Silent auction

There is a family connected to Puebla Christian School which has struggled with health problems for a few years. First, the mother - the current secretary at PCS - was diagnosed with lupus. Shortly after that, the youngest son of the four sons began a two-year battle with non-hodgkins lymphoma. While the family does have health insurance, it did not cover all the options they explored to cure Aaron. As a result, the family incurred significant debt with the banks and through personal loans. The PCS community put together Gofundme pages twice to help with medical costs, but even so, the debt grew. On November 5, 2018, Aaron´s cancer battle ended with him leaving for Heaven at the age of 15. A few months later, his father began the process of dental surgeries which he had postponed during Aaron´s treatments.

Now Abraham and I are organizing a silent auction online with the hope to diminish (or eliminate!) the family´s debt. We have sought donations from friends and also from businesses near the school. People at Dios es Amor church have contributed as well, and now there is a smorgasbord of goods and services available for auction. People have been very generous and helpful. The sale begins November 8 on the googledocs https://forms.gle/kgkbpWuAzCx9CifN7 and will last until 8 pm on November 16.

There will be an event in the evening at the school to end the auction. People from the community around the school, as well as from Dios es Amor, and from the school itself are invited to presentations given by many of the school´s class groups. Several ladies have offered to sell food at the event, with the money gathered to be donated to the family. The auction will be totally online, but there will be computers set up and students ready to help with bids at the school.

Please pray that all will go smoothly with the auction. Pray that each item or service sells well and that the debt can be significantly reduced. Above all, pray for the comfort of the family Esparza Espinosa as they move forward without Aaron. They know they will see him in Heaven, but naturally, their hearts are broken here on earth.

VBS 2019

Moses, humble liberator, VBS 2019 has ended. Vacation Bible School in Huejotzingo is always an intense time of hard work and constant activity. The work begins a few months before the actual VBS dates, with choosing the theme and then deciding who the principal characters will be who tell the daily stories. We add the verses, crafts, worksheets, and theme snacks, and Abraham writes the monologues for each day. Once the rough draft of the week is ready, we go back over the plans to see what needs to be changed.

The VBS week approaches, and we go on shopping sprees to buy the supplies - food, scissors, colored pencils, end-of-the-week gifts, and more. The house where we will be is cleaned and many items moved to storage to leave space for the expected group of children. We find volunteers to play the roles of Jocabed, Zipporah, Aaron, Miriam, and Moses. Dios es Amor church loans us costumes and game supplies. Monday is a flurry of final preparations as we print out Tuesday´s worksheets, make name tags and attach their strings, decide on last-minute changes to the snack, and write out the verses and song lyrics on posters.

When Abraham and I returned home from shopping and general preparation in Huejotzingo, we found out that Abish had been suffering from an intense headache all afternoon. Although he had been drippy with a cold, he had not actually felt bad until then. He slept on and off in the early evening, between doses of his homeopathic medicine, but by bedtime, his headache had not diminished and he had a fever. We looked for paracetamol in our house to help him, because he could not sleep for the pain, but we could not find any. Abraham stayed with Abish, cooling the fever with wet towels, and in the very early morning, Abish finally slept well, fever gone.

Not long after that, Lani left her bed and climbed into bed with me. At about 8, Abish bounced

into my room, waking Lani and I to cheerfully proclaim, "I feel fine! I can do VBS!"
However, over breakfast Lani began to wilt, complaining of a headache and refusing to eat. She gets headaches when she´s hungry, tired, or dehydrated, so her discomfort disappeared after we obliged her to finish breakfast.

Typical of most first VBS days, we were running late. We arrived hurriedly at the house where we used to live in Huejotzingo, and everyone got out to hang the shade tarp on the patio, put up string to hold the song posters, print out the registration papers, and set out the snack. I left the bustle of activity to drive ten minutes away to pick up two kids and their great-grandmother who would be helping with food prep and clean-up. Once I dropped them off, I drove the opposite direction to get six other kids. Chauffeuring is normally my dad´s job, but he was unable to visit this year due to medical issues.

On that first day, 20 children learned songs and verses and ate a snack and did crafts to reenforce the story told by Jocabed about how God takes care of his children. Day 2 saw a slight increase in attendance, as the children participated in activities related to Zipporah´s story of how God hears. Aaron arrived day 3 to tell 34 children about how God acts on behalf of his people.

When we returned home late afternoon on Thursday, day 3, we found out someone had tried to break into our property. They had cut the chainlink off the front gate, pulling it back half-way. We do not know if they didn´t enter because our dogs scared them away, or what else might have prevented further entrance. However, for the next two days, my brother-in-law, who had been the VBS photographer, stayed at home to discourage would-be thieves.

On Friday, Miriam was played by a young lady from church. She told how God saves, recounting the story of the Red Sea. Finally, Moses came on day 5, waiting to tell his story until the end of the day, when the parents came for the finale. We had decided to rearrange the day´s activities so that the parents could see how their children had been learning throughout the week. Seven parents attended the finale, including two new ones whose sons had joined mid-week.

Five days of Moses. Fewer than forty kids. Some volunteers working daily, and some just once. Some kids staying the whole week, while others attend one day. Is it worth it? We pray that the time spent with the kids will change their lives and touch the lives of their families. At least eight of the children who were with us most of the week have mothers who work as prostitutes. Those same children, and other children in the group, come from families where drug and alcohol abuse ruin lives.

Would you pray with us that the stories and activities would help the children and their families learn of God´s longing for a relationship with them and that patterns of destruction would be broken? Would you pray that the children will continue to attend on Sunday afternoons so that they can learn more?

After almost ten years of marriage, Abraham and I now own our first vehicle, bought with funds donated to our family. Abraham researched online and asked for advice from friends and chose the Toyota Avanza as our best option. The car has good gas mileage and seats seven. It is from 2017, and the previous owner fitted it with a deer guard (dog guard, around here!) and lightly tinted windows.

In its time with us, Rededi (Regalo De Dios) has already had adventures. Not long after we brought it home, we had several near misses with dogs running suddenly out into the street. People aren´t always careful crossing the street either, and lots of the drivers on the road probably shouldn´t be behind the wheel. The interior of the car was recently decorated with melted chocolate when a chocolate-covered balloon exploded as I took home one of the pre-teens I teach on Tuesday afternoons. There is also always plenty of mud or dust to decorate both inside and outside.

Although driving around Puebla is still difficult for me - I like being able to know where the lane lines are and they aren´t usually marked, nor are most speed bumps painted - the car has been helpful in many ways. Getting to and from the market on Saturdays is now much easier, as is traveling to Puebla Christian School to teach on Thursdays. Also, we have been able to take friends from Huejotzingo to church, cutting the travel time from 1 1/2 hours to only a half hour. For a few years now we have had a mid-week Bible study with a family with six children, and now we can pick them up from their home for Sunday kids' club as well. The oldest girl of that family can participate in the pre-teens' craft or dessert class on Tuesdays, because I can drive her (hence the exploded balloon mentioned earlier). Because of the car, we can now enroll Abish in swim classes, even though the pool is fairly far away.

Rededi is a blessing, and we know it isn't really ours. It belongs to God, and we intend to use it as he directs. Please pray that it will continues to serve well and that we stay free from accidents.
