For a long time now I have wanted to write something publically about the Lateesha Nolan case and how I feel about everything that’s happened as I have been there from the start with this one. Every time I started to write something else would happen, and I would have to wait. It may feel like to many people this has all happened suddenly but for me it’s been a very long seven years. But this isn’t about me. I started the Register in April 2005 and Lateesha went missing in January 2005 so it was only a couple of months when Mick Peet came to me and said, “My daughter is missing, can you help me?” So I did. And then Kristy Scholes was murdered and I remember getting that phone call and realising what a mess it had turned into.
We have worked for years and years, we have watched the Police officers on this case come and go, I would send info to one police officer only to find they’re not working there anymore so I would have to start again with a new officer. All the while I kept telling Mick we’d find her, don’t worry, one day, we’ll find her. I made myself available to the whole family as I do with all missing persons families, I sent Lateesha’s children Christmas presents that first year as it broke my heart to think of those children missing their mummy so much. I have spoken to cousins, aunts, uncles, just about her whole family, a family who are largely united but at the same time torn apart within. I have driven through Nowendoc, Walcha and Gloucester personally many times over the years, searching for him. I knew they’d find him at Nowendoc. About a year and a half ago I drove around Nowendoc Mountain, it was early in the morning, still and calm and I saw a dingo by the side of the road. In a strange spot, just right by the road, watching me. And I knew at that moment they would find Malcolm in Nowendoc and I knew he was there, then. That probably sounds crazy, but that’s what happened.

We have done many radio and newspaper interviews, and this is way back 5, 6 years ago, when it was a struggle to get people interested in this missing woman case, when it appeared she might have been just another young woman who’d run off, and even when Kristy was murdered, it was still a struggle to get people to take notice. Dubbo was a place people were fearful of, a dangerous place, it felt like no one cared. But we plugged on, we did the interviews, we kept saying their names over and over again. Lateesha Nolan, Kristy Scholes, Malcolm Naden. We would talk to people who had never heard of Malcolm Naden, we’d have to spell out his name, Malcolm who? And now the whole country knows his name, and the girls, their stories have been told and heard. We tracked him all over the country, we had sightings and information and passed everything to Police and they DID go and check, they DID look for him, they followed up every lead. Something I want to make very clear is to correct the very incorrect notion that Police didn’t start looking properly for Naden until the police officer was shot last December. NOT TRUE. They have searched and searched, for years. Any reasonable person should be able to understand that Police could not tell the public when they conducted their many raids and searches, it would make no sense to alert their target. But there were many many such raids and searches and those officers worked so hard to find him. Those same officers are still working hard to find Lateesha.

We would not let them stop. And I want to make it very clear that it is because of Mick Peet, Lateesha’s father’s dedication to finding her, who didn’t let them stop. I could give you a hundred names of people who Police are not looking for, because they have no leads, but they also don’t have someone like Mick Peet constantly being there saying KEEP GOING. Please find my daughter. Please find this man who knows what happened. KEEP GOING. Endless interviews, taking their toll on his health, on his life, his family. He has a wonderful wife who stood by him the whole way and still does, a quiet but stoic shoulder for him, never wavering no matter how bad it got, Jen Peet is a wonderful woman. Mick was not doing this for the limelight, he was not in it for himself, and I want to say that loudly and clearly. You don’t know the number of times he ended up in hospital, when he thought he’d reached breaking point but found the strength to keep going. These past weeks I have watched him not eat, not sleep, e mailing me at 3am, he feels he has to keep going to bring his daughter home because that’s what a dad does, he doesn’t give up, he keeps shouting until someone hears and that’s what Mick Peet has been doing for 7 years, shouting until someone finally gave him what he wanted. They still don’t have Lateesha home but if she was here today I think she would well and truly know how much her dad loves her, and how hard he’s fought for her.
I speak about Mick because that is the man I have come to know these past 7 years. All credit goes to Joan, Lateesha’s Mum for stepping in and looking after her children, they are blessed to have her in their lives as well as the extended Nolan family and they will grow up hopefully knowing how hard everyone fought for not only their Mum but for them also, so they’d have some answers. They have always said they wanted a grave for her so they can go and talk to her.
I can’t speak for Joan as I don’t know her very well, but I do know Mick and that’s why I am speaking out today and saying Mick, Lateesha is blessed to have you as her Dad, fighting for her to be found and fighting for justice, as it has been a fight to be heard, for a very long time.

More time needed for Naden case: court

April 24, 2012

Prosecutors have told a Sydney court they need more time to prepare a case against former fugitive Malcolm Naden.

Magistrate Julie Huber today adjourned the case against Naden, 38, until June 7 after DPP solicitor Kate Nightingale said the prosecution needed more time to compile its brief of evidence.

The former abattoir worker remains in custody at Goulburn supermax prison and did not appear during the brief mention in Sydney's Central Local Court.

Naden was captured on March 22 in a remote area west of Gloucester in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales.

He had been on the run from police since 2005.

Naden has been charged with the 2005 murder of Kristy Scholes and two counts of aggravated indecent assault on a 15-year-old girl.

Police have also charged him with intent to murder a police officer at Nowendoc on December 7, 2011.

Naden was also wanted over the disappearance of his cousin, Lateesha Nolan, who went missing months before Naden disappeared in 2005.

Police have laid 14 more charges against accused murderer Malcolm Naden.

The 38-year-old was considered Australia's most wanted man before his capture at a remote property in the Upper Hunter region last month.

Naden had been on the run for nearly seven years.

After his capture Naden was charged with the murder of Kristy Scholes, 24, at Dubbo in 2005 and the aggravated indecent assault of a 15-year-old girl the year before.

He was also charged with attempted murder over the shooting of a policeman during an attempt to recapture him at Nowendoc in December.

Naden's case was mentioned in Sydney's Central Local Court today, where the magistrate gave prosecutors another six weeks to prepare their case.

New dig for Lateesha Nolan's body

2012-04-16T07:39:00.001-07:00

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/sydney-nsw/new-dig-for-lateesha-nolans-body/story-e6freuzi-1226327256579A SECOND section of river bank is being dug up by police searching for the body of Lateesha Nolan.

Police began digging up the new location yesterday after murder suspect Malcolm Naden accompanied officers to the Butlers Falls area, near Dubbo, on Saturday.

The freshly marked site is about 300m from where police had been digging for the mother-of-four's remains last week. A team of officers could be seen sifting the soil, with a cadaver-detection dog nearby.

Naden was back in Goulburn's Supermax jail last night.

He spent Saturday night in Wellington jail, after police decided the round trip in one day would be too exhausting for the 38-year-old, who has been co-operating with them.

However, police said Naden had his wrists and ankles shackled and he was escorted by a specialist security detail.

Police scale back search

16 Apr, 2012 04:00 AM
By yesterday the search for Lateesha Nolan’s body had been scaled back after accused killer Malcolm Naden was taken, handcuffed, to the banks of the Macquarie River at Butlers Falls on Saturday.

No longer Australia’s most wanted man, Naden was compliant in leading police to the alleged burial site of his cousin, before being driven back to Goulburn Supermax, yesterday morning.

The 38-year-old was transported to his hometown of Dubbo to assist police in pinpointing their excavations, which began last Wednesday.

Naden was taken to the reserve under tight security and was easily identifiable in orange overalls as he was walked to the location.

He is said to have spent an hour co-operating with police and detectives but, at the time of print, no remains had been discovered.

After the prisoner’s visit on Saturday, Butlers Falls was still cordoned off from the public with a strong police presence blocking access to curious onlookers.

By yesterday morning the exclusion area had been further extended with police tape and manned cars at the entrance of the reserve via old Dubbo Road.

Search for Lateesha Nolan to resume

Search for Lateesha Nolan to resume

NSW Police have moved a search for the remains of Malcolm Naden's missing cousin to a river near Dubbo, after taking him to the scene on Saturday.

Accused murderer Malcolm Naden was led to the Macquarie River on Saturday, resulting in the search being moved about 50 metres downstream.

Naden, the prime suspect in the murder of Ms Nolan, his cousin, was returned to Goulburn's Supermax jail on Sunday, where he has been held since being captured in March after seven years on the run.

Detectives began excavating parts of the Macquarie River bank at Butlers Falls, south of Dubbo, on Wednesday.

The search will continue on Monday as part of Strike Force Durkin.

'Police are confident they are searching the correct area, however two major floods have been through since 2005, which is hampering the search,' a NSW police spokesman said.

Ms Nolan was 24 when she disappeared from Dubbo in January 2005 and her abandoned Ford Falcon was found next to the river the following day.

New South Wales Police are continuing to search an area near Dubbo for the body of a missing woman, after her suspected killer Malcolm Naden visited the site.

Police have been searching since Thursday for the remains of Naden's cousin, Lateesha Nolan.

They have been focussing on a riverside area near Dubbo in the state's central west.

The mother of four disappeared in 2005, and Malcolm Naden is the prime suspect.

He was arrested last month and has been charged with the 2005 murder of Kristy Scholes, an assault on a 15-year-old girl, and the shooting of a police officer during an attempt to recapture him last year.

On Thursday about a dozen officers, including a dog squad unit, began searching the banks of the Macquarie River at Butlers Falls, south of Dubbo, for the remains of Ms Nolan.

Missing ... Lateesha

Police search banks of river for Latesha Nolan's body
12 Apr, 2012 11:57 AM
Police are searching an area south of Dubbo for the body of Lateesha Nolan.

The search for Malcolm Naden's cousin is currently centred around the Butlers Falls area, where police are inspecting the banks of the Macquarie River.

The search is being conducted by officers from Strike Force Durkin - the strike force set up to capture Naden.

Ms Nolan was last seen at her grandmother’s West Dubbo home on January 4, 2005.

She was then aged 24 and described as 165cm tall, of medium build and complexion with green/hazel eyes and brown hair.

Ms Nolan’s car was later found abandoned near the Macquarie River.

Last month, Mick Peet, Ms Nolan's father, said Naden's arrest was a step towards finding out what happened to his daughter, but there was still a long road ahead.

"We'll never lose that pain of losing a loved one, but having lost a loved one and not knowing where that loved one is that's a pain that's pretty hard to describe.

"You have so many thoughts [about] what could have happened, but you just don't know the truth.

"To get the positive truth about what has happened to my daughter and where she may be, that will relieve a lot of pain that we've got inside us.

"You feel for the kids. Lateesha had four kids and you feel for them and all the other families that were affected."

The search for for the body of a woman, believed to have been killed by Malcolm Naden, will continue in the central west of New South Wales on Friday.

Lateesha Nolan went missing from Dubbo in 2005, the same year Naden went on the run.

On Thursday about a dozen officers, including a dog squad unit, searched the banks of the Macquarie River at Butlers Falls, south of Dubbo, for the remains of Ms Nolan.

Police vehicles blocked access to the popular water hole while earth moving equipment sifted through the soil.

Her father Mick Peet says he hopes the search will finally provide answers for her children.

"To get the truth and what happened to her, that'll ease a lot of our heartache," he said.

Mr Peet, who lives in Queensland, says he suspects the search follows on from the recapture of Naden last month, near Gloucester in the Upper Hunter region.

Naden was charged with the 2005 murder of Kristy Scholes, an assault on a 15-year-old girl, and the shooting of a police officer during an attempt to recapture him last year.

Police also suspect the 38-year-old former abattoir worker of being involved in the disappearance of Ms Nolan.

Mr Peet says he has been deeply affected by news of the new search.

"You get a tingly feeling all through your body, it's been seven years of wanting to know what happened to my daughter since she disappeared," he said.

"When Malcolm Naden was arrested I thought he was the person that may have all the answers, so we're just hoping that will be the start of a bit of closure for me and the family."

After his arrest Naden was taken to the super-maximum security prison at Goulburn in the state's south.

Police have begun searching for the body of an alleged victim of captured former fugitive Malcolm Naden in a river near Dubbo in central western New South Wales.

Lateesha Nolan went missing from Dubbo in 2005, the same year that Naden went on the run.

Her father, Mick Peet, spoke with the ABC today just after police informed him of the search of the Macquarie River at Butlers Falls.

Mr Peet, who lives in Queensland, says he suspected the search is connected with the recapture of Naden last month near Gloucester, in the Upper Hunter region.

As a child Lateesha Nolan and her family often visited the same river bank where police are now searching for her remains.

They swam and enjoyed picnics along the Macquarie river at Butlers Falls, near Dubbo in central western NSW, where her body may now be lying in a sandy grave.

Police began excavating the area on Wednesday evening, looking for remains of the 24-year-old mother of four, and continued digging large trenches into Thursday.

Gloucester community thanks strike force

27 Mar, 2012 01:00 AM

GLOUCESTER mayor Geoff Slack has paid tribute to the work of the police involved in Strike Force Durkin and their success in capturing the State's most wanted man Malcolm Naden near Gloucester last Thursday morning.Cr Slack said he had been fielding media enquiries about the successful end to the large-scale manhunt that has been based in Gloucester since January, since the early hours of that morning.
He said the police had been unobtrusive and had been extremely professional and worked well with the local community while they have been based in Gloucester.
Cr Slack said the officers involved in the arrest of Naden needed to be thanked and congratulated in apprehending the State's most wanted man.
"I'd like to thank the police for the work they've done in apprehending him, without anyone being injured," he said.
Cr Slack said residents across the shire, particularly those living in the more remote areas who have been subjected to break-ins in recent months would be particularly relieved after hearing of Naden's arrest. http://www.manningrivertimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/gloucester-community-thanks-strike-force/2501797.aspx

Details behind Naden's arrest

27 Mar, 2012 01:00 AM

MORE details of events before Malcolm Naden's appearance in Taree Local Court last Thursday have emerged. As a result of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody, by law there are certain procedures that now have to take place once any Aboriginal person is taken into police custody in New South Wales to protect their rights.
Police must phone the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) and the person in custody can speak to an ALS lawyer. They are offered early legal advice and are given what is known as a 'well check' to ensure they are okay. This service is available through the Aboriginal Legal Service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Taree's Aboriginal Legal Service lawyer, Peter North was in Sydney the day one of Australia's most wanted men was captured and arrested on a property 30 kilometres west of Gloucester, so it was arranged for private solicitor Michael Jones to represent Naden.
It wasn't until after Naden's treatment in Manning Hospital between 11am and midday on Thursday and he was returned to Taree Police Station that he was officially charged.
The charges were: one count of murder (of a 24-year-old woman at Dubbo in June 2005); two counts of aggravated indecent assault of person under 16 (involving 15-year-old girl at Dubbo in 2004); and shoot with intent to murder (involving a police officer at Nowendoc on December 7, 2011).
After the short bail hearing, where bail was not applied for and was formally refused, the matter was adjourned until April 24. Audio visual link was ordered so Naden will remain in prison and appear in court on screen.

THE father of a missing Dubbo woman suspected to have been murdered by Malcolm Naden will ask police if he can confront Naden in supermax jail and ask him: "Do you know where my daughter is?" Mick Peet, whose daughter Lateesha Nolan disappeared from outside Naden's home on January 4, 2005, will make the appeal to NSW Police to speak with the captured fugitive face-to-face.
"I'd like to walk straight up to him, they can handcuff me and put my hands behind my back, I won't touch him - I just want to look him straight in the eyes and ask him: "Do you know where Lateesha is?" Mr Peet told The Sunday Telegraph.
"I'm going to ask the police. I'd really like to do it. I'd be able to tell if he knows something or not if I looked him in the eyes.
"I don't want to grab him by the throat; I just want to look him in the face - there are so many things I want to know."

Mr Peet described the feeling of hearing of Naden's capture on Thursday morning as the equivalent to "seeing all your numbers come up on Lotto".
But he said Naden's capture was only "step one" in the hunt for personal closure.
"I was terrified he would be shot or would shoot himself and every day we hoped that wouldn't happened," he said.
"I praise the police a heap for bringing him in alive. (Capturing him) was step one - now there's step two and we want the answers.
"I'd like to ask him where my daughter is."
Naden was charged on Thursday with the murder of his cousin Kristy Scholes, 24, in 2005, two counts of aggravated indecent assault and shooting at a police officer.
Authorities indicated at a brief court mention that further charges may be laid against him in the near future.
Mr Peet said investigators have been cautious about indicating whether they had any new leads on his daughter's whereabouts.
"They just keep saying: 'We'd love to tell you Mick, but we just can't'," he said.

Jean and Mick Peet are ecstatic after hearing the news that Malcolm Naden, who was wanted over the disappearance of Mick’s daughter Lateesha Nolan, has been captured.

Scottie Simmonds

WHEN Mick Peet's phone rang at 1.45am yesterday, he was tempted not to answer it, thinking it was a drunken mate on the end of the line.
But that phone call changed the Innes Park man's life.
It brought him the news he has been waiting to hear for the past seven years - Malcolm John Naden, the man wanted over the disappearance of his daughter, had finally been captured.
"I got a phone call from New South Wales detectives and they said: 'We've got him'," he said.
"I just went weak at the knees."
Mr Peet's daughter, Lateesha Nolan, disappeared from her home in Dubbo, NSW, in January 2005.
Naden, her cousin, has been wanted in relation to her disappearance, as well as the alleged murder of Ms Nolan's friend, 24-year-old Kristy Scholes, and an aggravated indecent assault of a 15-year-old girl.

'The new Ned Kelly': the world revels in Naden

Amy McNeilage March 23, 2012

'Thank God it's over. I've had enough'

"The new Ned Kelly". "Long lost convict". "Martial arts expert". "Bad bush tucker man".
These are just some of the colourful descriptions the international media have drawn on in their reporting of the capture of Malcolm Naden yesterday.
"Australia's most wanted man" has made headlines on dozens of international news websites, from Britain to India.
Some lean towards the romantic, while others venture from the facts entirely.
Much of the coverage has compared Mr Naden to notorious bushranger Ned Kelly.

More below

However, the British edition of the International Business Times has taken it one step further, weighing his survival skills against those of British train robber Ronnie Biggs, Carlos the Jackal and even Osama Bin Laden.
The bulk of the international coverage appears to have come from the three major international news wires, Associated Press, Agence France-Presse and Reuters.
The AP story includes NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione's description of Mr Naden as a "master bushman", before explaining to readers this is "an Australian term for a wilderness survival expert".
The French news wire AFP draws parallels with "working-class hero" Ned Kelly, while Reuters said he lived "like an animal" in the rugged wilderness.
Britain's Telegraph put its own spin on the story, pouncing on a Herald headline from late last year that described the fugitive as "the bad bush tucker man".
It reported that his crafty bush skills have earnt him "an almost mythic status" in Australia.

More below

"Naden, known as a quiet recluse, was a martial arts expert and avid reader of the Bible, crime books and survival manuals," the story read. "He is believed to have lived off wild nuts, berries and peaches as well as prey such as wallabies and wombats."
The most interesting account may have come from Canada's Oye! Times, which looks to have taken more than a little creative licence, producing a largely fictional story.
It claims the "long lost convict" was being hunted for "the murder of a uniform policeman last December". (In fact, an officer was wounded and recovered.)
The sensational story also claims "prize money" of $100,000 was being offered to "anyone who catches him alive or dead".
"This was the first time ever in the criminal history of Australia that a bait this high was put, after Ned Kelly in the last century," the story claimed.
The NSW government did announce a $250,000 reward late last year. However, this was not for Mr Naden's head but for information leading to his capture.

Malcolm Naden captured

BY ILYA GRIDNEFF

22 Mar, 2012 02:38 AM

MALCOLM Naden, one of Australia's most wanted fugitives, has been captured north of Gloucester. A senior police source has told Fairfax that no one was injured when they swooped on the armed and dangerous man in rugged bushland.
The capture puts an end to an at times embarrassing hunt for the former meat worker who has managed to elude police for nearly seven years.
"We’ve just got off a satellite phone, so it's pretty remote but they've got him and locked him up," the police officer said.
Naden has been wanted since the discovery of the body of Kristy Scholes in the bedroom of his family's home in Dubbo in June 2005.
Police also link him to the murder of his cousin, Lateesha Nolan, who was last seen in January 2005.
A 33-year-old police officer was wounded when Naden opened fire in December last year after police received information leading them to a campsite near Nowendoc.
Earier this month NSW police announced Naden was in possession of a semi-automatic firearm.

Manhunt

Friday, March 16, 2012

Reporter: Charles Wooley Producer: Danny Keens

He's Australia's most wanted man and the most elusive.
Malcolm Naden has been on the run for seven years, crisscrossing some of our harshest terrain.
It seems every time the police get close, Naden slips back into the scrub and the shadows. He's becoming a legend of sorts - like those bushrangers of old.
And just like them, there's a bounty on his head.
But Malcolm Naden is no hero.
He's a desperate man, armed and dangerous and he needs to be caught. But join this manhunt for a few days, as Charles Wooley did and you soon realise just what the police are up against.

Full transcript:

INTRODUCTION – CHARLES WOOLEY: He's Australia's most-wanted man and the most elusive. Malcolm Naden has been on the run for seven years, crisscrossing some of our harshest terrain. It seems every time the police get close, Naden slips back into the scrub and the shadows. He's becoming a legend of sorts – like those bushrangers of old. And just like them, there's a bounty on his head. But Malcolm Naden is no hero. He's a desperate man, armed and dangerous and he needs to be caught. But join this manhunt for a few days and you soon realise just what the police are up against.
STORY – CHARLES WOOLEY: Only a four-hour drive from Sydney, but as remote as you can get. There are places here no man has stood. 80,000 hectares of ancient geological violence, the Barrington Tops National Park is so tortured, twisted and bewildering it defies navigation. It is also where Australia's most-wanted fugitive, Malcolm Naden, plays a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with police.
POLICE: I need to remind you all about the dangers out there in regards to Malcolm Naden. He has shot already to avoid apprehension and he is an extreme danger to us.
CHARLES WOOLEY: This is Strike Force Durkin – one of the biggest police manhunts in Australian history. And as with our most famous cop chases, this one has been infused with the mystique of the bush-ranger – part threat, part legend.
CHARLES WOOLEY: We've spoken to a few local people and I'm not sure they have the feeling he is that dangerous anymore?
POLICE: This person is a murderer, he has shot to avoid apprehension and we consider him extremely dangerous.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Malcolm Naden is alleged to have committed a litany of crimes. Arrest warrants have been issued for the sexual assault of a Dubbo school girl and the murder of 24-year-old Kristy Scholes. Naden's also wanted for questioning over the disappearance of his cousin, 24-year-old Lateesha Nolan.

MICK: I've got a feeling that she might be around here somewhere. This is where her car was found, just up the side of the river here.
CHARLES WOOLEY: It's seven years since Lateesha Nolan was last seen. Her car was found here, by the Macquarie River in central New South Wales. And mysteriously, years later, her wallet washed up on the bank. For dad Mick Peet, this place is the only physical link he's got to his daughter. How do you think he's bearing up?
JENNY: He doesn't deal with it good. I see it every day and it breaks my heart. So it hurts cause I don't want to see him go through what he has to go through.

CHARLES WOOLEY: Mick's life is blighted by having to imagine his daughter's final moments – an endless churn of questions.
MICK: I think he may have committed a sex crime on my daughter, she's resisted and I think he's murdered her and put her in the river.
CHARLES WOOLEY: And that is last thing you really want to think?
MICK: That's the last thing I want to think, that's for sure. She was my first child, she was 24-years-old and she had four kids.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Nobody has more interest then you in the apprehension of Malcolm Naden. He needs to be caught doesn't he?
MICK: Yeah, he needs to be caught.
CHARLES WOOLEY: If only to give you the answers you need.
MICK: Exactly.
CHARLES WOOLEY: How have you handled this?
MICK: It's been pretty hard.
ALLAN: I watched the young Naden grow up…
CHARLES WOOLEY: So this is the house here
ALLAN: Yeah, this is the house.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Allan Nolan is Malcolm Naden's uncle – he knew him long before Naden became Australia's most wanted and watched his nephew slide into a dark and isolated world – retreating to his bedroom, shunning even his family. There's a girl dead and another missing – when do you start to add things up, when does Malcolm come into the frame as far as you are concerned?
ALLAN: When Kristy was found in the room deceased and it was Malcolm's bedroom of course.
CHARLES WOOLEY: The room which he keeps locked?
ALLAN: The one that he keeps locked and the one that you don't see him leave. He was isolated in there and well, nobody else was allowed in there. For some ungodly reason he took a life in there.
CHARLES WOOLEY: That was back in 2005 – and Naden's been on the run ever since. Despite thousands of police hours, hundreds of officers in the field and a $2.5 million bounty on Naden's head, he's still out there.
CARLENE: It's very frustrating because it's so difficult, it's so remote.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Assistant Commissioner Carlene York is in charge of Strike Force Durkin. Is it embarrassing to you that after so much time, you still haven't got him?
CARLENE: No, it's not embarrassing. It's a very difficult task. The difficulty has been in that rugged bushland he can get away and then secret himself again so it's a very, very difficult operation and it's quite different to what you would do in a suburban community.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Here, in some of the roughest country in Australia, the fugitive Malcolm Naden is widely regarded as some kind of will-o'-the-wisp, able to vanish into the landscape. From time to time he is seen here, he is seen there, he is sort everywhere – but the sightings are rarely confirmed. He has become as insubstantial as the very mist that so often shrouds this mountain wilderness. One tiny human needle in such a vast and daunting haystack. Adam, from your training, what are the key aspects of survival?
ADAM: You have water, shelter and food – your three basic elements to survival.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Survival and evasion behind enemy lines are matter-of-fact basics for former army reconnaissance and surveillance paratrooper, Adam Mulcahy.
ADAM: He's not going to be up high, he will be down low where the river system is cause this is where you have food, water and you make your shelter quite easily.
CHARLES WOOLEY: And when there is only one person?
ADAM: One person – it's obviously easier to hide with one person.
CHARLES WOOLEY: And Adam shows us how. Oh mate, it's all up and down here isn't it? There's not much flat land.
ADAM: No, not in the Barrington Tops. It's pretty steep in this country.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Oh, but there is a little hideaway! From the outside, I wouldn't have known there was a fire in there.
ADAM: No, you can't see the fire. It is at the base of the tree, the fire is quite small. He could hear them coming, smell them coming, bring down the canopy on top of him, put out his fire. That can all happen in a matter of seconds, someone would walk past and be none the wiser.
CHARLES WOOLEY: And you've got some meat smoking there? Some kind of meat?
ADAM: Yeah, road kill.
CHARLES WOOLEY: You'd eat that?
ADAM: You're in a survival situation so road kill would definitely be an option of choice for food. Preserves the meat over a long period of time. You can sustain for six months having dried meat. It ends up like beef jerky basically.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Adam, you have been trained for this but to do it for five or six years?
ADAM: It would definitely take a toll on someone doing this all the time.
PROF MULLEN: Anyone who's in a situation of long-term social isolation, what happens is they become increasingly aroused, intense. They become increasingly suspicious and they often become increasingly aggressive. His satisfaction comes from day-to-day survival and every day he stays free, I suspect is a day from him which is worthwhile and gratifying.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Police psychological profiling puts Naden in the most severe and unstable category. Forensic psychiatrist Professor Paul Mullen has spent a lifetime with some of Australia's darkest criminal minds – including the man behind the Port Arthur massacre, Martin Bryant. Looking at his behaviour before he went on the run, already he was practicing for a life of isolation?
PROF MULLEN: This was a man who was finding other people increasingly frightening, increasing problematic. He was hiding away, he was sure that he was in danger so he will feel safer out there, away from people, than he did before all these events occurred and he fled.
CHARLES WOOLEY: I know he shuns humanity but is he lonely out there?
PROF MULLEN: Not by this time no. I mean, his world has changed. He probably feels relieved not to have to deal with other people who he fears and suspects and now his world is a world of the bush.
CHARLES WOOLEY: So he has become in fact a creature of his environment, some of the most rugged country in Australia?
PROF MULLEN: Absolutely. Very sensitive to his environment. Probably knows it backwards by now.
CHARLES WOOLEY: But Naden's not only a creature of the wild. He sometimes seeks shelter in the abandoned homesteads that dot this unforgiving landscape. And everyone around here has their own Malcolm Naden story. Lynne and Dave Daly run cattle here, perhaps closer than they might know, to where the fugitive roams free.
DAVE: There was just a bloke who stopped me on the side of the road, saying he was bogged.
LYNNE: He wanted Dave to go off the road down a couple of kilometres to pull him out – he said his truck was stuck. Dave said later, "I wouldn't have a clue if that was Malcolm Naden or not."
DAVE: We didn't know what he looked like until just recently and so there are a whole lot of people who sort of wander around up here, a lot of pig-shooters, a lot of other itinerants around.
CHARLES WOOLEY: But perhaps Naden's closest encounters have been with the very people he's trying to evade. Naden has been within metres of the police – not once, not twice, but three times. In one case – after finding him holed up in a holiday hut – officers let him slip out the back door. And shortly after, Naden shot and seriously injured a pursuing officer – once again slipping the police net.
CARLEEN: Police were going in through the bush when they came very close to what was later confirmed to be his campsite. They didn't see him at all and the first thing that they knew was that he was there was when our officer was shot.
CHARLES WOOLEY: That really ramped up the game, didn't it? Shooting a cop when you're on the run is not a great thing to do?
CARLEEN: No, it's not a sensible thing – it did ramp it up.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Do you want him dead or alive?
CARLEEN: We want to take him alive. We want to negotiate with him and try and reason with him to give himself up peacefully and we'll take him into custody.
CHARLES WOOLEY: Meanwhile, almost a world away on the Macquarie River, a father waits to find out how his daughter died and why and where the body lies. They start to think he is some kind of romantic bush figure, don't they? Not a deranged murderer.
MICK: My daughter didn't lose her life to no Ned Kelly. She lost her life to a murderer.
CHARLES WOOLEY: And a very sad man, really.
MICK: A very sad man. He needs to be brought in and just pay for his crimes.

Disarm, remove risk
TODAY in the forests between Barrington Tops and Kempsey at least 50 police officers are at risk from an armed Malcolm Naden.

Naden has had no shortage of firearms stolen from huts and houses in and around those forests, firearms that were registered and almost certainly firearms that were not registered.

Naden intent on freedom

BY DAN PROUDMAN AND THERESE RYAN

14 Mar, 2012 04:00 AM

THE woman leading the hunt for Malcolm Naden believes the fugitive relishes a life on the run and will go to any lengths to remain at large.Assistant Commissioner Carlene York repeated yesterday her calls for local landholders to lock their doors.
She had confirmed earlier that Naden now had a .22-calibre semi-automatic rifle and ammunition stolen from a homestead near Gloucester.
The suspected murderer has led police on a chase for almost seven years.
‘‘He seems to want a life on the run. He doesn’t seem to need human contact,’’ Ms York, the head of Strike Force Durkin, said.
‘‘He will go to any lengths not to come into our custody.’’http://www.theherald.com.au/news/local/news/general/naden-intent-on-freedom/2487081.aspx

Guns for Naden

THE fact that every police officer, every retail worker, everyone in NSW is at risk of being shot with a stolen or otherwise illegal gun is not reason enough, apparently, to act against the limitless supply of the weapons. The risk is not great enough, it seems, although you may agree with me that the shooting of Senior Constable David Rixon early this month is reason enough. But what of the ever-present threat to the 50 police officers actively involved in the hunt for Malcolm Naden? As you know Naden is alleged to have shot a policeman a few days before Christmas using a rifle stolen from a Nowendoc house. You will know, too, that Naden is reported by police to have stolen another rifle from a property near Gloucester almost two weeks ago.
Should we wait until another copper is shot before we, the community acting through the state government, take the essential and obvious step to protect police involved in the search for Naden? Was the shooting of the policeman in December not reason enough because he survived? That obvious step is to request, and require if police have that power, the owners of firearms within or near Malcolm Naden’s range to hand those weapons in to police until Naden is captured.

Police frustrated in hunt for NSW most wanted Malcolm Naden

by: Clementine Cuneo
From: The Daily Telegraph

NSW police have conceded they are no closer to catching bush fugitive Malcolm Naden, and are becoming increasingly frustrated in the hunt for the alleged killer. Despite months of relentless day and night searching, millions of dollars spent on the high-tech operation and state-of-the-art air and land searching equipment, Naden is still at large.
While the former abattoir worker's theft of a semi-automatic rifle from a Gloucester farm house in the past few weeks gave police another clue to his whereabouts, police said he could be long gone.
Naden has been hiding out in NSW bushland for seven years since disappearing from his grandparents' Dubbo home in 2005.

FUGITIVE Malcolm Naden is armed with a semi-automatic rifle and ammunition stolen from a Gloucester farmer's hut.

Police made the disturbing revelation late yesterday, issuing a warning to the public to remain vigilant given Naden's willingness to use firearms to avoid capture.
The .22 calibre rifle, which has a 10-round magazine and an effective range of 200m, was stolen from a hut late last month, along with food, blankets and other equipment.
The Daily Telegraph has been told the hut was one of several fitted with motion sensors as part of police efforts to catch Naden, but he slipped away before officers arrived. Fingerprints were found at the hut and police yesterday confirmed they belonged to Naden.
"Investigations by Strike Force Durkin have revealed Malcolm Naden is in possession of firearms, including a .22 calibre semi-automatic rifle, and ammunition," operation commander Assistant Commissioner Carlene York said.

Fugitive Malcolm Naden
"We are aware of his violent nature and willingness to use firearms to avoid capture."
Late last year, Naden fired a single shot at a senior-constable, striking him in the shoulder, as police closed in on and surrounded his campsite at Nowendoc, in the Barrington Tops region. More than $10 million has since been spent trying to catch the state's most wanted man.
Police defended their decision to take almost three weeks to alert the public to the possibility Naden was armed, saying they needed to await the results of DNA testing.
The latest breakthrough in the Hunt for Naden is likely to see police step up their efforts, with new details of his movements and whereabouts.
Last week, Naden became outran notorious bushranger Captain Thunderbolt's effort at eluding police for the most amount of time.
He is wanted by police over the strangulation murder of one Dubbo woman, Kristy Scholes, and the disappearance of another, Lateesha Nolan, in 2005.
He is also wanted over the attempted murder of the police officer, on December 7 last year.
Assistant Commissioner York said Naden is an extremely dangerous man, and members of the community needed to ensure the security of their home and their family's safety was a priority.
Locals in the Nowendoc and Gloucester region last night said it wasn't uncommon for people to leave a .22 calibre rifle lying around in their huts for personal safety.
"There are so many huts in this area..that's what you'd keep for protection and you use it too for shooting kangaroos and rabbits," one local said.

Naden armed with semi-automatic: police

Ilya Gridneff

Malcolm Naden ... armed.

NSW's most wanted man, Malcolm Naden, is now armed with a semi-automatic rifle, police say.
The fugitive, who holds the record for being on the run from authorities for the longest time since 1860s bushranger Captain Thunderbolt held the record, stole the gun from a property in the state's northern regions of Gloucester and Nowendoc.
Police are warning the public Malcolm Naden, wanted for an alleged murder at Dubbo and the alleged attempted murder of a police officer at Nowendoc, is an extremely dangerous man.

Residents in the area have been told to steer well clear of him if he is seen.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner, Carlene York, who heads the massive manhunt, has also urged gun owners to ensure all weapons and ammunition are safely secured in line with the law.
“Investigations by Strike Force Durkin have revealed Malcolm Naden is in possession of firearms, including a .22 calibre semi-automatic rifle, and ammunition.
"This is most concerning as we are aware of Naden's violent nature and his willingness to use firearms to avoid apprehension,” Assistant Commissioner York said.
Police said the rifle was stolen recently from a property with other food items and clothing.
“Strike Force investigators will evaluate the information we receive and respond accordingly.
“We are committed to locating this violent offender and the release of this new information, although concerning, reinforces our intentions to protect the community,” Assistant Commissioner York said.
An arrest warrant was issued for Naden in August 2005 after the body of Kristy Scholes, aged 24, was found at a Dubbo home on June 22, 2005.
A reward of $250,000 is being offered for information leading to the capture of Naden.
Anyone with information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

: Today Tonight: Australia's most wanted man

Fugitive Malcolm Naden is believed to have obtained a semi-automatic firearm and police are warning locals to avoid him at all costs.
The search for the accused murderer, on the run since 2005, was stepped up in early December when police were shot at near the village of Nowendoc in mid-northern NSW.
Police have been based at a Rural Fire Service station at Gloucester since January as part of a scaled-back operation.
On Monday they issued a warning after new information indicated Naden was armed with a .22-calibre semi-automatic firearm and ammunition, recently stolen from a property in the area along with food and clothing.
"This is most concerning as we are aware of Naden's violent nature and his willingness to use firearms to avoid apprehension," operation commander Assistant Commissioner Carlene York said in a statement.
Gloucester and Nowendoc residents are again being urged to ensure their personal safety and home security remain a priority.
Ms York said Naden was regarded as "an extremely dangerous man".
She also urged all owners of firearms in the area to secure their weapons in line with the law and report any suspicious activity.
"Strike force investigators will evaluate the information we receive and respond accordingly," Ms York said.
"We are committed to locating this violent offender and the release of this new information, although concerning, reinforces our intentions to protect the community."
A reward of $250,000 is in place for information leading to the capture of the former abattoir worker.
Naden has been eluding authorities since 2005, when he fled his grandparents' home in west Dubbo days after his 24-year-old cousin Kristy Scholes, a mother of two, was found strangled in his bedroom.
Naden is also suspected of involvement in the disappearance a few months earlier of another cousin, Lateesha Nolan, and the rape of a 15-year-old schoolgirl.
Naden is described as being 177cm tall with a medium build, brown eyes, short/cropped dark hair and a moustache.

Lindi Kingdom has been nominated to receive a Ku-ring-gai Gem award.

SHE slaved away behind the scenes at Nowendoc during the hunt for fugitive Malcolm Naden and offered vital support to emergency services after the Turramurra helicopter crash.
But this week Turramurra resident Lindi Kingdom has been recognised for her work with the Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai Rural Fire Service Catering Brigade.
HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you know someoen who deserves an award? Comment below.
The brigade has a mobile kitchen and can feed up to 300 people and is often called upon to support firefighters and police during emergency operations.
Mrs Kingdom, who has volunteered for the Rural Fire Service for the past nine years, is one of the first women to be nominated for Ku-ring-gai Council’s Gems of Ku-ring-gai awards, which will be presented in celebration of International Women’s Day.
Mrs Kingdom said she was stunned. “I was very surprised. But I don’t think I deserve it because there are a lot of other people who have also worked very hard.”
She said the four days she spent at Nowendoc, during one of the state’s biggest manhunts, was her most challenging experience.
“There were a lot of guns,” she said. Certificates will be presented at the Women’s Day lunch on March 8.

Nine denies “bounty hunter” pursuit by 60 Minutes

By David Knox on February 21, 2012 / Filed Under News 1

The Nine Network has denied a media report which claims it has hired a ‘bounty hunter’ to track Malcolm John Naden (pictured), who is number one on the NSW Police Most Wanted List.
Naden has been on the run since 2005 when an arrest warrant was issued for the murder of Kristy Scholes, aged 24, in Dubbo.
The NSW Government has issued a $250,000 reward for information that leads to Naden’s capture.
So far he has eluded police.
Yesterday the Daily Telegraph claimed, Nine “is believed to have hired a bounty hunter to track down the country’s most wanted man Malcolm Naden.
“In a controversial twist, the network is rumoured to have hired the controversial accused Sydney Harbour Bridge protester Michael Fox – the man who allegedly launched a protest last year against the Child Support Agency.”
But a Nine spokesperson told TV Tonight, “There is NO bounty hunter, no pursuit of Naden etc. That’s merely the preposterous invention of the Telegraph.
“60 (Minutes) IS doing a story on Naden and his incredible bush survival techniques and the merry dance he leads police upon. To do that they are relying on a consultant who with other experts can show them the ropes on bush survival.”
Charles Wooley’s story will appear on Sunday March 11.

Six years and 60 Minutes

60 MINUTES is preparing to broadcast a major story on fugitive Malcolm Naden. The story, to be fronted by reporter Charles Wooley, is understood to be scheduled for March 11.
Producer Danny Keens yesterday declined to confirm a definite broadcast date.
“At this stage we are still filming,’’ he told the Daily Liberal.
Naden has been on the run for more than six years. He is wanted on warrants for the January 2005 disappearance of Dubbo woman Lateesha Nolan, the June 2005 murder of her friend Kristy Scholes, a 2004 aggravated indecent assault on a teenaged girl and the December 2011 shooting of a police officer.
A $250,000 bounty has been offered to anyone who can help police catch Naden.
A 60 Minutes crew was in Dubbo last week to record segments for the Naden story.
Lateesha Nolan’s father, Mick Peet, was the focal point of filming.
60 Minutes flew Mr Peet and his wife and children from Bundaberg to be part of the program.
They arrived at Dubbo on Friday afternoon and were interviewed and photographed by the Daily Liberal.
At that time Mr Peet was unable to speak on the record about the 60 Minutes story because of contractual obligations.
Yesterday he spoke freely about the current affairs program and the pain of returning to his former home.
“Coming back to Dubbo was very difficult,’’ Mr Peet said.
“I tried my hardest to be strong but ended up breaking down in front of the camera crew.
“Charles Wooley was very good - he seemed to understand the agony we have lived every day since Lateesha disappeared.
“Walking along the Macquarie River where her wallet was found last October I experienced a really eerie feeling. I had visions of Lateesha being thrown into the water or buried in a makeshift grave.
“I hope and pray every day that Malcolm Naden will be taken in alive.
“He has already demonstrated a readiness to use firearms to evade arrest.
“I hope the hunt doesn’t end in a shoot-out because we need Naden to tell us what happened to Lateehsa.’’
Mr Peet and his family flew out of Dubbo on Monday morning.
They continue to monitor the manhunt from their Bundaberg home where 15kg of newspaper clippings collected over the past six years are stored in a large suitcase.
“I will never give up looking for Lateesha,’’ Mr Peet said.
“Continued media attention increases community awareness of the Naden manhunt. Hopefully someone will come forward with information that leads to his capture.’//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Father takes trip of remembrance

THEY say time heals, but the exception may be when children go missing.Today out hearts go out to the parents of Lateesha Nolan, the young mother-of-four who disappeared in Dubbo seven years ago.
Her father Mick Peet travelled 1000 kilometres from Queensland yesterday to retrace his daughter’s steps in Dubbo, however painful.
Mr Peet is hoping to get a “feeling” for a lost daughter as he moves about the city.
The answers he seeks may be harder to come by.

MICK Peet is facing his toughest heartache since his beloved daughter went missing at Dubbo seven years ago.He has come to walk the places where Lateesha Nolan was last seen alive.
Police are still hunting Malcolm Naden in connection to the 24-year-old’s disappearance in January 2005 and the murder of Kristy Scholes six months later.
Mr Peet has held memories of Lateesha close to his heart in the long years since she went missing. Not so easy was it to confront the scenes that feature in his imagination of what may have been her last day.
"I’ve got butterflies like you wouldn’t believe," he said. "It is emotional returning, memories of Lateesha keep flashing back."
Mr Peet flew into Dubbo yesterday after a 1000km-long journey made in three stages from his home at Bundaberg, Queensland.
It is a city he knows well despite an absence of the past 12 years.
He recalled yesterday driving then-partner Joan Nolan from Port Macquarie to Dubbo to give birth to Lateesha at Dubbo Base Hospital in May 1980.
He counted himself as "not a real believer in psychics" but hoped he would get a certain "feeling" on his return to the city.
He planned to go to the last place Lateesha was seen alive, the Bunglegumbie Road home of her grandmother, where she told relatives she would be "back in a sec".
He also wanted to see Lateesha’s nearby home in Spears Drive.
"I don’t know who lives there now but I’ll maybe ask if I can sit out the front for a while," he said.
Yesterday he traced the solemn route along Tamworth Street to the Macquarie River near where Lateesha’s car was found abandoned one day after her disappearance.
"Sometimes I blame myself for leaving her behind," he said of his move to Queensland.
Mr Peet has devoted himself to finding leads on the whereabouts of Naden, who has a $250,000 bounty on his head. The emotional father’s hopes were raised and then dashed when police stumbled on but did not capture the wanted man in December at Nowendoc in the remote Barrington Tops.
Mr Peet regards Naden as the one person with "all the answers" to Lateesha’s disappearance.
Even if that happens - Mr Peet is desperate for Naden to be brought in alive - he will still be in the midst of tragedy.
"The hardest thing will be burying her if she is found," he said.
Each day it is the father-daughter bond that keeps Mr Peet going. He brought with him a tangible representation of that connection - an engraved glass that was a gift from his daughter.
"It says ‘To Dad, happy 40th, love Lateesha’," he said.

DADOCTOR

Australian Police place the Biggest Bounty ever offered in Australia’s history
The first since the Kelly bounty in 1879.
Malcolm John Naden 05/11/1973 is of an Aboriginal appearance. Police say Malcolm Naden is armed, dangerous and should not be approached. Naden has been in hiding since June 2005 and is wanted over murder and indecent assault offenses. He is currently Australia’s most wanted man, last seen in the state of New South Wales. Believed to be living rough in the bush around Barrington Tops.
Malcolm Naden is a skilled bush fugitive and has been eluding authorities since 2005, when he fled his grandparents’ home in west Dubbo days after his cousin, 24-year-old mother-of-two Kristy Scholes, was found strangled in his bedroom.
Naden is also suspected of involvement in the disappearance a few months earlier of another of his cousin, Lateesha Nolan, and the rape of a 15-year-old schoolgirl.
Double murderer Malcolm Naden is ready to shoot it out with police rather than be captured alive. He is now Australia’s Most wanted Fugitive with a Bounty on his head.

Prior to this incident, Naden was already named as a suspect in the disappearance of another of his cousin, Lateesha Nolan, who had been reported missing in January 2005.

There have been numerous searches across bushland from the Barrington Tops to west of Kempsey in the six years since Mr Naden slipped a police net outside Dubbo’s Western Plains Zoo.
THE suspected killer Malcolm Naden is costing the police budget hundreds of thousands of dollars a day as he refuses to give himself up

Tactical Operation Unit officers, dressed in camouflage gear

It is the largest police operation of its type,
Sydney Tactical Operation Unit officers, dressed in camouflage gear and armed with high-powered rifles, and State Protection Support unit officers from the northern and southern police regions.
the cost of the six-year hunt for the country’s most wanted man could easily surpass $10 million.

Police had Naden but still he vanishes

On Wednesday 7 December 2011, inquiries led police to dense bushland near Nowendoc.
When specialist officers began moving in on a campsite a shot was fired towards police, striking an officer in the shoulder. The injured officer received treatment at Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital and was later released and is recovering from his injuries.
Naden is accused of firing the gunshot.
At the campsite police located food, bedding and clothing while two firearms were located concealed in the vicinity of the campsite.
Strike Force Durkin, comprising detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, was formed to investigate and establish the whereabouts of 38-year-old Malcolm Naden.
Operation Commander Assistant Commissioner Carlene York said information from the public is vital to the operation.

Ballistics tests confirm seized gun used to shoot police officer – Strike Force Durkin
His fingerprints or DNA have now been confirmed at more than a dozen break-ins, although he is suspected of scores of other similar burglaries.
The seizure of a third gun occurred on Wednesday 21 December 2011, when police responded to reports of a break-in at an unoccupied house on a rural property at Niangala, west of Nowendoc.

Once Again Naden Escapes The Police

Police attended the location and saw a man, believed to be Malcolm Naden, at the house.

A tactical operation was mounted to secure the premises, and about 7:30pm, a search was conducted inside the premises, however, the man was not located.
A .22-calibre rifle with scope was located at the premises and seized by police for forensic and ballistic testing. Subsequent tests have confirmed the weapon was used to shoot the police officer on 7 December 2011.
Meanwhile, fingerprints located at the break-in at the Niangala property have now been analysed and confirmed as belonging to Malcolm Naden.

Still the search continues for Malcolm Naden

Where on earth is Malcolm Naden?
Margaret’s memories of Naden are inconsistent with his public profile, which pits him as a wild, dangerous man.
“The Malcolm we knew was nice,” says Margaret. “He would never hurt anybody.”
“…He used to read a lot. He used to read the bible and go to bible studies… but he wasn’t the sort who would preach.
“He was just very quiet.”
She says he had a strong connection to his grandparents, and would do anything to help them. He had lived with them since his mid-teens.
“He’d wash up for mum. He’d wipe up, clean the house, hang the clothes on the line. He wasn’t worried about what sort of job it was,” she recalls.
“He’d just do all of that.”
Not only was Naden quiet, but he was also painfully shy. He didn’t have many outside friends, but would hang around his male cousins, often visiting Margaret.

Malcolm John Naden: Weird loner or deviant killer
Malcolm’s Father who is in his 60′s still works as a shearer and has vast knowledge of the land and bush survival skills. this is a common skill that was passed down the Naden family. Even Malcolm’s Grandfather Jack Nolan is a skilled bushman and hard worker, too.
Born in the bush in 1927, he has toiled most of his 85 years, from horse-breaking to fencing, driving trucks, graders and bulldozers, picking fruit and construction. Even in retirement, Jack cut firewood for half “the mob” in West Dubbo, where he and Florence lived in the same neat house more than 40 years until the day their grandson Malcolm destroyed their world.

Sighted: police get within 50 metres of most wanted man

Police came within about 50 metres of the state's most wanted man on Wednesday as they closed in on an empty house in remote bushland south-east of Tamworth.
As the resource-intensive ground search for Malcolm Naden, 38, intensified this week, police focused their energy on a property in deep bushland down a long, dirt road between Nowendoc and Nundle.
A man police suspect was Naden - on the run from Dubbo since 2005 and wanted for alleged murder, the alleged sexual assault of a child, and for questioning over a suspected murder - was reported at the property, which is used as a weekender by a Walcha resident.
The smh.com.au has learned police got close enough to Naden on Wednesday to be sighted by an officer.
He is now described as being 177cm tall, with a medium build and brown eyes, close cropped hair, and a shaven face, but a moustache.
The operation, still based at a makeshift command centre in Nowendoc, about a kilometre from Thunderbolt's Way, was about to be scaled back before Naden was picked up by the home security system.
Specialist police and police dogs continued to search the surrounding area today where they believe they may have him hemmed in within a few kilometres.

FUGITIVE Malcolm Naden appears to have escaped another close call after coming face to face with a resident of a remote property outside Nowendoc.Scores of heavily armed police have spent several days at the property after the resident, who lives in Merewether, reported the break-in when he arrived to check on the homestead.
The Newcastle Herald also understands that the man may have laid eyes on the suspected double murderer before he scampered back into bushland.
The incident occurred ‘‘in the past couple of weeks’’ and there are unconfirmed reports food had been taken from cupboards and was being prepared.
It is the first confirmed sighting of Naden since he slipped past two police officers when they confronted him at a remote Niangala property on December 21.
The officers saw Naden as they approached the property, but he slipped out a back door as they called for backup.
Police have confirmed there had been other reported break-ins since Christmas, although the remoteness meant it was difficult to accurately pinpoint a time when Naden had passed through.
More police were called up to the Gloucester headquarters of Strike Force Durkin following the latest sighting and police intelligence suggests that Naden was remaining in and around the Nowendoc area despite having had to elude police.
He has been on the run for more than six years and is suspected of being involved in the disappearance and suspected murder of his cousin Lateesha Nolan, and the murder of another woman, Kristy Scholes, at Dubbo.

THE suspected killer Malcolm Naden is costing the police budget hundreds of thousands of dollars a day as he refuses to give himself up to face questioning over the murders of two women, the sexual assault of a young girl and the shooting of a police officer.
With a scaled-back Strike Force Durkin to continue working from new headquarters at Gloucester in the upper Hunter until at least March, the cost of the six-year hunt for the country's most wanted man could easily surpass $10 million.
Sources revealed estimates of the operation could have topped $330,000 a day at its peak in the days after an officer was shot by Mr Naden on December 7 but the northern region commander, Carlene York, said the size of the operation showed their intent to capture their man.

Quiet vigil marks seven years

Mikey, Kiara, Jenny, Baby Rocko and Mick Peet will be holding an online candle light vigil for missing Lateesha Nolan.

Mike Knott

SEVEN years on and the heartbreak Innes Park man Mick Peet felt when he first discovered his 24-year-old daughter Lateesha Nolan had gone missing is just as fresh, just as painful.
The family will mark the anniversary of Ms Nolan's disappearance with a quiet vigil tomorrow.
In the past months memories of her disappearance have been stirred up yet again by the search for one of New South Wales' most wanted men, Malcolm John Naden, who is believed to have been involved in Ms Nolan's disappearance.
Naden was first spotted in early December in bushland near Nowendoc, west of Tamworth, and is suspected of shooting a police officer in the shoulder.
Naden has managed to evade police since the search began.
But the extensive search is not going to stop Mr Peet from observing seven years since he lost his daughter.
Mr Peet said family and friends would be holding a private vigil for his daughter at his Innes Park home.
The shattered father has also set up an online vigil on Facebook, where anyone can post messages of support to the family, and he is urging people to light a candle at 7pm in Ms Nolan's memory.
"The last four weeks have been pretty hectic," he said.
"It brings everything back from that day on."
Mr Peet is desperate for Naden to be captured alive so that he could provide answers on Ms Nolan's disappearance.
"I think they had their chance on that," Mr Peet said.
"I think he is going to be pretty hard to catch."
But that does not mean Mr Peet has given up on ever finding out what happened.
"Every day I hope that I have answers to her disappearance," he said.
Ms Nolan was last seen leaving her grandparents' house in the Dubbo area.
To join the online vigil, search "Lateesha Nolan" on Facebook.

Ms Nolan's father, Mick Peet, who held a candlelight vigil for his missing daughter this week, was yesterday critical of how the hunt for Naden had been handled.
"It's devastating really for them to get so close and then fail," he said.
"The last sighting, where they sent just two officers, I think everyone would agree they should have had that place surrounded."

Ms York said strike force officers were busy chasing other leads.

It is understood Naden spent hours at the property, using the internet, eating, cutting his hair and shaving and now resembles the updated photo police are circulating that shows him with shorter hair and a moustache.

Police say community tip-offs are vital as they continue their hunt for the state's most wanted man Malcolm Naden

Police hunting fugitive Malcolm Naden in bush north of the Barrington Tops say community tip-offs remain their strongest weapon in their efforts to catch him.
The police strikeforce hunting Naden has shifted its base from Nowendoc in the state's north to Gloucester.
Naden is wanted over the murder of a Dubbo woman and the aggravated indecent assault of a teenager.
He is also wanted for questioning over the disappearance of another woman.
Assistant Commissioner Carlene York says it is crucial that community members keep reporting break and enters in the area.http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-01-06/community-vital-in-catching-fugitive-malcolm-naden/3760804/?site=newcastle

Naden plan change

CHRIS WARD

06 Jan, 2012 04:00 AM

CHANGES to the NSW Police force operations base suggest Australia’s most wanted man Malcolm Naden is edging closer to the coast. In a press conference yesterday at Newcastle Police Station, Assistant Commissioner Carlene York revealed two major changes in arguably Australia’s largest man hunt for some years.
The command post in which police had been operating for more than four weeks at Nowendoc will be moved south-east to the township of Gloucester.
Assistant Commissioner York said the move was to provide police with better services and resources.
Secondly, the search-based investigation has been scaled back to an investigation.
Despite the change in tack, Assistant Commissioner York assured all police were still committed to catching the fugitive.
“We’re still maintaining the main area around Nowendoc down to the Gloucester and south of the areas he’s been sighted previously,” she said. “We are using two different strategies; one is we’re continuing our search and our gridding and our police going out to different cabins and trying to see if they’re broken into even if the owners don’t go to those premises.”
The new phase of the investigation means police will focus heavily on intelligence gathering to finally locate Naden.
“We’ve had a lot of work done by our analysts plotting the locations of previous break and enters over the six years, putting in timelines, working out where he may or may not travel and what’s the preferred means of travel, or paths that he may use in that area.
“And that’s all intelligence-based policing that gives us information about his movements.”
Naden is wanted for the murder of 24-year-old Dubbo woman Kristy Scholes and an indecent assault against a 15-year-old girl.
Ms Scholes was found dead in June, 2005.
Naden is also believed to have information about the disappearance of Dubbo woman Lateesha Nolan.
He was also allegedly responsible for the shooting of a police officer in early December 2011.
There have been reports the increase in the reward for the capture of Malcolm Naden could entice would-be bounty hunters to attempt to track him down.
The reward was raised to $250,000 after the alleged officer shooting late last year.
Police fear the increased incentive could be too much temptation for those after cash.

Wanted: Malcolm Naden.

The new police base in Gloucester.

Search for most wanted scaled back

http://www.news-mail.com.au/story/2012/01/05/search-most-wanted-scaled-back/

Mikey, Kiara, Jenny, baby Rocko and Mick Peet held a candlelight vigil for Lateesha Nolan the day before police announced the search for the man accused of murdering her was being scaled down.

THE last thing Bundaberg dad Mick Peet wanted to hear was that the search for the man accused of killing his daughter was being scaled back.
But after another sleepless night filled with worry, Mr Peet woke Thursday morning to the news police were downsizing their search for the most wanted man in New South Wales, Malcolm Naden.
Naden, who is wanted over the disappearance of Mr Peet's daughter, Lateesha Nolan, for the alleged murder of young mother Kristy Scholes and an alleged rape of a child, has been on the run since 2005.
In early December, the search for Naden was ramped up after he shot a police officer as he approached the fugitive's camp.
Mr Peet said he had been desperately clinging to any news he could get in relation to the search.
"I just hate that they were so close and now it's being scaled down," Mr Peet said.
"We need answers."
From Friday police will move the search headquarters to a new location in NSW, 60km south of its previous location in Nowendoc to a rural fire station in Gloucester.
"It is important to note that if and when circumstances change, NSW Police Force has the ability to quickly upscale resources again," a NSW Police spokesman said.
"The search-based operation will change to an investigation-based operation, and sufficient resources will be provided to meet operational strategies."
A $250,000 reward remains in place for information that leads to Naden's arrest.
Mr Peet, who held a candlelit vigil for his daughter on Wednesday to mark seven years since Lateesha's disappearance, said the past seven years had been a terrible rollercoaster of emotions and it had been hugely disappointing that two recent sightings of Naden had not led to his capture.
"It's terrible waiting for news. We're really kept in the dark," he said.

The Daily Telegraph

EVERY time he hears his dogs bark at night Peter Norbury is petrified fugitive Malcolm Naden has returned, seeking revenge for the tip-off that almost led to his capture. Mr Norbury, who caught the accused murderer on a remote CCTV camera in his property, gave police the best chance of catching Naden, with officers getting within metres of him during a botched raid.
He is scathing about how his information on the location of one of the state's most wanted men was handled.
The car dealer saw Naden on the camera in his Niangala home, near Nowendoc, but said his initial call to police was ignored until he printed out an image and personally handed it to investigators from strike force Durkin.
Living on the rural acreage with his wife and teenage daughter, Mr Norbury said the family now "feel vulnerable" and fear Naden's return each time they hear their dogs barking at night.
"I gave the photo to the cops and look what happened," Mr Norbury said.
"Now he knows I gave it to them and we've still got to live here. The last few nights the dogs have been going off four or five times a night.
"That's unusual. There's something out there."
The family installed the remote video system after a break-in almost two years ago, when bottles of wine were thrown around.
This break-in was very different. Naden even washed up after cooking a meal.
"Naden didn't make any mess at all," Mr Norbury said.
"The cops made more of a mess than he did."
Despite being spotted by two constables and running back inside the house, Naden managed to escape the dragnet in the days before Christmas, fleeing back into rugged bushland which has hampered the police search.
Naden has been wanted since 2005 over the alleged murder of his cousin Kristy Scholes, with police also wanting to question him over the disappearance a few months earlier of another of his cousins, Lateesha Nolan.
