Be Happy this New Year!

This new year let us usher in happy thoughts and happy positive vibes and build resilience to face the "highs and lows" of life.

Let us equip ourselves with proactive ideas and themes, checks and balances in our life areas. This orientation will promote wellbeing for us as well our families, friends and communities -.all throughout the year.

In the poem "Daffodils" William Wordsworth captures the quiet beauty and liveliness of nature that can uplift drooping spirits. The "show" of brightly coloured daffodils " tossing their heads in sprightly dance" is a "herald of Spring" - bringing in optimism of renewal and new beginnings.

The poet also conveys the power of joyous memories to transform our moods of melancholy and loneliness to evoke tranquility and joy.

A holistic approach to be happy, would emphasize self-care as well as connecting with others We can start with ourselves and practice self-care, orienting for our overall wellbeing. However, we also need to focus on giving and receiving pleasant or joyful experiences in our people relationships.

be built upon themes and ideas such as follows

New opportunities and interests: searching for new opportunities and interests and pursuing them consistently, with satisfaction and joy. We move ahead in life, then sometimes we review our paths to pick up some missing links from our school days, required for our harmony. These subjects too contribute to our wellbeing - for Psychologists say that “there is a child, an adult and a parent in every man”.

They help us in our life journey - we acquire basic skills required to achieve goals in our personal and work areas.

Our academic learning of the Arts, Languages, Science and Technology, Social Sciences as well as our experiences, equip us to enjoy success and face challenges in the same stride.

Our modern lifestyle and current activities, demand different life skills. A Teaching and Learning site with a “Broad Reserve of Resources” would be a dependable source for providing the right solution.

Anxiety and Joy are emotions or states of the mind which we all experience. Since, they are 2 important factors for our wellbeing, knowing how to balance them is a key to our wellness. The dark clouds of Anxiety, can be balanced to lesser anxiety and we can even make our minds ready to experience Joy.

Modern lifestyle is accompanied by its fair share of anxiety. The reason or reasons for our anxiety may be within ourselves, or in the external economic or social environment. There is surely no magic formula to "Turn around our 'Anxiety' to 'Feel Good' ”

A "Comprehensive" or "wholistic" (holistic) approach would as in most life issues, require our efforts at the body, mind and spirit levels

Role of Food in "Stress and Anxiety":

We may take note that Food also has a role as regards our “Anxiety” and “Feel Good” or “Be happy” conditions and dispositions. Studies indicate that too much refined and processed foods, a very acidic diet and food with unhealthy added sugars & chemical additives play a negative role, as regards our well-being.

However, Pure Water, alkaline forming foods & drinks and certain food nutrients play a positive role to bring about the “feel good” states of our body and mind

In our current times, Stress factors and conditions have “come to stay”. So, we might as well “come to terms” with them. However when we allow them to remain for a long term without being checked or managed well (Coping with Stress), this may lead to Anxiety and related disorders.

Vitamin B complex comprise the eight B vitamins — B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12. It refers to all of the known essential water-soluble vitamins except for vitamin C: thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid(B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin, folic acid, and the cobalamins (B12). B vitamins are all important for cell metabolism and energy.

A deficiency in certain nutrients such as the B vitamins and minerals such as Magnesium, may also contribute to stress and anxiety. Also stress in turn, depletes these stress relieving vitamins and minerals. Therefore, as regards nutritional support for stress and anxiety, we can include foods rich in specific nutrients such as - B Group vitamins, vitamins A, C, D & E, and minerals such as Calcium, Iron, Magnesium and Zinc in our diet.

Nutrition supplements as per medical advice may also be needed to restore our health and "feel good".

When we nurture good and comparable Give & Take relationships, all of us stand to gain. Or else we lose one way or the other ………at some point of time. Thus when we give knowledge we also gain knowledge. When we sell good produce we gain good reputation, which shall pay us back in future.

When we are eco-friendly we enjoy a better quality of life. When we spread hygiene & health, we are more likely to avoid factors that cause sickness and keep healthy ourselves.

Let us keep in mind that nurturing good people relationships and a nature loving lifestyle, eliminate many physical and psychological "stressors" that cause anxiety.

Fermentation as a phenomenon and its uses, has an ancient history and continues to be a dynamic area in modern times. This basically natural phenomenon involves microorganisms and the enzymes they produce. Fermentation is being researched, modified and put to a plethora of uses that enrich our lives. We mostly associate microorganisms and pathogens with the harm and havoc they do to our health, environment, property and other assets - and our pockets! Let us now consider the contributions of benign microorganisms.

Fermentation involves the conversion of carbohydrates to alcohols and carbon dioxide or organic acids using microorganisms such as yeasts and bacteria, under anaerobic (lack of oxygen) conditions. The organic acids formed, such as lactic and acetic acid, have a preservative function. For example, Lactic acid produced by the fermentation of milk by lactic acid bacteria preserves cheese, yogurt and other fermented milk products.

In the late 1850’s Louis Pasteur, well known for his exceptional contributions to microbiology and medicine, showed that fermentation is a metabolic process and the result of the action of living microorganisms. He identified yeast as a living organism, which fermented or converted sugar to alcohol. In 1897 Eduard Buchner a German scientist further discovered that a secretion of yeast caused the fermentation of sugar. ................
He demonstrated that the yeast secretion (which he called zymase) fermented sugar even when there were no living yeast cells in the mixture. Later, the term enzyme came to be applied to all ferments. Now we know that fermentation is caused by enzymes that are produced by microorganisms.

Fermentation is the core process of numerous natural phenomena. We have come a long way from fermented fruit and vegetable products mainly alcoholic beverages such as beers and wines, leavened bakery products and pickles. Research has discovered that this process is “initiated, conducted, and controlled” by microbes such as bacteria, yeast and moulds. Microbes especially microbes that contribute positively by their metabolic activity, play important roles as regards our nutrition, digestion and health. The fermentation of milk to yoghurt is a desirable food fermentation, involving the lactic acid bacteria, lactobacillaceae, which has the ability to produce lactic acid from carbohydrates. Another benign bacteria, the acetic acid producing acetobacter species is involved in the fermentation of fruits and vegetables. The acid byproducts of the metabolic processes taking place within the bacteria as they grow, helps to preserve the food products. Friendly bacteria that are present in our digestive tract produce specific enzymes which help our digestion. Production of antibiotics is another important contribution of Microbial fermentation. Many antibiotics used currently are produced using microbes.

Microbes help maintain our environment – air, water, and land. Microbial activity has been applied to precipitate out, toxic substances and metals such as iron, that are present above tolerable limits in drinking water. Microorganisms are being effectively used in pollution control, pest and waste management. They work along with us to make our land and water resources cleaner and also to develop our agriculture, the eco-friendly way.

Microorganisms even enable our industrial growth. Microbial fermentations are used as an alternative, or as a supplement to chemical manufacture of industrial products such as alcohols and acetone. In industry, the extraction of metals from ores (even from low-grade ores} with the help of microorganisms is done by using controlled fermentation techniques. The contributions of benign microorganisms are innumerable – their presence and activities make our earth a better place to live.
