Skipping Class in the Name of Science

For the first time in 10 years, Math Club members ventured to UCSD to attend the Kyoto Prize Symposium. We enjoyed presentations on thought-provoking topics in science and visited with other STEM enthusiasts. Some of us even got a picture with the incredibly brilliant engineer Carver Mead! The experience gave us the opportunity to connect and provided much to reflect upon. Although we missed our classes that day, we made memories that will last a lifetime.

Breaking the Limits of Mathematical Physics

Infinity and Beyond

Stop by OC3509 this Friday, September 20th for the Math Club's first presentation of the semester! It will be hosted by MiraCosta's own Rachid Atmai. We will start at 1pm and, as always, there will be pizza; don't miss out on this rare opportunity to gain a new perspective on the meaning of infinity.

Here is a brief abstract from professor Rachid:

Hermann Weyl famously said that mathematics is the scientific study of infinity. The goal of this talk will thus be to present an overview of the concept of infinity in mathematics. Infinity manifests itself in different ways throughout mathematics and sometimes in physics and even theoretical computer science (computational complexity). In mathematics, infinity shows up in number theory, topology, differential topology and many other fields of research but it is the central topic of study and research in set theory.

AMATYC Preparation

The Math Club meets today, and every Friday, from 1pm-3pm in room OC3509!

On days when there are no scheduled events/speakers, we will work together on different AMATYC math competition practices. The AMATYC (American Math Association for Two Year Colleges) hosts two nation-wide competitions, both of which MiraCosta College regularly participates in: First is the Student Mathematics League, which hundreds of MiraCosta students participate in every semester; it is a competitive, individual-effort, 20 question exam covering math topics up to, but excluding, calculus. Second is the new Student Research League, which is an annual mathematics research competition for teams of 3 covering a variety of subjects.
