We were in a constant waking sense of wonder.
You and I were the thrill of unexplored caves,
or brooks freed from restraint, chattering and giggling
we fell hard into life. We were foolhardy like anything.
We’d cut loose from our parents’ crazy warnings, yet
still loaded with their burdenous fears. We were shrill
delight, and we shattered their limits, splitting seconds
into danger as we scooped up the night’s light, bright
as moonshine that enlightened our youthful passion.

I am tireless in my pursuit to satisfy. I split the day
in two, light from dark – I splice and cut apart sweet
slumber, stripped pale white and persuaded from
wakefulness. By day I spoon clouds, but by night,
I scoop moonshine on sleep, and load the throats
of dreams with chattering caves. Misty memories
drink at giggling brooks, full as sky with shattered
and scattered wishes on stars – anything fluid
that quenches lullabies from lips. I am parched
from song but I sing anyway — dry high notes
for your frayed sense of craziness because dreams
are deep in your nature. Dream, I am the sandman.
