Heh - that's why I love biology - you never know what you'll discover. You ask one question, and in trying to answer it you are bombarded with another ten, all of which are more interesting than the original one!

And so it came to pass on a rainy day in Manchester I had to give a talk and be interrogated by two people for about three hours.

After four years, I was going to sit down with two examiners and defend my PhD thesis.

The day started like any other. The day started at 7am when I woke up. I went to the office to have a chat with my Little Boss, and get ready and acclimatized for the talk later on in the day. Around 11am I gave my talk, summarizing in about half hour my work over the past four years. Then I had a bite to eat and then I went in to the Conference room and sat there for three hours while my two examiners took turns to grill me and find holes in my research.

However, rejoice! After three hours (that passed like they where ten minutes to be honest) I was told that I am now a Doctor of Philosophy in Cancer and Imaging sciences!!! Woohoo!

Time to celebrate and dance naked in the streets of Wherever!!

Pasta, Gogo's Style

A very simple recipe for past al furno (sort of).

What you need:
1. As much past as you can fit into your favourite pyrex (don't use spaghetti, but any type of pasta is fine)
2. Ham, bacon, mushrooms - as much as you want
3. Cheese (I used Mozzarella and Parmezana, but can use whatever you want I guess)
4. 1kg Tomato sauce for pasta (you can make your own with a bit of basil or buy one from the store)
5. 100-200ml double cream

First you need some preparation work. Chop the ham, bacon, mushrooms and the mozzarella cheese into nice little pieces. You can do that while the cooking the pasta, or before hand - its up to you!!

When the pasta is ready, put a bit (1/5th) of the pasta sauce in the pyrex and spread it at the bottom. This is crucial so that the food does not stick on the pyrex. Then add a layer of pasta, a layer of your ham/bacon/mushrooms/cheese mix. Add a layer of pasta sauce. Then repeat the process until your ingredients are over or you reach the top of the pyrex.

Once you've done all this, add any remaining ham/bacon/mushrooms and pasta sauce on top so that you don't throw them away. Then add your double cream on top of all that, and then spread your second (preferably salted) cheese on that.

You can then put the food into the oven and cook at 180C for about 20 to 30 minutes.

At the end of that it should look something like this:

And remember! With this food you can experiment as much as you want and nothing will go wrong!

Travelling. Such a simple concept. Such a difficult process.

It has been some time now that I have not been on a plane or a train or some other machine that takes you from the place you hate (at least at the end, just before you go on holidays), to the place that you hope will love. The process, I am sure, has not changed. It is always the same. You wake up, if you have managed to sleep for a few hours, go the the airport (for instance, but the same applies for any other “port”) and there queue for what seems like an eternity. Get greeted by a member of stuff that is so bored by the meaningless service he/she provides. Curse the day you were born to have ended up in the slowest queue of all, with the idiot who cannot tell right from left and top to bottom. It's not fucking rocket science! For fucks sake! Leave the counter with a half smile and a half-hearted “have a nice trip!”. It is probably the only wish that is also a curse at the same instant.

Moving on, trying not to let things like this ruin your long awaited holidays so early on – I mean you are still at the point of origin, maybe an hour away of your warm and comfortable bed. You could go back, but you wont. You then end up in the next queue, even longer and slower than the first, with maybe one hundred people trying to go through the “security check” and into the paradise of duty-free shopping. Capitalists. Consumerism will one day ruin this world. Remember I said so. For I am right. Anyway, you ponder on the philosophical question of why in Hell do they staff the fucking security check with give-six people when they have hundreds of people queuing, and so many fucking machines inactive? For the love of everything that is holy man, just bring more people in this unholy hour of the day and just make this fucking queue go faster! Fuck man. Seriously.

Once this is over and done, again you fight the urge to scream for five solid minutes, just to get the rage out of you. You go have a coffee, you read your book, maybe you shop, maybe you work. Maybe you sleep, but maybe you don't. It does not really matter. In just a few hours you will arrive at Paradise – you hope. You go to the gate early, not because you will get in the plane faster, but for the change of scenery. And then this five year old decides that it would be very funny to start screaming every other second, at the top of his fucking voice. His parents do nothing, you feel like Herod, you just want to fucking make this fucking kid, fucking shut the hell up, and learn fucking manners! But you restrain yourself – for good or ill – and let it pass. Again. This goes on forever. With your couple of hours of sleep, at best, and with the kid screaming you think your head is going to explode!

Once on the plane merciful sleep embraces you. Oblivion. Oh dear lord! One step closer to Heaven!

But then.. Terror!

One more fucking airport, one more fucking member of staff who does not even care to reply in the same language that you asked the fucking question, one more fucking queue, a few more fucking miles to walk to reach the next fucking queue, to sit for another fucking couple of hourse pretending to read, pretending to work, trying to sleep, but always being annoyed by a fucking kid who is still screaming! In a different country, a different fucking continent, a different fucking kid does this all over again.

A fucking conspiracy.

In the end you end up to where the next plane will get you, the doors open and you hope for the Gardens of Eden, pleasant, calm and quiet fucking paradise. You might be lucky, but then again most people are not.

Heaven doesn't exist dude. It's all a fucking myth to make you jump through hoops until you get a few days of holidays, go through all kinds of hell to fucking reach the advertised Heaven, just to realise that Heaven is an illusion. Heaven is fake. Heaven is where your dreams come to die and haunt you. Heaven is where problems do not have solutions. Heaven is black and miserable. There are no angels. Its better in hell.

Something weird is going on, ya know?

It feels like, I don't have the words to describe it.

In about a weeks time (plus a couple of days) I will be finally submitting my theses. My work over the last 4 years in the lab will be scrutinized extensively, and then (probably on the 4th of December) I will have to endure the torment of the examination/thesis defence (aka, the VIVA).

Anyway.

I can't sleep at night. I can't wake up in the morning (probably due to the sleeping late thing). I'm constantly tired (due to the aforementioned insomnia kind of thing).

And to top it all up, it appears that even thought I havent been leaving the house a lot these past couple of months, I have developed a constant cold that is _just_ driving me insane!

On the bright side, I'll have four days of holidays before I come back and start looking for a job (LOL) and studying for the VIVA.
