Yellow pot stand

This is the matching pot stand to the one I sold a few weeks back. Aren’t they so very bright and cheery? The powder coating is a bit bubbled in places, but you don’t really notice the imperfections unless you’re looking for them. The perfect stand for a small verandah or front stoep.

There’s something so lovely about old jelly moulds! I’m not even a fan of jelly and I still love them! I particularly like the larger metal mould, probably because I haven’t seen one quite this style before – the pattern on the top of the mould makes it quite special. And the miniature moulds are also great – it’s unusual to find a full set in such great nick. I’m not sure how old the glass moulds are, but any moulds in glass are always a winner in my mind. A great collection for display or for use.

Italian serviette holder

How crazy is this serviette holder?! It’s Italian and I assume was made sometime during the 1980s, but don’t let that put you off! I know that people often hear the word ’80s and turn their backs, and fair enough I suppose, but a well chosen piece in the right context can make a bold statement. Plus I feel that every kitchen should have a serviette holder – they’re super practical and somehow seem way more civilised than paper towels. The perfect piece to add a bit of a punch to your kitchen table.

Retro African figurine

This is without a doubt the most risque object I’ve sold on Mint to date! I blushed a wee bit as I uploaded the photos, but she was just too cool to pass up. I love those crimson lips that show up so nicely against her matte black skin. I suppose it’s the blue loincloth that draws your attention to her pose, but it’s also one of the things that makes her stand out. I don’t know anything about her, but I’d guess that she’s from the late ’60s/early ’70s, and is likely American. She was in perfect nick when I got her, but it seems that the detergent has rubbed off a bit of the black paint – very sad, but easily fixable (nothing that a bit of black marker pen can’t sort out)! An interesting piece to say the least!

Enamel double boiler

Every house should have a double boiler, especially now that winter’s on its way! How else are you going to make hot chocolate for the kids (or yourself!), or some creamy oats for these chilly mornings? These pots have seen a fair bit of use in their time – the inside of the pots is quite worn, but compared to a lot of older cookware you see, their condition isn’t bad at all. There’s also a bit of wear to the handle, and a bit of the enamel has worn off the side of the one pot, but its’ the smaller pot that sits inside the larger pot so the wear isn’t noticeable. An essential piece of cookware in a classic South African style.

1960s Marwal bust

I have egg on my face this morning! When my brother was admiring my two Marwal busts the other day he said he thought the turbanned lady was in fact a man. I thought he was crazy, but while I was looking for information on this bust of a Polynesian girl I discovered a whole lot of sites that say ‘she’ is in fact a ‘he’! In my defence a lot of other people believe her to be a woman! The reason I’m now leaning towards male, is that I think that there was a polynesian family designed by Marwal in the 1960s and that this bust of a young girl is the daughter – I’ve seen photos of a wife and son to complete the set. It would seem that Marwal were responding to a Polynesian craze that swept across America in the 1950s. “The King & I” and a variety of other broadway musicals and movies served as catalysts for this new fad, and this young girl and her family were a response to popular demand at the time. There are some areas where the varnish has scratched off, but overall the bust is in very good condition. A great piece of American history that will look fantastic displayed on your mantle piece.

Broadhurst Kathie Winkle part-dinner service

These are the matching plates to the serving dishes I put up for sale the other day. I actually bought the entire dinner service, but it was a welll used and well-loved set in its time and there were very few pieces in good enough nick to sell on. I bought it in spite of its condition because I love the pattern – plus the couple I bought it from were so proud of it and had so many great memories of the times that they used it that I thought it would be nice to see at least some part of it continue its journey with another family! So for sale today are four bowls, side plates and plates – the plates aren’t dinner plate size, but they are larger than a standard side plate. There’s one side plate and one plate that have seen better days, but the remaining pieces are fairly clean. A handsome set that deserves a second chance!

Large Corning Ware roasting dish

I think that this is probably the largest piece of Corning Ware that I’ve ever bought. When I first spotted it I thought that it was a lasagne dish, but it’s called a ‘roaster’ which I suppose makes sense given it’s large proportions and the fact that it’s labelled ‘microwave safe’ – although I’m not sure how big your microwave would have to be to fit this dish in! The pattern is called Floral Bouquet and was in production between 1971 and 1975. It’s in very good condition given its age with only some minor scratches to the handles of the dish. I love the stylised nature of the pattern – the thin outlines contrasted with the blocks of colour. A great design by a well respected name in cookware.

Large Corning Ware roasting dish with matchbox

Chinese buddhist goddess

I realise that this porcelain figure isn’t really what you would term retro, but she really is so very special! I fell in love with her the moment I saw her, and I’m sure someone out there will feel the same way. I know very little of the various Buddhist deities, but I think that this might be a depiction of Quan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, who gave up Nirvana when she heard a cry of anguish from earth. The multiplicityof her arms represtents Quan Yin’s immense power and her ability to perform several acts at the same time. I’m amazed at how detailed this piece is, and even more amazed that it’s intact (including all 28 of her arms!). There’s a stamp on the base of the figure, but I can’t really decipher it which makes it hard to value. There aren’t many  figures similar to this one selling online, but the closest example Icould find is selling for a whopping $400! Whatever her true value, in my mind she’s priceless – an incredible piece in mint condition.

Retro kettle

After deciding not to buy anymore retro appliances I went out and bought this fantastic vintage kettle – really, who could say no to that great shape? I have a very similar kettle in my kitchen, and I’ve loved it from the moment I first saw it. Granted you have to remember to turn the kettle off at the wall, but this hardship is more than made up for by the great ’60s style of these kettles. A true classic in reasonably good nick.
