Gearing up for NYFW

It's certainly no secret that I *love* fashion week (#NYFW). The clothing, backstage hair and makeup, runway shows, it's an AMAZING time to see the newest trends while doing some sick street style spotting. Editors, models, and bloggers are running wild across the city and I can't wait to capture it all :)

One thing to look forward to are all of the launches, specifically Rock & Republic for Kohl's. For a brief moment in my life, I was obsessed (!) with Rock & Republic and now the line is going to be launching only at Kohl's. I can't wait to see how the line has evolved. To kick it off, Kohl's and Rock & Republic are giving you the chance to attend fashion week. To celebrate the launch, they'll be hosting a fashion show (I'll be there!) and are giving you (yes, YOU!) the chance to be there within the throngs of the fashion set. Take It Off with NARS Makeup Removing Water

When it comes to makeup removers, I'm a dedicated lover of this guy. But seeing as it's only eye makeup remover, I've been known to douse my cotton ball and rub it across my face (#dontjudge).

Now I don't have to. NARS allows me to take it all off (cue Ke$ha) with their new Makeup Removing Water ($28). Where some makeup removers leave my skin feeling greasey, this one is effective in removing makeup without leaving any residue.

The great news is that it's soap-free, oil-free, and alcohol-free and removes makeup without excessive rubbing. Hoorah! If you wear a LOT of makeup, you may go through several cotton pads at which point you're best washing it off instead. Infused with cucumber, chamomile, and hyaluronic acid I find it a pretty great way to lazily take everything off at night.

This year I, like most red-blooded Americans, resolved to go to the gym (though for me it was more of a fitness thing than losing weight). I feel like the process of getting ready for this newfound love of fitness was WAY better than the actual gym experience. I have no problem shopping for workout gear (heyyy Lululemon and Lady Foot Locker!) but the actual work out process doesn't jive well. One Tuesday evening Zumba class later, my hair went from fabulously straight to uber 'fro and massive curl. Not the look I was going for in the new year. It was something out of a horror show as I mercilessly tried to tame my hair in the women's locker room.

a peek at NARS Spring 2012

Spring makeup releases make me happy. Perhaps it's the bright *POPS* of color amidst the dreary wintery days but something about seeing a hot pink lipstick or purple nail lacquer really gets me going. It's provocative*, y'know. For spring 2012, NARS is releasing a nine piece collection filled with vivid hues and power packed with pigments.

The Spring 2012 Collection is a study in contrasts: Bold color underscored by sophisticated shimmer. Eyes glisten in muted tones of lavender and pink, or shimmer in bronze shades accented with rich navy. Cheeks are flushed with candy pink. Lips gleam in topaz or pop with berry. Metallic violet nails add the finishing touch to a collection that’s bright, strong and iconic.

FRICTION – Noun – 1. The electromagnetic force between charged particles. 2. The rubbing of one body against that of another. 3. Converts kinetic energy into thermal energy/heat.

when I received a sample of fcuk's latest perfume, "friction," I didn't know what to expect. I know that the brand is about shock and sex appeal so I was anticipating something heavy, musky and sensual. What I got was a gourmand so lush I've been carrying it in my purse for the past month.

The scent opens up with lush top notes of pink honeysuckle, apple blossom and red berries than quickly transforms into a creamy coconut. In addition to coconut (a note I never really experienced before) there's vanilla absolute, which warms up the scent a bit. It's this warm and soothing heart that reels me in. It's yummy and preps you for the dry down of -- wait for it -- white vetiver, sandalwood, amber, and musk. If you know anything about me, you'll know of my love of vetiver (done right). This scent lasts all day and I love wearing it when it's cold out (I love wearing it with a turtleneck so I can nuzzle in and catch a whiff throughout the day).

2011 End of Year Report

Remember back in January when I was talking all that jazz about being financially responsible and no more frivolous spending; paying off credit cards and taking matters into my own hands? No? Me neither.

Just kidding! Go ahead and refresh your memory here. I had laid out three "simple" financial goals that I wanted to accomplish by the end of 2011. I'm quite convinced that finance will never be my best friend. I've already come to the point where I've realized shopping is my drug. It literally gets me high. The thrill of a new purchase -- the outfits! the dinners! the outfit photos! -- is unparalleled. But now that it's been a year, was I just all talk and no game? Let's find out.

1) Free myself of any credit card and frivolous debts.
While I wanted to pay off ALL of my credit cards (there's a lot of 'em friends), I didn't 100% succeed. I DID paid off a few and am in the process of paying the remainder, so I should be on track for 2012. What I didn't take into consideration was life - helping my mother pay rent, cable, phone on top of my transportation, Sallie Mae, food and, yes, my shopping habit. The problem: I wasn't realistic. I assumed I can Wonder Woman my way through my debt without being honest with myself. BUT all is not lost. If I stay on track with the "budget" (using the term loosely here, guys) I created, I'll be done in no time. It just took me longer than I anticipated.

2) Skip the cheap guys and purchase mainly investment pieces.
I'm going to go ahead and call this one a success. Yes, I shop to my hearts content much to the chagrin of my bank account BUT those frequent trips to Forever 21 has become MUCH less frequent. I hardly go into Forever 21 for my clothing, choosing instead to go to Zara, J. Crew, H&M (still kind of crappy but not as craptastic as F21). Now don't get me wrong, I still walk in from time to time in search of good deals on costume jewelry but the biggest difference in my wardrobe has been the quality. Now I'm not shopping because my clothing has teared, shrunk or stretched out due to horrible material. After taking a good look at my closet, I'd much rather save up and spend my money at Zara where the clothes not only LOOK better but last me from one season to the next. Now if only I can make those visits less frequent, ha!

3) Stick to budget.
I failed miserably. The concept of budgeting is mind-boggling! How does one stay within a limit? What about emergencies? What about that YSL lipstick? Now, just because I didn't create/ stick to a realistic budget doesn't mean I didn't save. No, sir. I may spend but I'm also putting that savings account to good use. I just had to get creative with how I saved my money (mind games, removing my savings account from my debit card, etc.). Also, if you're anything like me and tend to dip into your savings account, I suggest you open up a CD (certificate of deposit). Interest rates are shit but I'm not focusing on that. With a CD, you can't touch the money for a dedicated period of time or you'll get charged a penalty fee. Having worked at a bank for 4.5 years, I can personally attest to the fact that these fees are harsh and merciless. Check your local bank for options.

My credit is in a much better place than it was end of last / earlier this year but I can do better. As I take a deep dive into what I want for 2012, I'm going to look back at my successes and failures to get a sense of what is truly achievable. There will always be student loans and I will slip up and go on a binge shopping spree. It's how I manage these and rise above that will really count. That's why I named that post "Goals for 2011 and Beyond" -- everything takes time.

And that Mulberry I spoke about? It turned into an Alexander Wang that I bought for myself (plus it was cheaper than the Alexa!)

Daphne Guinness for M∙A∙C

Here's a fun story to tell the grandkids: I once blocked Daphne Guinness in the elevator at Bergdorf's. I was with a friend who, instead of pulling me out of the way, stood there giving me these crazy eyes, which I was to decipher as "GET THE HELL OUT THE WAY WOMAN!" I was never good at charades. It wasn't until I got out of the elevator, looked to my left and saw the ensemble mixed with the hair that I realized I was blocking greatness.

To this day, I refuse to wear that turquoise H&M jacket worn that evening- y'know, just in case Daphne herself was walking down NYC and saw me in it and thought "there goes that trick who blocked my path." This is how my mind operates.

When I found out M∙A∙C was collaborating with Guinness, all sorts of color combinations came to mind. Pale pinks, maybe a white shadow with a sliver of black running through it, THE WORKS! The actual result is a wearable 24-piece collection that, according to Guinness, is “a window into my imagination.”

You might remember the blush ombre pictured above (Azalea Blossom) as it's a repromote from M∙A∙C's Spring Colour Forecast collection. It's a cool toned pink that applies easily without making my pores look large. When applying, I use a fluffy blush brush and swirl around the pan- catching both the pink and purple - to apply. The effect is a slightly plum, not frosty pink. As it's limited edition - yet again - I recommend grabbing this (or the other blush ombre) since it's more wearable than you think.

livin' my life like it's golden (golden)

another year older, another year wiser (so they say). I waited the latest possible moment to post this as I wanted to enjoy every bit of today as possible. I celebrated my 24^th birthday on December 24^th, which means it's my Golden birthday. I started with brunch and ended with shopping with a friend whose friendship seems to only be getting stronger. It's funny how people end up in (or out) of your life. This last week has taught me a lot in terms of how I value my friends, letting go, and giving in.

Crew pave of 2010 and my new Coach boots that I've worn everyday since I was sent them.

shop brooklyn: cobble hill

If there's one thing you should know about me is that I'm a hardcore Brooklynite. By day, I work in the city* but nothing makes me happier than crossing that bridge at the end of the night to go home.

One of my favorite sections of Brooklyn (if not my favorite of all time) is definitely Cobble Hill. I was first introduced freshman year of college where I took a job as a sales associate at the new Lucky Brand Jeans. It's such a quaint little area with friendly people and an amazing restaurant scene. I so desperately want to move there (rent -- eek!) but make the most of it by shopping the smaller, local stores. The biggest difference between shopping in the city and in cobble hill are a) the crowds (or lack thereof in BK), and b) the level of service you receive. I've never been one of those "shop small! shop local!" types but I find myself gravitating to these places -- especially everywhere you turn there's someone else wearing *your* Zara skirt.

Shen Beauty

I'll never forget when Shen opened up in Brooklyn late last year. As a complete beauty enthusiast, I make it a point to stalk the newest boutiques and openings and this was no exception. The disappointing thing about Brooklyn is the lack of beauty focused stores. It takes me an hour train ride to the city for me to get my hands on non-drugstore beauty products (which then forces me to stay and shop some more as a means to validate my one hour excursion). Shen is a tranquil and zen boutique where you don't have to worry about a "makeup artist" trying to shove just anything in your face.

The store carries facial creams and oils, makeup, and tons of exclusive beauty products (I've seen a lot from our friends across the pond). It's also a mecca for those seeking organic skincare + products. Think Bobbi Brown and Lipstick Queen but also Lubatti, Kate Logan and Amanda Lacey. If you're a fan of luxury and niche brands, give Shen a visit.

Pink Pepper

In all honesty, I only stopped in Pink Pepper because of the pink and white decor (I'm a sucker for the color pink - it's sickening). Plus with a name like Pink Pepper, who wouldn't want a visit? The first thing I noticed was the amount of Rebecca Minkoff products they carried! I'm a diehard RM fan and to discover a location that carried her products was a total win for me.

Pink Pepper carries an assortment of clothing from casual wear, denim, handbags, shoes, jewelry and so much more. It's a small space but the sales associates are super friendly so don't be surprised if you find yourself chatting with one for five minutes longer than you intended to. I'd consider this a go-to boutique to find labels that you love to shop but have been limited to getting online (in addition to Rebecca Minkoff, I spied House of Harlow 1960 and Ambre-Babzoe).

Dear Fieldbinder

Stepping into Lara Fieldbinder's Smith Street shop is like walking through the closet of the cool girl next door. There's everything from delicious Delirium & Co candles, kickass RGB nail polishes and clothing from Lauren Moffatt, J Brand and more.

This place is for the girl who wear black beanies and chunky, oversized grey sweaters. That said however, I'm not intimidated to walk right in and pick up a few cozy (but pricey) pieces. Namely these pair of Jeffrey Campbell booties seen at the window.

It's edgy without trying, girly without vomiting glitter, and modern (no available cliche here). Not to mention they have a pretty sick Tumblr which gives you a peek into the DF lifestyle.

Bird
According to its website, Bird is "the very first LEED-certified retail store in New York City." Walking in, I was instantly reminded of Aveda salons where everything smells unbelievably amazing and not like chemicals.

With three locations in Brooklyn (in addition to Cobble Hill, Bird is located in Park Slope and Williamsburg), Bird sells womenwear from a few of the top designers including, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Acne, Alexander Wang (we all know how I feel about A dubs), and Isabel Marant to name a few. Walking in a day before my birthday wasn't wise since I was tempted to splurge on this comme des garcon wallet but I was able to resist and got this instead.

It's funny how sometimes the best things are in your own backyard!

I'm probably the worst person to give gifts. I never know what to give and I eventually just start picking from my stash of beauty products. the one thing about giving beauty items as gifts is that it has never failed me. everyone LOVES getting beauty products for free so why not?!

operation: control the breakouts

to say I've been bad when it comes to skincare lately would be the understatement of the century. laziness took over me and I've been sleeping with makeup on, using soap (yes, body bar soap) instead of my usual cleansers and when I DO make an effort, it's a half-assed attempt with a swipe of a makeup wipe. random breakouts all along my cheeks, a dull look, dark circles and puffy eyes -- it's not fun! I've gotten the picture and below are what I'm using to turn it around:

it's no secret I love my Clarisonic Mia. rather than replace my brush head, I spent the last few months convinced I could maintain great skin without it. I was mainly being cheap (c'mon Eileen, it's $25!) and yes, I've paid for it with a ruddy complexion. the clarisonic mia gently massages away impurities - dirt, makeup, etc. - trapped within pores. I'm quite sure I heard my skin sigh "AHHH!!!" when I finally bought new brush heads and used it recently.

dr. jart+ is a korean beauty brand that recently made its way stateside with their uber popular BB cream. while I may be too dark to use the bb cream, I am certainly benefiting from their skincare. since they're a client at my agency, I got a sneak peek at the full product line - and quick pinched a tube for myself. shhhh!! the v7 cleansing foam contains seven vitamins to neutralize free radicals and thoroughly removes all stubborn makeup (even my liquid liner) without irritating or drying out my face. I've fallen in love and can't wait until this (eventually) makes its way into sephora.

lately, I've been on an argan oil kick and after receiving sephora's VIB discount a few weeks back, I dove right in and bought Josie Maran's Organic Argan Oil. I've heard nothing but rave reviews about this 100% pure argan oil and I can't wait to see how my skin improves. I've been using it for about a week now and have only noticed how soft my skin feels. at night, I use it alone since it's super lightweight and doesn't feel like my skin is suffocating. during the day, I layer it underneath my moisturizer (currently sebamed moisturizing day cream but I may switch to something heavier due to the cold).

I've already spoken about sk-II skin signature eye cream so I won't go into much detail (read my review here) but I will say that a) I'm still in love with this cream, and b) it definitely helps in terms of managing dry under eye areas.

lastly comes freeman feeling beautiful facial detoxifying mask, chocolate & strawberry -- which I should have listed first since I put on the mask, chill for about ten minutes THEN go into my clarisonic. when I first applied it, my face did itch a bit so I was afraid I might have a reaction (but, thankfully, I didn't). my favorite part was the gentle chocolate scent, it was so hard keeping the mas on without wanting to run to the store for some chocolate candies! this contains strawberry extract which helps tone skin and shrinks large pores. my face didn't feel super tight or dry after washing it off which is great since nothing's worse than that.

game. set. match. bring it on breakouts.

all sequins, all the time

Recently, I was gifted a Sears gift card to shop from the retailer's many brands (ahem Kardashian Kollection and UK Style by French Connection to name a few) to shop for the perfect look at a great price. I went in a woman on a mission. Ever since I saw pics of Kimmie K on "Dancing with the Stars" rooting on her younger bro, I've been thinking of her blazer that was bedazzled in sequins but looked completely appropriate. HOW?! I wondered. I've always deemed it impossible to not look like a blazing disco ball but hey if my one third of my spirit animals can do it, I can too (uh, the Kardashian sisters are my sartorial spirit animals okay!?!).

ta da!

I marched into Sears a determined woman and came out victorious -- say hello to my Kardashian Kollection Sequined Waterfall Stretch Jacket ($58!). There were so many items available (like this and this) that I nearly lost my mind. All under $100. #winning

What surprised me most about the kollection (see what I did there) was the quality of the klothing. It isn't flimsy or cheap and I can see it lasting in my kloset (can't help it) for longer than the holiday season.

If you are shopping on a budget this season, Sears IS known for its affordability and I recommend you shop online (trust me on this one).

Krigler Jazzy Riviera ²10 for Men and Women

Twenty-four hours into wearing this fragrance and I knew it was something I must own. I received a sample (similar to the mini tubes you get at Sephora) and what I was left with was a yearning for more. It was an intense and instantaneous love affair that led to a Google search that lasted well into two in the morning (on a work night!)

I'd never heard of Krigler fragrances before and I blame it on my limited ability to scour the world of niche perfumery. I've searched countless perfume sites but there's this air of mystery as not many have heard or reviewed the brand.

Jazzy Riviera ²10 is a unisex fragrance that marked the 100th anniversary of the opening of Krigler's Haute Perfumery Atelier in Cap d'Antibes. Albert Krigler was inspired by socialites including Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and Dorothy Parker.

Jazzy Riviera ²10 opens up with clean citrus notes of bergamot and lemon, moving elegantly along to coriander and crisp sweet Freesia. While you may be thinking this is a too sweet or clean scent the base notes musk, patchouli and vetiver come along and sweeps you off your feet. Such a deep and woody base isn't for everyone but I think we've established by now that I'd bathe in it if possible. While I've tried to use my sample sparingly, I couldn't help but dab it on everyday. It makes me feel sexy and womanly -- the type of scent I'd want to wear while wrapped in the arms of a lover.

That said, it doesn't come cheap, starting at $215 for 1.7fl.oz. and $305 for 3.4fl.oz. Jazzy Riviera ²10 is available at Krigler boutiques and www.krigler.com

Lolita Lempicka Si Lolita Eau de Toilette

Having seen Lolita Lempicka around the fragrance block, I'm actually surprised that I've never been tempted (enough) to dive head first. For me, Lolita Lempicka has always been a bit feminine and when it comes to scents, I don't err on the side of girly. I like 'em bold and with a dash of personality. Looks like I judged a bit too soon considering how smitten I am with Si Lolita Eau de Toilette ($90).

This is what's known as a spicy floral and what's most notable about the scent, in my opinion, is the obvious top note of pepper. It's the softer, female version of Marc Jacobs' BANG.

While the pepper remains throughout the scent, it transitions into a bouquet of sweet pea and orange. As you're taken throughout the journey, you'll notice that it warms up and the amber and musk come through -- leaving you with a velvety soft fragrance. It's an alluring scent that may take a bit of getting used to (especially if you've never dabbled in fragrances with peppercorn). I wear it sparingly yet love to show off the clover shaped bottle on my makeshift vanity.

lip service

Lately I've been harassing everyone within earshot with the details of my new-found winter lip regimen. While I will always don a bold lip, it is my goal to not have chapped, feathered, peeling lips. Gross! Your lipstick is only as good as the condition of your lips, and honey NO ONE wants to see them in a state of disaster. One of the things I struggle with every winter is chapped lips (ever since I was young, really). I stockpile on lip balms and glosses promising me smoother lips and all have failed until now.

For the past year, I witnessed a coworker slather on Aquaphor Healing Ointment like it was going out of style. What is this tiny tube she kept at her desk? I thought it was only an addiction until I noticed ANOTHER coworker with it at her desk as well. It wasn't until I used theirs in a moment of "holy hell how did I forget my lip balm" hell I realized its greatness. Aquaphor contains petrolatum (a byproduct of petroleum) which is what the brand calls a "semi occlusive barrier," meaning it allows the flow of oxygen and water on the skin (petroleum is water resistant and can feel heavy while on). I've been using it as my lip balm exclusively for the past two weeks and have already seen a change in the condition of my lips. For starters, it's not chapped or dry. Rarely do I feel the need to constantly reapply and lipstick (even my most matte) goes on smoothly. I'm definitely hoarding this (especially considering I've bought two tubes as backup this week).

Before I hopped on the Aquaphor bandwagon, I was using Maybelline's new Baby Lips Lip Balm in Quenched, a clear unscented lip balm housed in an adorable blue case with purple bubbly letters. Not going to lie, this reminded me of the Smackers lip balms I hoarded in my youth. While the Baby Lips line consists of four tinted shades and two clear, Quenched is by far my favorite because it doesn't interfere with my lipcolor. According to Maybelline, this lip balm can improve the condition of your lips after four weeks. While I can't say I saw a drastic improvement, my lips were a lot less flaky and dry. Bonus perk: it contains SPF 20 (totally necessary even if it isn't summer).

Lastly, I go on to Kiehl's Lip Balm #1. Sweet, dear Kiehl's. I remember a time (four months ago) when I bought this in bulk and in various forms. Tubes, jar, scented -- totally didn't matter! The best, in my opinion, is the one jar form available at Bloomingdales. While I typically hate jars for lip products, I don't quite like how the tip of Kiehl's tubes look (it isn't angled and has a flat tip making it awkward to apply). Kiehl's Lip Balm #1 is made with emollients like lanolin and sweet almond oil plus has Vitamins A and E to protect against harsh weather conditions.

Honorable mention:
-- Rosebud Salve - while some people hate this with a passion, I love it from time to time. The only thing stopping me from using it on a daily basis: the darn tin often gets shut super tight and when you open - BAM! Your fingers land in a tin of greasy balm. At least that's happened to me several times ;)
-- Boots Original Beauty Formula Lip Salve: First of all this jar is massive. It lasts FOREVER and works wonders. I don't have anything negative to say about it but at the same time it's not life altering. It's simply a great salve to have in your arsenal (especially in the dead of winter) since I apply it on my elbows and heels (multipurpose!).

in which I become a Kardashian (or something like that)

When I was contacted to participate in a photo shoot for searsStyle, featuring a few pieces from the Kardashian Kollection, it was ALL SYSTEMS GO! If you follow me on Twitter, you'll know that ~~I'm partially obsessed with~~ I like the Kardashian girls for no reason other than their sense of style and immaculate makeup (and, yes, I find them mildly entertaining and hilarious).

The day began early and I was almost instantly transported to hair and makeup where my theme for the day was "bohemian" (I like to think the word "chic" was thrown around but that could have been in my head). Surprisingly the makeup artist (Nam Vo) didn't use any foundation on me, just a bit of concealer and powder to combat shine (great skincare counts!). Continuing on the bohemian look hairstylist Stacey Ciceron created loose curls with a large barrel curling iron and a bit (okay, a lot) of hairspray all over my head than pinned the look to the side. Truly an easy look and I'm actually looking forward to recreating this look for the upcoming holidays.

After the hair and makeup transformation, it was time for me to strut my stuff in some Kardashian Kollection (as well as UK Style by French Connection and Bongo -- all carried at Sears). I also had a chance to chat with a few Sears execs and it's interesting to see the evolution of the brand now that they're carrying a new brands as well as fashion forward accessories.
