It doesn’t get more sophisticated than that. A friend, J, told me that he never really appreciated the fine arts. He feels it’s pretentious. I told him that it’s the people who “appreciate” them that are pretentious. Now before you maul me for saying that, I know you will agree with me that there will be some people who will try to make the arts more complicated than it actually is.

Frankly, I feel the same as J does sometimes. For someone who is untrained in the arts (though I wanted to be an artist when I was a kid), art galleries intimidate me. It’s as if you would need formal education to actually be able to see what ‘they’ do (hello, The Emperor’s New Clothes, anyone?).

But since having M around, I realized one thing: art is whatever you make it to be. It’s as expressive as how you let it; as dumb or as intellectual as how you make it. Art should be whatever it makes you feel.

M’s drawing above is so open to interpretation that I wouldn’t even judge you if you feel like it’s just a messy scrawl of a 5-year-old. Or if you think that it’s a representation of the existential properties of rain and its implications on the human psychosis, or whatever suits your fancy, go ahead.

Make it for whatever it makes you feel. That’s the whole point of expression, right?

Like I said, I think kids are much more at home in colorful clothes than all white. Besides, when you’re a parent, a kid in white is synonymous to chaos — in washing clothes. You just wouldn’t dare.

This little girl has also just successfully imprinted her hand on the wall of preschool life.

Thank you so much for praying, laughing and crying with us, for sharing with our adventures throughout 5 years of M-wackiness. Ninongs, ninangs (even if we don’t see you very often), titas, titos, generous lolos and lolas, (yes, she has more than 1 pair thanks to our big family; how luckier can any kid get?), friends and countrymen — you are all part of that adventure. Thank you.

Now thanks to K-12, there’ll be 17 more years of schooling to go (can’t say I’m entirely thrilled). After that, well, I’m hoping she’s grown to be the right person who will be able to deal with life. Whatever kind that may be in the future. I know some of you will be part of her learning — the good kind — so for that, here’s an advanced Thank You.

M is a testament that good things can come from man-made catastrophes. Wouldn’t you agree?

The kid is crying. The mean kid took the toy of Fek without his permission. So he cried a river.

‘Hey that’s my toy’, Fek cried. The mean kid gave her most evil grin and did not return Fek’s toy.

Well at least the non-toxic, really squishy ones like Play Doh. At one bazaar though, we came across this curious alternative to clay: Fun Polydots.

It’s squishy, sticky, and forms whatever shape you want, just like clay. But it doesn’t get under your nails, nor is it hard to scrape off surfaces even after making strawberry pancakes. The stuff is made up of tiny dots of styro beads, but I think these are the non-toxic ones. At least that what the importer said.

No Valentine’s Day post here, sorry. Lots of art, that’s what we have. Soft foam cut outs make  for great arts and crafts projects. Not to mention they also give that 3D feel I bought these at Daiso (P88/big pack) and has lasted about a month so far with her. This card she made for Teacher’s Day today. I only traced a heart for her to cut out; the rest is all her.

Teacher’ going to be proud

M , spotted. Wearing a checkered button down (which used to be a dress, but since she has such a small frame, still fits), blue leggings, white wedge sandals, and an attitude.

Wait, what? Against my (and the doctor’s advice because she was diagnosed with a flat foot) preference, she wears her wedge sandals whenever she likes it — which is most of the time. She calls it her ‘killer heels’. An unfortunate/fortunate-in-the-future thing caused by viewing 2 titas’ fashionable blogs: Ninang Kookie and Tita Mariel. She actually tells me which outfits she likes. Goodness.

We’ve reached a compromise though: she can wear her ‘killer heels’ on occasions where she doesn’t have to run around and walk a lot, and alternate wearing them to school every other day (which she takes off anyway because they wear slippers in the classroom; yey, mommy – 1, killer heels – 0).

I’m a flats kind of person and as much as possible that’s what she wears too. But there’s Lola, who spoils her apo every now and then, so that trumps my card. How about you, if you have (or would have) a daughter, would you let her wear ‘killer heels’?
