I know it's worth it but I was always looking for a way to speed up that process. I now use a Midi controller. What a midi controller will do is connect to your PC via USB and communicates with the DAW's knobs, volume sliders, so you can control it with knob's, sliders, or buttons on your controller. So now when I am working on a track I have a live instrument and the possibilities are limitless. I can quickly fade an instrument out or effect and bring a new one in to change up my sound, or I can press a button and bring in a new drum pattern. I have saved so much time and work and its fun. I mean who wants to say a mouse is my instrument. This will get you more into the creative process and you will have idea's you never even thought about.

The only Midi controllers I have laid my hands are the Korg nanoKontrol, nanokey, and nanopad. I love it and couldn't imagine making my music without them. I have to say if you are just wanting to try one out you have to get the nanoKontrol, because it's cheap very versatile. It will streamline your thought process and help you try more idea's out faster. I have found in online for $59.99, so if you are wanting to step out of the click, drag, and drop method of production check out the Korg nano series.

Here is a video of it in action so you can see how it will help your production and possibly very soon your live performances.

If it is not of course you can still use my links to samples, flps, and midi files to help you out in another DAW.

Let's get started. To Import a midi file all you have to do is open FL Studio. Click File>Import>Midi File. Then navigate to your downloads folder or wherever you saved your midi file. It will import into your step sequencer as notes. You can play it as is but I would recommend right clicking the name of the instrument in the sequencer and replacing it with a new sound you created. Here is a link to a video to help you understand what we covered.

Okay so we got how to import midi files down hopefully that will get you headed in the right direction and give you an idea of what a real song will look like within the piano roll.

Here are a few sites with some free midi files.
Here is a link to some free VST's:
The sounds it generates range from quite subtle to extremely bizarre, depending on how much you tweak the controls. Effects can either be programmed by hand to create specific desired patterns; chosen pseudo-randomly based on each effect’s probability level, with a user-defined seed value that optionally allows the same sequence of “random” effects to be chosen each time; or combined into a mixture of both methods to suite your own tastes."

This is one of my all time favorites use it on many many tracks.

If you have any questions I will respond to your questions and do my best to help or point you in the right direction to get help. As a producer I know it is hard to find helpful free resources in such a secretive music world, so I plan to make that first step into music production a little easier with a streamlined blog dedicated to free knowledge into the electronic music scene.

I would recommend FL studio. I have produced with FL studio for about 5 years now, and haven't been let down on versatility yet.. After you download your DAW. I would recommend starting to watch video tutorials because navigating around the DAW can be confusing at first sight.
