Modern press releases are incredibly effective tools for marketing content. Not only do they have viral online capability, but they also can provide a large burst of high ranking bank links which will make your SEO consultant drool. The level of success will depend on the structure of the press release, as well as the energy the story exudes. Is your content newsworthy? Don’t release it until it is!

This is possibly the most effective marketing strategy. There is cost associated with this, just as there is with other marketing items, but this cost is consistent and the effects are long lasting.

Compare, Convey, Contrast, Relate, Exemplify and make Convenient to buy or learn more about the products you are reviewing. An honest review must not be compromised by misrepresentation or sabotage. Use real world examples of the product, support this with pictures, prove to readers you have used all the products in question,  explain any shortcomings of them (find some) and talk about entry costs. The last aspect is layout, a good review layout is critical. The highlighted product (the winning product in your review, and hopefully your client’s product) should be visually distinguished.

Logo – If you have a company logo it should appear at the top of the page. Missilefish is playing with the idea of a QR code integrated with a logo, calling it a “Smart Logo“.

Identifier – Simply identifies the document as either “PRESS RELEASE” or “NEWS RELEASE”. Both are acceptable.

Release Information – Simply identifies when the information is meant to release. Most commonly it will be “For Immediate Release”.

Contact Information – Should include a name, title, phone number, web address, Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and email. Keep in mind this adds to the final word count.

Headline – Headline Here (this should be similar to a headline you read in the newspaper, it should be short and grab attention. This is often the most important aspect of the release. If a headline doesn’t grab a writer’s attention – they may not read the rest of the release. Write a headline that is short and simple. It should not be longer than 170 characters and the primary keyword for the release should be included.

Sub-Head – a little longer than the headline and usually rounds out the information found in headline with a little more information. The sub-head is optional. It should briefly illustrate what the main point of the release is, including why the information provided is relevant and newsworthy. It should be italicized.

Microlines – This is a developing trend for hinting at acceptable or desirable Twitter™ messages or short Facebook™ status updates. This is clearly optional.

Place Line – The Place line identifies where the story is coming from. This is very important information for a reporter. If the reporter is based in San Francisco and the story is from Idaho, and covers a local news issue – they will probably not be interested. But if it’s from San Francisco, they will most likely read on.

Date Line – Simply lets the reporter know when the release was issued.

Lead Paragraph – Paragraph one is the information that is meant to hook the reader (hopefully a journalist). This paragraph included the five W’s (who, what, when, where, why). It should present information in a manner that is compelling, and thus makes the reader want to read more. It should include the shop name and URL.

Body – What typically follow the lead paragraph are three to five paragraphs – the body of the release itself. The most important information is placed in the first paragraphs, and it gets less important as you continue towards the end. This is known as an inverted pyramid. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Think of an upside down pyramid, the shape represents the information you are trying to explain. The width of the pyramid directly relates to the weight of the material – its importance. So, the most important info goes at the top, and the least at the bottom. There is a very logical reason for this writing style: editing. When an editor needs to cut a story they simply cut from the bottom up. Since the least pertinent info is at the bottom – there is little lost.

The body should include a quote or two about the subject matter from someone in the company, an expert in the field, or a client.

The last paragraph should wrap up the story with contact information.

Boilerplate – This is a description of you company that goes at the end of your release. It is usually identified with a header. For instance “About CafePress.com”. The information that follows is the company history, and services. Reporters look for this to get a quick understanding of what exactly your company does.

End Mark – All press release end with a standard ### or -end-. If a press release is more than one page the end of the first page should have be noted with -more- at the bottom. Note: in general a press release should be kept to one page when possible (400 words).

More Information – You can add an editor’s note after the end mark. Anything that follows the standard ### is meant to be unprinted material. If this is a political campaign message, the financial source should be identified here as well.

The correct formatting creates a professional, news or press release that is automatically more media and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) friendly. How you present your news is just as important as your content.

Initial Case: Your headline should be written in initial case, with the first letter of each word capitalized. Exceptions to this include words less than three characters and prepositions.

ALL CAPS: It is considered bad form to submit a press release entirely in upper case letters, or ALL CAPS. In the unlikely event that your release passes through Missilefish’s editorial review process, it will be ignored by journalists and many readers. In addition, avoid using ALL CAPS to create emphasis on certain words or phrases, as this is a red flag that your release is an advertisement or spam. Always use mixed case when formatting your news release.

Summary: Include a one paragraph summary, ideally two to three sentences in length. Some distribution points will only display your headline, summary and a link to your news release, so if your press release does not have a summary paragraph, you may reduce the effectiveness of your news since readers will not be enticed to click through to the full release.

Dateline: Your press release body should begin with a dateline, which looks like this:
City, State (PRWEB) Day, Month and Year.

Including the city and town related to your news is optional, but helpful for readers. The date should reflect the date of distribution for your release. In the event that this release is a promotional release for a web domain, the domain url should be in place of the originating “port of call”.

Spacing: Each paragraph should have natural line wraps, not forced line breaks. Leave one line break between each paragraph.  It’s not necessary to include dashes, asterisks or other symbols to separate sections in your release.

Grammar: Be sure your news or press release follows the accepted rules of grammar and style. Grammatical and punctuation errors affect your credibility. Editors will hold your press release from distribution until you fix excessive errors.

Link Spam: To avoid link spam, include no more than one link per 100 words of your release. These links include both anchor text links and active URL hyperlinks.

Ticker Symbols: Unless you have express written permission to use another company’s ticker symbol, don’t include it in your release.

Lists: We have found that long lists may cause your release to be rejected from the news search engines. To avoid this, limit your use of listed items.

Graphs and Charts: Attach graphs and charts to your release by converting them to images or PDFs and attach them to your press release, because graphs and charts in will not display properly if they are in the text of your news release

Length: It is nearly impossible to announce your news in a few sentences. If you do not have more than a few sentences, you may not have a newsworthy item. We recommend release lengths between 300 and 400 words in paragraph form. No more than 800 words, and in some cases, releases with more than 400 words can incur additional costs depending on release scope.

Final word count will include your headline, boilerplate, the date of publication and your contact information (approximately 25 words generally). In most cases, a final word count tally ideally sites just under 400 words total. Additional words could incur additional charges, typically in batches of 100 additional words.

It’s permanent record, pretty much the moment your content goes live.

It is the “purpose” which defines the approach, as some content will have differentiating purposes on your website. For example, your contact and directions page has a different purpose than your author biography page or mission statement.

Purpose

This is perhaps the most important question you can ask yourself or team prior to penning a single thing. What is the “Purpose” of this upcoming content? And what is the blueprint to structure the content to best execute the agreed upon “purpose”? Is our purpose in alignment with our category, our parent page or our mission scope?

Material questions that are useful for defining your purpose:

  1. Are you intending to make a direct sale, a referral sale or a review of some sort with this content?
  2. Are you intending to open a debate on a subject, will this be living content, content which grows over time?
  3. Is this content supplemental to your cornerstone or is this a new direction?
  4. Is this content something which should be carefully timed with something? Future holiday promotion, election cycle or conference date?

Having a consistent blueprint for each type of content mission will be valuable over time, as readers and visitors recognize your consistency over time as opposed to your “habits”. It isn’t the content blueprint that defines you, it is the implementation and quality. A blueprint strategy will help your editorial process immensely, as well as your design and presentation.

Content Blueprints & Strategy

When developing a blueprint for your content, there are six criteria you should keep in mind:

  1. Content & length
  2. Structure & navigation
  3. Visual design
  4. Interactivity
  5. Functionality
  6. Overall experience

Instead of going on and on about content blueprints, I’d like to just say “You need a blueprint, if you need help ask me!”. I could write a hundred pages of nonsense about this, so in the interest of saving myself from blog brain damage, just inspire me to write up a section on blueprint development! On to my main purpose, the strategy itself on how to approach your content development.

This Content is the Strategy

What you are reading, how this content is structured, how you found it and what you do next is a result of my strategy. It begins with an introductory paragraph, styled a little with drop-caps and using some keywords I hope my website is developing a page rank for. I try not to keyword stuff my first sentences and I write with a casual style. A thesis statement, or informational contract with your reader, must be established within the first few sentences. If you execute this correctly you can expect a few things to occur:  On page SEO, communicating with clear purpose and setting expectations. What more can an introductory paragraph offer? Design and supplemental strategic distractions which a reader will appreciate.

I regularly finish my opening paragraph last. As I write my content, I develop some talking points or key concepts, which typically work well in the introduction.

Content Strategy Point: Don’t spend considerable time on the opening words until you have written 80% of what will become your content.

My purpose, the result of my strategy, is to discuss approaching content and the various bones to such a process skeleton. In addition to my stated purpose, I want to develop an opportunity to link to other content which has added value to my purpose. I like to think about supporting images and typography styles, overall value of the topic (anyone care?), competition with search engine placement, market demand, longtail opportunity and perhaps the chance for follow up writing or the start of a content series.

Well structured, referenced and written content is king, not just any old content.

I determine the mission of my content, first and foremost. I don’t necessarily finalize my mission, it is always amendable until published without any consequence. This mission sets that stage for speculating about tags, categories, keywords, alternative titles, secondary headlines, hash tags for twitter, excerpts and meta descriptions.

While I write, I review what keywords were initially speculated about, what tags I intended to organize with, alignment with my category and opportunities to provide links to other useful content. In the end, when the content is published, it is probably the third or later version of whatever I had initially set out to do.

Content strategists are nothing particularly new in terms of specialized industry experts, however, the structure of the strategy is in a state of constant change. Of course each content strategy is essentially unique, but there are similarities between nearly every successful online content strategy today. Frederick Townes (Founder of  W3 Edge and CTO of Mashable) wrote a few years back about 50 ways to get your blog ranked in Google titled “Get Your Blog Google Ranked in 30 Days or Less” which surprisingly today is hardly speculation, these suggestions are now commonplace strategy for every aspiring web site owner.

The typical Missilefish consulting process regarding content strategy covers several of Frederick’s suggestions as mission critical steps in launching or developing a compelling website. Below is a cherry-picking of his well known list of 50 steps.

48. Make a difference, or at least have a clear purpose. Differentiate your content on every post. Cover lots of editorial ground.

43. Don’t stuff blog post titles with keywords. It’s a form of keyword stuffing and spiders hate keyword stuffing. The ratio in headlines should be ~40% keywords, ~60% non-keywords.

41. Create blog categories that contain keywords, i.e., Ecommerce, SEO, Affiliates, etc. for use with a “site hosting” or “site design” blog.

40. Content quality counts. Research topics about which target readers want to learn. Write something new, useful and relevant. And don’t forget to regularly update older posts. Things change fast on the web so last year’s “next big thing” is this year’s hackneyed cliché.

37. Don’t use duplicate content. The only duplicate content that appears in your blog posts are quotes, and they should be identified with quotation marks.

28. Build credibility. Publishing authorities on your site’s topicality usually does the trick. Once blog credibility is established, identify trends, solve new problems and gradually expand the topic range of your blog.

23. Participate in your link community. Forum and blog links are ephemeral, lasting a day or two as web fodder, so there’s always the need for more green. Interact by posting to not only drive traffic with the link, but to also pick up another link from a credible site. All good.

20. Cite the sources of your content. This adds credibility to your posts. It also provides a trail for a reader interested in learning more about the topic at hand.

16. Write about popular brands or celebrities where possible. It doesn’t matter if you’re blogging short sales in the market or clothing for the over-sized human, celebrity and name brands get picked up by spiders.

13. Add imagery and video content to your posts. A picture is worth a thousand web words. Charts and graphs simplify complex information and don’t take up a lot of room. If you aren’t an artist, create a relationship with a freelancer. Never use clip art.

5. Cross link your posts. Link amongst your related blog posts using the keywords you’re optimizing your blog for as the anchor text.

2. Be consistent into month two. Keep the tone, style and topicality of your blog consistent for the first two months until spiders get it. Then, you can branch out to peripheral topics to expand reader interest.

Just these few chosen steps will make a huge difference in your growth rate online. On the daily… there are new strategies being developed, dozens of new technologies and “can’t live without” websites have been developed over the last couple years. The list is nearly endless when it comes to branching out online and developing blog traffic.

A little about PageRank™

PageRank is a number from 0 to 10. It is calculated using special algorithm which is not disclosed by Google, but from quick observation you can notice that PR is spread in some sort of Geometrical Progression.

PageRank is Google’s way of deciding a page’s importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page’s ranking in the search results. It isn’t the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.

To calculate the PageRank for a page, all of its inbound links are taken into account. These are links from within the site and links from outside the site.

In the equation ‘t1 – tn’ are pages linking to page A, ‘C’ is the number of outbound links that a page has and ‘d’ is a damping factor, usually set to 0.85.

That’s the equation that calculates a page’s PageRank. It’s the original one that was published when PageRank was being developed, and it is probable that Google uses a variation of it but they aren’t telling us what it is. It doesn’t matter though, as this equation is good enough.

One of the most interesting and important things about Page Rank is the way PR flows between websites and inside internal pages. This is highly speculated area since this is the most secretive algorithm heavily guarded by Search Engine Engineers, but there is some public information on how it works.

Based on the PageRank distribution, the value of the Initial Page (Linking Page) is based on (NOTE: page, not website since websites contain many pages).Fast Google Ranking and Common Sense

For example:
PR1 = 8 points
PR2 = 64 points
PR3 = 512 points
PR4 = 4096 points
PR5 = 32768 points
PR6 = 262144 points
PR7 = 2097152 points
PR8 = 16777216 points
PR9 = 134217728 points
PR10 = 1073741824 points
(Note that this type of calculation is nowhere near precise!).

It is theorized that each link, including internal links to the same website, are counted with nearly equal value, although recent findings confirm that links found on top half portion of the page are valued slightly more than the ones on the lower portion.

The main goal in link buying and main purpose of this link buying guide is to highlight the importance of Link Juice Calculation. Link Juice is basically the amount of “PR juice” your link will take from each linking page. It is really simple to calculate the number of links on a page and divide the total PR value of that page to that number in order to find the actual “Link Juice Value”. Using this simple formula you will be easily able to estimate which link deal is best for you since no page is equal to another.
