Reflecting on Steve Jobs' Death

I've never met Steve Jobs, and yet it feels like I've lost someone very close to me. Steve Jobs has died and left a hole in my social construct of the world. Somehow I thought he would always be with us - just like the Apple brand, which has defined our generation with its clean white devices.

I had just finished moaning over the details of the neurovasculature of the parapharyngeal space when I heard the news. It was a big reality check. It reminded me that what we're learning and how well we learn it will have a direct impact on people's lives in the future. People like Steve Jobs. People like those who donated their bodies to our school so that we may learn from them. It is very humbling.

That my grandmother is also losing her battle with cancer has made Jobs' death all the more poignant for me. At this moment, I feel very connected to the world outside of the medical school bubble. I'm sure many people across the globe are not only mourning his loss, but also remembering their loved ones who have passed away. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Med School Ramble #1

So far, medical school is akin to taking illegal drugs. (A statement of dubious validity since I've never used illegal drugs before.) Morning, afternoon, evening, you think about studying. You really don't WANT to study. You know that any more studying will crush your joy for life into smithereens, but somehow you just can't help it. There it goes - that creepy inner voice cautioning you to take heed every particle of detail that's blasted at you... what if it's on the exam?! Or better yet, What if I need to use this information to save somebody's life one day?!?! Just one more page before I sleep... just one more!

Well, I'm happy to report that I'm OVER IT... almost. I'm over sweating the small stuff. Quizzes? Get off my bizzzness! Preparing for anatomy? Sure, sure. Let's focus on the real target, shall we? PASSING.

...OK, that sounded overly confident. I'll admit that I'm not quite there yet. I'll get there soon. Soon.

Top 10+1 Movies I Can Watch Over and Over

Woo hoo! As summer winds to a close, I just felt like posting some of my all-time-feel-good-not-serious movies. My basic criteria for a feel-good movie: 1) There's no doubt that the protagonist will win, and love conquers. 2) The villain is not annoying and pretty weak-sauce, and eventually dies or ends up in jail. 3) Good music and pacing. There are many more movies that I'd gladly watch over and over again, but for the sake of brevity, I'll just list 11 of my most memorable. Feel free to do a list of your own!! Yes. I. Tag. You!!

Seriously. This may be billed as an action film, but it's honestly more like a chick flick - who can resist Keanu Reeves in action?! Jack Traven is the epitome of the perfect man. Forget 'The Matrix'! I also have a sweet spot for the leading lady, as she has my name. :P

Annie: I hope not, 'cause you know, relationships that start under intense circumstances, they never last.
Jack: Oh yeah? (I love his facial expression as he says this!! xD)

The poster listed to the right is for the Temple of Doom, which is my favorite of the original trilogy. But all three movies (except for the most recent 4th addition) are watchable anytime anywhere for me. None of our new film technology can beat the awesome story-telling of the Indiana Jones films. I will make an exception for The Mummy (just the first movie) - that one I enjoyed immensely. But the Nicholas Cage treasure-hunting-grave-robbing nonsense is to be avoided at all costs for me.

Indiana Jones: Are you trying to develop a sense of humor or am I going deaf?

I'm a fan of most Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli's films. This one, IMO, has the most attention to detail and oddball character designs. You can watch this film 10 times, and still see something new the 11th time around. It's the most creative coming-of-age story I've seen yet.

I enjoyed the English-dubbed, subtitled, and Chinese versions equally. Only thing that bothers me is that in one of the versions (forget which), the boy/dragon character has a slightly girly voice, which slightly ruins the slightly lovey scenes. But just slightly!

Ohhh my gosh HOW can anyone NOT put this on their all-time movie list? xD As a choir girl, Sound of Music always gets me singing along and cheering for Julie Andrew's character! The scenery, costumes, and characters are just awesome. I'll admit that the second half of this film - after Andrew's gets married to Christopher Plummer's character - is a little tense and dark, but I don't mind it too much.

The other Andrew's film that comes to mind is Mary Poppins! Love that one as well, but I think Sound of Music can't be beat for it's wider age appeal.

Aww! This is such a feel-good movie! Then again, what classic Meg Ryan film isn't feel-good? Hanks and Ryan's characters are so awesome together - their quirks definitely light up the screen. The smart script is part of what makes the film watchable over and over again.
Joe Fox: It wasn't... personal.
Kathleen Kelly: What is that supposed to mean? I am so sick of that. All that means is that it wasn't personal to you. But it was personal to me. It's *personal* to a lot of people. And what's so wrong with being personal, anyway?
Joe Fox: Uh, nothing.
Kathleen Kelly: Whatever else anything is, it ought to begin by being personal.

Ahh the charm of Audrey Hepburn! How cute was she in this film?! I'll admit, I haven't watched many Gregory Peck films, but he's so delightful in this film! I definitely prefer this over the more often lauded 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. That one has a deeper psychosis at work, which is fine, but not my cup of tea when I want a break from studying.

And OMG, how gorgeous is her princess dress?!?!

I love Anne! She's so awesomely stubborn and smart! The fact that she's a big reader struck a chord with me when I was young. Although I've read all the books in the Anne series, and I have to say, I enjoy the films a more. This is because in the books, the romance between Anne and Gilbert is spread out more. But you're able to see the romance build to a satisfying end by the end of the second film 'Anne of Avonlea'. YAY! :D

I love the clothing of the period, and the lovely shots of Prince Edward Island. Because of this film, I want to have my wedding near the ocean with a lighthouse in the background. xD

I was adamantly against reading the seemingly frilly Harry Potter books when they first came out. But when they hit my local Costco and my little brother picked one up, I decided to read a few lines out of curiosity. And. I. was. hooked.

I didn't have too many expectations from the movies, but they were enjoyable for me because of the fantastic music. I also liked seeing the castle and characters come to life. Surprisingly, my imagined Harry, Hermione, and Ron were very similar to the actors chosen to play them. Who wanted to go to Harvard after seeing the films? *Raises hand!*

The epic film that started all epic films. I think even non-geeky-sci-fi viewers can appreciate the beauty, scope and detail of the Lord of the Rings series. I tried reading the book after seeing the movie, but that was a big mistake.

I think there are 2 camps: LOTR readers and HP readers. If you loved reading LOTR, I don't think you'd appreciate HP much... totally different beasts if you ask me. But hands down, the LOTR films beat HP out of the park.

Independence Day is always on TV every 4th of July, and I tend to watch it every year if I get a chance. I really like the dynamics between the 2 main leads - Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum. *SIGH* What happened to those good old days of great story-telling? If Independence Day were to be remade in 2011, it'd feature vapid dialogue and acting, and overly exaggerated film effects. BLAH.

And Bill Pullman is such a charismatic president! *Love*

OK, one last guilty pleasure - The American President. What is that?! you ask. Admittedly I don't recall this ever being in theaters... but I'm sure it was. I saw it on TV and was immediately taken by Annette Bening!! Her fresh, awkward yet sweet persona is a bit reminiscent of Meg Ryan, but smarter and feistier. And although Michael Douglas isn't my first choice for leading man, he was surprisingly engaging as President and love-interest for Bening.

Interestingly enough, Martin Sheen plays the Vice President in this film, and would later graduate to Presidency in the TV series The West Wing. But he is forever etched in my mind as the loyal and serious wingman to Douglas' character.

Lunasol Fall 2011 Collection - Research!

Is anyone excited about Lunasol's upcoming release? I was pretty pumped when I saw the ads for it! Each palette provides 3 different shimmer levels for the liner and highlight shade, which is awesome. I usually a prefer matte or semi-matte highlight to balance to shimmer present in most Japanese eyeshadow palettes. Obviously each section will be difficult to pick up if you're using brushes, but I'm a sponge-tip girl so this presents no problem.

Several asian bloggers have posted swatches of the collection. Originally I wanted all 5 palettes, but after looking at the swatches, I've preliminarily narrowed it down to 2 for now - 03 Mysterious Beige (purple) and 05 Deep Beige (gray). I will focus on the 05 palette in this post, as that is the one I'm most excited for. Here are the posts that helped me out:

First, I looked at Tingjp's swatches below. As you can see, everything appears to have very subtle shine. 01 looks a bit warm, and even though 04 is called "Cool Beige," the swatch of it (not shown very well here) is still quite warm and yellow-based. 05 looks the coolest by far, and 03 also appears more neutral. I love how 05 looks here!

Next, looking at Sharon0418's post, you can see more swatches and an FOTD using the 05 palette. Although the palette itself looks quite cool, the swatch and FOTD makes it seem warmer, and greener?!?!? I was a little puzzled. Sharon herself noticed the green. At first, I thought maybe the gray, once applied to the yellow-ness in asian skin will make the shadow appear like an olive-gray. But then I realized that doesn't make much sense. Lunasol just isn't the type of brand to do things accidentally.

Finally, looking at Yuki's post, I was able to discern a more plausible explanation: there seems to be green shimmers in the 05 palette! Yuki's swatches and product photos are fantastic as you can clearly see the sparkle details. Except for the darkest liner shade and two white shades, the 05 palette has green shimmer particles throughout. This can better account for Sharon's olive-y FOTD above.

OK, that's the end of my analysis! Regardless of how detailed blog photos are, it's nothing compared to holding and using the product yourself. So, here my personal conclusions from researching the palettes in this collection:

1) The liner and highlight shades do indeed have shimmer variation, and thus make these palettes more versatile for me.

2) The shimmer level as compared to previous Lunasol releases is difficult to discern, but seems to be on the more subtle side.

3) The green shimmer in the 05 palette worries me, since green isn't that flattering on me IMO. I don't mind that 01 and 04 are a tiny bit warm, I just have too many warm-neutrals. The 02 pink doesn't excite me much, but I may change my mind. So far, 03 is still on my list.

Chip Review: OISHI Ribbed Cracklings Salt and Vinegar

I love chips! I have no qualms about opening up a bag of chips at a friend's house, even when said friend is not there to give express permission. That is how I came across this little bag of delight. How can I resist when salt and vinegar are my two favorite ingredients?! This thing had my name written all over it.

There are 2 major points of excellence about this bag of Cracklings:

1) The flavor complexity is just right. As you take a bite, spurts of salty and sour hit your senses independently. As the chip disintegrates, the flavors mix into a tangy brilliance and right before you swallow, a surprising and refreshing spice builds and remains.
2) The delivery is fantastic. The chip is thicker than most, and thus gives a satisfying "CRUNCH!" when you bite into it. This properly distributes the flavor everywhere. Each chip also takes a few more chews so it feels more substantial than your average LAY'S. This is true to their claim on the bag: "Beer Match series of snacks are cut in big, big bite-size pieces. Flavors were selected specifically for a beer drinkers enjoyment!" Amen! (Although I don't drink, and you certainly don't have to in order to enjoy this.) She's obviously more experienced than I am, so if you are a chip connoisseur, you may find her review more helpful.

Next I'll point out some less crucial and yet not-so-trivial details about this bag:

1) The packaging is very good. The plastic feels smooth and weighty - not as heavy as Kettle, but good enough. I also like how it's matte instead of shiny.
2) The size is perfect. The 1.67oz/50g bag isn't so big that you'll look like a monster eating out of it, but isn't so tiny that you wish you had some leftovers. If you feel overzealous and want more than usual, eat the whole thing. Or, you can finish it over 2 or 3 sittings.
3) Price and Availability. I haven't tried looking for this in stores yet, but here's an online store that sells it for a good price. This is a product of the Philippines.

Overall, I give this a 4.5/5. The flavor, texture, and crunch factor are all excellent. -0.5 for availability. Ok ok, so an entire post about chips and not a peep about nutrition? What kind of doctor will I be, you ask? So here I'll state the obvious: chips and other processed foods are not good for you. (But is it good for my S-O-U-L? You betcha.) Please eat at your own discretion.

I've just moved out of my house and I'm currently staying with some girlfriends. My stuff is everywhere! I won't be doing any posts for the next week, while I finish up papers and get ready for Asia! Exciting!! Before I leave, I may do a post showing you what cosmetics I'm bringing with me.

So, there have been a lot changes in my life which I won't go into the details of. Life is so unpredictable! It seems like I say this every year, but it's just as true this year, if not more so. Life is like this for me right now:

Last week was pretty dreary, and there was lots of thunder and lightening. I quite like though, don't you? Thunder is the click of God's camera, and lightening is the flash! So I always smile.

I'm in the process of obtaining my Visa so I can go to Asia this summer. Don't be fooled by the easy paperwork - the tricky part is turning in your application to the office:

After my number is called (3 hours later), I went up to the counter. A lady with circle lenses and weird inner corner highlight (abbreviation: Lady with CL and WICH) took a look at my Visa application:

Me:   Nope.

Me: Oh. OK...

New Skincare Stuff + DL1961 Jeans Rave

My order from Sasa.com came in a few days ago (it took 2+ weeks because I was silly and ordered during Easter weekend). I got a few sheet masks - Silk Whitia had a BOGOF deal, so it was a good time to stock up. I also got a sleeping mask for days when I'm too lazy to wait for sheet masks. And lastly a couple of sunscreens. Since I'm going to be in Asia this summer, I thought I'd try a higher SPF.

This is everything.

Hisamitsu Lifecella Ceramide Essence Mask and Hyaluronic Acid Mask

Silk Whitia Whitening and Moisturizing Mask x 2

Ingredients ~

Tsaio Sunscreen Moisture Emulsion SPF50+ and C+M Sun Care Extra Screen Milk SPF90

C+M sunscreen ingredients ~

The bottle is really small, as you can see.

Texture is on the thick side of thin... xD

Leaves a slight white cast, but gives you a realllllyyy smooth finish (due to the dimethicone)

Tsaio sunscreen ingredients ~

This one is very thin compared to the C+M.

Really easy to spread.

Blends in right away. No white cast.

Beauty Diy Red Wine Polyphenols Invigorating Night Jelly

This doesn't have the absolute best ingredients, but it really works well, especially for the price.

It really does smell like wine!!!

A nice jelly texture that turns more watery once spread onto the skin.

Rave about DL1961 - Hey! Their 4-way stretch claim actually holds true! Ladies go get yo-self a pair today! I ordered mine from Shopbop.com. They run true to size. I usually prefer True Religion, but their jeans are thicker and thus better for the winter.

Review: SEACRET Cuticle Oil + Body Lotion + NOTD

Hello! I recently caught up on all my lectures, so this is a good time to blog. : ) A couple of you were interested in SEACRET, having seen it in malls being promoted by pushy sales reps. I certainly understand how this can dissuade people from trying their stuff, but I actually find it to be a solid brand.

SEACRET Cuticle Oil, Natural Body Lotion. The vile of oil is cute, but I would've preferred a wider base so it stands more stably.

The bottle is stiff, so you can't squeeze - just pour it out. There is a slight tendency to pour out more than you need, but the top is bottle-nosed so as to prevent spillage.

Really thin formula.

Absorbs pretty quickly - no oily residue remains afterwards.

So, here are my nails before. No polish, except strengthening base coat.

One drop of oil on each cuticle bed.

After it has absorbed completely.

Product: ~$15 for 1 fl.oz/ 30ml. Plastic hard bottle with screw top.
Overall - cuticle oil: 5/5. I'd recommend for you to try this, if you are looking for cuticle treatment. I haven't tried many cuticle oils, so I'm sure there are comparable ones out there. But for my purposes, it's does well. It lasts throughout the day, certainly longer than Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream. It's liquid formulation allows it penetrate more fully into the skin.

This is more than enough to cover both hands/wrists.

Very smooth gel-like formula. Easy to blend, and not oily.

No residue.

Product: ~$20. 6.8 fl.oz/200ml. They don't sell the Natural one anymore, but there's lots of other choices on their site.
Overall - body lotion: 3/5. This is a very good lotion. Better than most out there, but I feel that the results are comparable to Aveeno. So for me, this product is not cost-effective.

Final thoughts: If you are thinking of improving the health of your cuticles/nails, you can certainly check out this brand. Their products are solid and easy to use. There are other brands out there and I can't say how they compare to SEACRET. But with any care regiment, it's really your diligence and application consistency that'll make the difference in the end.

Lastly, a quick NOTD! Sephora by OPI - Nonfat Soy Half Caff. I always put cuticle oil as the last step in my manicures.

Chanel Mica Rose + Current Nail Care

Hooray, my first nail polish post! It's really difficult taking photos of polish (major props to all nail bloggers out there). I failed in capturing the multicolored shimmers in Mica Rose, but other (more legitimate) bloggers have already done so. Mica Rose is from Chanel's permanent line, and was first introduced in their Holiday 2009 collection, Celestial Lights.

I prefer applying only 1 coat for this polish, because 2 coats gives a candy-pink color, which is too cool-toned for my liking. The rose undertones definitely translate better in 1 coat on my nails.

In direct natural light. No flash.

In natural light, but not directly facing it.

Next 3 were taken under indoor flash.

At $25 for 0.4oz, this polish is very pricey. A pretty good dupe would be Catrice Just Married, but I'm glad I got this because it's difficult to dupe color depth, formulation AND finish altogether.

On to nail care! It's very simple really - I use these two products that came in a set. These were given to me by a friend (thanks Steph!), so I'm not sure what store she purchased them from. However, you can buy SEACRET products online. Here's the link to the nail care set.

The cuticle oil is definitely a must-try. I place 1 drop of the cuticle oil on each of my nails, wait a little bit, then apply the lotion over my hands. Really simple, and keeps my cuticles hydrated for around 9 hours. You could just use Vaseline, but that leaves your fingers a bit sticky.

For on-the-go care, I use Sephora by OPI Brush-on Cuticle Oil. But I recently lost it. :( Granted, it's not as penetrating as the oil by SEACRET, but this one was mainly for touch-ups.

I haven't decided if I should repurchase (it's $9 for 0.25oz), or just return to using Burt's Bees for touch-ups. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with my cuticles - they definitely look better than they did a couple months ago.

Let me know if you guys want a more in-depth review on the SEACRET cuticle oil. :)

Review: Laura Mercier Smooth Creme Foundation

Are you sick of Laura Mercier, yet? ;) I know some of you might be wondering why I'm reviewing a foundation that's clearly meant for the winter time. Well, for me, creams transition very well into summer because I just use LESS of it (ie - like a concealer), or dilute it with moisturizer. Plus, my dry cheeks can always use the extra hydration, be it summer or winter.

Product: $50 for 1oz/30g glass jar. Comes with a plastic inner lid and small spatula. The price is a bit steep, but you need so little product each time you use it.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Hydrogenated Didecene, Polydecene, Glycerin, Hexyl Laurate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Boron Nitride, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Methicone, Argania Spinosa Oil (Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil), Phenoxyethanol, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Ribes Nigrum (Blackcurrant) Seed Oil, Trihydroxystearin, Tropolone, Tribehenin, Cetyldimethicone/Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Disodium Edta, Sodium PCA, Linoleic Acid, Ceramide 2, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, PEG-10 Rapeseed Sterol, Polyquaternium-51, Linolenic Acid, Trehalose, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopherol, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide. Shades: 3.5/5 For anyone NC15-20, Warm Ivory would work. It's a bit on the neutral side, but it's OK because I don't use it all over my face. It'll look dark on your hand initially, but after you spread it out, it becomes lighter (similar to how some BB creams work). The next shade up, Sunny Beige, is more yellow but too dark for me. For anyone paler, there's the lightest shade called Blush Ivory, which a bit pinker.

This amount is much more than I need. I don't think I'll ever finish this foundation.

Creamyyyy!

It's so moist and smooth!

OK, so obviously when you put this on your face, you want to spread it out more than I did in the photo below.

Spread out some more, but not completely (sorry, I didn't blend thoroughly). As you can see, the color sets pretty nicely. Gives me a brightened look.

Application: I don't usually talk about application, because I figure everyone has their own methods. It's easy to blend, but it's also easy to apply too much at once. First, I spread it out on my hand until I get a very thin layer, and then I dab it onto the face with my fingers.

Coverage: 5/5 Not surprisingly, this is a full-coverage foundation. However, you can make it sheer if you use less and blend it out more, or mix it with your moisturizer.

Finish: 5/5 What I said about LM's Tinted Moisturizer could apply to this as well. It's so moisturizing, and gives a your-skin-but-smoother look. It's actually very dewy on me, but that may be because I have combination skin. I've heard people with extremely dry skin say that this gives a more matte finish on them. Again, it doesn't accentuate pores/lines/flakes.

Lasting Power: 4.5/5 Lasts pretty much all day on me. The oil control is not as good as her Oil-Free TM, but this will depend on your skin type. I have to blot my T-zone a 2-3 times throughout the day (as usual).

Overall: 5/5 A rich cream that dry-skinners will love! I have heard this compared to Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse, which is an inexpensive alternative, but I have yet to try that.

Although I don't have time for any of these products in the morning, all of them are worth checking out. The creme sticks are very smooth and easy to use. The eyeliner is highly pigmented and has great lasting power. The eyeshadows, as expected from Kate, are smooth and very shimmery.

After trying both Lancome Teint Miracle and Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation, I have decided that liquid foundation is just not for me. Liquids tend to settle into the skin, and give a more "done-up" look. I also find that they are not hydrating enough for my dry cheeks. So I've finally returned to my ever faithful brand - Laura Mercier!

First, I will review Laura Mercier's Oil-Free TM. Then, I will compare it to the regular TM.

Product: $42 for 1.7 fl oz/50ml, squeeze tube. Active Ingredients: Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Ethylhexyl Salicylate. Water (Aqua), Disiloxane, PEG -30 Dipolyhydroxystearate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Glycerin, Isohexadecane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Phenoxyethanol, Boron Nitride, Jojoba Esters, Magnesium Stearate, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Squalane, Laryl PCA, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tetradibutyl Pentaerithrityl Hydroxyhydrocinnammate, Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearrate, Disodium Edta, PPG-15, Stearyl Ether, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate, Methylparaben, Propylparaben. (May Contain) +/-: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxide (CI 77492), Iron Oxide (CI 77491), Iron Oxide (CI 77499).

Shades: 5/5 I am using Porcelain, which is the lightest shade. It would work for NC15-20. It is a bit yellow-toned.

Sorry, the lighting on these isn't very good. No flash.

Coverage: 4/5 Coverage is better than most tinted moisturizers out there, but not as good as foundation of course.

Lasting Power: 4/5 Lasts a good 10 hours, no oxidation. I do have to blot every few hours, but I get oily/shiny even if I am bare-faced. :(

Finish: 5/5 This is the most important aspect of base makeup for me, and Laura Mercier doesn't disappoint. It's your-skin-but-better! If you have dry flakes/acne scarring/pores, this will smooth over those imperfections. Still, if you have dry skin, hydrate well before applying.

Overall: 5/5 Another fantastic product from LM!

Oil-Free or Regular? I prefer Oil-Free, because it has a little better oil-control, stays fresher longer, and more non-comedogenic. If you have oily/combo skin, and if you are acne-prone, go for oil-free. :) In terms of shades, there's no difference between the two.

Nude, on top, darkens a little after it settles in. It's not completely blended in this photo though.

Hey y'all - since I'm back from my age-long absence from blogging, I thought I'd show you some things I've purchased this school year. In many ways, it's been a big year for me - not just professionally, but also personally. But who cares right?? Why should there ever be a reason to buy new things? You can tell I'm falling down the rabbit-hole towards financial instability.

In any case, here they are, both makeup and non-makeup items. I'm not including clothing because I'm too lazy to take photos of them. :P Don't posts like this scare you? They're a BIG reality check on your spending habits... which is a very good thing, technically speaking.

Review: Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15

UPDATE: Well, in the end, this foundation went back. I still think it's a good foundation - great coverage, lasting power, shade match... but the 3/5 I gave for the Finish category is the killer. It just doesn't look natural on me, and settles into dry areas even if you have a good hydration regimen. Good luck everyone ~ :)

Just a few thoughts on BB's Skin Foundation. I'm using my roommate's camera to do this post (thanks, Jess!).

Product: $45 for 1 oz glass bottle with pump. Travels OK, but leaks out a tiny tiny bit at the nozzle.

Shades: 5/5. Fantastic yellow-based range. Warm Ivory is a very good match - I'm currently NC20. I've lightened since moving to the east coast (but I miss California sun!).

Here we go! The background is a scarf, by the way. :P

This much will cover your entire face. I just use my fingers for application.

Rather liquid-y in texture, but doesn't run much.

Extremely easy to spread.

Note the white-ish cast. This does not persist though.

All blended. Initially very glowy.

After it sets in. Gives more of a semi-matte appearance. It does settle into lines a bit.

Coverage: 5/5. I'd say medium-full. I don't need to use concealer. Covers acne scars very well.

Lasting power: 5/5. Lasts very well on me, no oxidation. This may change as the weather gets hot though. It's still rather chilly in DC. I get a little shiny on my nose after a 2-3 hours - but it's not bad if I set with Urban Decay's De-Slick Matifying Powder.

Finish: 3/5. Although it makes my skin look nice, it's still more of a "done-up" look - in other words, not quite "skin", as the product name would suggest. (This is all relative though. I only use concealer on most days, so my definition of "natural" is pretty much like bare skin but a little perfected.) Imparts a subtle glow, but not as moisturizing as I expected. Hydrate your skin well before using, because it can settle into lines/dry spots.

Scent: None that I can tell.

Overall: 4/5. Good. This foundation does not break me out, or cause any sort of reaction. Will continue to use this, and see how I like it compared to Lancome's Teint Miracle.

Lunasol Layer Bloom Eyes - 02 White Gradation

I'm impressed with my first Lunasol palette. Really really glad that I jumped aboard the Lunasol bandwagon, because it's definitely worth it.

Doesn't look like much in the pan, but it's very pretty swatched, and even more unique on the lids!

You can't tell from the swatch, but the sparkly white shade is actually a fantastic base. It sticks to the lid very well, and is quite pigmented and evens out my lid! No fall-outs.

TEXTURE: Not as soft as Dior or Guerlain. However, it instantly melts into my skin after application to create a smooth, non-powdering finish that lasts all day. More crease-resistant than Dior, IMO.

SHADES: I originally thought the seafoam green would be too light for use in the crease, but it actually gives the perfect amount of definition. If you have trouble wearing greens, this one's for you!

The milk-candy, custard pudding yellow is just beauuutiful~ It matches so well with the green! YUMMY~ The dark brown has gold undertones, and it works very well as a liner shade. I don't haven't used this on my lids, but I might do so for evening looks.

These next 3 photos were taken under bathroom lighting. It was a cloudy day in San Francisco, not surprisingly. Forgive the oily nose!

You can up the intensity of the look, by putting the dark brown shade into the crease. I didn't do that in these photos.

As you can see, my lashes are bare. The look would be more complete with a bit of mascara. ;)

OVERALL: The look this palette makes is SOOO GLOWY~ Like everyone says, it gives a clean and polished feel, without being boring! If you're looking for an alternative to your everyday neutrals, this palette is the one to go for. I don't currently have anything like it in my collection.

POSSIBLE DUPE: Perhaps the Majolica Majorca palette in BR752 is similar to this palette in terms of the yellow and green, but probably different when applied on the lids.

How is it MARCH already?!?!?!?!?!

I'm sorry everyone. No more promises about blogging, ever again. I guess that means I totally lied when I promised you gals "new content" back in December.

I've been looking at digital cameras, and I'm having trouble picking one out. What cameras do you all use? I'm thinking about the Canon S95, which supposedly has a lot of SLR-type features packed into a nice, compact size. But the price is not compact!

I've not been buying much makeup lately, as you can probably tell. So, I have no idea what's "in" right now. Definitely have to catch up on all of your posts.

Recently, I've been focusing more on my wardrobe. Shoes, sweaters, coats.... bag bag bag! I'm going to Las Vegas for spring break, so hopefully, I'll be able to find a nice purse there. :)

The Economics of Beauty Blogging

Now, they all say time is money, and in that sense all beauty bloggers have spent a LOT of money already. But of course MONEY is also money!

I find it kind of funny how I became a beauty blogger since I don't even buy much makeup. I'm still using the same make-up drawer I used when I began blogging. Which means my stash has neither risen or fallen in size - just shifted in its contents.

The reason I'm writing this is because (my exam is tomorrow and I'm procrastinating) I feel guilty for pretending that I am financially secure. That's what student loans will do to you - blissful years of money raining down on you, giving you a false sense of stability. In the next four years, my total loan amount will exceed $250,000, excluding interest.

Now, I can think on the flip side and say, "Oh well, spending $50 on a makeup item is nothing to compared to that! It's okay!" But comparing a deficit to a bigger deficit isn't a good way to go Joe!

Economics aside, I just don't have a chance to use as much makeup these days. I find a routine, and I stick with it. I think it's because medical school is so intellectually draining that I'd rather not spend time thinking about my face any more than I have to. I still like the effect of makeup, but I'm in a no-lemmings phase right now. Boo.

I'd rather be eating cake and watching a K-drama. Any K-drama fans in the house?! Don't worry ladies - I will try to find a way to keep up this blog-o-mine. Blogging is too awesome to give up, right?!

A Ramble-y Hello!

The thing about cosmetics is that it's kind of a personal experience, and most people don't talk about it. It's not something you readily bring up in a conversation. I'd love to have in-depth conversations about the merits and faults of various products or comment on the cosmetics industry or about beauty in general... but who with? Outside of the blogger world, I find that makeup only comes up in certain specific instances. Like when you see your girlfriend reaching into her bag for lip balm... then you can sooooorrrttt of squeeze in a comment or two about lip products, but even then, the conversation goes nowhere.

Whereas, for instance, food bloggers always have lots of people to chat with. When the foodie in a group of friends talks about a specific food, everyone can at least say whether or not they like it. Not so for makeup! Our audience is much more narrow.

Of course, it depends on who your friends are. But I have only one friend with whom I can truly talk makeup with, but she's currently at the other end of the country! Yes, I can "talk" makeup online, but there's something very gratifying about having a face-to-face discussion.

Anyone feel the same way?

Hello, everyone!

I'm so sorry I've been a bad blogger. Recently, I won Mel's giveaway, and felt compelled to post something - anything! This community has given me so much, and I feel a bit undeserving. :-/ Also, thank you Mel for being my 100th "follower"! :) What a grand number for such an infrequent blogger, haha.

Now the reason for my MIA - I have exams every 2 weeks! There's no time for anything. Literally. I pack in about 6 hours of studying every day, excluding time spent in class. It's freakin' crazy up in harrr! I miss California. In Cali, I can walk on the street past midnight, and feel perfectly safe. I can wear the same clothing all year round, pretty much, and be fine due to the glorious weather. I can always find great food at fair prices. And everywhere, there's Asians! LOL~

I'm really enjoying D.C., though. I have met some really cool people! I'm surprised that I've found friends so early... it usually takes me a while to get to know others. I'm not anti-social.... but my social IQ is not as high as I would like. Tee hee.

WOW, look at how much I've rambled! Geez. See you all in December! :D

Quick Review: TRESemme Dry Shampoo and Waterless Foam Shampoo

Can't show you my own photos, because I've already returned them. Here's a random stock photo - the products I'm reviewing are the 2 on the right, namely: TRESemme Fresh Start Waterless Foam Shampoo for dry hair, and TRESemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo for oily hair.

Pros:
-The scent.
-Cheap at $4-5 buckaroos.

Cons:
- HEAVY! Both products are WET, and weighed down my hair.
- Especially avoid the Waterless Foam Shampoo - it's just not meant for 2nd day hair. (Maybe if you had SUPER SUPER DRY hair, even on the 2nd day.)

Rating: 0.1 out of 5

Recommendation: Go for Psssssst! Dry Shampoo instead! It's $1-2 bucks more, but well worth it.

News #1: I helped the Fiance move into his new apartment in SF! :) I'll be staying with him for a little while, so I'm in a house with FIVE other guys...*EEEK* The shower situation is dire, but I think most of them wake up at 5AM-ish for clinic/rotations. That means I can enjoy my showers, 'cus I don't wake until 9AM, tee hee! The only bad thing is... there's no internet. -___-

It'll be difficult leaving the Fiance - he's got 3 years to go in school. *SIGH* At least he'll be helping me settle in. This is the first time we'll be apart since we got together 3 years ago!! AHH! I'll miss my family too. BOO~

I'm really excited to start school, of course! That initial burst of excitement lasted for only 5 minutes tho. Then I got kind of scared. Thoughts of failing, homesick-ness, afraid people won't like me... haha, all these things start to pop into my head. I feel like I'm 16 years old again! *SIGH* I've come to realized how protected and dependent I've been. And damn, I'm in my 20's already, yo! xD

Wow, after 1 month, my LM foundation finally came! Won't list the seller here, because I wouldn't recommend her. Especially since I know all you gals like to pay and receive ASAP! (Like me!) :D Anyway, I got a few more things!

A lipstick from Shiseido's newest collection! Shiseido lippies have never disappointed me since I started using them like, 10 years ago~

I've been looking for a purple-pink-rose lippy for a while. I wear purple eyeshadows a lot, so I think this will be a good complement!

Perfect Rouge Tender Sheer, RS326 "Pout." Really lovely shine and texture! The swatch looks berry, but on the lips, it's like a rose-pink with purple tones - just like in the tube.

Needed new concealers! Decided to go for this one, since there's been lots of raves for it on YT!

Covers my acne scars really really well! Shade I got is Light, 2-3.5.

Bottom: not blended. Top: blended out

This one I got for under-eye concealing! Shade I got is Light-Medium.

Love both sides! Only problem is, the highlighter end tends to spill over when I close it. Such poor packaging~ *sigh*

I loved LM's TM so much, that I decided to try her higher-coverage foundation, too. I got a sample at Sephora, and absolutely LOVED it. So I got a full-size~

The shade "Medium Ivory" matches me perfectly. I think it's the lightest yellow-based shade she has! Beige Ivory was waayyyy too pink.

Very easy to spread, but sets very fast.

Finish is indeed silky, but turns dewy within 1-2 hours~ yay~

I will do a comparison between the Tinted Moisturizer and Silk Creme Foundation soon~

I have been wearing just the concealers recently, and they last a long time without setting powder! I have yet to try LM's mineral foundation - I'll go to Sephora to check it out. But honestly it's been relatively cold and windy in SF (as always), so I haven't felt a need to change up my main foundation routine yet!
