Saeed Ajmal became World No. 2 Test bowler

Pakistan’s magical off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has claimed the second position in ICC Test ranking of bowlers. Australia skipper Michael Clarke has taken over Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara as No.1 Test batsman.

South Africa pacer Vernon Philander’s ordinary performance in the ongoing Test series in Australia became the reason of the elevation of Saeed Ajmal, who is the currently the top-ranked ODI and T20 bowler.

Philander arrived in Australia as No.2 Test bowler but failed to claim a single wicket in the drawn first Test in Brisbane. He missed the second Test in Adelaide due to back strain.

Though both Saeed Ajmal and Philander have equal 132 rating points but the former was ahead with a few frictional points. No other Pakistani bowler has been included in top-ten. South Africa’s Dale Styen is still present at the summit with 858 rating points.

Clarke retrieved his No.1 Test ranking after his record breaking 230 in the second Test against South Africa in Adelaide. It was Clarke’s fourth double hundred of the year, a feat which has been recorded for the first time.

Clarke, who had started the year in 20th position, moved past Sangakkara and South African duo Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis to claim the top-spot with 890 points.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who slammed a double century and unbeaten 150 in the recently-concluded Test series in Bangladesh, has moved up to third place after rising two places.

England’s Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen have clinched the 6^th and 7^th positions respectively after slamming centuries in England’s series-leveling 10-wicket victory over India in second Test in Mumbai.

Telenor Pakistan Ranked the Most Socially Devoted Brand on Facebook

Telenor Pakistan has said that it has been ranked as the most socially devoted brand on Facebook in Pakistan for the month of October.

Telenor claimed this citing a study that was carried out by Socialbakers, a global social media and digital analytics company with customers in 75 countries.

According to the Q3 regional report released by Socialbakers, Telenor Pakistan’s Corporate Facebook page has shown the highest response rate for the month of October.

The average response rate is calculated by number of questions brands answered minus question that went unanswered on its Facebook wall. Telenor Pakistan’s response rate for the month of October stood at a staggering 93%.

Just to explain, it merits mentioning here that Telenor is not the top “Talked About” brands of Pakistan on Facebook. Instead, Telenor Pakistan is ranked first for responding to most number of the questions coming from its fans (customers).

Talking about the significance of social media, Director Marketing Usman Javaid said, “Social media is an important tool in engaging with the customers. It gives us a chance to directly interact with our customer base and I am pleased to see that we are not only highly responsive but have been acknowledged for our efforts on a global level. We are committed to our customers and will continue to provide quality services through each and every channel available to us.”

Telenor has said that Djuice, Talkshawk and Easypaisa were also ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively on the charts, further illustrating Telenor Pakistan’s commitment to customer care using the social media channel.

How to Get Your 1st Job on oDesk, Elance, Freelancer?

I am a Freelance Graphic Designer and I am well established on oDESK , Elance having completed more than 150 Contracts for the clients all around the globe.

This wasn’t achieved in a day or a month. I had to struggle hard when I started my career as a freelance Graphic designer, but i kept trying and kept learning new techniques and kept climbing up the ladder to reach where I am comfortably placed today.

I know there are thousands of talented people trying on oDESK , Elance or on Freelancer but are out of luck after months of struggle that’s why this article is going to be a major part of your escape route from this hard luck.

There are many things you might not doing rightly or correctly that’s why (despite having all the talent) you are not getting hired, so this post will highlight some basic areas which you need to work on and you will see the amazing results very soon.

Following set of tips were written by a great fellow Hussain on oDESK forum and I am sharing them here because these are the pretty much what the whole debate is all about, so lets start.

P.S. We are assuming that you are skilled enough, but you are struggling with getting the projects (not with the abilities to work).

1). The most important thing, after joining oDESK/Elance/Freelancer, is to carefully read the terms & conditions and policies. These are a great information resource for newbies. You will find them in their Help section.

2). Make a comprehensive profile. Provide true information about your Education, Work Experience, Skills & any Certificates you possess. Complete your profile 100%.

3). Know your skills & abilities. You should be well aware of what you can do and what is beyond your working capabilities.

4). Take oDESK/Elance/Freelancer Tests to prove your skills. The better you score in oDESK/Elance/Freelancer tests, the better you’ve chances to succeed. (First take oDESK/Elance Readiness Test).

5). Carefully read the Job Description. Usually clients clearly mention their requirements in the job description. You should read the job description twice, very carefully & then ask yourself. Can you do it? If you can offer the client, what he’s looking for, then apply on that job, if not, then don’t bother.

6). Cover Letter, in my opinion, is the BACK BONE of the hiring process. After profile, cover letter is the 2nd thing, which will make a client contact you. Write your cover letter in response to the job description. NEVER EVER USE THE SAME COVER LETTER FOR EVERY JOB.

7). Same cover letters implies that you didn’t take the time to read the job description & usually the client will not bother to read your cover letter. It’s Simple. If you didn’t read the job description, why would the client read your cover letter?

8). In cover letter, explain your skills & abilities in short & to the point. Don’t write long paragraphs.

9). Rate Recommendation: Some contractors may not agree with me, but in my opinion, initially a contractor should start with low rates.

REASON: Though you might be an experienced person in your life, but the fact is, you’re new on oDESK/Elance/Freelancer & in order to prove your skills on there, first you need some work history on your profile. As soon as you’re awarded a couple of contracts & you’ve successfully completed them, with a Good Feedback Score, then it’s time to increase your rates anytime.

11). After applying to a job, be patient. If you’ve done it right & gave the client a reason to contact you, then you’ll definitely get a response, from the client. (Hopefully Positive)

12). Even if you’re rejected from a job, don’t lose hope. Keep trying & you’ll succeed.

So These were the 12 Tips to Get First JOB on a Freelance Network like oDESK ,Elance and Freelancer.

AIOU to establish regional campus in Chitral

Chitral, Vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University Islamabad (AIOU) Professor Dr. Nazir Ahmad Sangi reached on 5 days visit to Chitral, which aims to establish here regional campus of the university.

VC meets district coordination officer Chitral and offer him that if district administration provide them piece of land they will establish a building with the cost of 100 million.

Different issues were discussed during the meeting and DCO Chital proposed to include a subject for students of Religious Madaras so that they will be loyalist for Pakistan.

VC said that we have changed Islamiat subject and introduced it with a new patron to guide our students as a best citizen. Their behaviors also will be changed, he added. He said that the university can introduce any subject for Chitral students like tourism promoting, handicraft, livestock etc.

He said that if a regional campus was established here it will facilitate students in video conferences, workshop, training and a study center as well as examination Hall. And he allocates 100 million for this purpose. It was decided during the meeting to approach to Chief Secretary KPK for this purpose and copy to be recognized to DCO for checking it. Vice chancellor also visited Kalash valley and meet different students at Bumborat.

He guaranteed them for appointing a separate regional coordinator for Kalash valleys to facilitate students of three valleys regarding providing them admission forms, date sheet and other information.

He also emphasized the local people to provide them land for construction of a study center of AIOU in the valley. During his visit to Kalasha Dur (Museum) he discussed different issues with Museum In-charge Akram Hussain and emphasized them to must preserve their century’s old culture.

An education conference was held at Commerce college hall where Vice chancellor was chief guest and the conference was presided over by Sahibuddin Principal of the college. Speakers on the occasion expressed their views and thanked him for paying visit to Chitral Principal of Govt. Centennial Model High School Chitral.

Young lovers Saira and Shahroz tie the knot

Welcoming The Mirchu.com into his home on Saturday evening, 25-year-old Shahroz and his better half were ecstatic about sharing their romantic journey and their intimatenikaah ceremony.

“We met at a mutual friend, Ali Tariq’s wedding,” Shahroz begins, talking about the first time he saw Saira before she joins us. “That was six years ago! I was 19 and she was 18. During events like the mehendi, dholkis, dance practices, I started to like her,” he says. Abandoning all notions of bashfulness, he adds: “Before that, I had seen her in a couple of ads and had thought to myself — who is this cute girl in town?”

Wearing a casual red shirt with jeans, Shahroz gets comfortable on a sofa and talks about his induction into showbiz. “I am a parchee,” he says, admitting that he had help from his father Behroze, who is a senior actor in our entertainment industry. He also says that his father saw the talent in him. “Dad would initially make phone calls [within the industry] to cast me as an actor in upcoming plays,” he adds. He then smiles and reiterates his initial view: “That makes me a parchee.”

As the conversation progresses, Saira walks into the room, radiant and adorable in jeans and a white top, bearing her contagious trademark smile. As he glances at his pretty 24-year-old wife with Afghani features, his eyes light up. Clearly, he is head over heels in love.

But while the young couple started dating in 2006, their relationship saw its shares of ups and downs. Both, however, refuse to acknowledge that they had ever completely broken things off. “We were together on and off,” Sabzwari says disappointed. “Other things mattered more at the time and we grew apart.”

Shahroz adopts a sincere and open stance as he explains the shortcomings he had when he was younger. “For a 19-year-old, I was really immature and Saira was way more mature than any girl at 18!” He adds, “I was very insecure and over-possessive about her then.”

He fondly recalls memories of their teens. “She literally grew up in this house! We used to hang out so often. Our families knew each other and her parents often visited our place,” he says.

At this point, Saira speaks up. She says that even during their break-ups, she knew they were made for each other. “He started dating again and went out with a couple of other girls,” she says, in a playful tone. But Shahroz is quick to interrupt her as he interjects with “just a few!”.

With a chuckle, Yousuf continues. She explains that in her heart, she knew that there was a strong connection between them. “I somehow knew he will come back to me!” she shares.

Shahroz continues, saying that the couple has scores of mutual friends who always pictured them together, despite them being apart. “It was always ‘Saira-Shahroz’ for them even when we weren’t together,” he says with a smile. Even when they were not dating, they say they were always civil towards each other and accepted TV play offers, when they were cast in the same production.

It was the new drama, “Tanhaiyaan: Naye Silsilay” that brought them back together. “In this play, there were love scenes between us; either she was wooing me or I her,” Shahroz says with excitement. “Although we were always civil with each other, the passion was there and I fell in love with her again.”

But Saira felt differently. “I was cordial and the attraction was there, but at the end I knew it [being formal] was going nowhere!” She continues, “I told him we should stop fighting. For him, whenever we were civil, we ended up talking about marriage.”

He took the plunge and popped the question, asking for her hand in marriage and — like the romantic that he is — wanting to elope. “Let’s go to the mosque and do it,” Shahroz had said to her at the time. “We will let the families know later.”

Saira was more composed, and decided that involving the families is a better idea. “Let’s go the right way,” she had told him. That’s when Shahroz told his father. From being a ‘baat pakki’ event, upon the parents’ insistence, it transpired into an intimate nikaah ceremony. Shahroz’s mother designed an ivory-coloured chicken-kari outfit with kaamdani work for Saira. Thus, on October 21 — the date when they were supposed to exchange rings — they became husband and wife.

Saira shares how their friends’ reacted to the development. “When we were hanging out, it was acceptable to everyone because dating and party ‘scene on hai’,” she says. “But when we announced our marriage, they felt it was too early for us to settle down.”

“They forget that we grew up together,” Saira adds. “We experienced each other as friends first; then we grew apart and came back to one another. I believe we are good together.”

Since then, some friends have bombarded Shahroz with questions like: “When is the doomsday, yaar?” Other people in the media industry, have said: “Your career is over, dude!” Shahroz doesn’t appreciate such remarks, “Bakwas! We believe in fate, we will be together,” he says with pride. “With this development, we have gained immense popularity and respect from our fans.”

Agreeing that the feeling of being married has not sunk in yet, both of them say that they will support each other in their professions. “We don’t like to control each other. We give each other the space that’s needed. I don’t like to interfere in her work or her life and neither does she in mine,” says Shahroz.

With a rukhsati ceremony scheduled to be held in December this year, the honeymoon is likely to be in either Australia or Europe. “We like old heritage buildings,” says a beaming Shahroz. “We’re fine with a cup of tea at a roadside café,” he smiles.

As our meeting came to an end, Shahroz lovingly put his arm around his wife. The couple laughed as Shahroz said he is happy to spend money on their honeymoon, cheekily adding that she is a shopaholic. We wish them a happily married life!

Comedian Sikandar Sanam passes away

KARACHI: Famous comedian Sikandar Sanam, who was recently diagnosed with liver cancer, passed away on Monday.

The Express Tribune learnt about Sanam’s death from a close associate of his. The news was further confirmed by someone close to Furqan Haider – current owner of City Auditorium.

“He [Sanam] passed away this afternoon. The body will arrive in Karachi from Nawabshah within four hours,” Haider’s close associate said.

The actor was admitted to Aga Khan University Hospital in September. He was later discharged from the facility.

Haider, the man who claims to have introduced Sanam to the world of theatre had earlier informed The Express Tribune that ARY Digital was trying to arrange for him to be treated at one of the best hospitals in Mumbai, which is known for curing a large number of patients suffering from cancer.

Sanam was known for his parodies of famous Bollywood movies.

Life as an artist

Belonging to a family of artists, Sanam – whose real name was Muhammad Sikander – found inspiration in his father, Late Syed Abdul Sattar Shoqeen Jetpuri who was a well known Gujrati poet. He always wanted to become a singer and was known for his voice during his school days. However, he soon realised his real strength was comedy as he formally joined the Karachi theatre.

Sanam started off his career with theatre giants like Moin Akhtar and later on with Umer Sharif. After working as a junior artist in a number of theatre plays, he slowly started getting noticed for his stage performances. This was when he changed his name to “Sikander Sanam” to reflect the love bestowed on him by his admirers.

Be it the character of a 60-year-old widow, an eager bachelor, a college-going boy or a thug from Laloo Kheth (an area in Karachi), Sanam really knew how to tickle the funny bone and rightly changed his name.

When we reached at Atari Border, in Pakistan side, in contrast with our perception, amazingly we didn’t see heavy deployment of armed persons in and around immigration centre. Instead, those polite officers of immigration centre welcomed us and after knowing that we came from India, they offered us cold water too. One of them , also handed over me a bottle filled with cold water and told that I should keep it for the way.

Regardless of our individual identity, we all were only Indian or Pakistanis on the borders of both sides. Our passports have been checked several times during crossing the border, intelligence units tried to ask so many things before crossing the border, however they all were very cooperative. When they knew that the visit is all about strengthening the Indo Pak relation, they became more supportive.

I can say without fear that some of them were not so generous, may be it was because of their tough training, mindsets or some practical experiences or anything else. i experienced some rude behavior of these men with/without uniforms who seems with some negativity and stress. On the other hand, some others were not only polite but also had positive hope for the future and they were willing to have a strong relations of friendship between the countries.

By this experience, it seems that its all depends on a person regardless of his country and job, to make himself aligned towards humanity. In my view, the role and responsibilities of security personals of any country is just to check on crime and thus to help in maintaining peace. If it is, then they must have filled with positive hope and energy to make their job more fruitful.

Role of these security personals are really important. These are the first people who experience the behavior of persons of both sides, and similarly these are the first persons whose behavior was experienced by the persons who crossed the borders. This first experience, in my view , must be such that we both should not be felt like stranger and feared, instead, the gesture must be friendly and polite. In practical, every outsider first meet with a common soldier and immigration officers of the country posted at borders. They are the first persons who represent the country as a whole only with their behavior.

Atari border has been developed in terms of its infrastructure and in India side, lot of renovations has been made to provide easiness to travelers. A comfortable bus service provided from Immigration centre to main gate of border (only about 500 meters). It is good to see that trade is continuing between us.Trucks were lined up on border for transporting goods across borders. I heard that crossing trucks from one country to other is not permitted and then both sides of trucks load and unload the goods to/from each other’s trucks.

It was a visit that kind of pulls me again and again to revisit. I hope and believe that we will get some sort of more relaxation on visa to get it accomplished. It will certainly be a tour to get experience of similar culture, love, emotions and feelings that, probably cannot be expressed in the form of words.
