NYFW: Backstage Beauty at Alexander Wang Fall/Winter 2012

When it comes to beauty, the Alexander Wang girl relies on a certain understated beauty. She's non-fussy, yet neat. She keeps it simple, "downtown," and is borderline tomboyish. The look was, as described by makeup artist Diane Kendal, “the sculpted Alex Wang girl...tough chick"

Kendal, on behalf of M·A·C Cosmetics, began by applying Mineralize Charged Water Moisture Gel on the models to hydrate and prep skin for the makeup to come. Next she applied Pro Conceal and Correct Palette in Light* where needed, keeping skin looking "beautifully raw" and natural. To counter the low planes under the cheekbones, Kendal used M·A·C's upcoming Coffee Walnut Pro* Sculpting Cream (which she also blended through the crease of the eye for a contour). Next up, she blended Accentuate Pro Sculpting cream* over the high planes, above the cheekbones, bridge of nose and above the brow bone as well as over the eyelids for highlight. Finally she swept Studio Careblend Pressed Powder through the middle of the face for a polishing effect.

Using Richly Honed Pro Sculpting Cream* to intensify the inner corner of the browbones, she then applied M·A·C Pro Black Crème Liner along the upper lashline to give it slight definition. Brows were give an boyish flair with a straight shape and soft fullness created with eye shadows. To finish off the look, the Pro Conceal and Correct Palette/Light was lightly blended over lips to tone down their natural color.

The hair was inspired by kind of girl everyone wants to be, a perfect match for Wang’s chic, modern, must-have sportswear - led by Redken Creative Consultant, Guido.

It’s a very simple look, an easy down style with a center part and hair tucked behind the ears. On damp hair, Guido applied satinwear 02 ultimate blow-dry lotion all over to create the foundation for the style and blow-dried the hair until about 80% dry. Creating a very clean center part, he then applied outshine 01 anti-frizz polishing milk from the mid-lengths to ends and allowed hair air dry the remaining 20% to bring out the natural texture. The outshine 01 prevented hair from frizzing as it dried. When dry, hair was tucked behind the ears for a simple finish.

Looks from the Rock and Republic show

Last time I spoke about the celebs who attended the Rock & and Republic for Kohl's fashion show but now it's time to get to the actual FASHION! The line consists of everyday wear - tees, dresses and denim - but pumped up a bit. For the ladies, the runway was filled with sequined camis ($48), dresses ($70) and heels ($74.99) and denim skinnies and flares. For men there were bootcut jeans and graphic T shirts, among others.

NYFW: Backstage at Band of Outsiders Fall/Winter 2012

This season's Band of Outsiders collection looked a a little Mexican vacation inspired and, in the words of Dick Page, "gets little into Ennio Morricone The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." The makeup is how you would want to look if you were camping, alternating the looks slightly whether they were dressed in Boy Girl or Girl Girl.

According to Page, Shiseido Artistic Director, the look was a "little bit bronzy and toned with gold and bronzed highlights mixed together but not in the kind of Gucci way -- not sculpty and glamourous. they look a little bit dusty and a little bit dirty there are little bits of white highlights and gold highlights depending on their skin tone - around the eyes, under the brow bone."

He started by the moisturizing the face using Shiseido's The Skincare Multi-Energizing Cream and evened skin tone with a wash of the new Shiseido Makeup Radiant Lifting Foundation SPF17 (launching Fall 2012). Shiseido Makeup Bronzer was applied on the forehead, upper cheekbones and chin. Page then applied a combination of Shiseido Makeup Luminizing Satin Face Color in Soft Beam Gold (BE206) and High Beam White (WT905), followed by a blend of Soft Beam Gold mixed with loose translucent powder. Using a large powder brush, Page combined the Luminizing Satin Face Color in Soft Beam Gold (BE206) and the Bronzer in Light (1) and applied the combo to the center of the cheek, blending across the bridge of the nose, along the forehead, and dusting a bit on the chin.

"Eyebrows are kind of amped up but still looking natural depending on their skin tone so the black girls get this [Shiseido Makeup Shimmering Cream Eye Color] Caviar cream eye shadow, the redheads get the Leather - a reddish brown cream - and the blondes get Meadow or Sable which are these blondey colors," described Page.

There was no mascara, no liner, no eyeshadow per se as he wanted the girls to look like they live in these clothes.

With a stronger focus on skin and brows, Dick “erased” the lips with foundation and created two neutral looks. On Boy-Girl he applied Shiseido Makeup Luminizing Satin Face Color in High Beam White (WT905) along the cupid's bow and the edge of the upper lip line. Shiseido Benefiance Full Correction Lip Treatment was reapplied and then blotted for a colorless look. On Girl-Girl, Page lined the inner part of the lower lip with Shiseido Makeup Lacquer Rouge in Nocturn (RD607), which is a new product launching Fall 2012, to create the slightest trace of "just bitten" color.

NYFW: Backstage at Rachel Antonoff Fall/Winter 2012

Backstage at Rachel Antonoff, I spoke to M.A.C Senior Artist, Keri Blair, who stated that the look was a little bit hopeful and romantic, sweet yet sophisticated.

Blair began by using M.A.C.’s soon-to-be-released Sculpting Cream in Richly Honed and Dark Currant cream eye shadow, both rich shades of brown, which she described as "very diffused and very translucent." Next she tapped in with a new Pro Longwear eye shadow called Uninterrupted, which is "beautiful dirty ochre color, a mustardy yellow", with a 224 brush tapped onto lids. Blair described M.A.C's 224 brush as an extension of her right arm since it doesn't give any hard lines. Finally, she pressed White Gold Pro Pigment, a loose shimmer, over the lids to create a wet, luminescent effect.

Antonoff's theme was girls on a dock at night or twilight so Blair wanted to ensure the makeup meshed well. She says, "I wanted to emulate that feeling with makeup, what moonlit water looks like. That's why I'm doing so many layers." She wanted the makeup to look wet but "I didn't want it be deconstructed. I didn't want to use Vaseline or a gloss or something like that to break down the makeup. I just wanted it to have the appearance of wetness."

On the cheeks, she applied So Sweet, So Easy cream blush which added sweetness back to makeup.

CND's Candice Manacchio designed three playful nails for the gal with a sense of adventure:
"Starry Night" (left) evoked the nighttime sky on a lake with two coats of CND Colour in Midnight Sapphire with sponged overlay of Eclectic Purple and Studio White, with a coat of CND Effects in Sapphire Sparkle.

"Flirty Flower" (center) was created with two coats of bold red CND Colour in Flashpoint with hand detailed ferns using CND Colours in Brilliant White and Anchor Blue.

"True Red" (right) was created with two coats of CND Colour in Flashpoint.

Continuing with the moonlit theme, Jenny Balding for Cutler Salon created a really sleek and simple do. Using Redken's Hard Gel, all hair was pulled away from the face into a shiny ponytail tied at the base.

Fanny Wang + Refinery 29 = Music To My Ears

Remember when I wrote this? Before leaving the house, I make sure there are four things in my bag: phone, pink lipstick (or gloss!), Starbucks bottled Mocha frap (addicted!) and a rockin' pair of oversized headphones. While the phone has been upgraded and the lipstick is new (iPhone 4s and MAC Quick Sizzle), I'm still OBSESSED with headphones - the bigger the better. When Refinery29 reached out and told me of their current Reserve deal with Fanny Wang, I got über excited.

Fanny Wang gives you the option to customize their headphones with a slew of different colors. From now until February 26, you can create your own customizable set of headphones for 40% off retail via Reserve. I can't comment on the sound quality since I've never owned/tried/experimented with the brand but I'm praying they have some awesome noise cancellation powers. Now, I'm neither creative nor imaginative (same thing, I'm aware) but after an hour of deliberating, swapping out band colors and debating on whether or not pink and purple really go together, I narrowed it down to three options.

MIND BLOWING COLOR COMBINATIONS! (not really) Which did I order? That's a secret I'll never tell (until they arrive at my office and I live tweet the entire experience).

VIP Night with Rock & Republic

Friday evening I was sure to lose my mind when Chuck Bass (née Ed Westwick), and all his eternal hotness, walked right behind me. If you follow me on Twitter you'll know that Gossip Girl is my favorite show on Earth, but that night I was at the Rock & Republic fashion show in New York, courtesy of Kohl's and Glam.

It was unreal. More celebs came out for the debut of the Rock & Republic collection at Kohl's including Mena Suvari, Molly Sims, and Penn Badgley (aka Lonely Boy Dan Humphrey in GG), and Zoe Saldana (who looked airbrush, she's so beautiful!). Best part, all of these gorgeous people sat right in front of me. Imagine the heart attacks I was having all evening. Major.

Inside, pre-show, the mood was intimate but energetic as we awaited the models to strut the stuff in R&R wares. Stay tuned for looks of the new collection coming this week but in the meantime, join in on the fun via the fun widget below!

NYFW: Backstage at Creatures of the Wind Fall/Winter 2012

Having covered backstage beauty during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week before, you hear a lot of the same inspirations. My favorite is precisely what James Boehmer, NARS Director of Global Artistry, seems to have been inspired by for CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runner ups, Creatures of the Wind. “The look is about ethereal, forest-wet skin,” said Boehmer. I love it when fashion folk talk about girls running through the forest, or falling asleep in said forest, or getting caught in a torrential downpour (yep, in the forest). Because what girl DOESN'T do this?

Continues Boehmer, “You can't use enough moisturizer - it's dewy and really radiant. The eye should be defined in its shape but worn-in with its effect. As if you can see the eyelid through it, which we get from the gloss.”

And so he used NARS' Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF30/PA+++, which is infused with naturally derived ingredients that hydrate and evens skin tone. On the eyes, he applied Cayenne, Bengali and Coconut Grove Single Eyeshadows as well as Kuala Lumpur Duo Eyeshadow. Eyes were defined with Mambo eyeliner pencil.

On the lips he used Rouge Tribal Larger Than Life® Lip Gloss (new for Spring 2012) and Triple X Lip Gloss.

Hairstylist Odile Gilbert gave hair a bit of texture with woven braids - a tough yet romantic feel. Twists and braids were created with Mousse Substantive, Lotion Densitive, and Couble Force Control Ultime all by Kérastase. For nails Ana-Maria, for Essie, applied two coats of Essie's Sew Psyched, topped off with one thin coat of Mint Candy Apple.

NYFW: Backstage at Monika Chiang Fall/Winter 2012

Designer Monika Chiang was inspired by model-philanthropist Elettra Wiedemann when creating the beauty look for her Fall collection. "Elettra is a perfect muse for me," said Chiang. Wiedemann is also a Lancôme ambassadress/spokesmodel so it's only fitting that the brand was behind the makeup look this season.

Lancôme National Makeup Artist Tarek Abbas created “enhanced natural beauty” for Chiang’s debut NY Fashion Week presentation. Abbas contoured cheeks using the brand's new Blush Subtil Palette (in Nectar Lace- #126) and swept bronzer around the hairline and chin. He mixed two neutral shades of Color Design Eyeshadow (Vintage and Chic) to create a wash of color around the eyes that was a bit subtle, and defined the eyes with dark brown eyeliner, carefully smudged and blended. To finish up the eyes, he applied one coat of Lancôme Définicils Mascara in Brown.

To top off the look, Abbas applied Lancôme's new Rouge In Love lipstick in Lasting Kiss with his finger and pressed the color onto the lips to pump up the model’s natural lip color.

NYFW: Backstage at Richard Chai Love Fall/Winter 2012

For the second season in a row, designer Richard Chai called upon Korean skincare brand Dr. Jart+ to give his models nourished, radiant and natural looking skin before hitting the runway.

Before they went into hair and makeup, models were prepped with Dr. Jart’s hero product, the Beauty Balm (or BB cream). For those who don't know Dr. Jart+ is a staple in Korea and recently hit our shores. BB cream works as a moisturizer, sunscreen and treatment serum while hiding uneven skin tone so well that it minimizes the need for foundation or concealer. It's available exclusively at Sephora.

Depending on the model’s skin needs, makeup artist Kristen Arnett used Dr.Jart’s Water Fuse Beauty Balm or Premium Beauty Balm (thicker than Water Fuse) to neutralize any pigments/redness, moisturize, and soothe skin. On darker skin models, the BB cream was used a gentle highlight.

Makeup artist James Kaliardos for M·A·C Cosmetic created the look and went a little androgynous. Using M·A·C Pro's Taupe Powder Blush, he lightly swept under model's cheekbones and over temples for a soft contour and applied Studio Finish SPF 15 Concealer only where needed.

Kaliardos blended through brows to create a strong, yet soft textured brow. On the eyes he used M·A·C Coffee Walnut Pro Sculpting Cream* and blended over the eyelid and crease in a straight, but well blended shape, adding a bit under the inner brow as well. He lightly applied M·A·C Mauveless Pro Longwear Eyeshadow* through the lower lashes under eyes. Lashes are curled, but left bare.

He finished off the look with Classic Nude Fall Trend Lip Palette* dabbed into the lip as a stain with fingers.

This week has been brutal only because I managed to get sick one day before the start of fashion week -- luck be a lady. I've been dealing with a stuffy nose, head, and body aches all while trying to go to events and launches with a perky attitude. Normally, I'd use my weekend as a time to rest but alas I'll be backstage reporting from the tents and MILK Studios. With all of that complaining out of the way, I decided to make my outfit relaxed and non-fussy. The last thing I want is to worry about a too tight this or too tight that when I can barely walk three blocks without sneezing.

PS: if you want to see me at my most graceful, look at me when I sneeze (not really, it's kind of gross)

Designer collaborations with high street stores are all the rage. I won't lie -- I live by them. I'm one of the creeps who stay up 'till midnight stalking websites to see if the items are live (don't underestimate the power of amazing concealer the following day!). Everyday I take the train where I've been blitzed with ads for the upcoming Doo.Ri for Impulse, and you know what -- I'm excited (surprise).

Korean-American, Doo.Ri Chung, launched her line in 2001 and debuted her first runway show in 2003. By '06, Chung won the coveted CFDA Swarovski Perry Ellis award for emerging talent in womenswear. Five Anti-Aging Tips You Should Start Now

It's like no matter where you look folks are talking about anti-aging. Between miracle products and intensive regimens, women are determined to turn their bathroom sink into the fountain of youth. Perhaps it's because I'm a die hard beauty girl but I started amping up my skincare routine around the age of 20. While I wasn't battling wrinkles (more like acne!), I made it a point to take preventative measure by using eye creams and ow, at the age of 24, I've integrated serums. However, the word of skincare can be scary if you're not prepared - alpha-hydroxy, proteins, enzymes, acai, retinols - the list of ingredients can seem more like a science project than a face cream. No worries, I'm here to guide you through it all (and really, it's not hard as it seems!)

don't forget to wear shades!

1. Wear SPF: yes, you've heard this before but I bet in the dead of winter you may skip this step since it's a bit cloudier out, huh? Or what if you're a bit older? Some people think most their sun “damage” was done in their teens and 20’s so why bother using sunscreen regularly now? This is a big no-no as sun damage is cumulative. It’s never too late to regularly use an SPF (at least SPF 30). Apply generously and don't forget to reapply. If you touch up your lipstick so many times a day, why leave out your skincare?

2. Exfoliate: exfoliate regularly (twice a week) with a gentle scrub or at-home peel to remove dead skin cells. Then...

3. Moisturize: I have friends who think it's absolutely okay to skip moisturizer...WRONG! The best moisturizers are those that sink into the skin rather than lay on top of the skin. Not only does moisturizing offer hydrate skin but it can protect from further free radical damage. As you get older, your skin can become dull and uneven. To combat this, start incorporating moisturizers with collagen such as peptides or retinols. Another must? Regular exfoliation with a gentle scrub or at-home peel.

4. Get some zzz's: Your body uses bedtime as the opportune time to regenerate, repair, and replenish what it has lost as a result of daily stresses. There are few environmental stressors to detract skin from healing itself as night, so why would you deprive yourself of that? Blood flow increases, the skin absorption of actives is at its highest rate, and cell turnover peaks -- these are a few of the benefits. Get into a regular sleep cycle and show your skin some TLC.

5. Don't forget you hands! Despite all of your efforts to save your face, skipping out on your hands can be a dead giveaway when it comes to aging. From tearing boxes, constant manicures, typing away on a smart phone in the blistering cold our hands go through a lot! Like your facial routine, keep SPF hand cream in your bag for constant use.

do you remember this dress? I've worn it here and, quite honestly, too many times to count :D It's beyond comfy but I wanted to mix it up a bit. Yesterday I decided to fold the top portion inside the dress to turn it into a skirt et voila! one item, remixed.

P.S. my roots are shwing something crazy (as you can see). I'm currently trying to decide if I should go fully natural but a relaxer is calling my name -- like, this weekend.

You may remember I told you about me partnering with Glam and Kohl's to celebrate the launch of Rock and republic for Kohl's (remember?) and we're almost there! I can't wait for the fashion show (next week so follow me on Twitter!) and rock out the brand. Before all of that we get to take a peek at the new line since it has officially launched online and will be in stores February 15. After taking a glance at the site, my debit card is shivering in my wallet because I INSTANTLY spotted items that needed to be in my closet like yesterday. Peep this:

1. Rock & Republic Platform Wedges ($74.99): I love a good platform wedge and have been itching to get one for weeks now. This snakeskin pattern and five and a half heel (don't worry, it's a platform so yu have support) looks like the item to join my closet (aka I've added it my cart already).

Maybelline New York Super Stay 14HR Lipstick

I am a lipstick girl through thick and thin. This wasn't always the case, however, as in my youth (as if I'm so old now), I use to only sport gloss. Oh to be young and naive! Now I ~~hoard~~ ~~stockpile~~ purchase lipstick like it's going out of style. With lipstick often comes bleeding, feathering, and reapplying every five minutes but those were minor details -- things I can get over. While it's not ideal, I've gotten used to having to constantly reapply my look.

Now I have to do that much less courtesy of Maybelline -- my drugstore go to.

Maybelline's new SuperStay 14HR Lipstick promises 14 hours of staying power while remaining lightweight and pigmented. Call me crazy but 14 hours is a bit ambitious!

Maybelline's patented Color Keep technology uses flexible resins to envelop rich pigments in a unique longwear film. This allows the color to meld with lips for Super-Staying power. The lipstick (available in 20 shades) is weightless in application and doesn't dry down matte or skip/ drag along the lips when applying. It's a smooth application from start to finish. I haven't had any experience with it feathering or flaking off (something I abhor in lipsticks -- so gross!). Plus they smell a bit like candy which never hurts ;)

Final verdict: 14 hours was a bit ambitious as it only lasted about eight or nine hours. That said, it's still pretty amazing since I applied at 8am and had to reapply at 5pm as I was finishing up work (well, as my mind started to wander). The colors are amazing and I've found love in Eternal Rose, a gorgeous bright pink pictured here, and Ceaseless Caramel, a muted brown that makes a great neutral.

motions "naturally you" collection

Thursday afternoon I found myself in a room full of beautiful brown beauties with lush curls -- and lots of champagne :) -- for the launch of Motions' new hair care line, Naturally You! The line was created for women of color who embrace their natural hair texture (though it is not limited to natural girls as us relaxed folks can join the party). Motions has been a part of my styling routine for Lord knows how long. I trust them with my hair since the products aren't heavy, greasy or harmful so it's good to see them paying attention to the needs of women and creating something specifically for the kinky/ curly/coiled set.

How does Naturally You! differ from what is currently available in the brand's repertoire? Well, all of the products, from the shampoo to the moisturizing masks, contain more conditioning properties that women with textured hair often need but miss out on. Naturally You! is specially formulated with ingredients to moisturize each strand for a smooth finish (hello shea butter, avocado and coconut oil!), while leaving out all of the stripping ingredients (calling you out sulfates).

If you're like me and have a relaxer you can use this too! I'm looking at a good inch or two of new growth and am contemplating going fully natural, however, I was able to use the full line without any issues. The products are super lightweight and don't leave my thin strands feeling weighed down.The difference is noticeable almost immediately when using because my hair just felt clean in the shower while rinsing. There wasn't any buildup or residue post wash and while styling my hair (I twisted my hair) I noticed that the "Hydrate My Curls Pudding" was super light (seriously a little goes a long way).

At the luncheon, I had the chance to speak to mega celebrity stylist Ursula Stephen (the genius behind Rihanna's mane) who gave me a few tips on managing relaxed and transitioning hair:
1. Conditioner is your best friend: Relaxed hair is often left dry which can lead to breakage. To counter this it's important that women of all hair textures deep condition their hair at least once a week.
2. When in doubt, rod set: for women who are transitioning and do not want to go the route of the Big Chop, rod set your hair after washing. This is less harsh on the hair than blow drying and the curls from the rods mimic the curl pattern of your new growth so it's not as noticeable.
3. Did I mention you have to deep condition?
4. Do you!: don't pay attention to what other women are doing with their hair and don't try to mimic their style. Yes, you can learn a few tips and tricks from bloggers and vloggers. Yes, everyone wants Tracee Ellis Ross hair but the reality is not everyone has that natural texture. Learn YOUR texture and adjust accordingly.

some things are meant to be purchased. at least that's what I told myself when I found this sweater on sale at zara right before the holiday madness. perfectly oversized, great gold detailing and just enough spunk to spice up an outfit. I know I will be living in this little guy, especially since I've made a promise to not shop for the next -wait for it- two months. self imposed bans are never fun and it's going to take the grace of god himself to get me through. get ready to see my outfits remixed :)

Gearing up for NYFW

It's certainly no secret that I *love* fashion week (#NYFW). The clothing, backstage hair and makeup, runway shows, it's an AMAZING time to see the newest trends while doing some sick street style spotting. Editors, models, and bloggers are running wild across the city and I can't wait to capture it all :)

One thing to look forward to are all of the launches, specifically Rock & Republic for Kohl's. For a brief moment in my life, I was obsessed (!) with Rock & Republic and now the line is going to be launching only at Kohl's. I can't wait to see how the line has evolved. Take It Off with NARS Makeup Removing Water

When it comes to makeup removers, I'm a dedicated lover of this guy. But seeing as it's only eye makeup remover, I've been known to douse my cotton ball and rub it across my face (#dontjudge).

Now I don't have to. NARS allows me to take it all off (cue Ke$ha) with their new Makeup Removing Water ($28). Where some makeup removers leave my skin feeling greasey, this one is effective in removing makeup without leaving any residue.

The great news is that it's soap-free, oil-free, and alcohol-free and removes makeup without excessive rubbing. Hoorah! If you wear a LOT of makeup, you may go through several cotton pads at which point you're best washing it off instead. Infused with cucumber, chamomile, and hyaluronic acid I find it a pretty great way to lazily take everything off at night.

Always in the market for products that relieve dry skin, I recently welcomed The Seaweed Bath Co.’s Wildly Natural Seaweed™ Body Cream into my beauty arsenal. The Seaweed Bath Co. is a line of products that focus on one ingredient - the seaweed (or specifically the bladderwrack seaweed). Every product from the brand contains seaweed, which has the active ingredient Fucoidan, which is said to have amazing health benefits.

The only time I've ever gotten down with the (sea)weed is in my sushi. While I can't speak to the health properties, let's discuss how this bad boy handles ashiness okay?
