Apartment Balcony Gardening - 2

Almost a month ago I researched and planted (with help) a Balcony Garden.. I planted Tomatoes, Coriander, Basil, Mint and some pretty marigolds.. I've a balcony basket, a couple of long pots and a few wee round ones.

Lately with Auckland's recent "weather bomb" has been a little harsh on my wee plants. High wind and heavy rain hasn't been good for my babies.. Today I staked all my tomatoes - they're about to flower and I'd really like to get some fruit!! Oh and I removed a wiggly caterpillar that had made a wee home in a basil plant!

I have two Gnomes, a fairy and a pink plant dragon guarding my little patch... I think its almost time to pick and dry my chillis! I wonder if I should dry them in the sun that's sheduled to come or just keep them in the pantry to dry. They're so teeny and cute for chillis.

These two are SUPER adorable and now getting along beautifully.. They are our second lot of foster kitties. Well on their way to being cat-flu free. One thing for sure is their appetites leave nothing to be desired - and they sure let us know when they're hungry! Leo is a 6 month old boy, boisterousness and lively but loves being around us and playing... Lilly is shy but cute and loves hanging out with her foster brother..

I'm actually getting used to having animals around so I'll be sad to see them go... Lulu our previous foster has been adopted (we're pretty sure) which really didn't take long... its like giving a kid a good reference when it goes out into the bit world.

I'm only just back from Sydney Mardi Gras.. and have had limited access to the internet. Actually it's been great! Unplugging - disconnecting from the internet mini rat race and madness of constant updates and news.

I come back on line and find something I'd love to share with you! Burlesque(or Vintage) fan or not... this is a different side of Katy Perry altogether and athough it looks like it was bought and designed by someone very clever, I LOVE it! Its nice to see a side of her that isn't bubble-gum-pop and a little more grown-up glamorous!

Its really got a new old feel to it, a little Eddie Sedgwick... another of my glamour idols. Who had that bright sparkly exterior and a darker melancholy private life. Maybe Katy's divorce has effected her allot more than she's letting on?

Why does the world love Katy Perry? The conventional wisdom is that if you have to ask the question, then you'll never fully understand the answer although, tens of millions of people do, which is why she is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. But after a titanic and tumultuous year that began with an epic world tour, hit its peak with a run of five No. 1 singles, and ended with her husband of 15 months, comedian Russell Brand, filing for divorce, Perry is now out to prove that she's something else, too: unsinkable..

I'm super lucky in having some super talented friends!! What ever I might lack in creative ability I think I know someone who can create such a thing!! I just got given this GORGEOUS fascinator hat... just in time to take to Sydney with me. Thank you Chris for making this, you're awesome!

Talking about being super spoiled for fabulous costumes... I met with Cathy Tree and discussed a full Burlesque outfit I've commissioned her to make... I can't wait to see it... as normally I only get an occasional piece or two made and match the rest of an entire outfit. Luckily most of my wardrobe is pink then yea?

Kitten Fostering for the SPCA is going very well... too well? Falling in love? Yes a little... This gorgeous wee tabby Lulu came to us shy, scared, thin and full of the flu!! We consequently found out that cats that have the flu can't smell and therefore aren't sure what's food! Queue weight loss... Gently syringe feeding her has worked a TREAT and she's now full of life and purrs like a racehorse!

NZ Fashion Festival Opening Party!

Attending a Fashion event is completely and utterly different from attending an event such as the NZ Music Awards. They are two different kettle of fish! I've attended a NZMA's serveral times before and made a wee fashion statement each time.. I may have worn this one year!

I'm finding Fashion events can be just as fun.. however I sure was nervous before attending the NZ Fashion Festival Opening party... I'm sure when Fashion Week rolls around I'll be more more confident...

I've been Blogging since pre 2007 (MySpace - heh) so its been part of my life for a while now, and I still love it!

I recorded this about 15 times before I was happy with it.. and even then I still think I sound a little squeaky!

Goodbye Auckland, hello Sydney?

I'm off to Sydney in less than a week and I'm starting not to sleep properly with excitement. I've printed a Map of the inner city and marked all the places I want to visit, where I'm staying and the Mardi Gras parade route.. I've tickets sorted for most of the events I want to attend and am watching a twitter feed for second release party tickets to one I've missed. I'm trying to be super organised for the best holiday experience I can - DIFFICULT as this week in Auckland is NZ Fashion Festival and I'm attending a pile of events too!
If you don't currently own a diary - Despite being in the Internet age, get one! Having it all laid out page by page where I'm supposed to be and when helps HEAPS.. My phone calendar acts as more of an alarm system making sure I'm not running late!

BUSINESS CARDS... As a Blogger and Burlesque dancer I have to have these handy all the time. I got these to cute we boxes of cards from MOO.com - in the UK. I have over 100 different photographs, one on each card... You could have 200 cards with an individual image on each if you really wanted! AMAZING right??

My next big hurdle is packing! I'm scared... I have costumes I need to bring, shoes of course, but I want to leave room for shopping! Dresses and new shoes please! I've putting up stuff for sale on the #BloggersClosetRaid as part of First Thursdays on K Rd this last couple of weeks so I can justify adding more things into my wardrobe! Hurrah!

What do I take with me?

FUDGE: These amazing people constantly make sure my hair looks amazing. Supplying me with pink hair dye. Paintbox Raspberry Beret and Pink Moon are my favourite combination. Did you know however that the styling products come in travel size? WOW how amazing! Aeroplanes have that wonderful safety rule about how many mls liquids in your carry on luggage can be and fair enough. With naturally curly hair it can be difficult to keep it smooth and silky if the humidity levels are up. So glad I'll be all sorted this time - Thanks Fudge!

MAKEUP: I have a huge case of the stuff.. I'm really not sure that bringing my entire case is a good use of my 7 or is it 9kg of carry on luggage allowance... let alone having a customs officer rifling through it looking for potential harmful weapons?

THEY'RE JUST TWEEZERS OKAY?!

One more thing to downsize into a Travel friendly bag and add into my suitcase I think? *sigh*

While I'm over in Sydney I'm going to be "Reporting" (loosely) on the Sydney Mardi Gras experience so thank goodness I have a tablet. See picture above (which doesn't actually look like a tablet because it comes with a handy dandy docking station). I will have to look up and see if there's an Android App that highlights all the free WIFI hot spots in Sydney... There's an App that does just the same in Auckland and other major NZ cities too... If you don't have it, I recommend!

I'll have to take my external hard drive (nerd alert) so I can store all the photos I'm planning on taking easily for upload! Keep an eye on this blog for links to photos! You can live vicariously though my amateur photo journalism.

Theatre Review: The Artefact Project

Melissa Fergusson Director and Playwright of the Artefact Project (with her newly formed theatre organisation, ‘charlatan clinic’), really hit the nail on the head with this one.

With The Artefact Project's three short plays, Phobia - Commitment, Pause - Procrastination and Pie - Ageing, she opened up the audience to the social stigma that we are all expected to be in a relationship to be happy!

Ruby - Gina Timberlake (who is cute as a button) and Richard - the smooth Mark Huston bring the play to life beautifully. I wasn't quite sure how many quick changes one could have in such a short period of time! This is a very thought provoking take of a sexual and emotionally tensioned platonic relationship.

“This gives them an ability to speak truth about themselves and their feelings without prejudice” says Fergusson. “It means that through them we can examine the complexities of friendship and ask the question: ‘how do we define boundaries between a man and a woman?’”.

A gorgeous, relaxing evening in the gallery space/hair salon, French Revolver Studio on Victoria Street West, provides a fresh and beautiful, intimate space for a cosy show for the duration of The Artefact Project.

Apartment Balcony Gardening!

I never thought having a garden in an apartment was possible.. I'm not talking about just a few pot plants either... I want one of those "Live of the land" type gardens... very difficult if your living arrangements don't actually contain any actual dirt! All big cities are filled with high rises, and few trees. Its really rewarding and relaxing to be able to have your own bit of greenery.

Basil, Coriander, and Marigolds

Hanging baskets are great. This one is super study and matches the Metal railing on my balcony. They are a wee bit pricey but buy them second hand online if you can. Instant gratification (garden) isn't always the cheapest way to go! They take up WAY more soil than I expected. We ended up with a 40 Litre bag of soil and used up most of it potting everything up. The seedlings come in tightly packed little pottles so the bigger containers need fresh soil for every separated out plant.

Ornametal Chili

Chilli plants are awesome! I think we three on our balcony now. Two hot chillis and one ornamental one. I think they're pretty and colourful. I'll leave all the eating of said chillis to my flatmates.

I can see many chilli concarnes, or Thai Chilli Chicken coming out of our kitchen. Hopefully no idiot will get talked into a chilli eating contest over the weekend either!

Sitting in the afternoon summer sun watering my plants is going to be my new hobby after a cooped up day inside the office. Vitamin D and visiual stimulation. YES please! Plants and greenery have got to be almost as relaxing to potter around with as Animals are. Maybe I'm getting all grown up, suddenly wanting to care for other living things?

Succulents and Basil

Basil - I have HEAPS of this... It grows way taller than I expected. and all those lucious green leaves instantly make me think of PESTO... oooh Pesto, how I long to make my own. Pesto is pretty darn expensive really. I just splurged out on a 550gram pot that was $11!!!! I can't say I'm going to grow my own Pine nuts but I can certainly add in my own leaves in a month or so I hope!

I wanted to buy more Gnomes from the Plant Barn when I was there.. I found a little one with a thermostat, but really it was quite ugly so I'm glad I didn't. I have a couple that are just cropped out of the photo below. But my Pink flamingos are the bees-knees. Nearly got more except they were $35 each! I'm sure mine weren't that much originally! Colour and Green make a balcony garden amazing... The garden tray above is actually PINK. I nearly wet myself when I saw it... Now I just need another to have a matching set. Temptation right?

Garden ornaments!

Instead of continuing to be jealous of my friends luscious and fruitful veggie patches this past weekend I went out and did something about it. I went too my local Kings Plant Barn and came out with a trolley full of green goodies... If this is the first time setting up a garden, I totally recommend taking a green-thumb friend with you. I'm so glad I did otherwise I would have walked out with all the wrong things!!

Myself and Hannah of AychBlog.com have been running a wee project on Ponsonby Radio called the Blogger Babes, where we bring our Blog topics to the radio-waves..

Become an SPCA foster Parent!

This weekend I signed up to become an SPCA Foster Parent! I'm looking forward to posting lots of photos and updates about the various cats and kittens we foster. If you haven't heard about the SPCA foster programme here is some more about it! Its a great cause and I'm very excited about starting this in the next couple of weeks!

Many of the animals that come into the SPCA Auckland Animal Village need a little extra TLC before finding their new forever home. Foster Parents provide a temporary home for these animals as they recover from surgery or illness, or simply put on a little more weight before being desexed.

While each animal is different, the average length of stay is 3 – 5 weeks for cats, and 6 weeks for dogs. Once they are ready, the animals come back to the Animal Village and are put up for adoption.

To be Foster Parent you need to have your own transport so you can pick up the animals and bring them in if they need to visit with the vet. You must have a secure area to keep them safe and contained and away from any pets that you have at home. This could be a spare bedroom, a laundry or bathroom, or a sunroom. Foster cats and kittens must remain indoors at all times.

We understand that looking after an animal can be a big undertaking, and we want to make it as easy as possible. Hills Pet Nutrition is our major sponsor and they generously supply the Hills Science Diet food for animals both here in the Village, and animals that are being fostered.We also supply litter, litter trays, bedding, toys, bowls, and anything that we have on hand to make the animals comfortable while they are staying in your home.

I love having interesting people to talk about. Bloggers, writers, photographers, creatives, geeks and my list could go on and on! I've known Clint for easily 5 or more years and worked with him on many projects. This guy is inspirational, his energy is amazing and passion for the projects he takes on is infectious. If your going to succeed there's nothing better than surrounding yourself with others with the same drive and desire!

What did you do before you started VanguardRed?

Right before VanguardRed I ran a small creative studio called Renegade House in which we made a whole bunch of design, photography and video projects as well as a digital pop culture magazine. But for the last 12 years I've been a photographer and graphic designer primarily in the design industry.

What tips would you give new web-entrepreneurs to help them start out on a path to success?

1. The first thing is to define what success means to you. For some its money, for others it's fame or legacy. So outline your goals clearly and concisely and then figure out your path to get there. This generally means building some kind of framework to work within. It's the equivalent to going grocery shopping without a shopping list; you end up doubling back to what you needed and somehow have a lot of junk food at checkout. So have a plan. Even a loose one will do to begin with.

2. Do your research well. What you will find out when you research extensively is that your awesome idea is already being developed by someone else. It's not exactly like someone else's, but its close. Find out what other people in your field are doing. Find their fuck-ups, learn from them, make your stuff better.

3. Get help. there are many people out there who are willing to help you out so ask for it. You will not get anywhere without pulling a few favors. I make it a point to help everyone who asks for my help and I've always got those favors back.

4. Love failure. get used to it. if you are creative professional failure is your best friend. But it's not a bad thing. its just there to keep you on track like brakes down a curved slope.

5. Have paperwork. Don't start any job or venture without adequate paper work outlining agreements between clients or partners. Paper work is like getting a flu shot, mildly painful but safer in the long run.

When did you discover there was life outside the corporate 9-5 grind? Was there a specific event or epiphany that brought that about?

The thing about corporate 9-5 jobs are that you will always have to report to someone who is responsible for your salary. You play by their rules. Your work is generally uninteresting and the guy you take your orders or 'suggestions' from doesn't really know what they are talking about. But you HAVE to do it or your bills don't get paid. I always knew that there was life outside the corporate grind because there were people out there doing it. I just had to be brave enough to take that step. It's scary when you are out on your own.

I don't think there was a specific event as such but I realized early on that if I worked for myself I could control the amount I worked, choose my clients appropriately, potentially earn more than a base salary and have fun doing it. It's not all awesome however. I've noticed that when you are working for yourself you are constantly hustling. And when you stop, you don't get paid. But I enjoy doing what I do so it doesn't feel like I'm ever overworked.

Have you ever struggled to get what you do taken seriously?

I used to. Mostly because I was young, excited and had big ideas. Sometimes I wouldn't be taken seriously because I'm indian. Not because the people were racist, its just that they considered me an outsider. It takes time for people to understand that outsiders generally have an objective view on things and can change the market completely since they see the flaws from the outside.

Not any more though. I have a very large body of work that spans a lot of creative fields. I can also articulate my ideas more clearly now that I understand the NZ creative culture. I choose to believe I personally don't matter, the work should speak for itself.

A lot of what you both do is very technical – is this something you’ve learned in an education system?

I think true mastery of anything technical comes from spending hours at it. The education system is exactly that, a system. And the problem with systems is that they take time to get updated. I love the safety net of an education system where you can experiment and get critiques etc. But the real world is a beast of it's own. There's nothing to prepare you for it besides hard work, discipline and acceptance of failure.

You are not afraid to voice an opinion in the public media. What effect has that had on the way that you work and do you think you’re making a difference?
Yeah, its inevitable to make enemies when you stand for what you believe in. It's the nature of the game. You can't change anything if all your are doing is pleasing people. You become a YES man. Everyones got a choice to either be a sheep or a shepherd. I chose to be the landowner. I didn't like the magazine publishing culture here in NZ and I just started my own one. I hate complaining and dislike people who complain. I'd rather come up with a solution than harp on about the problem.

It's too soon to tell if it's made any relevant change but I don't really care. I enjoy my life the way it is and I choose to live it that way.

What is the biggest, most exciting project you’ve worked on / are most proud of?

I've got to say that VanguardRed is the most excited I've been about any project. It's going to be full of inspiring multimedia content and awesome interactivity. Also, it's giving the younger generation of creatives a chance to get their work seen in the market. I also have a great team of professionals I'm working with so it all feels great.

Have you got anything exciting in the pipeline that you could share with us?

Valentines - for or against?

I'm divided on the concept of Valentines day. To me is a huge commercialised excuse to celebrate love. Its cheesy excuse for flowers chocolate and fancy dinners. There is so much social stigma around having a "special someone" to spend the day with... What if you've chosen to be independent ? Here's a humerus take on both sides of the "Heart" so to speak! The Gossip has to be one of my top 5 favourite Bands!! I started out doing Burlesque shows to Dimestore Diamond and if there was anyone to be an inspirational and successful Body Positive icon - Beth is it!

I love M.A.C. cosmetics so this news of a collaboration between them and one of my favourite artists is bigger than the remake of the Muppet's!! (Miss Piggy would hate me for saying that!)

I can't wait to see the collection - I love these bright colours already!

The Dragon personality The Dragon is a creature of myth and legend. A symbol of good fortune and sign of intense power, the Oriental Dragon is regarded as a divine beast - the reverse of the malicious monster that Westerners felt necessary to find and slay. In Eastern philosophy, the Dragon is said to be a deliverer of good fortune and a master of authority. Therefore, those people born in Dragon years are to be honoured and respected.

The last Year of the Dragon, which occurred in 2000, was fraught with fear. There was a lot of hand wringing about the collapse of our technological world, the Y2K bug and other millennial prophecies that turned out to be more hype than bite.

The Year of the Dragon is again just around the corner and fear and trepidation are once more an issue. This time it’s the Mayan Calendar and the alleged 2012 Armageddon prophecy. Is the Chinese Year of the Dragon, which comes around every 12 years, truly something to be feared?

So far 2012 has been great to me... I'm not hugely superstitious but this Jan/Feb has been much kinder to me than last year! I was unhappy, and newly single early 2011 and not really doing many creative projects. Now I'm bordering on exploding with excitement with everything I want to try and do this year!

What's new around town??

What's new? Well allot. Two long weekends in a row equals very spoiled Aucklanders! Auckland Anniversary weekend meant Seafood festival and Carnivals and for me the Dresden Dolls concert at the Powerstation. If you want to see what else is on around town that you might not have heard of check Here as Cleo is a brilliant Events girl!

I really feel like I must have been a hermit all Winter because it feels so nice to be out and about now that its warmed up and there's so much happening! (I totally couldn't be come a hermit, so lets say -in comparison..!) We are so lucky to have so much going on for such a small country. Wellington has even had out door movies in the Botanical gardens! That's just the thing to make me jealous!

I adventured down to the waterfront area last weekend.. Waterfront now is SUCH a much bigger area. All the events centers really have one into their own just at the right time of year! Though I cant wait to see something in the "Cloud". From Wynyard Quarters delicious range of top of the line eateries to Queens Warf and down towards the end of Beach road. As some of you may have guessed, I'm such a big kid at heart that when I heard there was a Carnival on I got super excited. It totally brings back memories of childhood travelling circuses! I even got on their scream ride, and duly screamed involuntarily realizing only once I got on that it was a lot higher up and, yes I'm still scared of heights! (Not hugely so but its one of my missions this year to overcome the irrational!!)

My girlfriend went to the Ninja gig they did at the Auckland City Library and got an electronic autograph Squee!

The Dresden Dolls were the best!! Its been almost a year since I went to a gig, and I think the last one I went to was Jack Johnson/ Tegan and Sara. Anyway that one was at the Vector Arena, which is amazing for that overwhelming "BIG" feel. The Dresden Dolls were at the Powerstation. Close enough to walk to from my little CBD apartment which is FAB! I love interactive, audience participatory events and this was just that! Richard O'Brien cameo'd!! Hows that for AMAZING. We time-warped as loud as we could till our lungs hurt from singing out loud.

My group of friends were all on the Powerstations upper balcony which was fortuitous - 3+ hour concert makes for sore feet at the end of it. So thankfully I wore my Doc Martins in "Amanda Palmer" esque style (imo) cos if I'd worn heels I doubt my feet would have lasted that long! The covers they did were amazing and she played my favorite song (which I've done a 'Boylesque' routine to recently) Coin Operated Boy!!

I love going to events and running into HEAPS of people I know - its a sign of a great event. OOh if your doing something big without a record label - the way the Dresden Dolls did it was such a great idea. Give out a phone number mid concert and get the entire audience to txt in their email addresses!! Do I dare publish a phone number??

This weekend is the End of a new Beginning! Chinese New Year. What better way to celebrate than with fireworks and the Lantern festival!! I've been religiously for the last few years, this one won't be any different!

If your a CBD dweller like me or come into Karangahape Road occasionally for a shopping trip you have to stop into Cosmic Corner. I love this shop a popped in today and couldn't help but take photos! Gosh, I want a Diana or Hipsamatic Camera.

And today I was writing outside in the sun! Ahhhh blogger life BLISS! A smoked fish and caper bruschetta from Coco's Cantina. Delicious! Perfect for writing away.. as you can see here!
