Sewing leather on my machine SERIES

In a series of videos available on my Youtube channel, MissPrettypPerfect Sewing Studio, I teach the basics on Sewing Leather on a sewing machine. The series of (5) short videos, features the very basic understanding of leathers, and what type of machine(s) can be used to be successful in sewing leather.

As a Handbag Designer, my main material of choice is leather. I was taught how to sew leather on a "walking foot" industrial machine.

For the last 10 years of me sewing my own line of handbags, the necessary tools have not always been available to me. I have always owned a commercial "home" sewing machine, and that has very much served my leather sewing needs, well. But, I realized that it wasn't the best, and most obvious choice for me, to continue sewing leather bags. When I acquired my own straight stitch industrial sewing machine, I thought that would be the answer. Although, it has the "horse-power", being able to stitch through multiple layers and heavy weight materials, it was a learning curve.

Ultimately, the answer to all my frustrations with sewing leather, was my industrial walking foot machine. It could handle any weight of leather I put before it!

Leopard Print Leather Applique Clutch

Once upon a time, I won an art award in the 4th grade, for a paper hand-cut (and glued) portrait of myself. It's clear to me, many, many moons later, that this was my destiny. Today, instead of using paper, I use leather. And, I Love it. I'm not sure if I'll get rich from this passion, but, I do know that my heart is happy. So far, I've only made two of these cute leather applique clutch bags. The first design looks like a monarch butterfly, with gold studding and beautiful fringe. The most recent version is my interpretation of leopard prints, with additional hand knotted leather fringe.

The inspiration began with (2) brown leather hides, and some leopard print fabric.

After sketching the leopard pattern, I hand-cut them out of both leathers, and started to sew them down to the cream background.

Add holes for the fringe to pass through..

When it was time to add the fringe, I was stumped. That's

when I began a poll for friends to help me decide..

As you can see, #1 was the people's choice!

Melania Trump's Inauguration Suit in a Doll Sized Version

To be able to create patterns and make them available for sale, in a digital PDF format, was a dream for me, until this happened! It was the day after I went all google-eyed over Melania Trump's inauguration day suit. Upon research, I discovered that it was designed by Ralph Lauren. It's a blue double faced cashmere material, that looked so luscious! It was a challenge that I thought would not be that difficult, if only I could get started on it. So, I commenced to designing that same outfit for an 18 inch American girl doll. I have to admit that there was a special force, who assisted me throughout the process. Not to mention, the years spent in Fashion design classes! And, not only did I create a PDF pattern for this suit, I also self filmed and edited a video tutorial for a beginner sewest. What a rewarding time, it was!

How To Sew Leather Zipper Wallet On A Home Sewing Machine Tutorial

When I received the invitation to record another video tutorial (with an actual film crew), I was over the moon excited! I have always, only filmed my own videos, so this was a big opportunity for me. I have had an idea for a couple of years now, to conquer the myths that surround whether, or not, you can sew leather on a commercial home sewing machine. Based on my experience of making my own line of leather handbags, called "MissPrettyPerfect", this was something I had to learn to do without having the luxury of owning a walking foot industrial machine. Today, I am able to compare the differences because of my background in hangbag design, when I actually worked for a Handbag Designer in New York City and operated an industrial walking foot machine, while at work.

When I moved back home to North Carolina, I had to make the switch from using an actual industrial strength machine made for leather, to using my commercial home sewing machine. I noticed that my own industrial (non-walking foot) machine, would not properly sew two or more pieces together. The improper manner that I refer to, had to do with the top leather piece "sliding", creating a bunching effect in the seam, using my regular sewing foot. I didn't like that and I could not sell anything that looked that way. Most times, if threw my design off, completely. After a bit of research, I learned about a Teflon foot. It's the white plastic piece on a foot hinge that allows you to "glide" over the material. A Teflon foot is usually recommended for sewing vinyl. I really didn't particularly care for this, either. My last hope was to fight with my industrial, in order to sew leather. This made me begin to hate sewing leather, because of the time and effort spent toward sewing/ resewing, removing seams and puncturing my nice leathers with needle holes that would turn out to be visible in the handbag. That's a 'no-no". And, you never want to make more needle holes than necessary in leather, because you basically start to create a perforated line, causing the leather to tear.

After many unsuccessful attempt of using my non-walking foot industrial machine to sew leather, I tried my home sewing machine. I realized that if I could not afford to purchase an industrial strength walking foot machine, I could order an actual 'walking foot' for my commercial machine. This "new" operation changed my life forever. With this walking foot device, combined with the proper needle (size 16/18), I was able to breeze right through most of my projects!

Aluminum Foil Fashions Window Display

It's amazing what you can do, with very little time.. with aluminum foil! Here is my Project Runway themed Foil Fashion Window Display!

I was fortunate to have a position that allowed for total creativity in visual displays. Yes, it was always with the lastest fashions, but this time was very different. The idea was to capture attention (it always is) for a Winter clearance sale for Fifi's Fine Resale. The store owner placed the foil in my hands, and I did what I was born to do. I knew I had to "Make it work", without Tim Gunn over my shoulder. You know that saying can take you a looong way when you know it's your time to shine.

To call it a "Disco Ball" is so faux pas to me. So I would like for this magnificent piece to be referred to as a structure of sorts. It was definitely used for entertainment purposes, that's for sure. Who knows what room or hall's guest this pieces has gracefully charmed? Carefully placed, hand-bead silver paillettes, all on a 75" round diameter.

There are really no words to describe this, but It is so Old Hollywood Glamour.

Mystery Tribal Print Dress on Fashion Hunters

After my very first ever viewing of "Fashion Hunters" on Bravo last night, I knew I would not be complete unless I personally solved the problem of the mystery tribal print dress that was (almost) featured in the episode "Mystery Dresses". Allow me to set the scene..

A young lady walks into a High-end New York City consignment shop, hoping to consign her "designer" dresses in return for some high-end money. Well, like any consignment shop seeking designer duds, one must be able to verify that it is, in fact, legitimately designer labeled merchandise. Unfortunately, the potential consignee was unable to prove that her dresses were made by who she swore by. Without proof (by label) of the Designer goods, the consignment shop would not be able to convince a potential buyer that the dress was in fact, an Oscar De La Renta or Carolina Herra (both names were dropped repeatedly by the consignee).

Question: Would you buy a "Designer" item without the label? I dont' think so.

So, they offered to have the dresses in question, authenticated by a Celebrity Fashion Stylist, to see if they were "real" goods or not. There was one dress in particular that stood out to me because of the Tribal craze going on now and the very abstract print alone. I have worked with similar and immediately recognized it as a past Designer dress that was featured in one of my industry magazines a couple years back. Low and behold, after a little research this morning, I found who it was made by and when. And can you believe it?.. it is in fact an Oscar De La Renta dress from his Spring 2008, Ready-To-Wear line! Now, whether the consignee's dress is real or not, the world may never know. Personally, (having lived in NYC, studied Fashion and worked in the heart of the garment district), I feel that it was probably a Sample cut. A Sample is made for many reasons other than being sold, so no label is necessary. And if you're business savvy, you know why. So it cannot be resold.

I believe the dress on the right was the one featured on the show.. well, almost featured.

Case closed!

Furthermore, I have been an admire of this woven print way before Mr. Oscar's runway debut of it. I grew up admiring African Mudcloth as a child. When it was featured in Oscar De La Renta's collection (and others), I was immediately hooked. When I was finally able to acquire and work with this sought after textile myself, I knew it would make a beautiful handbag.. or two.

We all make mistakes, right?

Well, I don't know about you, but my mistakes are never intentional. I've had more than a few handbag errors in MissPrettyPerfect's history of designing and making handbags. But I have never had the opportunity to introduce the handbag to the public because of minor flaws that occurred during construction. Sometimes it's more work to take it apart than it is to complete it. Recently, my concerns of hanging on to a fully functional handbag with flaws were addressed in the Etsy Forums. I was encourage by some fellow Etsy sellers to open an "Oops" category. What a great idea!

I have so many unfinished projects that I had great intentions on finishing, but perhaps had a change of heart. And this happens most of the time to me.

I can't describe all of the logistics as to how this will happen yet, but I'm open to suggestions on how this should be handled. The project can be acquired in many ways, by trade, sell, or just given away.
