Google Mail (or Gmail) is really useful. It’s free. It’s powerful. It’s heavy (with features of course). It’s free from banner ads and ads within signature. I’m sharing top 10 Gmail features, tips & tricks which will enhance your Google Mail experience.

Gmail Features, Tips & Tricks You Probably Don’t Know

1. Your single Gmail account = Unlimited E-mail IDs

Let’s say my registered Gmail ID is maheshone@gmail.com.

Since Gmail doesn’t recognize dots as characters within usernames, you can add or remove the dots from a Gmail address without changing the actual destination address; they’ll all go to your inbox, and only yours. In short:

maheshone@gmail.com = m.a.h.e.s.h.o.n.e@gmai.com

maheshone@gmail.com = mahesh.one@gmail.com

maheshone@gmail.com = m.aheshone@gmai..com

As you can see all the above addresses belong to the same person. You can see this if you try to sign in with your username, but adding or removing a dot from it. You’ll still go to your account.

That’s not all.

maheshone@gmail.com = maheshone@googlemail.com

maheshone@gmail.com = mahesh.one@googlemail.com

Since googlemail.com is Google’s email domain for users in the United Kingdom and Germany, so if you register your username @gmail.com, it becomes unavailable in @googlemail.com as well.

Gmail Plus Addressing

Append a plus ("+") sign and any combination of words or numbers after your email address. For example, I can use the ID maheshone+twitter@gmail.com to Sign Up for Twitter and use maheshone+facebook@gmail.com to Sign Up for Facebook. So now you virtually have unlimited email IDs.

2. Catch the spammers using the “Plus Addressing”

Now, I can find out who is spamming me. You can really find out who is spamming you. Next time when you join a newsletter use youremail+newlettername@gmail.com. So that in case you’re receiving lot of spam to that ID you can create a filter to auto delete those mails.

3. Sign Out Remotely

With Gmail you can now track your recent sessions and can also sign out remotely. Click on the “Details” link present at the bottom right corner of your Gmail inbox.

4. Embed images instead of attaching them

Enable “Inserting images“ lab feature and it allows you to insert images directly into a message body. Now you can upload an image from your PC or insert images by URLs by clicking on the “Insert Image” icon located right next to emotion icon in the “Compose Mail” page. Even if you have not enabled this lab feature you can still copy paste images directly to your Gmail body.

5. Undo Send

Enable “Undo Send” lab and it gives you up to 30 seconds to undo the sent mail.

6. Grant access to your account

You can delegate access to your Gmail to another Google account holder. This person will be able to sign in to your account to read, delete and send mail on your behalf. They will not be able to change your account settings or your password.

7. Sender Time Zone

Enable “Sender Time Zone” lab and you’ll see green phone icons next to people who are probably awake and readily reachable (if it’s between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM in the sender’s local time zone) and red ones next to those who could be sleeping or out of the office.

8. Message Sneak Peek

Enable “Message Sneak Peek” lab and it allows you to preview messages to get a glimpse on what they contain and maybe take immediate action without actually opening them. After you turn it on, right-clicking on a line in your inbox and it shows a preview pane with the message in it.

9. Mark as Read Button

Tired of spending all that effort to click on the “More” actions menu every time you want to mark message(s) as read without reading them? Enable “Mark as Read Button” labs feature and that is just a button click away!

10. Canned Responses

If you’re lazy just like me then “Canned Responses” is just for you and me. E-mail for the truly lazy. Now save and then send your common messages using a button next to the compose form. Or else automate those process by utilizing Gmail filters.

Is your Gmail account compromised?

I’ve already discussed about how to secure your Gmail account from hacking. But it’s all about keeping your account safe by using a strong password, enabling two step verification and other method(s). But what if your Gmail account is hacked (or compromised)? The hacked would have already changed the password, security question & answer, mobile number associated with the account. So you can’t recover your Gmail using those primary account recovery methods.

But wait! Google allows you to recover your Google account using Knowledge Test process. All you need to do is answer few questions as thoroughly and accurately as possible; the strength of your answers will determine if they can return your account.

Your detailed answers will help them ensure that you’re the actual account holder and only you get access to your account.

What to do when your Gmail account is hacked?

Step 1: Go to Google Mail and click on “Can’t access your account?” link.

Step 2: Enter your Google Mail or Gmail ID.

Step 3: Complete the Captcha form.

Step 4: Click on “Verify your identity” link since the “Get a password reset link at my recovery email” and “Get a verification code on my phone” won’t work as hackers have already changed that.

Step 5: Verify your identity by answering multiple questions about your account.

Protect your Gmail account.

You can secure your Gmail account from hacking by following the article How To Secure Your Gmail Account From Hacking and then note down the following information somewhere (preferably in your personal diary) so that in case your Gmail account is hacked you can still recover your account using the following information.

1. Account Creation Date

To get your account creation date, go to “All Mail”, click on "Oldest" on the upper right, and get the date of the welcome mail from Google. If its deleted choose the date of the last mail in your “All Mail” to get an approximate date.

2. Verification Code (if you have it)

3. Email addresses of up to five frequently emailed contacts

To get the email address of your frequently emailed contacts go to “Contacts” and click “Most Contacted” choose five of your contacts from them.

4. Names of up to four labels

Did you receive an invitation to create your account? If so select “Yes” and enter the details if you can otherwise leave it blank.

That’s it! You’re done. Google will review your application and will contact you.

Warren Buffett Quotes On Investing

I was searching the entire web for some famous quotes said by the legendary investor Warren Buffett. I don’t know how many I’ve read. But I would like to share with you 79 of them which I find interesting and which do makes sense. If you are an investor then it’s a must read! And feel free to comment below if I’d missed something! Happy Investing!

‘Never invest in a business you cannot understand.’

‘Always invest for the long term.’

‘Buy a business, don’t rent stocks.’

‘Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’

‘I really like my life. I’ve arranged my life so that I can do what I want.’

‘We will only do with your money what we would do with our own.’

‘If you don’t feel comfortable owning something for 10 years, then don’t own it for 10 minutes.’

‘I am a better investor because I am a businessman and a better businessman because I am an investor.’

‘Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.’

‘The Stock Market is designed to transfer money from the Active to the Patient.’

‘Stop trying to predict the direction of the stock market, the economy, interest rates, or elections.’

‘I never attempt to make money on the stock market. I buy on the assumption that they could close the market the next day and not reopen it for ten years.’

‘I don’t look to jump over 7-foot bars: I look around for 1-foot bars that I can step over.’

‘For some reason, people take their cues from price action rather than from values. What doesn’t work is when you start doing things that you don’t understand or because they worked last week for somebody else. The dumbest reason in the world to buy a stock is because it’s going up.’

‘We don’t get paid for activity, just for being right. As to how long we will wait, we’ll wait indefinitely.’

‘As Buffet said in the speech, "He’s not looking at quarterly earnings projections, he’s not looking at next year’s earnings, he’s not thinking about what day of the week it is, he doesn’t care what investment research from any place says, he’s not interested in price momentum, volume or anything. He’s simply asking: What is the business worth?’

‘Buy companies with strong histories of profitability and with a dominant business franchise.’

‘Most people get interested in stocks when everyone else is. The time to get interested is when no one else is. You can’t buy what is popular and do well.’

‘When asked how he became so successful in investing, Buffett answered: ‘we read hundreds and hundreds of annual reports every year.’

‘When a management team with a reputation for brilliance joins a business with poor fundamental economics, it is the reputation of the business that remains intact.’

‘Only those who will be sellers of equities in the near future should be happy at seeing stocks rise. Prospective purchasers should much prefer sinking prices.’

‘Diversification is a protection against ignorance. It makes very little sense for those who know what they’re doing.’

‘Wide diversification is only required when investors do not understand what they are doing.’

‘You’re neither right nor wrong because other people agree with you. You’re right because your facts are right and your reasoning is right – that’s the only thing that makes you right. And if your facts and reasoning are right, you don’t have to worry about anybody else.’

‘It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.’

‘The first rule is not to lose. The second rule is not to forget the first rule.’

‘Only buy something that you’d be perfectly happy to hold if the market shut down for 10 years.’

‘I will tell you how to become rich. Close the doors. Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful.’

‘Why not invest your assets in the companies you really like? As Mae West said, ‘Too much of a good thing can be wonderful.’

‘Our favorite holding period is forever.’

‘Risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing.’

‘Time is the friend of the wonderful company, the enemy of the mediocre.’

‘Unless you can watch your stock holding decline by 50% without becoming panic-stricken, you should not be in the stock market.’

‘The critical investment factor is determining the intrinsic value of a business and paying a fair or bargain price.’

‘Investors making purchases in an overheated market need to recognize that it may often take an extended period for the value of even an outstanding company to catch up with the price they paid.’

‘Risk can be greatly reduced by concentrating on only a few holdings.’

‘It is not necessary to do extraordinary things to get extraordinary results.’

‘An investor should ordinarily hold a small piece of an outstanding business with the same tenacity that an owner would exhibit if he owned all of that business.’

‘Great investment opportunities come around when excellent companies are surrounded by unusual circumstances that cause the stock to be misappraised.’

‘In the business world, the rearview mirror is always clearer than the windshield.’

‘If a business does well, the stock eventually follows.’

‘Cash never makes us happy, but it’s better to have the money burning a hole in Berkshire’s pocket than resting comfortably in someone else’s.’

‘A public-opinion poll is no substitute for thought.’

‘I never buy anything unless I can fill out on a piece of paper my reasons. I may be wrong, but I would know the answer to that. "I’m paying $32 billion today for the Coca Cola Company because." If you can’t answer that question, you shouldn’t buy it. If you can answer that question, and you do it a few times, you’ll make a lot of money.’

‘The investor of today does not profit from yesterday’s growth.’

‘You only have to do a very few things right in your life so long as you don’t do too many things wrong.’

‘It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.’

‘You ought to be able to explain why you’re taking the job you’re taking, why you’re making the investment you’re making, or whatever it may be. And if it can’t stand applying pencil to paper, you’d better think it through some more. And if you can’t write an intelligent answer to those questions, don’t do it.’

‘Look at market fluctuations as your friend rather than your enemy; profit from folly rather than participate in it.’

‘An investor needs to do very few things right as long as he or she avoids big mistakes.’

‘Do a lot of reading’ (On how to determine the value of a business)

‘The investor of today does not profit from yesterday’s growth.’

‘Only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked.’

‘The fact that people will be full of greed, fear, or folly is predictable. The sequence is not predictable.’

‘You do things when the opportunities come along. I’ve had periods in my life when I’ve had a bundle of ideas come along, and I’ve had long dry spells. If I get an idea next week, I’ll do something. If not, I won’t do a damn thing.’

‘Time is the friend of the wonderful company, the enemy of the mediocre.’

‘I do not like debt and do not like to invest in companies that have too much debt, particularly long-term debt. With long-term debt, increases in interest rates can drastically affect company profits and make future cash flows less predictable.’

‘We will reject interesting opportunities rather than over-leverage our balance sheet.’

‘I always knew I was going to be rich. I don’t think I ever doubted it for a minute.’

‘Turnarounds seldom turn.’

‘If at first you do succeed, quit trying on investing.’

‘I don’t measure my life by the money I’ve made. Other people might, but certainly don’t.’

‘Anything can happen in stock markets and you ought to conduct your affairs so that if the most extraordinary events happen, that you’re still around to play the next day.’

‘You shouldn’t own common stocks if a 50 per cent decrease in their value in a short period of time would cause you acute distress.’

‘With few exceptions when a manager with a reputation for brilliance tackles a business with a reputation for poor economics, it is the reputation of the business which remains intact.’

‘The business schools reward complex behavior more than simple behavior, but simple behavior is more effective.’

‘It’s not debt per say that overwhelms an individual corporation or country. Rather it is a continuous increase in debt in relation to income that causes trouble.’

‘A great investment opportunity occurs when a marvelous business encounters a one-time huge, but solvable problem.’

‘You do not adequately protect yourself by being half awake when other are sleeping.’

‘We like to buy businesses, but we don’t like to sell them.’

‘Money to some extent sometimes let you be in more interesting environments. But it can’t change how many people love you or how healthy you are.’

‘It’s us fun being a gorse when the tractor comes along, or the blacksmith when the car comes along.’

‘Enjoy your work and work for whom you admire.’

‘With enough insider information and a million dollars, you can go broke in a year.’

‘Read Ben Graham and Phil Fisher read annual reports, but don’t do equations with Greek letters in them.’

‘In a commodity business, it’s very hard to be smarter than your dumbest competitor.’

‘A hyperactive stock market is the pickpocket of enterprise.’

‘Valuing a business is part art and part science.’

‘Chains of habits are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.’

Like To Talk?

1. Blog for Ad Revenue – Start a blog on a topic you love, build up a reader base and make money from ads on your site.

2. Be a Forum Moderator – Keep out the spam and build a community and you can earn a little cash on the side moderating forums.

3. Write Articles for Websites – Content is King on websites. Keeping sites updated with fresh, high quality content is a chore for website owners and often outsourced. If you’re a good writer with experience in an area you can make a living off of it.

4. Be a Guest Author – Some higher quality sites will pay between $50 – $400 for a solid article on a topic their readers are interested in. The results are never assured with this method, but many freelance writers, working at home on refurbished computers, are pulling in significant income this way.

5. Get Paid to Post in Forums – No one wants to post in an empty forum, so webmaster will hire forum posters to help kick start their forum and make it look active. Get paid between $0.10 – $0.25 per post to help get a forum started.

6. Start a Podcast – Basically the same as with a blog, but with audio or video. Talk about what you want and make money from the ads.

7. Get Paid for Forums You Already Talk On – Many forums offer a revenue share program where you can run your own ads on threads you create. This is something Destroy Debt offers. Take advantage of it.
8. Translate Documents - Automated translation is no substitute for humans. If you speak a second language, translate documents and get paid.

9. Be a Life coach or Counselor - Many people would rather talk to a counselor through the safety of the Internet. Offer your advice at an hourly rate.

Are You A Gamer?

10. Farm Gold – Regardless of which online game you like to play there’s always people selling in game money for real money. It may be against the terms of the game but it isn’t illegal. Just make sure you’re making more than your subscription fee.

11. Participate in Gaming Tournaments – If you’re good enough consider entering gaming tournaments. Several of them give away serious cash and prizes.

12. Buy In-Game Real Estate – This was popularized by Second Life. Buy and develop land in the game and it can fetch you cash in the real world. You could become a millionaire like Ansche Chung.

13. Open an In-Game Store – Another one from Second-Life. Many people have made big bucks selling tshirts, pets, and just about anything else you can imagine in the game.

14. Be a Tester – A paid game testing job is hard to come by, since so many people will do it for free, but they do exist.

Would You Like To Be A Middle Man?

15. Put a US Face on an Overseas Business – People outsource overseas because it’s much cheaper. However due to communication problems and some bad experience people are also weary of it. Find some workers overseas you can trust who have a particular talent, and open a US store front offering that service. Charge the premium rates for a US company and "oversee" the overseas work.

16. Organize Forum Posters – When starting a forum many webmasters will hire posters to get it started. Paying 50 people $5 each is a pain and you never know the kind of work you’ll get. Put together a team and provide a one stop shop for webmasters.

17. Offer Client Referral Exchanges – Programmers often will get more projects at one time than they can handle and have to refer them off. Pay these programmers 10% to refer clients to you, and charge other developers 20% to send referrals to them. Pocket the difference. The same is true with other professions.

18. Be a Link Broker – Many people want to buy quality links for their websites while others want to sell them. Be the middleman to make these connections and make a profit on the price difference.

19. Sell Websites and Domains for Others – Some people have quality websites or domains but either don’t know how or don’t have the time to go about selling them. Provide this service and charge a 10% fee.

20. Refer Others to Jobs – Many firms will pay referral bonuses of $500-$1,000+ for referring the right candidate for a job. Develop relationships with recruiters and scour job boards for candidates that fit. Make the connection and pocket the cash.

Can You Program?

21. Write Software for Resale – I’ve personally bought tools on a number of occasions I knew I could write myself just because they were cheap enough to justify buying them instead of spending the time to write it.

22. Write a Web Component – I’m sure you’ve bought fancy drop down menus, charting, comboboxes, etc before. If not with your own money than for a project at work. Write a component like this and sell it.

23. Develop Websites for Others – This is kind of a no-brainer. Do some side work, you can probably charge 2-3x per hour what you get paid for your day job. Sites like Rent A Coder and Elance can put you in contact with buyers.

24. Automate Manual Jobs and Charge per Job – I’ve seen several people asking for forms to be populated from Google Maps or Yahoo Answers data. Write a quick app to do this, but charge per entry the same as if you were manually doing it.

25. Extend Existing Software – Create a plugin, build a storefront package on top of Amazon Web Services, make a bulletin board system more SEO friendly, or whatever you dream up. By extending the functionality of existing software, you can quickly build a user base.

26. Start Your Own Search Engine – Not from scratch, Google provides a great API for you to build your own custom search engine. Build one around a certain topic, provide a better design or give out random prizes. When people search from your site and click on the ads, you get credit.

27. Build Canned Websites for Resell – Create a website for a particular industry once, give it a descent admin and then resell copies of it over and over.
